SCAD Illustrious
.
Introduction At the Savannah College of Art and Design, creativity knows no bounds. Offering more than 100 degree programs — the most diverse assortment at any art and design university — SCAD is uniquely positioned to prepare undergraduate and graduate students for careers in thriving, in-demand fields. People from all over the world choose the SCAD illustration program because of its connected and accomplished faculty, stellar learning resources and technology, and outstanding career placement rates. Our illustration students are immersed in a curriculum that pairs solid artistic foundations with advanced methodologies. They explore traditional and digital media while also studying the illustration business, including Web-based portfolio presentation and marketing and honing their individual aesthetics. When you view the work in this volume, you’ll see the critical-thinking and problem-solving skills behind each piece. Using Wacom Cintiq displays, Mac minis, light boxes, and more of the latest hardware and software, our students learn to communicate visually using their unique and authentic points of view.
From the very start, the projects our students undertake are based on real-world assignments, and SCAD graduates find employment in all areas of the communication arts — as illustrators, designers, art directors, and highly adaptable and technically literate team players. The pieces we have chosen for this issue of Illustrious reflect the dedication of an award-winning faculty that specializes in varying areas of the illustration field and brings industry connections into the classroom. Through these contacts and more, SCAD builds self-sustaining relationships with companies and professionals from around the world to create opportunities for students to collaborate on projects, secure industry internships and jobs, and cultivate contacts that will lead to rewarding careers. Our students feature prominently here as prizewinners and as groundbreaking innovators. Many have explored the wide range of elective classes in other departments including printmaking, graphic design, fibers and animation, allowing these to inform their work. SCAD’s study abroad opportunities in Lacoste, France, Hong Kong and around the world also provide distinctive settings for the study of illustration. We invite you to experience the truly amazing work presented here and see for yourself why students come from all over the world to study at SCAD.
