Being young… We all know that Birmingham has the highest amount of young people in a city than any other city in Europe (and if you didn’t know, now you do!) but at what point do we lose the word ‘young’ to describe ourselves and when does the word ‘old’ take over?

Managing Director and Editor Jessica Fitzpatrick Jessica@scenebirmingham.co.uk

Last week while watching the Xfactor it dawned on me that if I applied for the Xfactor next year, not that I would because I couldn’t sing if my life depended on it, but if I did, I would be put in the older category. OLDER! I’m 24 years old right now and I’m holding on to being ‘young’ for as long as I can, why? Well, because being a young person in Birmingham is one of the best things in life you can be- why? Because young people from Birmingham are brilliant!

Editors Assistant Talisha Johnson

Every issue SCENE aims to celebrate and showcase the works and talents of young people in this city and give them a platform to stand up on. What I love about my job more than anything are the people I meet because of it. Last month I was completely honoured to have been nominated for an award at The Youth 4 Excellence Awards, the whole ceremony was beautiful, but what impressed me the most was that all of it was organised by young people. These young people aren’t doing it for the money or the recognition either, they are putting on this event to highlight the hidden talents amongst our community and show just how special the youth of today within our city really are.

Contributing Writers Talisha Johnson, Georgia Adderley and Shara Johnson

In this issue, Talisha Johnson interviews winner of the Youth for Excellence Award Daniel Stone, a 24 year old student who helped raise £100,000 for charity! We also speak to Stratford band KNGDMS and fashion brand King & Queen.

Contributing Photographers Jas Sansi

INTERVIEW

Daniel Stone

AN interview WITH Daniel Ston e Winner of 'Celebrating youth excellence 2013' Recognised as the UK’s number one black student, Daniel Stone, 24 has been recently presented with the Academic Award and the prestigious ‘Youth of Excellence Award 2013’ at this year’s fifth Annual Celebrating Youth Excellence Awards, which recognise the positive contributions and successes of young people within the region. The Birmingham born Oxford University graduate has made a plethora of highly esteemed achievements during his short years and is truly an asset to the community. Now an Editor of Rising Stars publication, Tee talks to him about his triumph of becoming a role model for young people.

INTERVIEW

Congratulations on your achievements, how does it feel to be crowned the Youth of Excellence Award winner 2013? I feel truly humbled. It is always a great honour and surprise to be awarded for something that I see as me just living life. I am glad that my story and achievements will be used to inspire the next generation.

With on-going stereotypes about disengaged youth, what does it mean to you personally to be recognised by your community for something positive? It was fantastic to be part of the C.Y.E Awards, which is such an uplifting event. We often hear so much negativity in the press about young people, but it was brilliant to see so many young high achievers in our community.

During an internship at the Trade Union Congress, you addressed the community about the impact of learning. Apart from receiving your awards, what was another highlight of the C.Y.E Awards for you? Do you believe young people today value the importance of I enjoyed meeting some incredible role models from education? different walks of life. What stood out for me is that they I think that most do. Certainly if you can excel academically, all had to show incredible focus and determination in it will make the next steps in your life that little bit easier. order to turn their talent into something real. However, I would also say that education comes in many forms – you cannot rely on teachers to educate you how What are three pieces of advice that you would give to a to be a man or woman, or how to apply academic lessons school students? to our individual lives. You only have responsibility for our own education. one chance, so give it your best shot. In the past, there have been negative stigmas attached to young Afro-Caribbean males in regards to their academic success. What are your views on this? I don’t think we can hide from the fact that statistically young Afro-Caribbean males have previously underperformed, but now the gap is closing thanks to the work of particular individuals in the community as well organisations such as Black Boys Can and the Amos Bursary. Programmes like these will only work if the individual has made the decision to work hard and to take responsibility for their own life. Previously you helped to raise over £100,000 for charity and to develop a citywide partnership group. Why do you believe it is important to be an active member of the community? I do not think we can ignore the role that our environment will play in allowing us to fulfil our potential. Our expectations, attitudes, and behaviours are to some extent created by the people around us, and so we should try to create a positive environment that allows people to grow and develop.

Recover from setbacks – It is easy to give up after the first bad exam result. I have suffered many setbacks throughout my life but you have to learn to dust yourself off and keep going. Find your passion – You will love learning about something that you are passionate about and should use it as the foundation for enjoying school. Match of the Day is so much more interesting when you understand percentages, literature, and science! With a belt of incredible achievements, what venture will you take on next? I am just about to start work with a charity called the Ascension Trust, where I will be involving more young people in tackling local issues of crime and poor educational attainment. INTERVIEW

K NG DM S AN interview WITH KNGDMS

To be honest all of our spare time is spent in the studio, doing promo and just general band duties, it helps that all of us are so close so it doesn’t feel like a job.

How did you guys get into music? Is it something you’ve always had a passion for? I think for all of us music is something we have wanted to do from the minute we picked up our instruments, we have all been in various projects around the Stratford scene over the years and luckily we are came together to form KNGDMS. As a band, you gel really well, how long have you all known each other? And how did you all meet? KNGDMS is a fairly new project to be honest, Alex and Adam have been writing music together for a long time and then after a few changes of members we got Oli in to play bass as we had been to see his old band a few times and thought he would fit in perfectly. Then we played a gig with James (Mr Wheelz) supporting us and then we did a bit of a collaboration together and decided it would be cool to work together on a permanent basis. We decided to get Sam involved as we had heard his house/dance project (cutting agents) and thought he would be a great addition to the band and set us apart from other bands in the scene.

All of us have completely different influences as we are all into different stuff, they range from: Bon Iver, Bastille, The Weeknd, Led Zeplin, RX bandits to Drake, Disclosure, Kendrick Lamar, to Mac Miller and Mikill Pane. Your music style crosses boundaries, was becoming a ‘multi-genre’ band something you’ve always aspired to be or is it something that developed over time? We never really aspired to be a multi genre band, it has just developed over time, when we started out we were just playing straight up punk and the over time we got into different bands/artists and then realised we were limiting ourselves as a band so with the addition of James and Sam we have just developed a new sound which we are all super happy about!

You record your songs in a home built studio; do you feel this adds to the personal feel of your songs? Yeah massively, having our own studio has helped us so much as we don’t have to rush anything, we can record a track then leave it for a month or so then come back to it with a fresh mind. Whereas, if we paid We know the music industry requires a lot of time and for studio time we have a time limit meaning we commitment; do you guys still have time for hobbies and might miss stuff along the way as we are rushing to socialising? get it done. BEAT the BULGE this autumn For most, getting fit is not an easy challenge. Busy lifestyles mean that gym sessions are often pushed to the back of priority lists and that food choices are sometimes made due to convenience and speed rather than important nutritional values. Unfortunately, as the autumn months approach and shorts begin to be replaced with chunky woolies, it can get even harder to find the motivation to stay fit and trim, and it is during the colder season that staff at theclubandspa find that people need more help and encouragement than usual to continue on with their fitness regime. Despite this, they are keen to point out that there are a number of ways to

keep energy and enthusiasm levels high, despite the drop in temperature. Paul, one of the club’s most successful members has recently lost 6 stone and credits his amazing weightloss to the training programme designed for him by one of the trainers using the wellness key system, and also his regular reviews which have helped him to track improvements in his strength and stamina. Theclubandspa’s Gym Manager Nathan insists that although monitoring your progress is one way of keeping yourself on the fitness ‘straight and narrow’, there are plenty of other ways to keep yourself slim too. Follow his top fat burning tips to banish the blubber this autumn:

Include fat in your diet Now, let’s get this straight - certain fats are good for you and can even promote fat loss, particularly Omega 3-s. Eating fat does seem odd when you’re trying to lose weight, but if you keep your fat intake at around 30% of your total daily calorie intake, you can actually boost your fat loss compared to a low-fat diet. Fish such as Salmon, trout and sardines are a perfect source of Omega 3’s.

2. Get shaking on the Power Plates For years, there was a myth that a power plate could vibrate fat away without the need to work out. While this isn’t completely true, recent studies have shown that people using the power plates for 15 minutes were found to have lower body fat then those who didn’t. Brands we love

AN interview WITH russell & luke OWNERs OF king & queen clothing Launched in 2012, street wear brand ’King & Queen’ are well on their way to making a mark in the fashion world. Proving to be a hit with Chelsea footballers, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard, the popular urban brand aims to put a positive spin on street wear with an Eco friendly aesthetic and honour, love and respect at the heart of its message. Most recently K&Q celebrates its 1st birthday, so we thought what perfect timing to see what the founders Russell Hewes and Luke Simms have been up to in the last year.

Why did you decide to set up your own clothing line? Russell: I was in the middle of setting up a t-shirt clothing line, which has always been one of my dreams. The only problem I had was finding someone to create the designs I had in mind, I wanted to create a positive line with designs and inspirational quotes, I wanted people to be inspired and take the message wherever they went. I asked everyone that I knew who was a design creative, as I had the vision but not the skill to get it on to paper. Luke came down one week in summer 2012 to stay with my flatmates and it was the first time I saw some of his stuff, and I liked it. I showed him my setup and the simple designs I’d been doing and quickly realised he was someone with a completely different skill set, but with a very similar vision, and with our vision shared we went straight to work! What was the thought process behind the inspiring name ‘King and Queen’? Russell: It’s about empowering people, we want everyone to know in themselves that they are a “King” / “Queen” doesn’t matter what race background or origin you are from the most important thing is to always have selfrespect first. Luke: I was looking into names that had power and authority behind it, for example when you hear the word ‘colonel’ you instantly think of someone important, who has the experience and who has been there done that. That was the feel I wanted to create with the name, but not in a way that dictates or looks down at people. It was also inspired by urban slang, if I was to meet a good mate who I hadn’t seen in a while, I would say “yes King” so

what I then added was the Queen aspect to it, to appeal to the women. Most recently, there has been wave of successful urban brands. What makes you stand out from your competitors? We are not trying to follow anyone and what they’re doing, just because a trend may be popular at the time, it doesn’t mean it is going become part of ‘KQ’ plans. All our designs are original and have been created from scratch, we want to bring back old trends that people have forgotten about, whilst having a quirky, innovative twist. We want to push the boundaries on our products, and how they are made. All our clothing is made with a zero carbon foot print being “CLIMATE NEUTRAL” and “FAIR TRADE”. This is a policy we want to always stand by. We also want to start delving into cut and sew techniques, creating one off niche pieces. What is the signature style or silhouette that customers will be able to uniquely identify as a K&Q design? The style of ‘KQ’ design is emerging through our existing products. We have subtle and intricate designs. The silhouette of our sub logo is a simplified crown, which is immediately recognisable as ‘KQ’! The main logo is consistently featured on our products to separate our products from competitors. Another silhouette would have to be the chess pieces for the simplicity of design but strength of message. Sometimes people see the gun arms on the chess pieces and misrepresent this as promoting guns, but the message is simple- “Every man needs a woman when his life is a mess, just like a game of chess, the Queen protects the King”.

brands we love

It’s about empowering people; we want everyone to know in themselves that they are a King or Queen. You say your brand represents people struggling with everyday life. What challenges have you faced and overcome with the process of setting up your business? We were in limbo for 5 months waiting for an examiner to process our application for our logo to be a registered trademark, and also had to write a letter asking permission the government’s permission to use the word King & Queen. None of us had a clue about running our own business so we took up a business course with the Princes Trust to learn the basics with setting up and running a business, we spoke to members of HMRC on how to manage tax etc. We didn’t have big investors like other companies so we had to rely on what we could afford. We literally had to make the best out of what we had. We didn’t know how to setup a web site and both shared two weeks looking up at tutorials and learning how to make one. The biggest challenge was adapting to the seasons of fashion. When you have a small amount of funding to create collections, it is important to plan out months ahead, if you’re doing a spring summer drop, everything should be finalised at least 2-3 months before spring summer starts! Also if you’re relying on circulating the money through existing stock! You have to be on the ball in terms of selling your products otherwise there’s no cash flow to send off for a new collection. Getting the balance right and knowing what’s popular to sell will make a big difference when it comes to planning the next collection. If you had to pick someone to be a muse for the brand, who would it be? That’s quite a difficult question, but after watching an interview from one of our favourite artists at the moment Kendrick Lamar, We would have to say him. Like Kendrick we don’t do this for ourselves we create clothing that people love, are inspired and empowered by. “Without you people we wouldn’t exist, we knew if one person liked it that’s all we needed, they would tell their friends and it would grow organically as it has”. Interview by Shara Johnson

BEAUTY

Sequin Autumn is here. Nights have started getting longer and darker. But your make up doesn’t have to! Forget all the autumn doom and gloom by adding some fun sparkle to your evening look. Take a page from the Chanel, Marni and House of Holland AW13/14 catwalks and shine bright with oversized glitter and sequins. Keep it ladylike and on trend with a feline flicked liner and by sticking to monochromes. To keep the look sophisticated (you do not want to turn up at a party like a teenager that has just discovered glitter pots!), make sure that the rest of your make-up is paired down, with nude lips and nails. First, you will need to head to your nearest haberdashery to get a selection of gems, chunky glitter and sequins that you can combine in a number of ways. Think glitterball! It’s all about being creative and having some fun. When creating this look, start with a matte, velvety foundation. In this case Armani Maestro Fusion Foundation was used, a lightweight liquid that reveals the skin’s natural luminosity. Victoria Beckham, Chloe and Stella McCartney all joined the matte skin club this season, with all their models looking polished and chic. Blusher has also taken a back seat this autumn, with brands like Balmain opting for a barely-there blush. Less is more here, as you want the sequins to take center stage. Preparethe eyes with Bobbi Brown Gel Liner in Black Ink and finish the whole look off with MAC Blush in Taupe and Tom Ford’s Lip Colour in Blush Nude. Written by Garazi
