ART MUSEUM HOTEL MFA Interior and Architetcure Design
Project type: Location:
Hospitality design 1540 Broadway st.
The Art Museum Hotel is a boutique hotel designed to deliver a unique travel experience. The property is located at 1540 Broadway, in the center of downtown Oakland, California. The old two-story retail structure was demolished and developed for a new downtown boutique hotel. It has eight stories, plus a rooftop sky bar. In addition, the building has two basement level for parking. The hotel’s public space and back-of-house will be primarily located on the first and second floors. The project is strongly influenced and inspired by Oakland’s creative culture. Art is a part of Oakland’s soul. Immigrants and artists are constantly leading the way of innovation and creativity. From industrial arts to world-class museums, there’s a lot of creative expression here. My goal is to design a hotel which itself will interact with tourists, and a place that welcomes tourist to interact with each other.
4
The project reconciles multiple contrasts between the old and the new, and the elegant and the informal. Neutral colors are the keynote of this hotel, emphasizing the artworks exhibited there. The main material is wood, which contrasts with metal and marble. The project meets the sustainability, both through architectural elements and selection of materials. Most common areas of the hotel are located on the ground floor. These are divided into four spaces: an exhibition area, a lobby, a bar, and the restaurant. They flow into each other, creating a visual experience of alternation.
NEIGHBORHOOD The property is located in the downtown Oakland Historic District. City Hall and its plaza and a series of early 20th century skyscrapers are nearby along Broadway. The Oakland Historic District is the main financial district in Oakland. Also, it is the art and entertainment center of Oakland. The target clients are businessmen, artists, designers, and curators.

HISTORY & CULTURE OF OAKLAND Originally inhabited by the Costanoan Indians, the area was later settled by the Spanish people as the first white men in the area. In 1848, the gold rush transformed the Oakland area, causing more people to come to the area, which facilitated the area in becoming a city in 1854 Today, Oakland prospers in shipping due to its proximity to San Francisco and to take advantage of the ports. Art is a part of Oakland’s soul. Immigrants and artists are constantly leading the way of innovation and creativity. From industrial arts to world-class museums, there’s a lot of creative expression here. Downtown Oakland is a destination for food, shopping, arts and culture, and entertainment. It has the highest concentration of art galleries, and bestreviewed restaurants in Oakland. Every month, art galleries and art festivals draw a vibrant crowd of art enthusiasts and professionals alike.

SUSTAINABILITY CONCEPT & APPLICATION The project meets the sustainability goals, both through architectural elements and selection of materials. Materials and coatings with low VOC emissions were used to improve indoor air quality. The atrium and a patio on the seond floor provides the building with natural light. Wood flooring provides a surface that is is firm and stable for accessibility purposes. White oak has a relatively fast growth rate and is adaptable for a variety of uses. Nylon fibers are readily available, strong, and hold dyes well. Nylon is also very resilient and has a high abrasion resistance. In addition, it has low levels of flammability and helps create safe, healthy indoor environments. Marble is
strong and luxurious, and it is an environmentally friendly material.

at the same time. There will be a relationshipGREENERY between three floors. The first floor and the second floor will be the places to show and sellGREENERY the products of design company on the third floor. I want to introduce the concept of Experience Marketing into my design. The goal of Experience Marketing is to create an emotional bond between the consumer and the brand by immersing them in a fun and memorable experience. The interior design of the whole space in the building will reflect the brand and culture of the furniture design company. The products of company will also be utilized in the design process. Therefore, the consumers will be connected to the brands through sight, touch, sound, smell and even taste.

I want to develop it into a mixed-use building which has a café and retail on the first floor, a commercial showroom for a furniture design company on the second floor, and a furniture design company’s offices on the third floor. The office on the third floor will be a space where work and leisure coexist without borders. This will be a place that can inspire the people who work in it. The clients will be the furniture deign company and individual investors. The target café patrons will be the customers of the retail space and people working within the vicinity. There are other mixed-use buildings like this in the neighborhood. However, the overall vision for my project is to transform it into a place where design, experience and selling happen

Mr. and Mrs. Zhao bought a 3b2b apartment. It is total 120 square meters. Since their parents moved to live with them, they need two bedrooms and a guest room. They want their home have a reading area, so I divided living room into two space by a book shelve. The informal living room at the left of entrance can also be used as a reading area. The house has a balcony and good view. The large window permits light to enter the room. Different materials go well along with each other. While the black and white walls and the leather sofa give the room a touch of luxury, the wooden flooring creates a more easy-going atmosphere. The custom wall make whole space appears soft and refined.

Olive City Shopping Mall Professional Experience
Project type: Client: Location: Construction start date:
Commercial design Zhonglianchuang Real Estate Zhengzhou, China April 2014
Olive City is a shopping mall integrating recreation, shopping, entertainment and cuisine. The design is inspired by the Rubik’s Cube: the primary colors, the playfulness, the sense of complexity underlying something seemingly basic and easy to understand. The organization of Rubik’s Cube. The ultimate goal of Olive City is to promote an enjoyable, hassle-free shopping experience for the consumer.
This is my one of my commercial interior design project during the time as a design assistant for Lishi Design company. I am responsible to assist in the creation of preliminary plans and design concepts as well as analyzing design objectives following clients’ needs. I also assist interior designers with sample selections, hand sketches, drawings, schedules, and boards.
We design the common areas inviting and multifunctional, the infrastructure supportive of fastchanging technologies, and retail tenants more appealing to aspirational shoppers. We aim to use design to engrain the “wow!” and give consumers a reason to get out to the mall, instead of shopping online
This project let me realize that many components such as regulation get, practicality and beauty need to weave together to create a successful design.
37
A neutral is the dominant color for the interior. White marble is tactile and strong, imbued with both emotion and cultural relevance, which are used to elevate the feeling of luxury. We use irregular geometric grid, rectangular as the design element. The organization of material and color show the concept of Rubik’s Cube.

Shamen Village
PLANT TRAVAL BFA Environmental Art Design
Project type: Purpose:
Landscape Green system and lifestyle
With the development of urbanization, the world faces many environmental problems coming together with it. As urban areas continue to grow, there are fewer and fewer plants. People live in urban area are lack of intimate connection that they once had to the land and plants that they depend on. This project aims to raise awareness of this forgotten piece of Zhengzhou and to contribute to the longerterm social and economic improvement of the area. My design not only adds urban green space to the landscape, but also actively encourage people to join into the process of forming a harmonious community integrated ecological, cultural, and humanities. The planting box encourages consumers to “co-produce” their own solutions to design problems. The common roof garden has a wide range of potential uses for residents to sunbath, plant flowers and play tennis. People share information and knowledge through media. Therefore, consumers have a direct link to their daily life and desires. The project provides a new solution of social problem to emphasize the relationship between human and the nature.
Symbiotic relationship between residents and plants
The concept of “you can join hands in creating a better living environment” is conveyed by the building.
Plants are transmitted between the floors by ransmission tube

After analyzed behaviors of inhabitants and growth of plants, we realize longterm landscape facilities do not meet the transitional building groups. The modularity manner, with the part pushing the whole, can then expand green area. My goal is to increase the green coverage and recover the natural characteristics of Shamen Village. In the meanwhile, the project provides more ways for people to actively take part in the environment improvement.

COMPARISON
Shamen Village is located in Zhengzhou City, Henan Province. The total area is 1300 sq m. Shamen Village has become the most popular habitat for migrant workers because of its cheap rental prices and complete living facilities. However, Shamen Village is a forgotten place in the urban redevelopment plan. This community is dirty, poor, and congested due to the rapid development of industry and urbanization. Buildings here are close to another, so there has no space for plants.

People have a direct link to their daily life and desires. The design of my planting box is a new solution of social problem in new era. The design creates a framework for the community to engage with. The strategy of ‘incompleteness’ is invaluable in community engaged in this project. Cities take time to emerge and will take on their own life if the opportunity is created.

The planting box is small enough to put on the balcony. It occupies a limited area and uses the space in vertical direction sufficiently. The planting box has a decomposition box near the organic soil which can turn rubbish into fertilizer. This approach has an international relevance. The design encourages consumers to “co-produce” their own solutions to design problems. The aim
of the design is appealing people to join into the process of changing from dirty village to beautiful district. The resident cut the plant and drop it to another resident through transfer tube, so people can share their plants. In addition, there are some bottles that people can put their plants in them and bring to others as a gift. There is a common roof garden. It has a wide range of potential uses for residents to sunbath, plant flowers and play
tennis. Migrant families who live there choose the right plants on the accompanying website, and communicate experience with neighborhood. The concept of “you can join hands in creating a better living environment” is conveyed by the media. The net becomes a universal medium, the conduit for the information that flows through migrant families’ eyes and ears and into their mind.

Landscape Puqian, China
Resilience Coastal Area is my undergraduate thesis project, which aims to adapt coastal cities to typhoon question. The Resilience Coastal breaks down coastal areas into four segments: beach, wetland, cargo terminal, and fisherman’s wharf. Multiple linked design is full of resilience. The Resilience Coastal goes beyond typhoon protection by integrating social and economic amenities that enhance habit, improve waterfront access, and create new recreational opportunities. Various segments become a catalog of adaptive strategies which improved connections between the waterfront and human. The main strategies are inheritance, integration and transformation. The idea for the Resilience
Coastal is to protective infrastructure that enriched, rather than deadened, the waterfront, its habitat, and its relationship to upland communities. Fishery resources constitute an important part of local economy. The infrastructure of cargo terminal has infrastructure provide convenience for fishermen. The pond was turned into wetland landscapes that manage storm water and integrate recreation, agriculture, social services, and economic opportunities.
