BMX Racing Best BMX Racers in the World will compete in Rock Hill Rock Hill will be the center of the BMX world July 25-30, 2017 for the 2017 UCI BMX World Championships at the Novant Health BMX Supercross Track in Rock Hill’s Riverwalk community. The UCI BMX World Championships were last held in the USA in Louisville, KY in 2001. More than 40 countries will be represented by approximately 3,300 riders, with an estimated 20,000 spectators. Event attendees will have the opportunity to witness fierce competition among world-class amateur and elite athletes at what is projected to be the largest international sporting event in South Carolina history. A Local Organizing Committee (LOC), under the direction of the City of Rock Hill and Parks, Recreation & Tourism (PRT) department staff, are earnestly planning event logistics, community special events and outreach. Mayor Doug Echols commented, “We intend to roll out the red carpet for thousands of visitors from around the world in 2017 and show them the true meaning of ‘Southern hospitality.’ This is a unique opportunity for Rock Hill and the Carolinas to

be on a global stage, and prove to the world that we are ready--not only for BMX, but for a variety of tourism and business opportunities.” The track is the first Olympic-caliber BMX training facility open to the general public on the east coast. Built to standards set by UCI, the world governing body for the sport of cycling, the track is operated by the City of Rock Hill PRT Department, offering open practices, rider development and races throughout the year. BMX, an abbreviation for bicycle motocross, first gained popularity in the 1960s and 70s when children began racing their bicycles on dirt tracks in southern California. Now it ranks among the fastest-growing sports for US youth participants across all sports, with 2.6 million people involved in BMX across the US and 70% of participants under the age of 24. BMX became a full medal Olympic sport beginning with the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, China. With over 180 landmarks listed on the National Register of Historic Places, York was once known as the “Charleston of the Upcountry.” As you stroll through downtown you will rediscover the history of “Old Yorkville”. The array of specialty shops, restaurants, and a historic movie theater make the charming downtown an experience individual’s return to time and time again. Handcrafted furniture, original art, high end clothing and jewelry, custom-made guitars, and even golf putters are among the many shopping treasures you’ll find in downtown York.
