Welcome to the

Thai-Sweden Review Message by John Svengren Executive Director Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce

The development of a European ASEAN Business Centre based in Bangkok: The emerging EU / ASEAN trade negotiations includes the development of a Europe - ASEAN Business Centre based in Bangkok, Thailand with its broad roles seen as: • • •

Carry out advocacy Serving as gateway to ASEAN Be engaged as a Service Provider

And in more detail – seen from a Thai perspective: • • • • • • •

Provide support to European companies from all 27 EU Member States (MS). (Currently there are 10 bilateral EU Chambers of Commerce, 20 MS Embassies and a number of Trade councils in Thailand.) Carry out advocacy with a European voice towards the Thai Government and other entities. Complementing EC led market access teams in private sectors. Cover trade policy issues from an industry / trade point of view acting as a resource centre for the EC Delegation, Chambers of Commerce and MS commercial services. Strengthen EU companies awareness / knowledge on opportunities in Thailand / ASEAN. Complementing services which today are not or partially provided by Chambers of Commerce and / or by MS commercial services. Coordinating / strengthening common European promotion activities.

The development of the European – ASEAN Business Centre is based on an EU grant to be published within the November 2009 – January 2010 period. It is assumed signing taking place in Q2 2010 with an expected start up of the Centre in mid 2010. It is anticipated to have an Advisory Board providing overall guidance for the Business Centre with Members of this Board coming from MS Embassies, EC Delegation and other key stakeholders such as Chambers of Commerce. During the implementation of the EC funding it is foreseen to have a Steering Committee ensuring stated goals to complement / adding value to existing services will be achieved. The ten EU Chambers of Commerce in Thailand including the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce have formed a consortium in cooperation with Eurochambres for the tender of the European – ASEAN Business Centre. Expecting to join our consortium are the Thai-Swiss and Thai-Norwegian Chambers of Commerce in Thailand and ASEAN based Chambers and Business Associations. We believe our long standing presence in Thailand, large networks within the foreign and Thai business communities, strong dialogue with and access to the Thai Government and Authorities complemented by our cooperation with Eurochambres, their vast European network and resources as well as linking with ASEAN based Chambers and Associations makes our Consortium a strong contender for and the best operator of the European – ASEAN Business Centre. Yours sincerely John Svengren

TSCC - THAI SWEDISH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Anders Lundquist - founder of Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce

Connections Twenty years ago, Anders Lundquist was among the founders of Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Thailand. He wanted to connect Thai and Swedish businessmen in order to see Thai - Swedish trade and investment expand. Today Anders Lundquist continues to be a very active businessman. He is founder and President of his own successful recruitment company Pacific 2000 which is just like the Chamber - all about connecting people. Looking back, Anders Lundquist is satisfied with the way the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce has turned out today.

W

hen Anders Lundquist looks back on the past 20 years he has spent in Thailand, he has every reason to be proud of his achievements. Not only is his own recruitment company Pacific 2000 expanding and opening up new braches, but he can also be pleased with his contribution to Swedish business life in Thailand. Through it all his keyword has been to connect people. Up through the 1980’s there was no such thing as a Swedish Chamber of Commerce. That was until Anders Lundquist arrived in Bangkok to work for SEBanken. With a background as a Manager in the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in London it was only natural for him to take part in forming the Thai-Swedish Business Association which superseded the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce . In February 1989 the Thai-Swedish Business Association was inaugurated by HM Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen

Silvia. One year later it was upgraded to the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce as we know it today. “Our vision from the start was to have a forum and a voice in the ThaiSwedish business community and to foster friendship and understanding, to promote business, trade and investment between our two countries, also regarding cultural and sporting events,” Anders Lundquist, 64, says. Of course, Anders was very active in the Chamber from the start. He served as the very first Chamber President from 1990 to 1994, and again from 2000 to 2002. He was on the Board for 12 years. “I had the pleasure and honour to serve as President and in some of our efforts we were forerunners. For example, one of our visions was to promote Swedish related business in neighbouring countries and we were the first international Chamber to arrange business delegations to Vietnam and Laos,” Anders tells.

ANDERS LUNDQUIST: CONNECTIONS

Another important issue for the Swedish Chamber took place in 1992. “Of great importance was also to get increasingly more involved in joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce activities. In 1992 we got a seat on Thailand’s ‘Board of Trade.’ As the Chamber President I was selected as a member of the Board of Investment’s working group ‘Phoenix’ on how to improve Thailand’s image after the political incident that year,” says Anders. He always knew the importance of connecting people in order to create business and ideas. “Personally, I wanted a good mix of both Swedes and Thais in the Chamber. I also hoped to see smaller companies join, not only the major ones. And of course I wished to see ladies on the Board. The latter took a few years but it happened.”

Around the world

All his life Anders Lundquist has been involved in business which has taken him around the world. He was born in Skellefteå north of Stockholm but moved to the capital and took his MBA at the Stockholm School of Economics. When he was 25 years old he got a scholarship in London working for the Swedish Chamber of Commerce. He spent three years there, then four years in Nottingham as a Managing Director for a Swedish furniture company. It was here he met his British wife with whom he has two sons. In Nottingham he got a phone call from the Swedish Trade Council who wanted him to go to Jeddah in South Arabia as a Deputy Trade commissioner, later to be appointed as Trade Commissioner. He stayed there for three years. “While I was in Jeddah, I was approached by SEBanken. They asked me to go to Sweden for an interview which lasted a whole day. Then they offered me to become Head of the Middle East covering 26 countries working at the Head Office in Stockholm. After five years, the Managing Director wanted me to go to Asia for SEB,” Anders recalls. At that time SEB had four offices in Asia; Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing and Tokyo. Anders agreed and moved with his family to Singapore in 1986. Four years later they asked him to

10

open up the office and BIBF-Branch in Thailand. Anders couldn’t resist the challenge. “We were the only Scandinavian bank in Thailand and it was very exciting,” says Anders who became very active in the business society starting up the Chamber and the SEB Branch at the same time. So, five years after, when SEB in 1995 asked him to move back to Stockholm in a promotion, he didn’t take it.

Some 400,000 Swedes go to Thailand every year and 10,000 own a second home in Thailand. Trading has increased and I hope and think we have played a small part in that success.

came to him. “In Thailand I had many connections so I started noticing how numerous people were calling me when they needed help to in their search for talent. I knew I could do something with those connections, so I started up my own recruitment company Pacific 2000,” Anders tells. Pacific 2000 is an executive recruitment/Headhunting company with around 100 international companies among their clients. Anders has offices in Bangkok, Siracha and Singapore and will soon open a new office in Vietnam. In Bangkok, the office is located at All Seasons Place and counts 12 staff that all focus on matching candidates and clients. “My dream was to turn it into one of the leading firms in Thailand and the region and so far I’m very happy with the result,” he says and has high hopes for the growth. “During the next two years I intend to hand over the daily running of the company to one of my Thai colleagues so I can focus on our regional expansion. Thereafter, I hope I will be able to follow further developments of the company from backstage for years to come,” he reveals.

Advice for the Chamber

“I felt that I had done it before, so I asked for leave of absence. First, they declined but later they called me up and said I could take two years off,” Anders says.

Left the bank

He joined another company Thai Match as Managing Director and when the two years were over and SEB wanted him back to Stockholm, a break was inevitable. Again, it was all about connections for Anders. “I decided to leave the bank but SEB was extremely supportive when I told them about my decision. I had been away from Sweden for too long and if I went back I felt my network would not be the same as when I left. I knew I would regret going back and not do anything else in life,” Anders says with honesty. He left the bank and looked for the right opportunity to start a new career. And in a way the new career

Twenty years ago he started up the Thai-Swedish Chamber and in retrospect he is very satisfied with the achievements. “Some 400,000 Swedes go to Thailand every year and 10,000 own a second home in Thailand. Trading has increased and I hope and think we have played a small part in that success,” Anders tells. However, asked directly if he has any suggestion for improving the Chamber, his answer is: “I think the Chamber should reactivate itself in networking events, like the after-office get-togethers. Before, we held networking in different company offices and it always started out with a little presentation about the company. My constructive advice is to meet in company premises instead of a hotel where everything is more impersonal,” he says. Because for Anders Lundquist it is all about connecting people.

True Adventurer:

Born with Wings To tell the story about Peter RehnÊs life is like going on an adventure on one of his beloved yacht ships. The journey is unpredictable, the ship has hit some rough storms on its way and will never know when or where to end but has somehow always found its way around. One thing is for sure. It is a unique adventure. So, jump onboard! By Rikke Bjerge Johansen Photos by Rikke Bjerge Johansen/private

His yacht is now a charter boat for tourists offering day trips from Hua Hin.

S

oon celebrating his 75 year birthday this year, Peter Rehn is doing status over his busy and exciting life. He only regrets one single thing looking back. “I should have found Thailand earlier,” he says. The man behind Pattaya Country Club, Hua Hin Yacht Club and the biggest import of golf clubs to Thailand has been around and it is impossible to tell the story of Peter’s life in one article. That’s why he has just written and printed his own biography, called ‘I did it my way’. 388 pages tell the story of his long life full of adventures which has lead to where his home is now: Hua Hin in Thailand. Despite his age he is a busy man running numerous business, such as Hua Hin Yacht Club, the big, successful restaurant 3 Girls Hua Hin as well as a real estate agency.

I have wings

Peter’s story begins in Sweden in 1934 when he was born in Stockholm. He grew up in a good family and got a juristic education. He worked in an insurance company and quickly became their number one sales guy. They gave him his own fancy office but it wasn’t enough.

“Money is not happiness. Happiness is to make money,” Peter Rehn says.

“I found it boring. As the only one in my family I was born with an adventure gen,” he remembers. As a young man he hitch hiked to Africa but the real passion was not travelling on the road but on water. “My parents owned a summer house outside Stockholm and my uncle had a sailboat and taught me how to sail. I got my first boat when I was 20 years old and now I’m on my number ten,” he says with a boyish smile. The abrupt need for sailing has been with him all his life and has always determined his choices. It has brought him around the world but has also been haunting him. “I’m born with wings and they have only grown stronger over the years. No one, including myself understands why I all of a sudden can skip a career, leave my wife and children and my home to get ocean breeze and freedom to sail around the world,” he says thoughtfully. After a while he adds: “But it gives me the absolute freedom which is very rare to have in

your daily life. On the boat, you are the boss, you don’t need a passport and can go to Asia or Africa. You don’t even need any money if you can catch fish. All you need is a strong, good boat.”

Dated a princess

It was on his first, big adventure around the world for five years in the 70’s on his boat “Life V” that Peter first arrived to Thailand. He instantly liked the country and decided to settle in Pattaya. In Sweden he was still married to a beautiful, Swedish woman with whom he had children but the couple later divorced and although Peter had many women since he never got married again. Not even with the Princess of Kuwait with whom he had a love romance. She wanted to take him home, give him a new life and work for her extremely wealthy family. The pictures in his biography with him and the Princess prove the truth of the story. Continued on page 24

PETER REHN: BORN WITH WINGS

“The thoughts kept running in my mind. But the Princess was not what I wanted for the rest of my life. Deep down inside I wanted to have freedom that only a yacht and the ocean can give me, so I had to turn her down in a long telegram,” he remembers.

Gold and lottery

They eat what they catch. This is where Peter feels at home. On his yacht sailing around the world.

16

www.swecham.com

When you take a look at the highlights of Peter’s business life there is no obvious red line. However, asking Peter they all share a main factor: “I only do things I like and I have a feeling for success. I know instantly if a project will fail. Every time everyone says that I’m crazy I will prove them wrong. Money is not happiness. Happiness is to make money,” he says. One big success was when Peter started the lottery ‘Svenska Lotteri AB’ which was a nationwide success. Another success was his gem stones which involved Thailand. On his journey around the world he discovered that he could buy very cheap stones in Sri Lanka and bring them to Thailand. In Bangkok they had invented a technique to heat stones to more than 2000 degrees and slowly cool them down. The result was deep blue sapphires that he sold to gemstone shops in Bangkok. He also started up the business Guldkontroll AB in Sweden. It was very controversial since Guldkontroll AB bought gold from the public, mainly broken things and teeth with gold fillings along with lots of old silver coins from Sweden. The gold prices increased and Peter earned a lot of money. However, it couldn’t last, and once the gold prices dropped and the Swedish tax knocked on the door, Peter left the country immediately and went back to Thailand where he has now spent the past 28 years. He moved to Bangkok and bought two houses on Sukhumvit soi Thonglor. He started up the Pattaya Yacht club with tourist trips from Pattaya to the undiscovered islands. It became a success but the mafia who ran the whole ocean did everything they could to stop his business. Very tragically, they ended up sinking Peter’s yacht, and killing his German captain and his girlfriend. Peter was in shock and gave up his Pattaya Yacht Club.

PETER REHN: BORN WITH WINGS

Golf importer

Instead Peter started importing golf clubs. “I used to play golf in Sweden and it made me angry that golf clubs out here were so expensive,” Peter tells. To solve the problem he found that the grips were made in a little town in the south of Taiwan. He flew there, got a deal to buy the grips for one dollar a piece and imported them to Thailand. He put the club together and sold them for 4500 baht a piece but no one wanted them. Only when he started selling them for 24.000 baht and up the sales boomed. “They were suspicious of the quality when I sold them too cheap. It was a show off sport for the Thais and in the late 80’s to mid 90’s I became the biggest importer in the country,” says Peter who also began designing golf courses, among them the extremely successful Pattaya Country Club.

Severe cancer

Seven years ago Peter moved to Hua Hin with his new Thai woman Tum. “Hua Hin is the best. It’s quiet, it has golf courses, no sex business, the size of town is perfect and the beach is nice.” He started Real Estate Hua Hin and was building hundreds of houses for Scandinavian customers. He also imported swimming pools and started up a restaurant called ‘3 Girls Hua Hin’, which is now the biggest in the area. Of course the urge for sailing kept knocking on Peter’s door, so Peter found his dream yacht in La Paz, Mexico and named it yacht Life X. However, only three days before

18

www.swecham.com

take-off in April 2007 Peter became very sick. He had severe cancer and a heavy infection and they had to remove his prostate. After the hospitalization Peter insisted on going back to Mexico to sail the yacht back to Hua Hin even though the doctors and family warned him. “No one has ever been able to stop me from sailing. No women, no job and no disease,” he says. He flew to Mexico in November 07 to start the journey and was in a wheelchair on arrival. But after two days sailing he felt ten years younger and he continued his journey over the Pacific Ocean with great success. Along went a Swedish captain and Peter’s daughter and her husband. “I’m sure the trip cured me. I could feel it instantly,” he says. It was quite a journey and on May 08 Peter was back safe in Hua Hin. He converted the yacht into a luxury day charter boat which takes tourists on daytrips to small islands. Business is good and Peter’s boat is out every second day. Peter is still on steady ground - but not for long. Even though he definitely doesn’t need any more projects, he is already planning his next. “I want to buy a new boat and sail her back. There is absolutely no need, I know, but I just can’t stop myself,” he says with the boyish smile.

Praphan has high expectations for the newest Volvo Models S40 and V50. 20

My Nickname is

Volvo For 24 years Praphan has been working for Volvo in Bangkok. He is now the Automotive Director of Volvo Operation and has been with Volvo from the start. He is proud to have opened a brand new service center and showroom right in downtown. By Rikke Bjerge Johansen

I

n 1986 a young Praphan Yentharua joined Volvo family as a sales consultant in Bangkok. 24 years later he is still in business and a very well-known person within the Volvo community. He started as a sales consultant and worked his way up to the top. The passion for the Swedish car brand has still remained even though his title has changed to Automotive Director of Volvo Operation.

“When I started in the company, the brand was not quite popular here yet but I have watched it grow to become what it is today,” He says. He works for Wearnes Automotive which is a Singaporean company, registered in Thailand under the name Rank P.T. O’Conner’s Co. Ltd. They are car dealers for Volvo in Thailand and actually the biggest Volvo Dealership in Southeast Asia. Praphan is Director of the offices and showrooms in Huamark in the same building as the big Volvo showroom, Ladprao and the newest one in the Lumpini-area with more than 100 employees in total. “We just opened the new service center in Lumpini on Rama IV just opposite the Lumpini Boxing Stadium. We have many customers there and it is a popular area. It is both a customer service repair and a showroom where you can get your Volvo repaired,” Praphan says.

Passion for cars

Praphan is a modest man who doesn’t want to talk about his own achievements for Volvo, for example when he has won as the best sales consultant in South East Asia four years in a row. But no doubt about the

Cars have always been a big passion of his. “From high school have I studied and specialized in cars. I have always preferred cars for transportation, like for example road trips,” he says. For him Volvo was a natural choice. “I joined the Volvo family because I loved the Swedish car even though it was not known in Thailand back then. But then and now the Volvo equals quality, no compromises regarding safety and environmental care combined with good design,” Praphan tells. As a part of his job he has been to Gothenburg numerous times for dealer conferences and training. He finds the Thai and Scandinavian culture quite similar.

“Compared to other European cultures I think we have more in common with the Scandinavian culture. We work hard, but like to enjoy freedom and life like you. Our working style is more Scandinavian and the Scandinavians love our country,” says Praphan.

Will grow together

As the only company in Thailand, Wearnes Automotive also provides

international sales and duty free Volvos for embassies and international organisations. So, even though it is no secret that times are tough at the moment, Praphan stays positive regarding the future. He is convinced that Wearnes Automotive and Volvo will grow together. “It is hard times for premium brands and sales has gone down everywhere. However, I see it as an opportunity to expand and grow the Volvo business. We are hiring 20 more employees now that we have the new outlet on Lumpini to serve more customers.” The Volvo buyers in Thailand consist of around 20 percent foreigners and 80 percent Thais, typically business people. However, with the latest models, Volvo hopes to target the young families too. “The first one is S40 for young executives. The other one is V50, a station wagon, perfect for families. Combined with reasonable price at 1,799,000 Thai baht the Volvo quality and models, we are ready to target the younger group. We expect much from the future,” Praphan says. ERIC JOHANSSON

Construction Pro in Thailand Eric Johansson from Malmö now calls Thailand his home. He has build up three companies, has a wife and a daughter, and he loves to play golf and go motor crossing. By Morten Scheelsbeck

S

wedish Eric Johansson is 45 years old. He moved to Thailand all by himself in 1992 to try his luck as an independent businessman. Now he has a wife and a daughter here, and he calls Thailand his home. He has several businesses running already, and he has several new ideas on the drawing board for the coming years.

In love with Thailand

Eric ended up in Thailand by a bit of a coincidence. Back in the early 90s he was working in Australia. On his way back to Malmö, where Eric was born and raised, he made a brief stop in Thailand, and he was instantly crazy about the country. “I was crazy about Thailand right away and I could see so many opportunities here that I just had to stay,” Eric Johansson says, and he wasted no time. With his educations from Sweden as a carpenter and a concrete specialist he began his new life: “I started the business right away. I went from door to door, offering help with renovations in people’s houses.

24

www.swecham.com

I painted the walls and restored people’s houses, while they were home in for instance Scandinavia. When they came back, everything was shining, and the business grew quickly.” Today, 17 years later, Eric has more than 250 employees in his three companies, and says in great confidence: “Yes, 250 today, but soon it will be 300. It is pointless being like anyone else, and I am not scared of saying what my goals are: Starting business, making money, and getting satisfied customers.”

EricÊs projects

The three companies are covering different parts of the same industry. Europe Low Energy House Co. Ltd. (ELEH) was founded more than 10 years ago. ELEH is today behind the construction of houses and resorts in Pattaya, Krabi, and Hua Hin, and Eric is lurking on soon to move into the market in Bangkok. The company Nam-tech Co. Ltd. was founded five years ago, and operates with floor drains and water proofing systems to both older and new houses, and in addition to that, Eric is now going to start up a large building centre in Hua Hin, named Maxi Building Centre. Here, both private customers and companies are to buy quality items for their houses. The items can be anything from IKEA kitchens and air conditioning installations to swimming pools and new floors.

New house: 45 days

Eric’s first customers, when he started up in Thailand, came in house by word of mouth. Satisfied customers told it on to their friends, and that is still

ERIC JOHANSSON

how it works for a great deal of the customers: “About 60 percent of my customers today are either former clients or friends of satisfied customers who have been recommended to buy a house from us,” says Eric, who is obviously proud of his reputation. He continues: “Our business is not necessarily the cheapest. We are more or less like all the others when it comes to

the prices. But it is my goal that our customers have a very fair deal. They should know that there can be no such thing as a 100 percent quality on anything in this country, but in return they can trust us, and we are extremely fast,” Eric says. He mentions that when a customer orders a house constructed by ELEH, it only takes 45 days before the elements of the house is on the soil, and then only a further 45 days before

the house is ready to move into. The steel is by the way imported from Sweden.

“It is very easy to get construction work done here, but it is much harder to get a good result,” he concludes. Eric Johansson reveals that he will in the future concentrate on repeating the successes of the Thai construction industry in Cambodia. They are just not quite ready for it yet in his opinion: “Cambodia are years behind Thailand in all areas, but I am sure that it is their turn for five or maybe up to 10 years. And then I am ready to play along,” Eric Johansson confidently emphasizes.

SCANIA Ambitions By the end of last year, Mr. Vichai Jirathiyut, MD of Scania Siam announced that the goal for 2009 was an increase of 15 percent in business. Was that realistic considerng the current economic crisis, and what has in fact been realized? By Morten Scheelsbeck

V

ichai Jirathiyut is Managing Director of Scania Siam, which has its headquarters east of Bangkok in the area Bangplee. In late 2008 he made a startling statement. Scania Siam’s goal for 2009 was a growth of no less than 15 percent, although the international crisis now was beginning to set in seriously. As we are now approaching the endof the year, it is time to look towards Scania and confront them with their aggressive statement. Could he and his team live up to their own ambitious goal? “Yes, I can already promise that we will reach the 15 percent, and we will also reach well beyond,” a confident Mr Vichai says. So how did they achieve it? Mr. Vichai is very open about the strategies, that has led to this expansion.

New segments

In order to achieve the goal of prosperity despite the financial crisis Scania would have to renew their strategies. Think in new ways. Scania’s main ventures this year have therefore been divided into two new areas. The first aimed at work related to the many mines in particular the western and northern Thailand. Here, using trucks to transport zinc and coal from the mines was the idea, and that is an area in which Scania has succeeded in putting itself on the map. “There’s obviously been a lot of preparation before our new ventures. We have looked very carefully at the various options and we were during the course very confident that mining was an extremely good market to move into. And it has been,” Vichai Jirathiyut explains, designating the effort with the mines as Scania’s main effort. The director explains that Scania in his opinion has won the most tasks because they have been offering the most practical solutions for both mineowners and customers compared to their competitors. Scania delivered 30 trucks to mining in the spring, and here in November, they are going to deliver 30 more. However, there have already plans for further deliveries of trucks.

New opportunities

The reason why Scania suddenly aims so much on moving into new markets is very straightforward: “It simply looked bad in several areas of the business. It can be difficult to answer, whether it was the financial crisis, or whether it was our own fault, but we were certainly under pressure and had to think in new ways, and so we did,” the Director explains. During several meetings with other departments of Scania in the region he fetched treasured experiences, especially from Indonesia where Scania has more than 700 trucks running in mining industry. The experiences were so positive that it was something they immediately began to think into the future in Scania Siam. “We began finding new operators which would allow us to enter new markets, and perhaps the financial crisis actually has been good for us, because we offered ourselves as available to new partners at a time

30

www.swecham.com

when we were the best,” Khun Vichai says in confidence. He further explains that Scania is already looking for new and even more areas to expand and use the new contacts and new the know-how, such as mines in Laos.

Up and down

Another area where Scania has got more revenue this year is within the fuel transportation. Recently, the Swedish company in Thailand sold 45 new trucks to Shell subcontractors, and this is also a part of the explanation of the growth. But not in all areas of business life has been a bed of roses for Scania. Director Vichai explains that the company has been set violently back in terms of container shipping. That decline he attributes to the down turn in exports from Thailand that has generally been exposed, after the financial crisis sat in. That is exactly one of the main reasons why additional need for Scania to begin thinking innovatively was urgent. Henceforth, Scania will do more in transport by country roads instead of container traffic, the Director says. So, there have been both pluses and minuses, ups and downs in the various parts of the company the last years. The interesting question is now, whether the growth in the new areas has been enough to turn the ambitious goal of 15 percent growth into reality.

The goal reached

Has the ventures paid off, and it is already realistic for Scania to hope to reach the 15 percent growth, Vichai Jirathiyut ambitiously announced late last year? Yes it has, if we are to believe the Director, who seems to have waited all day on that very issue: “Yes, I can already promise that we will reach the 15 percent, and we will also reach well beyond. It is still a little hard to figure out where exactly our truck sales will end up over the last months of the year, but right now it looks as it can be both 20 percent and 25 percent over last year. It is really satisfying,” the clearly proud Director says. Khun Vichai gives an increased internal efficiency and new segments of the business the profit of the positive figures, and he promises at the same time that Scania will continue its optimistic and very ambitious approach:

Born in Bangkok

Khun Vichai has been at the head of Scania Siam since 2003, and he is gradually becoming a well trained Director. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Bangkok and a Masters’ in Marketing from London. He joined Scania in 1991 and moved consistently up through the company hierarchy, and before he came right in the head, he has been second in command for a while. Khun Vichai was born and raised in Bangkok, and for him it is something special to be allowed to stand at the head of a foreign firm: “I’m really proud that Scania has so much confidence in me that they would put me at the head of a Swedish firm. It is an extra pat on the shoulder for me that they put a ‘foreigner’ as me as a Managing Director,” he says, and explains that it has always been the private business communities, which has been interesting to him: “I could never se myself being employed in a governmental position. There is too much bureaucracy, and things are moving slowly. Here it goes in quickly, and that is how I like it.”

“Our goal for next year is already set. There, we will have a growth of 30 percent compared to this year,” Vichai Jirathiyut estimates selfassured. Scania plans to boost growth next year by extending the new investments and develop them even further, such as by investing in new segments around the mining operation in for instance Northern Thailand and Laos.

IKEA COMES TO TOWN

IKEA

Finally Invades Thailand Swedish furniture giant can place yet another pin on the South East Asian map in 2011. By Tobias Jagd

A

fter three years of searching, and many more of planning, the Singapore based company Ikano has finally found the right spot for the first Thai IKEA. It is supposed to open in the, yet to be build, Mega Bangna on the Bangnatrat ring road in November 2011. The Mega Bangna is a new megamall, which will be built for the occasion. Thai-Sweden review, is told by Tom Huzell, Managing Director of Ikano Singapore. The 40,000 m2 IKEA will be operated by Ikano Thailand ltd. a company owned by Ikano Singapore, which is fully owned by Ikano Luxembourg - the last owned solely by the IKEA founding family. So contrary to most stores in the IKEA chain, which are run on a franchise basis, the first Thai IKEA will have ties directly back to the Kamprad family. Ikano Singapore has been planning a Bangkok opening and searched for locations several times before, but didn’t get the green light from the mother company before recently. The reason is, that more than 90% of all IKEA stores are operated on a franchise basis, and it’s only logistically possible to open around 30 - 35 stores a year – worldwide. Because of building time, management training, securing supply lines and so on. And last but not least, the stores

planned to open are - of course, chosen with focus on what the chain considers to be the best, most profitable business locations. Therefore IKEA Bangkok has been waiting in line with all the other prospects. But finally the time has come for Bangkok to become yet another city on the IKEA world map that stretches over 35 countries. Another reason for the relatively late IKEA arrival in Thailand, and why Ikano Singapore has not been more aggressive, about opening in Bangkok, is the country’s unusual high import duties, making the profit margin very pressed, as Tom Huzell explains

“Even though we think, that Bangkok, as a market, has been mature for a long time - we don’t expect it to be a goldmine, because of the tax issues. But if you want to be a player in global business, you have to be represented in all major cities, and hopefully the tax system will change in the future?” www.swecham.com

IKEA COMES TO TOWN “Even though we think, that Bangkok, as a market, has been mature for a long time - we don’t expect it to be a goldmine, because of the tax issues. But if you want to be a player in global business, you have to be represented in all major cities, and hopefully the tax system will change in the future?” he says.

Joint venture

Because of the many obstacles in the Thai foreign business act like: No foreign companies are allowed to operate retail business, service businesses (restaurant in the store) etc., but most important – foreign companies are not allowed to own land in Thailand, Ikano decided to form a joint venture regarding the Mega Bangna project, where the IKEA store will be located,Tom Huzell reveals. The main partner in that company became the well known SF group (Siam Future development) Thailand’s third biggest mall owner. Both companies own a 49% share of the Mega Bangna and the last 2% are owned by IKEAs local supplier SB furniture, a company that has produced IKEA products for more than 20 years. “We could have set up some kind of solution on our own, but IKEA is a very famous and respected brand, so

34

www.swecham.com

we want to keep our hands clean and not get involved in any kind of shady deals – like so many other companies, wanting to operate on their own in Thailand, end up doing”

Mega project

Mega Bangna’s building cost will be around 15 billion Thb., with roughly 11 billion spent on the shopping mall and 4 billion on the IKEA store.

The mall will be 250.000 m2 with the IKEA occupying the 40.000 m2 the rest will be leased out to approximately 500 shops. Tom Huzell believes the 8000 parking spaces will be filled by cars coming from a radius of 50 kilometers. With the planned size of 40.000 m2 Bangkok’s first IKEA will become a very big store within the chain, and be one of the 10% biggest IKEAs worldwide. Ikano expects around 5 million visitors a year – in the IKEA alone, bringing the Bangkok store in the world’s top 20 of the chains most visited. Tom Huzell expects that the construction of Mega Bangna will create 20.000 jobs in the construction phase alone, not counting the many extra people employed with manufacturing materials for the building site. The IKEA store is expected to employ around 450 people and the mall around 6000. So as Tom Huzell dryly points out “It’s not a small project!” He believes that the first IKEA store in Bangkok will also benefit Thai manufacturers in the long run. Because many will suddenly be able to visit an IKEA for the first time and see the products offered. That normally leads to local manufacturers seeing opportunities in offering existing products, at a better price, generating more manufacturing business in Thailand for IKEA worldwide. Ikano Singapore plans to build in all three IKEA stores in Bangkok over the next 10 – 12 years. The company already operates two stores in Singapore and one in Malaysia. The next step to expand the SE Asian adventure further will be opening stores in Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

He was general manager in his own founded real estate company Pasupat Realty Co., Ltd. for 18 years until he decided to set up a bigger company with seven business partners. The result was CIT Property, Colliers International Thailand which opened in 2007. “I had my own company for 18 years and realised that I needed to be international in order to compete. So my partners and I decided to become the franchise of Colliers’ more than 290 offices in more than 60 countries,” explains CIT Colliers Managing Director, Patima. With a registered capital of 60 million baht and 130 employees in CIT Colliers it is a decision he has not regretted. 50 of the staff are based in

CIT Colliers is not only selling property. They actually offer a full range of property solutions, like asset management, auction, property and facilities management and tenant representation. Their main business is consultation. “In the past years the residential market was booming but now the business is low so we focus on consultancy for developers, private, government agencies. We are valuers for Communication Authorities of Thailand (CAT) regarding high rise buildings and we do the master planning for Port Authorities regarding the 1000 acres of land in Klong Toey. We do market analysis for Tesco Lotus to find out where it is good to build new stores. We look at consumer behaviour, traffic and demographic analysis. Change the law

In order to help foreigners investing in properties in Thailand Patima is also the Chairman for the Joint Foreign Chamber of Commerce (JFCCT) of the Property Committee. He wants to change the existing rules in order to make it more attractive and easy for foreigners to settle down in Thailand. “We just finished our paper to propose to the government about ‘lease hold extension’. Right now foreigners can only lease 30 years and we have proposed to extend it since we think it is too short a period. Other Asian countries have 70-90 years and therefore we like to extend it to 30 times 30 years instead. It will attract foreigners and solve many problems with illegal contracts,” he says. Also another topic is ready for a change, according to Patima. “Right now foreigners can own 49 percent of a company. As a result you will find many illegal agreements to go about the law. We want the 49 percent to be more in order to make it easier for Swedes and all other foreigners to do business here in Thailand,” he says. Even though the property market all over the world has been in a crisis, Patima stays positive.

“Of course we are not happy after being in a world crisis but we are in an expanding mode. I really do think we will see a difference in the market in the next two years,” he says. “Research has proved that the number of Swedes in Thailand is much higher than other countries, and the Swedish King has been here many times. We have a good, long history together and I believe that ten years ahead around 100,000 Swedes will have a second home here. Swedish Make Up Stores in Thailand

The creative energy behind Make Up Store, Mika Liias.

40

www.swecham.com

TSCC - THAI SWEDISH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

With a unique and identifiable concept the Swedish makeup company Make Up Store has been able to capture great market shares in especially Thailand despite both a financial crisis, complicated bureaucratic obstacles and cultural differences. By: Sarah Mia Haagerup

T

he Swedish makeup story started little over a decade ago in the Swedish capital Stockholm. Former model Mika Liias (born in 1968) opened a make-up school in Sweden but quickly discovered that his students were unable to find good quality products at affordable prices. This triggered Mika Liias to seek out manufacturers, who were able to carry out his unique makeup ideas. His vision was to create a makeup store with great service and beautifully packaged top quality products. Last but not least he wanted to create a world of colours. When his ideas were carried out his students started using the products and recommending them to others and soon his brand was in high demand. In 1996 a basement on the street Drottninggatan in Stockholm became the home of the first Make Up Store. Since then the brand has come a long way and today Make Up Store is one of the fastest growing companies in Scandinavia, with as many as 150 stores worldwide. Make Up Store reached the Singaporean market in 2004, as the first Asian country, and not long thereafter, Asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia followed suit. Today the company has eight stores in Thailand, three in Singapore, two in Malaysia and one in Vietnam and Indonesia. A growing number of Asian consumers are becoming aware of Mika Liias unique products, especially in Thailand

where the products have gained much attention and not least popularity. Despite this, it seems that only a handful of people in Thailand are aware of the fact that Make Up Store is a product of Sweden.

Great future potential in Thailand

Since 2005, only a year after the opening in Singapore, women in Thailand have been able to pamper themselves with Make Up Store’s colourful and innovative products. According to Mika Liias it is especially emerging markets like the one in Thailand that represent great future potential due to the country’s growing interest in fashion and cosmetics, as the middle income increases and a growing number of women step into working life. Therefore there are great long term rewards to gain for the company here. To promote the brand in Thailand the people of Make Up Store worked a lot with in-store promotional activities, events, and traditional marketing strategies. The company got a good start and has gradually managed to get reach expected brand recognition.

An identifiable concept

Make Up Stores around the world follow the same core values and store concepts. Greta Sjöbom, PR Director at Make Up Store, is sure this is one of the key reasons behind the company’s success.

”Make Up Store offers top quality products at reasonable prices, that fact combined with excellent customer service and consistency of brand values and philosophy, influencing every part of the concept from packaging to store design, makes us visible, recognizable as well as accessible and this is something customers globally seem to appreciate and value.” But still it will take some time before Make Up Store is a household name in Thailand as it is in Sweden, she adds. Even though the company has gained great popularity in Thailand it was in Singapore that Make Up Store experienced the quickest success. “Singapore was an instant success, due to fantastic local franchises with local market knowledge and personal drive and motivation. The local retail market in Singapore was also at the time of entry at a more advanced stage,” Mika Liias says.

New challenges overseas

As a result of Make Up Store’s commitment to the Thai market, the company has been faced with new and different kinds of challenges. Licensing of cosmetics and hygiene articles has been very problematic, time consuming, expensive and complicated. The procedures have often involved complex forms to be stamped, complex lists of ingredients, certified copies and so on - a lot of complicated information to be reported, Mika Liias explains. Also

general cultural differences within the Make Up Store management team and store staff have been an obstacle. But nevertheless the company have been able to manage this through an extensive educational and mentorship program monitored from Sweden, on site training and by giving the employees access to language training provided by the Make Up Store. Knowledge about communication and corporate procedures has been passed on with respect to Thai corporate traditions and values, Mika Liias adds. Even though different challenges and cultures often mean new market strategies Make Up Store hasn’t made any significant changes in order to fit in overseas. “Make Up Store’s concept isn’t tweaked to fit local markets. One of our core values is to have all products available at all points of sale and therefore it is very important with accessibility and assortment. Today’s trends tend to be global and only have minor differences. They tend to occur after or before each other at different points in time and locality,” Mika Liias says. One thing Make Up Store has done in order to meet demands on the Asian market is to develop a new product called Brightening Serum. The serum quickly became a bestseller in especially Thailand. The Brightening Serum evens the skin, removes dark spots and retrogrades the skin tone

Financial downturn an opportunity

At a time where lots of markets are at an economical downturn there are still optimistic forces to find especially

42

Brightening Serum: Make Up Store’s popular Brightening Serum created exclusively for the Asian market. Products with brightening effects are very popular in Thailand unlike in Scandinavia where most people seem to grab every chance they get at a darker and more ‘sunkissed’ look.

Makeup from Make Up Store: You can find The Make Up Store eight places in Thailand: Central Festival (Phuket), Central Festival (Pattaya), Central Lad Prao (Bangkok), Central World (Bangkok), Siam Center (Bangkok), Siam Paragan (Bangkok), The Mall Ngam Wong Wan (Bangkok), Zen Department Store (Bangkok). within the Make Up Store, where the financial crisis has been considered more as a possibility for growth than as a setback. “During these hard times, with a global financial crisis we see possibilities and opportunities to grow and develop from the Asian markets. We have high hopes of new market entries, improved sales and larger

market shares,” Mika Liias says. In his opinion the Asian market hasn’t reacted like the market in Europe. The fruits of the financial crisis have primarily consisted of access to more cost efficient rental agreements. Like access to better locations at a better price, which have had the spin-off effects as cost efficiency and better flows of customers, improved sales, increased market shares and brand value. Altogether the company has experienced a very low decrease in sales, actually almost non-existing, Greta Sjöbom says. “In some cases the sales have even increased since the initial phases of the global financial crisis. A lot of retailers even those with strong concepts have been struck by lower sales or corporate downsizing which has given more opportunities for companies like us, whom have confidence in the strength of the concept and continuous innovation within the product line to keep us one step ahead,” she explains. Even though Make Up Store is founded on the idea of franchising, the franchise model is not used in Thailand. In Thailand all stores and counters are monitored within the Make Up Store Corporation. At the moment Make Up Store is looking for suitable business partners and master franchisees in Japan, China and Hong Kong. The company is also planning on opening a new store in Indonesia this autumn.

BIG MONEY IN CO2 TRADING

How to Invest in

CDM Projects in Thailand Billions of CO2-dollars are traded around the world. In Thailand, Swedish companies can get a share of the carbon-cake by investing in Thai companies. At the moment, Sweden is a fairly unknown player on the market. By Rikke Bjerge Johansen

T

rading with carbon-credit is big business. It is like a stock. Buy a carbon credit and sell it to a higher price and we are talking billions

of dollars. Swedish companies can get a share of the carbon credits through investments in Thai companies that are reducing green house gas emissions. Sweden’s neighbour in Scandinavia, Denmark is one of the leading players on the Thai market with 19 government founded projects in Thailand with one Danish company ‘Danish Energy Management’ based in Thailand keeping track of all the projects. However, this is not the way Sweden is playing the CDM-game. “Regarding actual investments in companies, Sweden does not have the same type of authority as Denmark’s Danish Energy Management making sure Danish companies invest in Thai companies. And the Swedish Energy Agency does not keep track of Swedish investments in foreign countries even if they would be under the framework of CDM,” says Josefin Hedbrandh, Programme manager of the Swedish CDM and JI Programme,

International Climate Policy Section. Håkan Nylander from the Swedish Trade Council in Thailand believes so far no Swedish companies have entered this market. ”Since the environmental sector is quite broad, it is some times difficult to say if there are Swedish companies involved or not in certain projects. As far as we know there is no Swedish companies registered for a CDM project in Thailand. However, some companies might be working with an agent or distributor or in a partnership and thus there might be a Swedish interest in some projects, but we have no way of knowing this,” Håkan Nylander says.

Started in Kyoto

The history of carbon trading started in Kyoto in Japan in 1997. It was here the members of the United Nations agreed on the Kyoto Protocol, which is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The members acknowledged the fact that we humans are all contributing to the increasing emissions of industrial gasses into the atmosphere – and which is believed to result in global warming, one of the hottest topics in the world right now. So, the members signed the Kyoto Protocol which is a binding agreement that the industrialized countries will reduce their collective emissions of greenhouse gases by 5% compared to the year 1990 over a five-year period from 2008-12 – also called the first commitment period. It was then up to the individual countries who subsequently ratified the protocol to find out how much they would reduce at the national level. Within the European Union a linking directive has been established.

CDM PROJECT OPPORTUNITIES

Chief Advisor Karsten Holm of Danish Energy Management

This involves a Carbon credit trading system as well as an allocation plan where the member gets ‘allowances’ which can also be translated into “their right to discharge a maximum amount of CO2”. Every country has their share of companies which are emitting a lot and which are included in an allocation plan. It is big industries like power plants. Each government gives each of them a ratio of allowance, ex. 10.000 tonnes CO2 per year that they have to keep under. Eventually, if they only emit half of their quota they can sell the rest of their allowance to other companies that may have emitted more than their limit. However, if they have used more than they are allowed, they have to buy CO2 credits from other companies or pay a fine which at present is 100 Euros per 1 tonne extra CO2 emitted. When a country gets carboncredits they can either use it for own benefit or sell to other countries which need it. And there are different ways to get those extra carbon-credits: Emission trading (a new commodity). The term that is used in this general context is: Assigned Amount Units: You can buy credits from other industrial countries that have signed the Koyto Protocol. It means if Germany has discharged more, they have to buy credits from countries that have extra or a surplus. Joint implementation: Projects. A company in Sweden can cooperate with a company in Czech Republic and help or invest in the Czech company to reduce CO2 emissions. It could be making their power plant more efficient. Then, the Swedish company reserves the rights of the generated carbon credit and can save it for own use or sell. CDM: Relevant in Thailand. A company from an industrial/developed country can help a developing country, like Thailand. It means that a Swedish business can support and help a Thai company with measures that will reduce CO2 emissions and get first priority to buy their credits that they have helped them to generate.

46

www.swecham.com

Chief Advisor Karsten Holm of Danish Energy Management explains how the business works:

Who are the buyers? -

-

-

-

Traders who are buying cheap and sell for a higher price. It can be a private company. Those nations who are obligated to reduce because of the Kyotoprotocol commitments, like Denmark Private or public companies, like DONG ENERGY. Not because they need it for their own company but they can get it for others. Non-profit organisations and NGO’s which have a ‘green’ profile and want to signal that they are carbon neutral, ex. to ‘cover’ flights for their employees, etc. Organisations which buy credits to ‘remove’ them from the market so they can’t be traded. They don’t like the idea of trading and making money on our global environment.

Who are the sellers? -

-

Companies that develop projects ex. in Thailand and use a lot of power or emit a green house gas. Many palm oil mills which make CDM-projects and generates CO2 credits. Pig farms, starch plants, cement plants, power plants, distilleries. Companies in Thailand that invest and reduce their CO2 emissions.

Swedish opportunities

Josefin works for The Swedish Energy Agency which is managing the Swedish CDM and JI program on behalf of the Swedish Government. “We do not invest in companies. We purchase carbon credits from CDM and JI projects under bilateral contracts between us and seller. Currently however, we have no bilateral contract for purchase of Carbon Credits from any CDM project in Thailand. Not saying that we are not interested. We also purchase carbon credits through multilateral institutions as the Asian Development Bank from the Asia Pacific Carbon Fund,” she explains and continues: “The object is to purchase Carbon Credits from CDM and JI projects. In addition to managing the Swedish CDM and JI Purchase program, the Swedish Energy Agency has a role to give information about CDM to Swedish companies interested in engaging in CDM, including Swedish companies interested in investing financially in CDM projects.” ”We have held some seminars for this purpose over the last years. We do not get any regular feedback however from companies, if any, that proceed with their ideas of engagement/investment in CDM project. Regarding CDM’s potential as a new market for technology providers for example, and also for any investors as such investing in clean energy, it is a new source of projects because of the additionally aspect. These

TSCC - THAI SWEDISH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE projects happen due to CDM, and by knowing about CDM, technology providers or investors can easier find these projects as they may not be in their usual sight. Moreover if a company knows about CDM the company can also help realising a project, bring in the CDM component,” she says and lists the following: • CDM improves the finances of a project as it brings an (additional) annual revenue stream to the project. The credits are sold usually on an annual basis after a year emission reductions generated by the project. • A project with a Certified Emission Purchase Agreement (ERPA) for the sale of the credits (the CERs) (between a buyer and a seller) can use this purchase agreement as collateral to attract financing to a project. (a bit like a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for electricity) • As the revenue from the sale of CERs improves the project’s yearly income, the ability to payback a loan improves, first of all an additional revenue might be the reason for a project developer to decide to go forward with the project, and it also makes the project more attractive for investors and debt providers. It can help push the realisation of the project. • If a project can get some up front payment for a share of the CERs they are selling, that up front payment can be used for the investment costs. So in this case CDM can also improve the financing situation for the project investment. • The up front payment can be used as equity. Either that reduces the need to search for investors for equity, or a higher equity stake makes the project more attractive for a debt provider which can improve the terms for the loan.

Different types of possible CDM-projects in Thailand: Energy generation & usage Biomass power generation Renewable energy Energy efficiency Energy conservation Fuel switching Environment & Energy Waste water treatment and biogas generation MSW – biogas Transportation Alternative fuels Efficiency improvements Industrial Processes Changes or alternative industrial processes resulting in GHG emission reduction

LOVISA MÖLLER

New Priest Lovisa MöllerÊs first half year in Thailand has been overshadowed by a task she inherited from her predecessor: to close down the current Church Center in Sukhumvit Soi 33 in Bangkok – but linked to that also the exciting task of creating a new channel to reach out to the increasing number of young Swedish backpackers in Thailand. By Sarah Mia Haagerup

L

ovisa Möller, 46, started her new job as priest of the Swedish church in Bangkok in April 2009 replacing former priest Lennart Hamark, who moved to Hong Kong with his wife Lis and daughter Miranda. Although it hasn’t been the easiest start for Lovisa she is sure that this is the right place for her and that everything will work out. Lovisa’s can’t really say when or why her interest in Asia started. Something about this region has just always appealed to her. While in university she did field studies in Malaysia and Burma and afterwards she went to Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Indonesia and Bali as a backpacker. During her 9 months as a backpacker she actually ended up staying with the Hamarks in Hong Kong. The Hamarks were missionaries in Hong Kong at this time and invited Lovisa and her friend to stay at their house for a couple of days. When she came back from her travels she finished her masters and met her husband Ola. The couple

48

got married just 6 months into their relationship, when Lovisa was 26, and not long thereafter they had their son Anton and daughter Elida. Ola has worked for SIDA for many years – a job which required the family to move around. So from 1993-1996 the family lived in Harare, Zimbabwe. During this time Ola was stationed as an associate professional officer (APO) in a regional agricultural project. Lovisa spent her time at home taking care of Elida who was only 7 months and Anton who was two years old. She was also active in the Evangelic Lutheran Church of Zimbabwe and served as a voluntary Scandinavian pastor when needed. After Zimbabwe the family moved to Vietnam for two years because Ola got a position at the Embassy of Sweden in Hanoi. This was very exciting for Lovisa as she had always wanted to live in Asia.

Wanted to become a psychologist

As a young girl Lovisa always did her night prayers before going to bed and grew up with the notion that God loved her, as this was something she had been told by her grandparents all through her upbringing. But during confirmation something happened and she didn’t mature in her faith. Instead she started putting her faith into science. Nobody could walk on water, she thought. Finally she ended up dismissing the existence of God, surrendering completely to science. But she was still drawn to the more spiritual side of life and began studying religion at the university after graduating from high school. Still, becoming a priest was not at all something she was considering at this point. Instead she wanted to become a psychologist. As time went on her lack of faith became a steadily growing problem for her. She didn’t understand why she wasn’t capable of believing in God. Most of her fellow students believed in God, so why couldn’t she? During this time she found consolation in her

LOVISA MÖLLER friendship with a girl called Maria, who struggled with the same problems as herself. Then one day they were sitting separately in church listening to a sermon that a priest was giving for the students, when something happened. “When it was time for mass I suddenly realized that I was walking up to the altar for the first time since confirmation. It was really moving and when I turned around I saw Maria standing there with tears in her eyes as well. Then everything changed. I realized that God is not something you can figure out by science it’s about something totally different,” Lovisa says. Shortly thereafter, she decided to study theology and to become a priest - a decision that changed her life completely and which has now led her to the Church of Sweden in Bangkok with her husband Ola, her 17-year old

daughter Elida and 18-year old son Anton. And she doesn’t regret for one second that she made the decision to go to Thailand. She feels very strongly that this is the place she is supposed to be.

Closing down the church building

Lovisa’s first months as the new Swedish priest was a challenging task. From the very beginning she was faced with sensitive issues concerning the economy of the church. Problems she had talked about with the previous priest Lennarth Hamark upon his resignation, since discussions about closing down the church had been going on for about five years at this time. In short the problem is that the Swedish churches abroad have to carry their own costs when it comes

to buildings and activities. As it is now, money from donations and funding activities like Christmas bazaars and such only carries 40% of the costs which goes in to keeping the Church Center on Sukhumvit Soi 33 in Bangkok. Another problem is that the priest becomes tied up in management instead of reaching out to people. “People need more time from me and the church building needs more money, it doesn’t go together well.” she adds. Instead the church wants to develop its activities in Thailand as a whole and to be of service to more people than it is now. One of the things Lovisa is planning on doing after leaving the building on Soi 33 is going to Khao San Road at least once a week. On Khao San they find many often very young and vulnerable Nordic travellers and she would like them to know that the church is there for them. Besides the fact that the church needs more money, the church is also short on volunteers and visitors. Closing down the Church Center as one of her first major tasks as priest hasn’t been a dream scenario at all. Like the Scandinavians who frequently visit the church Lovisa is very sad to have to close it down. “I love this place, the quietness, the trees the birds and it is wonderful to see how people relax when they come here,” she says. The Church of Sweden in Bangkok has ended its contract on the premises of Soi 33 by the end of January 2010. At this moment the prayers are that another Nordic organisation will take over the contract and keep the premises available to the Nordic community. If so, the church will be happy to rent the building for its weekly activities. Lovisa wants to remind everyone that the church isn’t closing down. The church will still have children hours, services and confirmation classes just at another location. She also emphasizes that the church of Sweden isn’t cutting down on anything, on the contrary. In the south of Thailand the Church of Sweden in Thailand has expanded its activities and now both a priest and an assistant are stationed in Phuket.

T

hailand is one country in the world where traffic has become a serious threat against the lives and security of the people. Every hour two people die in traffic accidents, about 20,000 every year, and hundred thousand get injured. About 40% of the accidents happen at night and many of them would not have happened if the pedestrians had carried reflectors. Many of the victims are children. “It is almost impossible to describe the traffic situation in Thailand in words,” Kurt Blomqvist says. “There are traffic rules, but it seems that nobody follows them. An unbelievable number of cars on the streets plus thousands of motorbikes swarming like bees. And in this terrible chaos, pedestrians are walking around without reflectors.” Kurt Blomqvist, a pensioner Swedish journalist who, in the 1990”s worked as an aid consultant in the former republics of the Soviet Union, now living in Thailand, and some other Swedes started a year ago a project aiming to give free reflectors (TAAFAI) to Thai schoolchildren. In June last year 940 students in a school in Buriram region got free reflectors to protect themselves in the traffic and was as such the first school in Thailand, where the children carry reflectors in the traffic. The project was very successful and thanks to Swedish tourists, Swedes living in Thailand and some Norwegians an additional 20 000 Thai schoolchildren will this year will get free reflectors to protect themselves in the traffic. “The expectation would be that some international aid organizations would show interest in a project which deals with such a serious matter as saving lives. But neither International Save the Children nor the Swedish SIDA were interested. Fortunately, however, there are private persons who understand this better,” Kurt Blomqvist says.

No bicycles in Thailand have light. Reflectors will help people to survive in the traffic.

Get Reflectors

Pictures from ‘My traffic safety book”. “Save the Children in the Traffic” is a project started by some Swedes and Norwegians living in Thailand. It begun with reflectors to the schoolchildren in 20 schools but now the project has become an educational- and research project. That means that traffic safety for the first time has become a subject in some schools in Thailand.

The project has during this year changed profile and has now become an educational – and research project. All 20 000 schoolchildren who already have got TAAFAI will also get a small book called “My traffic safety book” with easy understandable pictures that put the focus on traffic situations when many accidents happen. At the same time the teachers get a “Recommendation how to give traffic lessons” in the school and an evaluation form to fill. That means that traffic safety for the first time has become a subject in some schools in Thailand.

The final goal is that reflectors in a couple of years shall be available for all people in Thailand to buy for a small sum of money at e.g. pharmacies, health centers, hospitals and other appropriate places.” “But we have still a long way to go before we reach the goal.. And we still hope that some aid organization, leading companies or understanding private persons will help us in this very important mission,”” Kurt Blomqvist says.
