The Heart of Egypt Egypt is home to spectacular desert landscapes steeped in thousands of years of history, great feats of archaeological wonder and Mother Nature’s sensational ability to create her own phenomenon. Follow in the footsteps of mighty pharaohs and biblical prophets as you uncover this unique world.

Great Pyramids of Giza

Cairo The Egyptian capital is the gateway to the Nile delta. A magnificent mix of Roman, Arab and Turkish influence, lush vegetation and contemporary skyscrapers co-exist among its 400 plus registered monuments. Embark on a journey to the Great Pyramids of Giza and the famous Sphinx. Visit the Egyptian Museum, home to items discovered from the tomb of Tutankhamun, and enjoy shopping around the many bazaars in central Cairo.

Nile River

The Nile Recognized as the longest river in the world, the Nile has been named the ‘Father of African Rivers’ and rises from the south of the equator through north east Africa before arriving at the Mediterranean Sea. A lifeline for the Ancient Egyptians contending with little yearly rainfall, the river aided agriculture as it provided a fertile setting from which to prosper.

Monument to Queen Hatshepsut

Luxor Located on the east bank of the Nile River, Luxor is built on the site of ancient Thebes, the former capital of the pharaohs. The city surrounds two ancient monuments, Luxor Temple, built in 1400 BCE, and Karnak Temple. Just west of the city, the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens consists of crypts built into the hills of large expanses of land, chosen specifically by New Kingdom pharaohs as the final resting place for them and their wives. 9

The Spirit of Israel Where east meets west on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, Israel is known by some as ‘the biblical holy land’. Spirituality and culture combine for a city unique to anywhere else in the world, as the pull of modernity and a long-lasting commitment to religion meet for the most sensational of experiences.

Tel Aviv

Sea of Galilee

Tel Aviv

Galilee

Once nicknamed ‘the Mediterranean capital of cool’, this vibrant 24-hour city has it all. An international outlook and cultural scene invite excellent cuisine and world-class nightlife.

Northern Israel is home to the lush, mountainous region of Galilee, known for the Sea of Galilee where, it is believed Jesus walked on water. Witness the Mount of Beatitudes, a small hill recognized as the location from which Jesus performed one of history’s most famous sermons.

World Heritage-listed architecture, like that of the 1930s Bauhaus buildings of the White City, and long beach promenades, provide a rich insight into local history while giving visitors somewhere to relax away from the bustle of city living.

The Sermon on the Mount offers wonderful views of the Sea of Galilee and showcases architecture sure to impress those both familiar and unfamiliar with its biblical connections.

Jerusalem

Jerusalem

10

One of the oldest cities in the world, the Israeli capital has huge religious connotations within the Jewish, Christian and Islamic communities. Recognized as sacred by those with such beliefs, the walled Old City is not to be missed with its many historic spaces. While the historic destination also balances its responsibilities as a vibrant modern hub, with West Jerusalem home to all the modern essentials, like fashionable restaurants, bars and shops.

The Essence of Jordan Located on the east bank of the Jordan River, the country plays a huge role in biblical history and is defined by its ancient monuments, like the Treasury at Petra. The capital, Amman, is thought to be one of the oldest cities in the world, with archaeologists suggesting humans settled as early as the 13th century BC.

The Treasury at Petra

Valley of the Moon

The Treasury at Petra

Wadi Rum

At the main entrance to Petra, the Nabatean capital, stands the Treasury, believed to be over 2,000 years old, its excellent preservation certain to leave a lasting impression. The intricate carvings adorning its facade provide a wonderful insight into Nabatean culture, with the inside compared to that of a film set. Catch it at its most ethereal between 9am and 11am, as the sun hits it directly, or between 5pm and 6pm as the pink glow of the setting sun smothers its intricate structure.

Any experiences you may have had exploring the desert, will not prepare you for what Wadi Rum has to offer. Populated by trekking camels and dotted with Bedouin camps, the ‘Valley of the Moon’ boasts lunar-like crevices and towering rock formations, known to have Aramaic characters inscribed across it. Marvel at the former watering hole of Lawrence of Arabia, named Lawrence’s Spring and kick up the copper sand under foot.

The Dead Sea Bordering Jordan, 1,312 feet below sea level, is the hypersaline Dead Sea. Renowned for its high salt concentration, visitors flock here to experience its natural buoyancy and to cover their skin in the mineral-rich black mud.

Salt Plains, Dead Sea

Unwind as you appreciate the ever-present natural beauty and historic wonder of the hills of Judaea to the west and the Transjordanian plateaus to the east. 11
