Foreword

Welcome to the

Thai-Sweden Review Message by Kenneth Radencrantz President Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce

Dear Members, As you probably know, twelve Gripen fighter planes have been sold to Thailand. As a consequence of this purchase Thailand and Sweden have agreed to form a “Thai-Swedish Industrial Cooperation Working Group”. I am a member of the Thai Group, though I am a Swedish citizen! It is, indeed a pleasure and an honor to be a part of the Thai Group, which consists of representatives from Ministries of Industry, Energy, Commerce, Foreign Affairs, Tourism and Sport but also representatives from BOI, Thai Aviation Industry and, of course, Royal Thai Air Force. The Group is chaired by Air Marshal Permkiat Lavanamal, Deputy Chief of Staff, RTAF. During two days in early May we met with our Swedish counterparts at Rosenbad, Prime Minister’s Office, in Stockholm. It was very cold, even snowing, in Stockholm but we had some warm, friendly and fruitful discussions, which may materialize into projects in the future. We talked about Renewable Energy and New Technologies, Aircraft Maintenance, Food Safety and Urban Planning. We also paid a visit to Hammarby Sjöstad, an example of future urban planning. I am quite sure that these talks will lead to future business for Swedish companies. Apart from the talks, I pushed for extended leasehold and simplified long-stay visa for Swedish property owners! As the summer now is approaching, I wish all our members to have a pleasant time in Thailand, Sweden or elsewhere. Hopefully all of you can get a break and charge your batteries for the challenges we have ahead of us. I am looking forward to see you all again soon and continue to work together in the Thai Swedish Chamber of Commerce.

TSCC - Thai Swedish Chamber of Commerce

The New Captain Peter Björk is the new Executive Director at the Thai Swedish Chamber of Commerce. He has a long track record in Change Management and since the board found the need for change, Peter’s qualifications were embraced by the Chamber.

P

eter has lived in Thailand for twelve years now. He graduated in Change Management and with handson experience from his own consultancy business, everything seems to be in place for a new beginning at Swecham. ”I was in the army for eight years in Sweden. They were the best years of my life. I learned to deal with any person or any situation. That I brought with me all the way. If there is a disappointed member or a leadership problem I am not afraid to address this matter. Problems are to be solved, not to be hidden,” says Peter Björk. The new Director is quite satisfied with the fundamentals in the Chamber, which he has known from the other side of the table for more than seven years now.

”We need to think about value for our members. We are a member organisation, the board or the office here must never be parted from the members. Are the members willing to pay for what we offer? Things are changing and we need to be in touch with the wish of our members,” Peter Björk says.

Identifying new members

The Chamber is identifying new groups to recruit new members. One group is the Swedish home owners, which is a group of a considerable size, maybe around 20.000, according to Björk. Another group is the Young Professionals consisting of entrepreneurs and students. Thai professionals with an interest in Sweden are also in focus.

By Steen Poulin Nielsen

Swedish 2nd home owners in Thailand could be a new member category.

www.swecham.com

The New Captain

Young professionals could also be a new member category. ”We want to expand the membership base. We are not a social club as such. There should be a certain amount of commerce, but house owners can also have an interest in finance and law,” the Director says. The Chamber is working together with the rest of the Nordic Chambers on different subjects. One of them is the Nordic Young Professionals networking. But the new Director would like to do more together with the Nordic Chambers. “We have together with the other Nordic Chambers started the Nordic Young Professionals. So far it is just networking, but we need to do more to find them, talk to them and to identify their needs.” ”We are going to launch a membership campaign this year. We already allocated money for the campaign but have not decided the details,” Björk says.

Troubled Economy

The Chamber has been losing money two years in a row now.

10

www.swecham.com

”Last year we lost a lot of money, but now we have reduced the costs and our budget for this year leaves the Chamber with a little plus. I have a contract with the Chamber which allows me to take care of my business too. It means lower cost for the Chamber so it is a win-win situation,” Peter says. The Chamber still has money in the bank and if we can keep the new budget, the Chamber will have stopped the bleeding. Top priority will define the offers to the members.

Issues to address

”All organizations have internal political issues which cannot be eliminated because any organisation consists of individuals with different agendas. But we need to keep politics on a manageable level. One of the important ways to do so is to be very transparent and communicative. If people cannot see what is going on, rumours will occur,” Peter says.

”We need to think about value for our members. We are a member organisation, the board or the office here must never be parted from the members. Are the members willing to pay for what we offer?“

When the Royal Thai Air Force signed the agreement for its new Gripen multirole fighter aircraft in 2008, they signed up for something far more than just a replacement for the RTAF’s outgoing F-5 aircraft. They signed for a complete air defence package. By Steen Poulin Nielsen Photos by Soffi Chanchira Larsen

T

he first batch of the total 12 Gripen 39 C/D fighters arrived Tuesday February 22 in Thailand after leaving Linköping February 18. The flight had technical stops in six countries on the way. When the planes arrived Thailand they flew to be stationed at the Wing 7 air force base in Surat Thani. The second batch of Gripen fighters and other defence equipment is scheduled to arrive 2012 and 2013. A Saab 340 Airborne Early Warning aircraft and a Saab 340 transport aircraft, which the air force bought together with the jets, are also based at the Wing 7 air force base. Together with an integrated command & control system and a tactical information data-link solution, the Thai-Swedish deal is a complete defence system. The Gripen aircraft will replace the ageing F-5 jets. The F-5 aircraft will be completely phased out by the end of this year. The whole Thai press corps was

invited and was in military style freighted to Surat Thani, by a Hercules aircraft, along with VIP’s from the Air Force. The ceremony was opened by Air Chief Marshal Itthaporn Subhawong’s arrival on the runway at Wing 7 Tuesday afternoon. The Air Chief Marshal flew himself a 30 year old F-5 fighter from the air force base in Ubon Ratchathani to preside over the welcoming ceremony in Surat Thani. ACM Itthaporn Subhawong is convinced the jet fighters would bring modern and significant changes to the air force, according to Bangkok Post . With the new fighters, the air force would be transformed to a networkoriented system, he said. ‘’The Gripen is like a new type of computer with all the modern stuff. Most importantly, the supplier has agreed to transfer all the technology to us,’’ ACM Itthaporn said to Bangkok Post, adding that software for the fighters could be constantly updated, which was another benefit.

TSCC - Thai Swedish Chamber of Commerce

The Gripen was developed in the 1980’s by SAAB and in 1987 the first machine was in the air. Gripen 39 C/D is equipped with a Volvo Flygmotor RM12 engine. The weaponry includes a 27mm. Mauser BK27 gun, air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles and laser guided bombs. While RTAF is waiting for the next six planes coming, they will be upgrading their skills and are trained by the Swedish fighter pilots and other support staff who have moved to Thailand for the next two years. The Thai jet fighter pilots have already been in Sweden for nine months to be trained, but RTAF must add additional two years more to be fully trained to manage the Gripen 39 C/D.

A Heart for Hockey Born in Thailand and growing in Sweden, Likit NeimwanAnderson is now back in Thailand as the trainer/coach for the National Ice Hockey Team. He is also setting up his own business distributing Reebok Hockey equipment, and a Hockey magazine is among his new ideas to expand this sport in Asia. By Steen Poulin Nielsen

L

ikit Neimwan-Andersson was born in Thailand. His family moved and resided in Sweden when he was six years old. By the time he was seven and got introduced to the sport of Ice Hockey, he instantly loved the sport and proved to be talented at it. Fast forward, 32 years later, Likit has been playing as a professional in both Europe and the North American regions for more than twelve years. Last year, he decided to move back to his hometown, Bangkok. He was asked by the Ice Hockey Association of Thailand (IHAT) to be the Player/Coach for the National Team of Thailand, and to help assist in the development of Ice Hokey in Thailand. ”I became very happy, excited and also a bit surprised to see my own countrymen playing really good Ice Hockey,” Likit says.

In business

Likit is turning 38 years old and knows that his career as a professional player will not last forever. His passion for the sport is still burning as he expands his involvement in ice hockey. ”About a year ago, I sent a letter to Reebok Hockey that I was interested to promote the brand in Asia. They liked my ideas and appointed me as the distributor for Reebok Hockey in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and Hong Kong,” Likit says. According to Likit the potential market in SE Asia for hockey equipment is difficult to estimate. But he sees a great potential as the market is definitely growing. ”This year, there are two more new ice rinks coming up in Bangkok making it seven in total. It is growing fast,” Anderson says and continues:

”Skating and ice hockey are growing. Reebok Hockey also provides for figure skating, roller skating, and roller hockey. But now I am focusing on ice hockey to help expand the sport.”

Change in the business plan

”Initially I started with a plan just to work alone on this project but now I am looking for investors interested in helping me promote ice hockey all over Asia and not just the countries where I am distributing,” he says. The marketing platform right now is the social media but soon various hockey magazines will be added. Anderson is planning to reach out to the retailers carrying sports equipment but will address the hockey teams as well. Direct selling is also being considered. ”The investors should go for the whole package, both to market the hockey products as a business and to help develop the sport by setting up hockey schools.” “I create and arrange hockey schools in Bangkok but will expand the service to other Asian countries. The Philippines just saw its first hockey league, the Asian Pacific Hockey League, the sport is growing all over the region”, says Likit - who was named “Play Hockey Ambassador for the Leauge”.

Future plans for the National Team Andersson is confident about that Thailand has a bright future in Asian ice hockey. The team got a Silver at the 2011 Asian Winter Games and a new group of talents are knocking the door at the National Team. ”My goal for the team is to qualify to the World Championship in the C-group. No other tropical country has ever qualified for this”, Likit says.

A Heart for Hockey

Project making

Anderson tells that although the sport is growing and is doing fine in SE Asia, there is a lot of work to do to get the potential sponsors awareness. It is not easy to find sponsors for ice hockey in Thailand. The sport is not well known and it seems that many investors are looking for more popular sports in Thailand, Anderson says. In the long run he is sure that the sponsors will see the potential in ice hockey. Likit thinks that it might take some time but is sure it will happen. He is creating a new Ice Hockey League in Thailand called Thai Premier Hockey League (TPHL) which will to begin have only Thai hockey players. This league will start with four teams located in Bangkok, and all teams will be divided in A-national team lines, and Junior-national team lines. There will be a third line of development players who will compete for a National team spot. This new league will create a competitive new ice hockey level in Thailand. He hopes the sponsors will see the great value to support one of the most exiting sports in the world to grow in an exotic country like Thailand.

Maxxi Online Building Materials

Maxxi Online Building Materials

Maxxi, Thailand’s first online hardware store, was established by Eric Johansson in Hua Hin. He wants to be the first choice for buyers of building materials in Thailand. By Steen Poulin Nielsen

20

www.swecham.com

TSCC - Thai Swedish Chamber of Commerce

E

ric Johansson was a carpenter and concrete specialist when he arrived in Thailand 19 years ago. He had been working in Australia and was on his way back home, but decided to stay. “I could see so many opportunities here that I just had to stay,” Eric Johansson says. “I started renovating people’s homes while they were in Scandinavia. When they came back, everything was shining, and the business grew quickly.” Today, 19 years later, Eric has about 300 employees in total.

Difficult to source products

Moving into selling hardware and construction materials was triggered by the great difficulties he sometimes had finding basic material for his own business. “When we did find the products, we often bought more than we needed and sold them to other construction companies – suddenly we were a small scale building material reseller,” says Eric. The business idea shaped up, when he found Björn Nylén three years ago who already had experience doing

business in Thailand. Nylén joined Maxxi as the General Manager. A third partner in the team, Niclas Torsell, has lived in Thailand for 18 years and speaks Thai. He is Account Executive in charge of key suppliers of the business. Going for the online business meant a lot of website development work, which was outsourced to India and Pakistan. With the website online, Johansson, Nylén and Torsell have been meeting some of the big guys in the industry and telling them about how they can be part of what they want to do over the next two years.

Partnership under the umbrella

Maxxi is to be regarded as an umbrella where different suppliers of building material can be a partner. Maxxi will sort out the deal and set up a contract with each supplier. One of the major points is a price guarantee. Maxxi has to have the lowest prices on the market. The first huge project for Maxxi was one with several hundreds of houses. Maxxi is selling materials and other companies are doing the work. “It is much easier to sell the cement

and make a few baht per bag than to make sure that the cement is being put on the wall,” says Eric Johansson. Maxxi was an immediate success. “The first two months we sold more than expected, because our prices are so low. A customer can save a double digit percentage on a septic tank buying from us. Price is very important,” he says. Maxxi wants to be a partner instead of a supplier. According to Björn Nylén it is not uncommon in Thailand that the builder will make as much money on a short term basis by advising the owner than he will make on the construction. If for example you are going to build your own house and do not know how big your septic tank should be, you will ask the builder. Often he will sell you the most expensive one, much bigger than needed. You expect him to be the expert and to give you advice, but he is only looking to take as much money as possible from you.

Long term business

Maxxi wants to take care of the customer, give the best advises and look for continued business. They want long term business relations with both suppliers and customers.

www.swecham.com

21

Maxxi Online Building Materials

Another important factor in Thailand is commission. “It is not uncommon that staff make money when dealing on behalf of the company. 99% of the purchasing staff in Thailand ask for commission. This practice means that products are getting too expensive. We cut out all kinds of commission,” Johansson says. Maxxi can do the full service for any builder in Thailand. Their architects can do the drawings, the planning, the workshop, the kitchen and the windows, and the construction company can build the house. The builder can partner up with Maxxi and have full service and he will not have to spend time talking to many people or taking care of numerous invoices. “If you look into the market today the majority of managers in the building industry are aged 50+. They were running successful businesses before the Internet was widely available here and were not aware of the importance of online information. But the new generation of business people know and appreciate what we are doing,” says Johansson. “The market is hungry for information. Today it is very hard even to get a copy of a brochure.” “Here at Maxxi we know more about the product than many of the staff at the suppliers. If you go into HomePro you will find that knowledge of product is rarely available,” says Johansson.

22

www.swecham.com

Maxxi Team

The company has already teamed up with 56 suppliers. They represent the major brands in the business and the buyers knows them well. “If you go to their websites to buy products, you will find that it is almost impossible. We at Maxxi want to be visible on all our partners websites as the online sales channel for their products so customers can start the buying process right there. We want to be at the top of the page,” says Björn Nylén. The two Swedes have no doubt that Maxxi will turn into a big and successful business. They intend to move fast and expand the number of partners, and they are sure that they have both the capacity and the knowledge to grow the business as well as add value to the market.

BuildTech´11

At the BuildTech´11 Building Technology Exposition in May, the main event in ASEAN of its kind, Maxxi had a 225 sqm booth where they had invited their partners to join them. Each supplier were given a 5 sqm space to show their products. At the centre of the booth were two Maxxi staff sitting at the computers showing the audience how easily they can order from the website. “We now have 10.000 business cards in our system and will be in contact with them,” Eric says.

Own two resorts

The challenge to find products in the right quality at the right time and price did not move Eric Johansson into the online business right away. At first he established a workshop doing wall panels, doors, windows, wardrobes, kitchens and even furniture. With about 300 staff he felt the need to capitalize days without work for all of them. “We have two resorts, Pineapple Resort and Garden Hill´s Resort. When you have 300 staff you do not always have work for all of them, sometimes you only got work for 260 people and instead of letting 40 people do nothing we found it a good idea to build these resorts,” he says.

The SoSo Brothers

The SoSo

Brothers

Two young Swedes studying Marketing Major at Bangkok University have set up a clothing business in Bangkok. By Steen Poulin Nielsen Photos by Björn Sidfeldt

L

ast September Johan Blom, 27 and Jannis Hoff, 23 decided to go from talk to action and put their many thoughts on paper. Both of them are from Stockholm and have shared a passion for fashion since childhood. The company called SoSo was born. SoSo is an urban-Thai expression meaning a down-to-earth lifestyle, a nonflashy dress code and a modest attitude to life. In opposition to the Hi-So way of living with focus on luxury and money spending. SoSo´s message is more like: ”just be yourself”. ”You need to take a break from the stress of the modern world from time to time,” Johan says. The interview for this article takes place in a meeting room at the Bangkok University. The Swedes tell that the university is very supportive in regards to coaching and marketing. The Swedes are a good reference for the university as they are the proof of the pudding; that you can actually turn your knowledge into a prospective business. Blom and Hoff verbalized the SoSo company through last September and they realized that it will be an ongoing process. When finalizing the initial business plan they decided to get a SoSo product on the market.

But soon they realized, that Thailand is a very interesting market. ”Imported products are highly sought after here. It seems to be less important if the products are coming from Germany or Indonesia. As long as they are imported,” Jannis says. SoSo products are not imported though. Every single product has been manufactured in Thailand and the entrepreneurs are following the product all the way from design to the end-user. ”We worked with a number of factories but now we found just the right one,” Jannis says. Their main concern is quality control. Any mistake regarding sizing, sewing, colour and fabric can damage the reputation of the brand, a reputation that they are working so hard to earn. According to the entrepreneurs, Thai companies have to step up when it comes to quality control if they wish to beat the competition from other countries in the region. But apart from this, the Swedes really like to do business with Thai partners. ”It seems that business here is based on trust and everyone is looking for long term business. We have never been treated badly and whenever a problem occurred it was solved without discussion of costs,” Johan says.

The first SoSo product

Next step for SoSo

The first product from SoSo was a t-shirt. The primary market was initially Sweden and SoSo has a business partner to take care of the marketing and distribution in Sweden of their products.

After the launch of the t-shirt, which sold out much faster than expected, SoSo offered jeans to the market. The streetwear look is significant, it has a very relaxed fit and with costumized

SoSo will always have its base in this country. We will build the brand on Thai values and add some patterns and colours from here as well. tearing, the SoSo jeans yells ”street”. New products for the Swedish fall season are in the pipeline, but the entrepreneurs are reluctant to say more about it as the competition in the clothing business is severe. Social medias like Facebook and Twitter, and fashion blogs are important marketing instruments. ”If the right blogger gives your product a thumbs-up, you can expect it to sell out with rocket speed. The

With Sune, we saw it more as a challenge to our customers. We thought that not everyone would understand what it takes to feel the SoSo feeling, so we made a dare with this T-shirt. It’s a challenging and very colorful picture, and it will definitely show when you decide to “Be SoSo”.

power of the bloggers should not be underestimated,” Jannis says.

On the long run

The Swedes are looking to stay in control of SoSo which is why no foreign money is wanted. The students are paying from their own pocket and take time to think, create and take care of the product quality. They want to graduate from Bangkok University and are looking at another two years of studies. Both of them love to live, study and work in

Thailand. ”SoSo will always have its base in this country. We will build the brand on Thai values and add some patterns and colours from here as well. In Sweden, SoSo is a Swedish brand with a Thai touch while here in Thailand, the market is recognizing us as a Scandinavian brand with a familiar touch and clear values.”, Johan says. The entrepreneurs want SoSo to grow into a big company with its own retail stores.

tarting in 2002, SENSA in Bangkok is now in the last year of its most recent mandate period – which will not be renewed. But all the stakeholders involved, especially those within SENSA and at Sida (Swedish International Development Agency) in Sweden, want to see a continuation of its existence, but in a slightly different, more free-standing format. “We are looking at how SENSA could become its own project and work with more or less the same mandate,” explains Karin Isaksson, an anthropologist and sociologist currently in charge of this knowledge-based entity within Sida. SENSA promotes regional cooperation for an environmentally sustainable development in Southeast Asia by strengthening cooperation between the region and Sweden, and serving as a platform for regional environmental dialogue on such matters as climate change. “From SENSA we do not enter into projects with any individual country; when we find an area where the regional cooperation has an added value we try to support that,” explains Karin Isaksson. SENSA is able to recruit consultants, organize conferences and workshops and function as a think-tank. Milestone achievements of SENSA so far is that it was instrumental in setting up the Adaptation Knowledge

Platform to strengthen adaptive capacity and facilitate climate change adaptation in Asia. It has also held no less than seven Annual Retreats, the last one in Chiang Mai in 2010 which was themed: ‘Is being regional the answer to tackle the environment in Asia?’. Finally, it functions as a vehicle for SIDA to review its developing support in Asia, providing strategic advice and technical support to its offices in the region and the head office. “All these tasks together, I find is a very interesting scope of work. I meet many fascinating people, all the way from grassroots level up to decisionmakers, and those within the academic world; people with a lot of knowledge

and the ability to influence policies that have implications for development here.” The wide scope was there from the start, but has changed over time influenced by the general development. “This concerns both sustainable use of natural resources, but also builds capacity within the countries we collaborate with to deal with these issues. We can catalyze something that is needed for a period but the countries must then deal with this on their own; partly knowledge-based, but also financially.” Sustainable development still has second priority to economic growth in the world, but there are principles that Sweden must work at.

There is not really any time for afterthought, and the politicians and the industry leaders leading the development are hunted by a growing middle class, – as there are still many poor people – who have larger needs. So, it’s a struggle for time actually.” “There are very large and complicated challenges, one must admit. But that also makes things very interesting,” Karin says in an optimistic tone. In hindsight, the results of the climate negotiations on a global level have been bleak, so it is perhaps better to focus on grassroots initiatives in combination with regional efforts.

With Electrolux Dynamica, Electrolux is urging consumers to change their cleaning behavior by using a vacuum cleaner instead of a broom with hopes that an affordable new innovation will replace the usage of brooms. By Steen Poulin Nielsen

S

utti Manokitjarunman is the General Manager of Electrolux Thailand, a position he was appointed two years ago. “I am Thai and got my education all the way from primary school to Masters degree in Thailand. Fortunately I got my Bachelors degree with Magna cum Laude honors from Assumptions University, and Masters degree from Chulalongkorn University in a joint program of the Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management with the University of Pennsylania’s Wharton School”, Manokitjarunman says. Manokitjarunman worked some years in the US managing 12 countries in Asia Pacific and according to him that is exactly what Electrolux is looking for; a professional with a global perspective who can manage the market opportunities in the context of global business with local relevance, in this case Thailand. “We have over a hundred people working at our office in Bangkok while at our factory in Rayong we have over six hundred people. We are hiring more people at our factory this year. At the office we try to enhance productivity”, Manokitjarunman says.

Thai Swedish work culture fits

“The way I see it, Swedish and Thai cultures are very similar, especially the way we respect people, honour the differences and are customer oriented. Everything we do is to serve the best for the customers by going that extra

mile. Both working cultures are a bit non-confrontational, not so direct. In that sense we are very close. Maybe that is why Thailand is so popular for Swedish tourists”, Sutti Manokitjarunman says. “There are a lot of European residents here in Thailand and they are very loyal to our brand,” he adds. “The core values at Electrolux are expressed through the slogan: ´Thinking of You´,” Manokitjarunman explains and adds: “We always think about how we can enhance the lives of our consumers and search for ways to make their lives easier and more enjoyable. That’s the way we find new opportunities to create new products and services”. The Managing Director describes Electrolux as a global brand with European heritage and tells that the brand is one of the best known European brands in Thailand. It is a top-of-mind brand when consumers are asked in quick polls. Electrolux has been a Thai marketeer for 30 years and is known for high quality and durable products with high standard services. Convenience is a key word at Electrolux, both when designing the product and when offering the products to the market. We introduce a function in our washing machines called “Time Manager”. Basically the busy modern lifestyle allows consumers less time in their homes to take care of cleaning. Therefore time management is essential. If you just have a little laundry you can wash in only 30 minutes with our “Time Manager” function, Sutti Manokitjarunman says.

The core values at Electrolux are expressed through the slogan: ´Thinking of You´

Home Inspirations Centre

The Electrolux Home Inspirations Centre is created to provide a new dimension to the market. Sutti Manokitjarunman tells that sometimes consumers do not know how to buy appliances to fit their furniture and vice versa. When building a new home, appliances are not always part of the planning. At Home Inspirations, consumers can see how modern home appliances can be an integrated part of the home design, either as built-in or stand alone, big or small. Electrolux wants to provide convenience for the consumers with all the latest innovations and also free consultancy on furniture, kitchen and design from the experienced staff at the centre. Electrolux Thailand also offers a 24 hours customer call service which works the best when it comes to after sales services, and spare parts too. It is therefore a complete home appliance solution in one place.

Tailored Products

Electrolux is a global company with a long history, but with willingness and the ability to adjust to local market conditions and focus on what is relevant for the local market by interacting with local consumers to find ways to develop products and services. “Our products are developed based on local consumer insights. Recently we launched a product called “Keyhole Hob” which basically is the combination of Western technology and Asian cooking lifestyle. It combines the western and Thai kitchen in one product,” Manokitjarunman says. The Electrolux Keyhole Hob recently won a gold medal award from the Singapore

34

www.swecham.com

Design Awards 2010. “We go to the consumer homes, interview them and observe the way they manage the household, and then find ways to ease their daily lives,” he says. Electrolux Dynamica is another products of ours developed from local market knowledge. In Thailand the broom is used much more in homes than vacuum cleaners but usage of a broom is not that hygienic because of the dust according to Manokitjarunman. “The Dynamica is a vacuum cleaner designed as close as possible to a broom. It is sleek, very lightweight – it can be used on any surface and the price is affordable. The basic model is 2,990 Baht. That is a good example how we learn about our Asian consumers and use the knowledge when we create new products”, he says.

The marketing platform

According to the General Manager the heritage of Electrolux in Thailand is very strong and many of the Thai consumers remember the brand from their childhood and recognize Electrolux as a high quality brand. Electrolux Thailand do both advertising and PR. They have billboards close to the main roads introducing new products, printed ads and TV sponsorship. “We demonstrate how to use our products. In some of the outlets of our major retailers, we have our own promoters. They are knowledgeable and can show how products work and help consumers make their lives a little easier and more enjoyable. It is quite important when we talk about electrical appliances. We need to tell consumers

how our products can add value”, Manokitjarunman explains. “You can say that Electrolux is a premium brand. Compared to some other Asian brands we cannot compete on price, but we compete on quality and durability”, he says.

Thailand in an Electrolux perspective

For Electrolux the core product in Asia is washing machine. The company has a factory in Rayong which is becoming a global export hub. The factory is not just serving Thailand but also Asia Pacific and Europe. We have more and more confidence in the Thai market, the people in the factory and the local talents. “The Thai market is doing very well despite some difficult times during the riots last year, but we experienced strong growth and even exceeded the budget expectations. We did very well.”, Sutti Manokitjarunman says. Electrolux recently entered the market for air-conditioning as the only European brand so far. According to the General Manager, despite premium pricing, Electrolux is already doing well in this market. Last year, Thailand experienced the longest warm period in many years and everyone asked for air cons. “It is also about timing and seasonality. As a marketer, we always have to adapt to changes including the global warming phenomenon. Now we have launched the latest innovation of water heaters and with the unusually cool weather at the moment, we are selling them very well.,” Sutti Manokitjarunman concludes with a smile.

SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE

THE WORLD HAS CHANGED a bit since we started back in 1937. Over the years, we’ve helped nations increase their readiness in a world that constantly poses new challenges for corporations and civil security authorities alike. And we couldn’t have done it without change.

www.saabgroup.com

So we’ve changed technology. And it’s changed us. There’s really just one thing that remains the same. After more than 70 years, we are still challenging the laws of nature and pushing the boundaries of the possible. Some things never change.

From Little Lund to Big Town Bangkok

From

Little Lund

to

Big Town Bangkok Throughout his life, 32 year old Emanuel Nilsson has gone his own way – against the stream. He calls himself a fighter and, with the choices he has made in life, that appears to be exactly what he is. By Katrine Sigvardt

36

E

manuel Nilsson is a happy man. He has found true love and is pursuing a career that he is happy to work on and develop. Computer programming is his passion but he has far from had everything handed to him. In fact, in order to be where he is today, Emanuel chose the unconventional way.

Tricked his way to internet access

His interest in computers really kicked off when the internet was first introduced in the mid nineties. He wanted it so badly, but at the time, surfing the net was a costly affair and it was one he could not afford. However, where there is a will there is a way and Emanuel created his own way to get access to the internet he so desired and wanted to get his hands on: “In Sweden, we have these circles for people with certain interests. I created my own study circle and faked the members names and addresses. That way I got my hands on a brand new top of the line internet modem and payed internet service”, says the young

programmer with a cheeky smile. “I was already into it back then.” With an interest in what is behind the screen and figuring out how it works, the young Emanuel soon became an expert on the subject.

Army boy

The self taught skills he acquired when the world wide web first became all the rage really benefitted him when he did the mandatory military service in Sweden. For the first couple of weeks, Emanuel Nilsson did his time in the army as a military truck driver but when his technical interest and knowledge were discovered, he was transferred to the warfare simulation unit. There, he collected data and services the equipment needed for the other recruits to practice war. Although he does not look very soldier like, Emanuel actually enjoyed his time in the army, and when he was offered a more permanent job, he was very tempted to accept and stay. “Being in the army gave me the discipline I needed. But I didn’t want to be a military man forever, so in the end I

chose an academic education instead.” That decision led him to university where he completed a bachelor’s degree in Media Technology with emphasis on interactive systems. After finishing his education, Emanuel felt like he needed to explore the world. He was torn between America and Japan, but in the end he felt that Japan and the road less travelled was the more appealing choice and he set off to Asia.

A desire to travel

Emanuel Nilsson studied Japanese at a local university for six months. After that, he wanted more and even though everyone said it could not be done, together with a friend he managed to set up his own company, ELPHAME – a web shop that sells Scandinavian designed baby clothes in Japan. However, Emanuel is well aware that maybe Japan is not the best market for baby accessories at the moment, seeing how there is almost a lack of babies in the country. “We are just waiting for the baby boom,” he says and adds with a chuckle

that he and his partner are more than ready for that to happen. What he was not prepared for, though, was what would happen when he met Thai born Yui who came to Japan to meet up with friends. As luck (or bad luck) would have it, her friends were unavailable and so she met up with Emanuel who showed her around Tokyo. “It was love at first sight,” Emanuel says as he remembers his first encounter with the Thai Environmental Specialist Engineer and he knew it was just meant to be. After that, he quickly made the decision to leave Japan and move to Thailand to be with her there.

I am a fighter. Here, I fight everyday but I like it. I only live once. I don’t live for tomorrow

Life in Thailand

Emanuel has never regretted his move to Thailand, although he sometimes feels that life in Bangkok can be quite difficult. “Sometimes I miss hearing and speaking Swedish,” he says but adds that when he does return to Sweden for vacation it does not feel the same anymore. It has changed somehow and he feels that he has grown apart from

www.swecham.com

37

From Little Lund to Big Town Bangkok

the friends he has there. He does not always mind that, though, and sees it as a part of growing up. According to Emanuel Nilsson, Thailand is now home to him and there is no better feeling than when he comes home after a long day at work and sees the lights in the condo pool. That is when he feels at home the most. Emanuel is however well aware that IKEA is coming to Thailand and that is something he is very excited about: “Yes, I am going to go there every week! I miss the Swedish food and you can get it there,” he says and adds that he is especially excited about the princess cake he knows you can get there. At the moment, Emanuel is a Programmer at Backtobasics Design – a design company that makes websites and branding for established companies

38

www.swecham.com

like facebars www.facebars.com) and Buddhaview Diving (www.buddhaviewdiving.com) as well as international and new company start-ups like Serendipity Resort in Koh Lipe (serendipityresortkohlipe.com)”. He is very happy with his job and imagines that despite the challenges of adapting to the culture and gaining a certain amount of patience with a system that is not as efficient as the Swedish one, Emanuel Nilsson will stay in Thailand for a long time. “Our plan is to buy a house and have a kid,” he says and emphasizes that it is a kid – to begin with anyway – and whether the little family will stay in Thailand or move elsewhere will depend entirely on where they have the best means of supporting the family. Going back to Sweden is far from an obvious

choice but it is not an impossibility either. In fact, if he could combine Sweden with the Asian cultures, Emanuel Nilsson believes that would be a great combination. The challenges the cultural differences impose, however, are something Emanuel appreciates. He feels that they add color to his life and make sure that it never gets boring and monotone. That is why he is so happy that he made the decision to go to Asia after finishing university rather than to the States where he feels that life would be easier but maybe a bit boring too. “I am a fighter. Here, I fight everyday but I like it. I only live once. I don’t live for tomorrow,” he says and adds that the daily struggle in Thailand makes life that much more interesting and to him, that is just the way it should be.

European ASEAN Business Centre

European ASEAN Business Centre

J

ohn Svengren, the former Executive Director of the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce, is actively engaged in his new job as Director of the new European ASEAN Business Centre (EABC) recently established in Bangkok, Thailand.

Facilitating market access

EABC is a physical centre aimed at facilitating market access for European business in Thailand to promote Thailand as a high potential trade and investment market for European businesses. The Centre is part of a wider strategy of the European Union to support the internationalisation of European SMEs and to enhance market access especially in emerging and fast growing markets like South East Asia.

German led consortium

In response to an EU Call for Proposals, bilateral European Chambers of Commerce based in Thailand have joined forces[1], together with EUROCHAMBRES representing all Chambers of Commerce in Europe and two sectoral organisations DigitalEurope and EURATEX. The German-Thai Chamber has taken the contractual leadership on behalf of this Consortium. Together, they will run EABC and look to establish a fruitful partnership with the relevant Thai business organisations,

40

www.swecham.com

Basic principles

This European Centre will be established on the basis of some fundamental principles. First: complementarity. EABC will develop activities and services which are not yet delivered by existing service providers such as National Chambers of Commerce, Trade Promotion Agencies. Instead, it will focus on those activities that have a clear European value added including IPR, FTA negotiations and likewise. Second: public private partnership. While the European Union is financially supporting the creation of EABC, the ownership of the Centre lies with the European business community - those already based in Thailand and those wishing to enter the market. Third: sustainability. EABC is more then implementing some actions which are co-financed by the European Union. The objective is to create an institution with permanent legal basis.

Voice for EU businesses

A first priority for EABC is to become the voice of European business in Thailand. All existing Members of existing bilateral Chambers will be invited to join EABC against a marginal fee. The Centre will establish a series of advocacy groups to identify those areas where market access and business cooperation can be improved. European companies will be invited to join such groups, depending on their specific interests.

Secondly, the Centre will develop services which facilitate economic cooperation between EU and Thai business such as seminars, flagship events, publications. This will be done in synergy with existing service providers, both in Thailand and in Europe.

The next steps

As a first step, the consortium has identified John Svengren as the Director for EABC. His role will be to run EABC on a daily basis and report to a Steering Committee which includes all Consortium Members. A team of five staff will be established while offices are being organized at the Empire Tower in Sathorn adjacent to the German-Thai Chamber. EABC will seek to obtain legal status under Thai law and a full public launch of EABC will be organized as soon as possible. Annual work plans will be developed by the team and endorsed by the Consortium and the EU Delegation working towards the objectives explained above. A full visual identity, including website and communication tools, will be developed.
