WHAT? Scalarama is an annual celebration of cinema. It takes the form of a season of films, each one chosen by a different organisation or individual, in a variety of different venues. WHEN? Scalarama takes place across the whole of September, so that’s 1–30 September this year… and every year! This is the sixth year of the season and with over 500 events taking place in 2015, it’s growing. WHERE? Scalarama 2016 goes GLOBAL! Across the world, Scalarama can take place not just in cinemas, but also in parks, bars, schools, homes - anywhere and everywhere! Our motto is, where there is a film and an audience, there is cinema. Anyone who wants to put on a screening can be involved, wherever they are. WHO? Scalarama is made up of a large group of cinema enthusiasts, working together to make the season as inclusive as possible. From independent cinemas to film clubs, from experienced film festival organisers to people showing films for the first time, all are welcome to put on a screening. WHY? Scalarama was started to connect films with audiences in new and bold ways, for those passionate in showing films to meet and to share resources and to bring excitement to communal film watching for a whole new generation of film fans.

ROTTEN KIWIS DOUBLE BILL: SLEEPING DOGS (1977) + SMASH PALACE (1981) In the late 1970s, New Zealand filmmaking entered the international stage with SLEEPING DOGS, a political action-thriller starring Sam Neill and directed by Rodger Donaldson (THE BOUNTY, COCKTAIL, DANTE’S PEAK). In 1981, Donaldson followed it up with SMASH PALACE, a relationship action-drama starring Bruno Lawrence. Both films feature the archetypal NZ ‘Man Alone’ raging against a world that – at least in his own mind – leaves him no option but violence. Join LightShow Film Club for an exploration of the troubled Kiwi psyche of the late 20th century, as told in Roger Donaldson’s era-defining action and angst-packed double bill. MATCHBOX CINECLUB: PURA SANGRE (1980) Matchbox Cineclub’s monthly residency at CCA Glasgow continues with Luis Ospina’s rarely-screened cult horror from 1980. In PURA SANGRE, an old, bedridden sugar tycoon communicates with the outside world by CCTV, consuming constant supplies of blood plasma from kidnapped and murdered children. PURA SANGRE is a definitive work in the Tropical Gothic genre, mainly associated with Colombian cinema of the 1980s, in particular a flurry of productions based in the country’s third largest city, Cali, where a very intense cinephile culture was flourishing. The most emblematic of these cinephile filmmakers were fans of Roger Corman as well as cinéma vérité documentarists, and part of a politically radical art scene. ALL THAT GLITTERS IS A MARESNEST + KAVUS TORABI LIVE SET The greatest concert movie ever made! Recorded one glorious afternoon at the Salisbury Arts Centre in 1990, MARESNEST captures all of the manic intensity and joyous delirium of one of the UK’s – nay, the world’s – finest bands. There’s nothing quite like Cardiacs at full force. MARESNEST takes Cardiacs’ kaleidoscope-prog and ultra-pop impossibility and gives it a fiery hoof up the colon. From the bruising, nigh-industrial intro through the perilous frenzy of ‘To Go Off And Things’ to the sustained climax of unlikely minor hit ‘Is This The Life?’, this is delirious, potent stuff, the sound of wild ideas obsessively woven from flesh and wire and moments. Before the screening, special guest Kavus Torabi (of Knifeworld, Chrome Hoof, Guapo, Gong, the Monsoon Bassoon and, indeed, Cardiacs) will perform songs of extreme loveliness and brilliance. All proceeds will go to Cardiacs’ founder Tim Smith. We wish him well. Thurs 22/09 | 7.30pm The Old Hairdressers | £8 English language; no subtitles
