‌deep down we know that architecture lives or dies by its quality of space; the being-there. The object (building) contains and conditions that space, but the space is what we experience. It’s the strange psyche that a space must Fit

Soothe Intrigue Enchant Enrich So architecture becomes a critical living interface between without and within. It must delineate and safeguard both, while providing life-giving connections. Elizabeth Farrelly - Sydney Morning Herald columnist, author, architecture critic & essayist

Highland Village Baxters Food Group Fochabers, Scotland Architecture, Branding and Master Plan Founded in 1868, the Baxters Company remains a family business today. Bringing the history and heritage into the present, images of the Baxter’s company are brought to life with modern materiality and exhibition design process. This project emphasizes an educational user experience, both throughout the site and within the buildings and its amenities, all the while making the rich Baxters history “come alive” through out the site and context.

Master Planning Building on History, Improving the Future Ranging from master planning to building restoration, The Collective has experience in shaping dynamic, connected spaces influenced by our belief in a sustainable future that is ecologically, socially, and economically vibrant. Our team is adept at establishing value on multiple fronts by tackling the challenges of implementation, addressing the ‘big picture’ issues and forging a clear, detailed action plan, even at the largest scale, that is both elegant and eminently buildable.

N Y S t a t e C a p i t o l Restoration & Renovation Albany, NY Restoration & Renovation Master Plan Award Winning Project The New York State Capitol Building in Albany was built between 1867 and 1899. The State of New York recognized the need for a comprehensive, multi-year restoration and renovation effort. A thorough multivolume historic structures report was undertaken documenting the history, physical development, and current conditions of the entire building followed by the preparation of a masterplan. This program outlined areas to be restored versus rehabilitated. Priorities were established and preliminary scopes of work were assembled for the efforts designated. With the work and priorities indentified, cost projections were prepared for a five year program.

Restoration & Renovation Madison Presbyterian New York, NY Restoration & Renovation Master Plan Following the recommendation of an earlier masterplan for phased implementation, the renovation of the upper portion of the sanctuary was undertaken, including the restoration of ceilings and decorative fretwork, a new fire suppression system, lighting and facilities upgrade. Over an eight year period the eleven-story Parish Hall, containing community facilities, a nursery school and residential units, was completely renovated and the general infrastructure of the church upgraded.

Dumfries & Galloway College Curricula Expansion Dumfries, Scotland, UK Hospitality Education & Fitness Amenities We envisioned a space for expanding the client’s curriculum offerings with a new program of Hospitality, Food and Beverages in close collaboration with Dumfries and Galloway College. Our design solution inserts a professional level kitchen and restaurant enabling knowledge building and career specialization while providing students opportunities for real life experiences in a fine dining facility. Balancing the needs of accreditation approvals with existing facilities and design, our solution captures usable space in a transparent building insert. This new addition set between the existing green trapezoidal volumes of the library and the adjacent purple classroom pod, provides functional space while showcasing the new curricular components.

Corporate Office Goldman Sachs New York, NY Interior Architecture This holistic, 3 million square foot, interior work environment was explored to be p ositio n ed fu tu r e fo rw ard . It was d e v elop ed to allo w for the in t e grati on of work, f itn es s, an d relaxation into one vertical campus setting, representing current cultural shifts in the workplace. With the intention of improving the quality of life for their employees, incorporated was a hotel and spa along with a state of the art sports club, child care and retail as part of this corporate office and facility project. Pivotal to the design thinking were considerations of people at a human scale.

The Edinburgh College of Art Evolution House The Edinburgh University Edinburgh Scotland, UK Administration and teaching facility This project uses design to convey ECA’s philosophy of a transparency of communication, accessibility, and collaborative learning. The architectural design solution manifests the projects goals through the careful use of planning, lighting and material selections, as well as by delivering a cohesive and inspirational learning experience.

The Edinburgh College of Art Connector Bridge The Edinburgh University Edinburgh, Scotland, UK Master Plan and Design As part of the new master plan for the ECA, a “connector bridge was required to link the new Evolution House to the ECA’s main building and Art College. In the heart of the historic city center, the connector is lightly inserted into the overall campus, framing views of the Edinburgh castle and providing a comfortable connection with the main building on campus. The connector also provides an interactive platform for student work, display and experimentation. Here students can replace and reconfigure parts of the material enclosure to allow for exploration and expression of art, design and architecture.

The Mohawk Group Flagship Showroom New York, NY Interior Architecture A first for Mohawk, this flagship showroom was designed to host seven significant and distinct carpet and flooring brands. Acknowledging that “carpet is king, all design inspiration was drawn from flooring materials, manufacturing process and accouterments. The design concept uses the metaphor of a carpet roll unfurling with the two cylindrical volumes designated as Reception and a shared meeting space connecting the two ends of the floor.

Boys & Girls Harbor Concept New York, NY Education & Performing Arts Center Programmed for a school from Kindergarten to 12th grade and a performing arts facility, this project is designed to become a vital nucleus for the community. Exploring experiential learning methodologies and state of the art and experimental / flexible classrooms, the project utilizes natural light, space and architecture to promote optimal learning in the urban city context.

Carnegie Science Center E-Motion Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Interactive Sculptural Installation With the integration of art and science, “Emotion” is an interactive sculptural installation designed to ‘mark’ the science museum. The sculpture actively changes from day to night. E-Motion has become a commanding symbol for the Carnegie Science Center in the city of Pittsburgh.

Karastan Carpet Translations Collection Antron Design Excellence Award, Los Angels, 2006 Best of Show Award, NeoCon innovation award , 2005 Having never been done before, the Translations Collection transformed the current woven technology to produce a physically 3-Dimesional product. Contrary to the typical carpet design process for manipulation of color pattern and texture, Translations uses one color, and instead, manipulates the inherent structure as pattern and 3-Dimensionality to induce change. Recognized for its innovative use of existing technology, when installed Translations delights over time with the discovery of new patterns shaped by light and shadow. Using a high lustre Antron yarn, the colors were inspired by the engineered building materials such as glass, metal and concrete.

Sensory Collection Karastan Carpet Best of NeoCon Silver Award Winner, 2007 The sense of touch is the only sense that is fully developed at the time of birth in the human species and the one sense that cannot survive without. Because textile / fiber products allure people to touch, the Sensory collection explored the qualities of touch both literal and visual. Synthetic fiber is made to look richer than wool with the intentional focus on textures with optimal tactile appeal.

Spatial Color Live lab color experiment Architectural Digest Home Design Show March 2006 Does yellow make people happy or does it evoke aggression? Is blue really calming? Do restaurants designed with red encourage guests to linger and eat more? Bridging Art with Science, Spatial Color was an exciting project which obtained comprehensive color knowledge in the built environment. This three room installation experiment documented behavioral reactions through the observational recording of visceral and the physiological human response as measured through empirical means. Studying three color immersions simultaneously, a comparative analysis of the colors relative to each other was also carefully conducted.

The Spatial Color Project was reported on the Today Show (NBC), Published in numerous magazines and books including Metropolis, Contract,, and “The Shape of Green: Aesthetics, Ecology, and Design by Lance Hosey (Jun 2012)

Our Ethos Our projects are led by one of four design leaders who remain the point of contact from project beginning to end. This ensures a consistent, intuitive understanding of the overall scale and complexity of the client and project, along with the required and necessary specialty of skill and expertise. As practitioners, we actively bridge design practice, research/theory and education, to arrive at substantial and meaningful project solutions. We hold meticulous client interviews and make observational studies which enable us to understand client requirements. We help to define and write the design brief. For each project we broadly research the industry and the people, as well as the latest social environmental thinking and technological developments. We incorporate our findings to deliver the most creative, functional solutions for our clients, striving to generate the most intelligent and responsive projects. The Collective’s collaborative structure results in highly creative, successful work as exemplified by our firm’s reputation and receipt of major industry awards and accolades.
