FROM THE PRODUCERS “Applause begets applause in the theatre, as laughter begets laughter and tears beget tears.” —Clayton Hamilton, Theory of the Theatre

What does it mean to be community theatre? It means you. Each role supports another—and your role as audience is no different! Our production staff, actors, and volunteers have had a great time working hard to take these shows from page to stage. The final step is inviting you, our audience, into the world we’ve created just for you. This season, we present you with a slate of performances that bring laughter and tears, joy and sadness—and all things in between. We take you from the set of a biblical epic to an English flat to a spelling competition to the Warsaw ghetto to magical woods and, finally, to a Pennsylvanian estate where nothing short of hilarity can ensue. Thank you for joining us on this adventure—sit back, relax, and enjoy the world we’ve created for you.

ABOUT THE PLAY The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee reveals the exciting and stressful world of competitive spelling. The music and lyrics written by William Finn and the book written by Rachel Sheinkin are based on the improvisational play C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E. Finn and Sheinkin incorporated the improvisational aspect of the play into their musical through the use of audience participation. Six spellers and three adults are joined by four audience volunteers who act as spellers. For this production, I have adapted the play by adding two additional spellers in place of volunteers. The play lends itself to adaptations, so we have all worked to adjust it to the unique space at the Boal Barn. Spelling Bee is a piece that is accessible on many levels. In this production, I have tried to celebrate one theme in particular: awkwardness. I have asked my designers and actors to recall their experience as a middle school student. With this theme in mind and a clear sense of character, the actors have moved beyond the script, improvising and adlibbing. For this reason, you will experience a different show depending upon the night and where you are seated. It has been a wonderful experience bringing this show to life. I am very grateful for my hardworking and creative cast and crew. Enjoy the show.

ARTISTIC STAFF Based upon C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, an original play by The Farm.

Sarah Saltzberg. The Farm’s interest is in the role of improvisation in creating new work for the theatre. The Farm initially designates a two-week intensive period in which to discover, develop, and rehearse a play from the impulses borne mainly out of the pressure of a deadline. Previous projects include “Super” (at Atlantic Theatre Studios), “Why I Hate Florida” (workshop at White Wave in DUMBO) and “C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E” (at the Present Company Theatorium in October 2002), on which The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is based. The character and original dialogue of “Beth Marguiles,” “Vice President Douglas Panch,” “Mr. Barfee,” and “Logan Schwarzengrubenierre” were created by Rebecca Feldman, Jay Reiss, Dan Fogler, and Sarah Saltzberg, respectively.

The Barrington Stage Company workshop of THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE was originally co-directed by Michael Barakiva and Rebecca Feldman. EVA HEPPELMANN (Director) was born American but is British by heart. She has performed in many shows at the Boal Barn, but The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee marks Eva’s directorial debut at the Boal Barn. She recently graduated from the University of Maryland. This has been a wonderful experience, and she would like to thank her cast and crew for all of their hard work.

Last summer she worked for Cortland Repertory Theater in Cortland, NY as their scenic/carpentry intern, and also worked as a rigging and automations intern for Cirque du Soleil’s Mystère in Las Vegas, Nevada. She’s so excited to be able to merge her Barn family with her college family this summer and is ecstatic to get the chance to work this summer with her best friends. At the end of the summer, Jillian will be returning to Cincinnati, Ohio as a Junior Technical Direction major at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in the school of Theatrical Design and Production.
