With a style for every aesthetic and a size for every space, Santa Barbara Designs is the preferred resource for an international set of design professionals, time after time, project after project.

It all began in 1981 with the introduction of the now iconic Santa Barbara Umbrella, whose timeless design echoes the refined Santa Barbara lifestyle for which it was named. Over the years it has become the standard by which all Santa Barbara umbrellas are designed and built; in fact, many of our subsequent designs were inspired by this original umbrella. Today there are more than ten unique collections, many introduced in response to the needs of the market and our discerning clientele. Every umbrella is bench made, hand-finished and individually registered by the skilled craftsmen of Southern California.

Unwavering quality, workmanship and functionality as well as a variety of design choices — including new color, pattern, texture and finish options — result in an umbrella that is made to last and designed to delight. Enhancing all-weather endurance, Santa Barbara Designs uses highperformance, marine-grade, weather tested materials and parts that withstand even the most extreme conditions. UV-resistant marine finishes applied to the finest timber ensure durability. Brass or stainless fittings ensure rustproof longevity, and commercial grade canvases resist mildew and offer UV protection from the sun.

With hundreds of combinations of shapes, sizes and materials, we offer our clients custom design options, adding more choices than ever before. What makes a great umbrella? We believe an umbrella of the finest quality begins with the finest materials available.

The intrinsic beauty of fine hardwood or solid metal is unmatched. We use solid timber, aluminum or stainless steel for our frames.

All of our wood frames are milled in our own woodshop, and all of our metal frames are fabricated by local craftsmen who meet our stringent standards.

Our hubs are constructed from hardwood, aluminum, stainless steel or brass. Our arm connectors are custom fabricated in stainless steel or brass. Pay close attention to the hardware details of a lesser quality umbrella and you will immediately see the difference.

Every canopy is created in our sewing workroom where our team of seamstresses ensure that no detail is overlooked. Consew® industrial sewing machines, Gore® Tenara® thread, and 100% solution-dyed awning fabrics are used to produce canopies that will delight for years.

Our Southern California headquarters is the home of our state-of-the-art production facility. The average tenure of our production employees is in excess of fifteen years. The highest quality materials are handcrafted by experienced, invested individuals, and the difference is clear with every umbrella we produce.

Welcome to the world of Santa Barbara Designs! We build each umbrella to your specifications. Our expert sales professionals have the knowledge to help you navigate a sea of exciting design options. Hundreds of style choices are available as you create an umbrella that is both unique and functional.

Once you select a frame (we offer more than ten different styles), the fun begins. Your canopy color may be selected from over 50 solid colors of our very own Regatta® brand awning fabric, or from our ten popular Regatta block stripes. We also make available the entire Sunbrella® collection of awning fabrics, offering hundreds of color and pattern choices. For custom color requests, we have a color specialist on staff who sources fabrics from mills in France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Spain. Whether it’s bold, bright or brash, Santa Barbara Designs will help you make your unique color statement.

You can stop here, or embellish as you wish. Add a lining or banding in a contrasting or complimentary color. Choose from one of our seven valance styles, evoking another time or place, another culture, or another century. Spice it up with an edge trim in woven braid or fringe. Or be a little daring with one of our specialty canopy covers.

THE SANTA BARBARA UMBRELLA®

Introduced in 1981, The Santa Barbara Umbrella® takes its design inspiration from the exotic umbrellas found in open-air markets of the Mediterranean. Named after the famous sun-drenched California city of Santa Barbara, this original umbrella and its popular silhouette have earned a reputation for superior shade protection, becoming the standard by which all Santa Barbara Designs umbrellas are measured.

Having perfected the art and science of umbrella making for more than 35 years, Santa Barbara Designs ensures the original Santa Barbara Umbrella performs like no other. Leveraging its enduring popularity with the introduction of new material choices, including three wood frame options, and new features like lifetime anodized aluminum hubs, marine-grade ball bearing pulleys, solid stainless steel fittings paired with a solid stainless steel open and close system, and metal finial options, this umbrella continues to be an iconic mainstay in the Santa Barbara Designs lineup. The Cirque umbrella’s canopy is constructed by seaming together two solid colors of awning weight fabric to create a custom stripe pattern. The seamstresses at Santa Barbara Designs developed this unique umbrella in their Southern California workroom to address the need for more variation in customized canopy colors. Thousands of unique color block combinations are possible.

The Cirque umbrella incorporates a streamlined frame from the Riviera collection, and a canopy finished with a choice of two valances. The overall look is fresh, clean and current.

The design of the Mission Terrace® umbrella was inspired by the California missions that dotted the California coastline in the early days of settlement in the west.

With its welcoming personality, the Paseo® umbrella has been the popular choice for hotels, restaurants, office buildings and private homes for more than two decades.

The original Paseo, made of aluminum with eight standard powder coat color options, is an attractive choice for shade protection. The metal is safeguarded from corrosion with a special Chem Film® conversion coating. A powder coat finish is then applied, and the umbrella is ready to withstand the elements.

Aluminum hubs and stainless steel arm connectors further fortify the Paseo and set it apart from the majority of umbrellas on the market, which use plastic components. Sleek and refined, the Paseo is available in square, hexagonal and rectangular shapes.

The Paseo® XL was designed for those who know the original Paseo umbrella and want more of it.

A larger version of its predecessor, the XL offers all the high performance features of the original Paseo in a larger format. The diameter of the center pole increases to a substantial 2.5 inches and the arms are sized up accordingly. Four stainless steel ball bearing pulleys, along with a high-performance nylon cord, ensure our signature open and close system operates smoothly, even on this grander scale.

The signature Flamenco®, with its fully frill-covered canopy, and the more understated Petite Flamenco®, with its clean lines and crisply tailored ruffles, both take inspiration from the volantes — the frills found on the skirt of a traditional Andalusian Flamenco dress.

We build our umbrellas with an Open-Close System designed specifically for each collection. As with all of our custom components, we’ve blended state-of-the art engineering with the highest grade materials available, such as marine grade

ball bearing pulleys, high-performance nylon cord, and brass or stainless steel fittings. Our system ensures consistently smooth operation, for ease of functionality that’s pleasing to the eye.

For the ultimate in outdoor living, most Santa Barbara Designs umbrellas can be enjoyed in the pool. Our specialist will work with your pool contractor to incorporate our in-pool installation kit into the construction of your Baja shelf.

The sleeve accommodates an umbrella with a 2-inch-diameter pole, and is constructed of PVC, available in white or grey.
