Issue IX Spring/Summer 2016
WE ARE SCARLETTE THE FASHION MAGAZINE AT OSU Our mission is to showcase campus individuality and beauty, presenting new ideas and exciting photography both to the Ohio State University campus and to the world. Students are responsible for the entire process and execution of the magazine. This makes Scarlette a unique organization where students can take their learning outside of the classroom. Our goal is to create an environment on campus where students feel comfortable expressing their individuality through fashion. With each of our bi足annual issues we aim to inspire our readers and deliver new perspectives on the world of fashion.

The City for Fashion

ased on factors such as the amount of fashion designers, the number of people in the fashion industry, and the presence of major companies like Limited Brands and DSW, Columbus has recently emerged as the #3 city in the United States for fashion. Columbus falls only to New York City and Los Angeles, cities known worldwide for their fashion presence. Columbus is home to roughly 520 designers, making Columbus’s concentration of fashion industry employees almost 3.4 times the national average. Columbus is also known for having an amazing shopping scene and artistic community. All of these factors have contributed to Columbus’s status as the #3 city in the country for fashion.
Columbus is home to major retailers who have locations all around the world. The big six companies with headquarters in Columbus are Express, Abercrombie and Fitch, DSW, Lane Bryant, The Limited, and Fortune 500 Company, Limited Brands.
Columbus also hosts several major fashionrelated events that attract crowds from all around the country. Every Halloween, Columbus presents HighBall, “the nation’s fiercest costume party.” HighBall brings together runway style and the culture of the Short North Arts District. Columbus also hosts the annual
FASHION MUSIC Fashion Meets Music Festival, which has showcased local designers and musical acts such as Young the Giant, Ludacris, and Andy Grammar. Other popular events include Fashion Week Columbus, Columbus College of Art and Design’s Senior Fashion Show, and Alternative Fashion Week.
Easton, Polaris, and the Short North are just a few of the shopping destinations in Columbus. Easton, which has been dubbed the “Rodeo Drive of the Midwest” by USA Today, is the real estate project of Les Wexner, the founder, chairman, and CEO of Limited Brands and Ohio State alum. The Short North Arts District is also
a mecca for art lovers and boutique shoppers alike, embracing creativity and hand picked fashions. The atmosphere is also attractive to those in the fashion industry. David Kornberg, the president of Express, has stated that Columbus is “a town with really great, old values and it’s one of the few places in the rat-race world where you can have a good quality of life.” Compared to the fast pace life of New York City and Los Angeles, Columbus is a relaxing atmosphere perfect for having a low-key life. No one is benefitting more from Columbus’s new title than The Ohio State University. Les Wexner has donated nearly $200 million to the university, resulting in the renaming of the Ohio State University Medical Center to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Ohio State’s art museum, The Wex (also named after Wexner), has been home to exhibitions of art by the likes of Andy Warhol and Annie Leibovitz thanks to Express. Because of the high volume of major retailers that have headquarters in Columbus, the amount of designers and other fashion industry employees is on the rise. Fashion-related events and high-end shopping destination are also attracting even more fashion-minded people. There has never been a better time for fashionistas and fashionistos in Columbus than the present day. -Taylor Metheny
