WITH LINDSAY KALLIS & ROB BURTON

Purchasing their first home in 2019, graphic designer Lindsay and her industrious partner, Rob, have transformed what was once a dilapidated cottage on Tamborine Mountain, into a bright Californian inspired home. A love letter to Lindsay’s birthplace, it is filled with pieces from their time spent in America and their love of mid-century design.

How would you describe the style of your home?

R: I feel like it's mid-century modern, influenced by both Lindsay's Southern Californian upbringing and my country roots. I call it midwestern modern.

L: I'd agree, and with lots of vibrant pops of colour!

What are your favourite pieces in your home?

R: I’d have to say the early 1920s California Flag we just had framed up. We picked it up a couple years ago at the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, California. I also love our 1960s HMV radiogram.

L: Hard to choose! I love our Mark Maggiori print. It's an incredible print and where it's positioned in the house is so lovely because sunrise floods the living room with a pink-orange light. It lights the print up so beautifully. I'm also currently loving the timber sideboard that sits underneath the California flag

Where did you both grow up?

L: We're both west coast kids. I was born in Santa Monica in Los Angeles, California. I moved to Tamborine Mountain when I was 14-years-old.

R: I grew up on the west coast of Australia in Margaret River, a few hours south of Perth.

Did you use any local services to help renovate?

R: Quite a few! Thankfully we have a lot of tradie friends that helped us out, but in addition to friends we used, Coles Earthworks, Five Star Electrical, and Adam at Tamborine Mountain Affordable Tree Services...

What does a day off together look like?

L: Besides a trip to Bunnings or the tip?! We love good coffee so normally visit Picnic or Main Street Provedore with our dogs, Moose and Spud in tow.

R: A day at home landscaping, or building a veggie patch.
