CKIx

Ghostwritten by Angela Lu for Edgar Hu

This summer’s Circle K International Convention was held in San Antonio, Texas on July 5-9th. Over the weekend, my fellow Circle K-ers, along with Key Clubbers from around the country, came together in one hotel for a weekend of bonding and activities. There were plenty of workshops to attend featuring guest speakers, fun service activities, and international elections and awards. During the Day of Service, we were grouped up into teams of people from different districts in order to get to know new people while working together to complete a service project. I don’t know about anyone else, but I thought the orange shirts we were given totally made us look like prisoners! My project was to clean up trash from a riverbed under the hot Texas sun, all while getting bitten by hoards of bugs like I was candy. Despite all

that, I was really proud of the work we accomplished that day and had a lot of fun getting to know my peers along the way. During the House of Delegates, we were able to elect candidates for international office and propose amendments to the club bylaws in order to ensure our organization’s best interests are up to date. Awards were also given out to the most distinguished clubs and members to celebrate all that they’ve done for our organization and the causes we’ve worked for. My experience at CKIx wasn’t all just Circle K, however. During this trip I also discovered my absolute favorite Korean BBQ restaurant. Despite being a completely unassuming and hole-in-thewall spot, the food and service was so phenomenal I decided to give it my first Yelp review AND came back a second time within that same weekend. My weekend at CKIx was definitely full of ups and downs, but it’s definitely an experience I’d recommend every member of Circle K to have at least once.

ReStore Justin Kim At Habitat for Humanity Restore, my friends and I were given a blueprint, a whole hodgepodge of bed parts, and an apron. It took us about 2 hours, but we were able to make a bed and a half that was immediately put up on display. It doesn't sound like much, but it was a pretty fun experience and an okay workout for our backs and arms. In the end, we left feeling great because we directly helped our community. I definitely hope that we have more service events like this and it becomes a sort of monthly thing if possible. I definitely recommend everyone to go with a group of friends at least once, and if you feel that you're not strong at all, they have a whole bunch of other tasks that they need help with so that everyone can help in one way or another.
