MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
VALAREE C. SMITH Chair Hampton County First Steps Board of Trustees
As the outgoing chair, it has my extreme pleasure to have served on the board of directors in the capacity as chairperson. The 2021-2022 fiscal year had its challenges, but we faced them impactfully with great strides. Last year we were proud to highlight the placement of one Little Free Library. This year, through our partnership with Save the Children, we were able to provide six Little Free Libraries throughout our county to increase literacy access. We graciously thank all of our local and state legislators, community members and partners for their role in helping us attain our mission to ensure all children are ready for school success.

Hampton County First Steps Child Care Scholarship program is such a burden lifted off our family! Without it, I would not be able to afford childcare service and go to school.

“
When Ms. Doctor introduced this program to me, I was a little skeptical. However, once the visits began, I knew right away that it would be a great asset to the children and their parents. Being able to receive materials, I was as excited as a child on Christmas Day!”
L. Newton, Family Child Care Provider

Hampton County First Steps trainings are truly worth taking. Each lesson helped me to better understand my role in my young students lives. Their programs prepared me for situations that public school teaching never prepared me for and I’m truly grateful. Their presenters bring every slide to life and gives meaning to them which helps me as a teacher. I will always look for training classes with Hampton County First Steps.

Moving to Hampton County was not a smooth transition. However, when Ms. Powell approached me about the Parents as Teachers program, I knew I needed it but didn’t realize how much. Through the program I have learned so much on how to help my kids before they get ready for school. I really wish there were more people and programs like this. After moving to another county, she made sure to refer me to the First Steps in that county. Ms. Powell does her very best to help others like me.

Hampton County EFNEP would like to thank you for your collaborative efforts in promoting healthier lifestyle options for First Steps parents. Some impacts from this session were creating a new idea for food, making conscious decisions about food, and improving the consumption of foods we eat—all of which we addressed, and I hope to have implemented in our own families. This was an excellent experience and EFNEP looks forward to continue working with you in the future.
