Hakodate fd

Located on the southern tip of the island of Hokkaido, Hakodate was one of the first ports that opened to international trade. The international influence can be seen in the sophisticated architectural styles, juxtaposed against the city’s traditional temples. One of the most underrated Japanese cities, Hakodate is well-known for the panoramic views from Mount Hakodate that encompasses the city, harbour and mountains in the distance.

Freechoice: Discover the history of Goryokaku, or see the highlights of Hakodate. Explore Onuma Quasi-National Park, or enjoy an evening tour to the summit of Mt. Hakodate for sweeping views of the city at night.

Aomori f

Superb seafood, riveting modern art and the world’s largest virgin beech forest, Aomori is a hidden gem that is starting to find its place on the map. This ultra-modern port was rebuilt after World War II, and filled with attractions that will reveal a different side of Japan.

Day 04

Sado Island, Ogi Harbour f

Sado is believed to have been inhabited for over 10,000 years, and even finds mention in Japanese creation stories. Sado Island is a miniature Japan, showcasing every kind of coastal landform seen in Japan and a blend of cultures introduced by previous exiles to the island.

Freechoice: Experience the charm of the Aomori on a walking tour, including visiting the Nebuta Warasse museum, or learn about “Kogin-sashi” embroidery. Choose to visit Hirosaki Castle Park, one of only 11 castles in all of Japan to maintain the original main donjon structure or visit the Sannai Maruyama Archaeological Site, one of the most complete and best preserved Jomon Period villages in Japan.

Day 05 Kanazawa fe

Exceptional historical sites, traditional cuisine, renowned art museums and refined craftwork. Throughout history Kanazawa, meaning ‘the golden marsh’, has been one of Japan’s most important cities for culture and art.

Goryokaku Park, Hakodate, Japan walking tour, including visiting the Nebuta Warasse museum, or learn about “Kogin-sashi” embroidery. Exclusive for Scenic Eclipse guests, watch Kagami-biraki, a ceremony where the lid of a round sake barrel is broken open, believed to be opening the door to luck. The joy of the sake is then shared with the group. Following a traditional performance from local Geikos (Geisha) and Maikos, meet and mingle with them to learn about the life of a Geisha in modern Japan.

Scenic Freechoice activity

Visit the Sannai Maruyama Archaeological Site. This is the largest, most complete, and best preserved village from the Jomon Period dating back to 13000-300 BC.

Day 06 Maizuru f

With a Naval history from 1901, Maizuru was the main port in Japan to receive repatriated soldiers after World War II. Home to the Japanese Navy Base, the closest to North Korea, local fisherman to this day report any suspicious boats who they believe may be North Korean spies.

Freechoice: Learn the naval history at Red Brick Park before seeing the stunning view from Goro Sky Tower, or explore northern Kyoto and Maizuru’s Amanohashidate sandbar. Spend the day taking in Kyoto’s top highlights, including Nijo Castle and the gilded Golden Pavilion, or see the famous Japanese Garden at Tenryuji Temple in Arashiyama and the traditional thatched roof farmhouses in Miyama. Alternatively, join a washi experience that delves into the heritage and beauty of this ancient paper-making tradition.

Day 07 Sakaiminato f

Located in Tottori Prefecture the city lies beneath the dominant feature in the sky to the east, Mt. Daisen also known as ‘mini-Fuji’.

Freechoice: Visit the volcanic Mount Daisen or learn about local art and Japanese garden design with a visit to Adachi Museum of Art and Gardens and Yushien Japanese Garden. Choose to explore the samurai district of Matsue or the Grand Shrine of Izumo, one of Japan’s most important shrines. Alternatively, visit the Yonago Waterbird Sanctuary.

Day 08 Hagi f

Hagi is best known for its preserved former castle town, being fortunate enough to avoid all major disasters since the Edo Period. Located on the South Western corner of Honshu facing the Sea of Japan, this small town has a fascinating history. Wander through the small streets lined with cross-hatched namako walls and samurai houses, stunning castle ruins and traditional potteries.

Freechoice: Join a walking tour of Hagi Castle Town, or visit Rurikoji temple, one of Japan’s most beautiful fivestory pagodas. Spend the day in Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park taking in the breathtaking views or choose to see the works of artist Yoshika Taibi on a private tour with their son.

Busan, South Korea > Seoul

Disembark Scenic Eclipse and board the KTX bullet train to Seoul for your onward travels.
