Growing in Faith Lutheran Style It seems like I cannot pick up a periodical, newspaper or book without seeing an article about how to grow in faith. These seem to attract people who truly desire to deepen their relationship with God. However, nearly all of these articles promise some system or approach that one could reasonably substitute growing in faith with the topics: How to lose weight, how to get rich, or how to run faster. In other words, they trivialize faith and make promises, which only God can make. The approach to faith we advocate at First Lutheran will not make the best seller list or world-wide news. Our approach is a simple approach more akin to growing in love during a long committed relationship or marriage. The key to this approach is staying connected to the promises God has made to us in our baptisms. In our baptism, God promised to connect us to his Body, the Body of Christ, in a way that has been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Growing in faith is the daily affirmation of what God has already done and continues to promise to do with us and in us. Thus, staying connected with this promising God is the only resource we have as God’s children here at First Lutheran. So, you ask, what can I do to grow in faith? It is hard for me to imagine how one could respond with anything more than the promises in the service of Affirmation of Baptism: to live among God’s faithful people, to hear his Word and share in his supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of our Lord Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth.

Six of our young people, Jonathan Denne, Brittney Geary, Scott Geary, Ross Johnson, Kwincie Maynard, and Jordan Munson will be making that affirmation on Reformation Sunday, October 27. It is also a time for all who are baptized to remember that with them we remember that those are the promises with which all baptized Christians define our spiritual growth as well. Pastor Wicks

Many of you have put in a freewill offering for the wonderful veggies he brought all summer long, and now he really outdid himself by bringing peaches off his trees. Everything was great! Thank you so much, Randy, for sharing your talent. We’ll keep you posted on what we spend the money on……...let me see? Frannie Krommenhoek First Blooms A special thank you to all the FLCW members that brought food to our house. Also thank you for the cards, well wishes, and prayers. A very special thank you to Pastor Wicks for his visits, prayers, and communion. It has helped a great deal and I appreciate it more than anyone realizes.

Our Alternative Wednesday Worship begins at 7:00 p.m. each Wednesday evening. We want to provide an opportunity for worship for those who are unable to attend the Sunday Worship (the service is based on the previous Sunday’s worship). It is simple, sometimes without music, but always including the essentials of worship: Word and Sacrament. Moment of Contact

Holy Family Food Pantry I became coordinator of our food pantry on August 21 and it’s been an exciting six weeks! The food pantry outgrew the space we had in the downstairs youth room, plus it wasn’t an easy job filling the food bags and then bringing them upstairs to hand-out. We are now located upstairs in the church office, with room to organize. With Cindy’s help, we now have parents, who are serving the meal to our youth on Wednesday, helping to fill food bags, and restocking shelves. It gets crowded and loud, but our hope is that parents will share this experience with their children. In these six weeks we have served 155 households. Each household receives a bag of non-perishables and a bag of meat. We buy our food from the Food Bank of Siouxland, but also welcome your donations. The first Sunday of the month is designated as Food Pantry Sunday. We encourage all to bring a bag of food forward during the offering, or to donate money to purchase food. Every month I will be giving an update on how we (me!) are doing along with requests for what we are in need of. This month we are in need of peanut butter, mac & cheese, pasta, and rice. In addition, we can always use canned fruits and vegetables and plastic grocery bags. Thanks for your support of this ministry. Larayne Olson

Imagine………...starting with a few loaves of bread…...adding shelves to a youth room to be able to add more food to serve more people. That’s what you’ve done for First Lutheran! It’s through and because of you, Larry, that The Holy Family Food Pantry of First Lutheran exists today! So, thank you. Everyone at First appreciates all you’ve done and accomplished. Larayne Olson The Holy Family Food Pantry of First Lutheran Coordinator Stop in the church office and see where our food pantry is now located. If you happened to miss the article last month, we knew the spare office as the “Holy Family” named for the stained glass window designed and built by Gerhardt Paulsrud. So that is how we decided to name our Food Pantry “The Holy Family Food Pantry of First Lutheran.”

Have You Noticed The New Area? We need your cans and bottles! Please put them in our new enclosed area by the garage. The new area was constructed by Jason Denne who chose this project for his Eagle Scout work. Thank you, Jason. Thanks to everyone that already drops off cans. It’s amazing how much money is earned from the cans and bottles. Just think, you wouldn’t have to go through all your dirty old cans and go to the recycling place. This helps raise money for youth activities.

NEWS FROM THE NURSERY! During the school year, we staff our nursery during the 10:00 a.m. worship service. Our nursery is located in the basement next to the Fellowship Hall. I am looking for additional people who can be added to our volunteer list. We would like to have some of our high school and middle school students help in the nursery if they are interested. Often, kids need volunteer hours for organizations at school, and this would be a perfect opportunity for them to pick up some hours. Please contact Cindy at 239-3942 if you are interested in helping.

High School Youth! This year, our High School Youth will join with all of the LLC youth and eat at 5:30 p.m. in the gym on Wednesday evenings. Larry will have youth group from 6:00—7:30 p.m. All high school youth need to fill out registration forms and turn in their fees of $20.00 (per semester) as soon as possible.

Food Pantry Sunday The first Sunday of each month has been designated “Food Pantry” Sunday. All youth are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to worship, where they will be asked to bring their items forward during the offering. NOTES FROM CINDY, OUR PARISH EDUCATION DIRECTOR “Spark Our World” Our education programs are well underway here at First Lutheran, and we’re off to a great start! It’s always good to see everyone again and to have Sunday School and LLC classes back in session. We have beautiful, freshly painted classrooms this fall. The colors are “kid” friendly and conducive to learning. During LLC, the youth in Grades 1-5 study the parts of the Catechism and prepare to participate in worship. Our Middle School students study the Old and New Testaments, and take a more in-depth look at the parts of the Catechism and Lutheranism. In Sunday School, we are using a lectionary-based curriculum called “Spark.” This means that our Sunday School lessons are tied into the readings for the worship service. Our youth are excited to be here and we have great things going on here on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings! The focus this year is on serving others in keeping with our theme “God’s Work. Our Hands.” Please keep our Sunday School and LLC programs, teachers and students in your prayers.

All Saints Sunday, November 3 On Sunday, November 3, we will be celebrating the Feast of All Saints. On this day, we remember especially those who are new to the church family in the past year (those who have been baptized), and all those who continue their sainthood in eternity (those who have died.) We will again have a display in the narthex which will include the names of all those from this congregation who have been baptized or who have died during the past year. In addition, if you have a relative or friend you would like to remember, you are invited to bring a picture or some other object which we could include in our display in the narthex. Please bring items to the church office by noon on Friday, November 1, to have them included in the display. They may be picked up again on Sunday after worship, or in the church office the following week.

Hymns of the Day for October, 2013

October 6: “We Walk By Faith” #635 The text was written by Henry Alford, 1810-1871, born in London, England. This text was also found in With One Voice, #675, but here it is paired with a different tune. The tune used here was written by Marty Haugen, and published in 1984. Marty Haugen has written numerous other pieces of music which we sing on a regular basis, including many of the psalms we sing each weekend. Twenty of his compositions are included in our new worship book. October 13: “Baptized and Set Free” #453 Cathy Skogen-Soldner wrote the text and tune for this hymn for Holden Village, a year-round Lutheran renewal center near Chelan, Washington. Of the hymn, she says that “even though we may only use a few handfuls of water when we baptize, I included larger bodies of water (ocean, fountain, river) to invite the singing congregation to celebrate the generous heart of God.”

October 20: “If You But Trust in God to Guide You” #769 The text and tune of this hymn were written in 1641 by Georg Neumark during the Thirty Years’ War. He was born in 1621, three years after the beginning of the Thirty Years’ War. As a young adult, when he attempted to go to Konigsberg to attend the university, the group in which he traveled was plundered by highwaymen who stripped Neumark of everything but his prayer book and a small amount of cash. He returned to Magdeburg, but could find no employment. Several months later, he was hired as a tutor for the family of Judge Stephan Henning. It was at this time that he wrote this hymn. He wrote “This good fortune, which came so suddenly and, as if fallen from heaven, gladdened my heart so that on that very day I composed to the honor of my beloved Lord…” October 27: “Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word” #517 The text for this hymn was written by Martin Luther and was published in 1542. The tune, ERHALT UNS, HERR, may have been written by Luther, and was included first in Joseph Klug’s Geistiche Lieder, in 1543. It is patterned after a twelfth-century plainsong, “Vni Redemptor gentium”. J.S. Bach based his Cantata 126 on this tune.
