Foreword from Team Sweden Thailand

MESSAGE FROM SWEDISH AMBASSADOR TO THAILAND I am pleased to congratulate the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce on the publication of its new Member Directory book. The Embassy is looking forward to continuing a fruitful and close collaboration with the Chamber for years to come. Thailand’s economic recovery continued to gain momentum in 2017 and in the first half of 2018, despite a nationwide mourning last year, which was concluded by the Royal cremation ceremony on October 26. This special ceremony was also honored in the capital of Sweden, where thousands of people from many parts of the country attended the ‘Serafimerringning’ ceremony on the very same day (the bell ringing ceremony of the Royal Order of the Seraphim). This day demonstrated that the close ties between Thailand and Sweden are stretching far beyond trade, extending across our societies and peoples. 2018 is indeed a very special year for ThaiSwedish relations, as it marks the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation between our two nations. In the past 150 years, the ties between Thailand and Sweden have continually broadened and strengthened. Trade between our two nations is very important. Today, there are several major Swedish companies in Thailand with large investments – companies that are in the forefront of sustainability and innovation. The past few years have also seen a strong collaboration in the area of smart cities, where Swedish knowhow and technology matches very

well with Thailand’s 4.0 vision, and the needs for innovative solutions within smart mobility, energy and traffic safety. I believe in a continued good collaboration with Thailand in these areas. Governments, businesses and consumers worldwide have increasingly been challenged by the fact that our planet is deteriorating due to human activity. Government action is important – but in itself not enough in the efforts to mitigate climate change . We believe that the private sector needs to play an integral role in this struggle, and we hope that Swedish businesses through the application of modern technology and by embracing innovation and creativity, will help encourage sustainable change and sustainable economic development in Thailand. Looking ahead, Thailand’s economic outlook continue to appear promising, and we believe the economy will grow even stronger and see increasing interests from Swedish businesses, after the general election in 2019. The Embassy, together with Team Sweden Thailand – the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce and Business Sweden – is looking forward to continuing collaboration with, and supporting, the Swedish community, and to further promote business partnerships and exchange between Thailand and Sweden. Sincerely,

Staffan Herrström Ambassador of Sweden TSCC MEMBER DIRECTORY 2018

Foreword from Team Sweden Thailand

MESSAGE FROM TRADE COMMISSIONER OF SWEDEN TO THAILAND It is a great pleasure to announce the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce’s Member Directory 2018. Now half way through 2018, we have witnessed Thailand’s highest GDP growth in the past five years, and the growth is expected to continue throughout 2019. This translates to a certain optimism with the Swedish companies in Thailand – where projections and past growth has been around 10% since we started tracking progress in 2015. In 2018, more than a third of Swedish companies now expect over 20% revenue growth over the next three years. Today, around 70 Swedish companies are established in Thailand, representing a broad cross section of Swedish businesses that address the demands of Thailand’s growing economy. Innovative solutions that strengthen Thailand’s growing industrial sector and sustainable transport represent a market stronghold. Telecom, energy and consumer goods have been major contenders in Thailand since the first Swedish companies were established more than a century ago. Recent expansion of activities include B2B and digital services which support Thailand’s 4.0 agenda.

show commitment to the market with long term presence and investments, with tailored solutions based on Sweden’s globally renowned innovative edge, and with a strong commitment to sustainability and high ethical standards. It is our great pleasure to support the Swedish business community in Thailand, together with the other Team Sweden members – Embassy of Sweden and Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce. I would like to thank you all – the Swedish companies and Team Sweden for great collaboration towards our mutual aim of supporting Thailand’s growth journey, and in growing the Swedish footprint in Thailand. I’m looking forward to more fruitful collaborations to come.

Vivianne Gilmann Trade Commissioner of Sweden to Thailand

The Thai market has certainly experienced its ups and downs during the past decades, and it is not always an easy market to navigate, as can be said about most of the markets in the fast-growing South East Asia region. The Swedish companies who succeed in Thailand

Foreword from Team Sweden Thailand

MESSAGE FROM TSCC PRESIDENT

The year 2017 was undoubtedly a year of transition, both for the Chamber, with myself as new elected Chairman and a new full-time Executive Director, as well as for Thailand as a nation – culminating a yearlong mourning period for the beloved late King Bhumibol Adulyadej with a Royal Cremation Ceremony that will long be remembered. Moving towards Thailand 4.0 is high on the government’s agenda - with the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) and rail projects being the key to boost Thailand’s 4.0 ambitions. Swedish companies are in the forefront in many of EEC’s 10 target industries, such as next generation automotive, automation and robotics, smart electronics, aerospace, and med-tech. We strongly believe that Swedish smart and innovative solutions have the potential to play a significant role in enhancing Thailand’s 4.0 development. During 2017 the Chamber saw positive results in terms of membership, keeping a steady growth rate of our corporate member base and concluding the year with a positive financial result. We arranged a number of highly attended events, providing opportunities for both companies and individuals to grow and expand their network as well as knowledge on relevant subject areas, plus creating a sense of community for Swedish businesses and individuals in Thailand. We also initiated a closer cooperation with the other three Nordic

Chambers in Thailand – Denmark, Finland and Norway – which was officially launched through a successful New Year’s event in January this year, with over 200 guests joining the celebrations. Increasing our collaboration with relevant partners will continue to be a focus for this. In the spring of 2018, we were pleased to launch the first ever, Team Sweden Business Climate Survey Thailand, which was conducted in close collaboration with Business Sweden and the Embassy of Sweden. Through our cooperation and involvement in JFCCT, the Nordic Chambers, Team Sweden Thailand and EABC Committees, we will continue to advocate for better foreign business conditions in Thailand. Looking ahead, 2019 will without doubt also be an eventful year, not the least because we will be able to celebrate the 30-years anniversary of the Chamber. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all our members and corporate partners for staying engaged and for your commitment to the Chamber. Our work heavily relies on your efforts and the generosity of partners and sponsors. Thank you for your invaluable support!

THE THAI ECONOMY Resilient proven by impressive growth under difficult times Thailand is the second largest economy in ASEAN and the economy has historically shown impressive growth which has attracted international investors and entrants. Manufacturing is the largest sector with a contribution of 27% to the GDP. The automotive industry in particular is strong where almost 2 million vehicles are produced annually and employs more than 500 000 people, many international OEMs utilize Thailand as their production base. Throughout the last decades, Thailand’s economy has bumped into challenges including the Asian Financial crisis in 1990s, global financial crisis and political uncertainties. As a result of the military coup in 2014, both foreign direct investments and GDP dropped. However,

By Business Sweden - The Swedish Trade & Invest Council Thailand Office

the economy has historically proven to bounce back from different crisis and 2017 showed a rebound thanks to tourism and export. 2018 has continued on the same wave and the GDP growth forecast has been revised upwards to hit at least 4%, such growth numbers have not been seen for more than five years in Thailand.

Sweden and Thailand have a long history of trade relations Bilateral relations between Thailand and Sweden is dated long back, 150 years ago a first friendship treaty was established. In terms of export value from Sweden, Thailand is the second largest country in ASEAN after Singapore. As seen in the graph below, the export the last ten years has been volatile. In 2017 the value decreased by 17% from previous year to a value of 4.5 billion SEK. However, the

The export from Sweden to Thailand is dominated by goods aiming to serve the large manufacturing sector in Thailand. Machinery for transport equipment and power generation accounts for 76% of the value. The types of goods that Thailand import from Sweden has looked similar the past five years, more details are shown in the pie chart below.

Thailand’s large manufacturing sector gives opportunities for companies within industrial solutions that can provide competitive technological solutions. The country will face challenges to adopt to an ageing population and there will be opportunities within the area of healthcare as Thailand is highly dependent on import of medical devices and pharmaceuticals. Moreover, Thai government are increasing activities to drive a digital transformation to ensure a shift towards a value driven economy. challenges in the market. The main advantages of being in Thailand is to access the attractive customer base as well as its geographical strategic position. 80% of the respondents ranked the customer base as a main driver for their establishment in the market. The main challenges perceived in the market are related to price sensitivity and competition, indicating that Thailand is showing characteristics of a more mature market. Another challenge in Thailand, in particular among larger companies (>100 employees), is to find skilled labor, a challenge that was ranked low when a comparable study was made in 2015. Besides having an innovative or unique offering, the key success factors all relate to having a strong market knowledge and presence, as well as having tailored offerings and market strategies. The results from the survey show that 60% use a distributor, to different extent, in

their sales channels to access their customers. As a result of the economic trend in Thailand, the outlook to do business in the country is positive. 84% of he Swedish companies surveyed believe their revenue will increase the coming three years. 36% of them believe the growth will be high. Moreover, Swedish companies are committed to make a footprint in the market. Several companies will invest in marketing & sales (84%), skills development (76%), products / solution (44%), CSR (36%), R&D (36%) and manufacturing (20%) which confirms the positive outlook that the Swedish companies have. As a final word we are pleased to see such positive attitude among the Swedish companies in Thailand and hope the footprint in the market will increase, both from existing companies but also new Swedish companies planning to establish here.
