observations from the Director

T

his March we will conduct our annual tour of Seattle Glass Studios. Our tour will begin with a trip up the Seattle Space Needle. What we will witness will be the construction of the new Chihuly Center which will open this year. It will be a profound moment, as the Space Needle was opened in 1962, the same year that Harvey K. Littleton and Dominick Labino began their experimental work with glass marking the beginning of the Studio Glass Movement in America. Chihuly began his glass making career at University of Wisconsin under the direction of Harvey Littleton. Today we see the impact that Chihuly has had on the development of the movement and the education of generations of artists through his influence at his studios in Seattle, RISD and Pilchuck School. We are so grateful to be involved in the Studio Glass Movement as we see our established and emerging artists continue to push the medium of glass as an art form. They continue to take that notion that began in Toledo in 1962 of innovation and creativity. This past quarter we have witnessed an overwhelming appreciation of the art form from collectors; highlighted when we placed a major glass panel by Lino Tagliapietra in the collection of the Chazen Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Our shows featuring Maestro Tagliapietra’s work at SOFA Chicago, Art Miami and Art Palm Beach this past fall and winter were highly successful. Lino continues to push the boundaries of his art with glass, investigating and developing new cane and murrine patterns in his work with larger Panels and Cylinder forms. The upcoming events with our gallery this spring are very exciting. In March we will conduct our tour of Seattle glass studios where we can witness firsthand the advancements being made by artists. At SOFA New York this April, we will be mounting three one person exhibitions of new works by Dan Dailey, Martin Rosol and John Kiley. This will be the first time for our gallery to exhibit Dan Dailey and John Kiley at SOFA. Dan will be a featured speaker on Friday April 20th. This will be our third consecutive exhibition of works by Martin Rosol at SOFA. All three artists will be presenting new works which represent the most up to date developments in their art. This May we will be installing an exciting new Chihuly Chandelier in our gallery. Citron, Amber and Teal Chandelier II, measures 61 x 60 x 52 inches and was first exhibited at the Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art, Nashville, Tennessee. We will also conduct a tour of New England glass studios the weekend of May 26th, which includes visits to the studios of Dan Dailey, Linda MacNeil, Sidney Hutter, Jose Chardiet, Nicole Chesney and Steven Weinberg. A visit is scheduled to Dan Dailey’s solo exhibition at the Fuller Museum in Brockton, where Dan will conduct a private tour of the exhibition.* We look forward to seeing you and celebrating the 50th anniversary together this year. ~ Jim Schantz *Please contact the gallery for any information on our events. Richard Marquis has had an extraordinary influence on the development of contemporary studio glass in America and around the world. Studying at the University of California at Berkeley during the 1960s, he explored ceramics and was introduced to glassblowing. Unsatisfied by the limited techniques practiced in American studio glass at that time, Marquis went to the island of Murano, to observe and work with the masters of a glassblowing tradition acknowledged as the best in the world.

Richard Marquis photo

As an artist, Marquis is admired for his sophisticated understanding of color and form as much as for his humor and willingness to experiment. As a glassblower, he has influenced an entire generation of artists working in glass who aspire to his technical mastery and the originality of his voice

Vladimira Klumpar Her newest sculptures illustrate her interest in the urban landscape. The purity of form remains, but with dotted grids on their surfaces and strong geometric forms that emerge from the surface, the sculptures take on a new immediacy that quietly pulse to the rhythms of city with an internal energy.

shout-outs

making art happen “To see far is one thing: going there is another.” ~ Constantin Brancusi

Commitment.

I know we already know this, but I am going to remind us. A successful, rewarding art career is not achieved by having fun making things, “following your bliss”, or being lucky to go to your studio to create stories, music, sculpture, videos or paintings that you love. And I do not mean financially successful, though that is always a great added bonus, I mean truthfully successful, something that only the creator will know when it is right.... Success is achieved by going to your studio and working every day possible, whether you are confident about what you are working on or not; making mistakes and learning from them. It’s about finding the time and any resources necessary to make art. It’s about doubt, fear and risk. Even the most highly regarded artists have days when they are not sure if what they are doing is any good, and who are wounded by criticism as easily as any of us would be. After years of practice, research, time, physical effort and financial investment the end result might be less rewarding than expected, both for the artist and the public. The committed artist goes back to the studio to try again and again, to find that which is invisible inside which is asking to come out and be shared. This is what makes him or her professional and eventually successful; Commitment and Time. Equally important are innovation, imagination, experimentation and the ability to take a risk. This is what the Studio glass movement is celebrating this year. ~ Kim Saul

A preview of work in progress by Lino Tagliapietra.

This past quarter our gallery has placed a major glass panel by Lino Tagliapietra in the collection of the Chazen Museum of art. Our show, Dalle Mani del Maestro, at SOFA Chicago, Art Miami and Art Palm Beach were highly successful. Maestro Tagliapietra continues to push the boundaries of his art with glass. During the past several months, Lino has been working at Bullseye on a new series of large fused panels inspired by the island of Burano. We look forward to the final results which also include a private commission interpreting cellular studies for one of our clients.

Dan Dailey: Working Method is a retrospective exhibition at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA. The focus is on the various methods and techniques employed by glass artist Dan Dailey over his 40-year career. By pairing each work with the very drawings and models used in planning and production, as well as images and video of Dailey and his team at work, this exhibition endeavors to pull back the curtain on the incredible choreography of technique and vision. Stanwood-based glass mosaic artist Veruska Vagen’s series of portraits are on view this spring. Captured from well-known paintings of the past, ranging from Frans Hals to Vincent Van Gogh, Vagen pays homage and creates likenesses in a process she calls dot de verre, with tiny spheres of colored glass arranged in grids to form the images, then fired in the kiln. The results are incredible for their detail, veracity, and beauty. the solo exhibition, “Somewhere in Time”, runs March - June, Museum of Northwest Art, LaConner, WA in the Benaroya Glass Gallery.

Three easy steps for a better experience with the United Parcel Service 1. Create a free personal account with UPS at www.ups.com 2. Sign up for the free version of UPS My Choice www.ups.com/mychoice 3. Track your packages and set your UPS My Choice preferences to receive notifications via phone, text message or email with an approximate delivery time. UPS now offers residential recipients a new range of options with a service called My Choice. Customers with an online UPS My Choice account can choose to receive customized notifications with their approximate delivery time, waive a signature, and have the package held for pickup at a UPS location. Further actions like rescheduling a home delivery or diverting the shipment to a new delivery address can be taken for a nominal fee. I decided to give the program a try and found that setting up a personal UPS account with My Choice is rather simple and helpful. The customized delivery options are especially useful. You can choose to receive a notification with an approximate delivery time both the day before and the morning of a delivery. You can also choose to receive the notifications by text message, phone and/or email. I was expecting a shipment from California and the day before it was to arrive I received an email saying the package would be delivered between 9 am and 12:45 pm. The next morning I received another email notifying me that the delivery schedule had changed and that my package would arrive between 12:30 and 4:30 pm. Happily, the package arrived at around 3:30 pm. ~James Bill

talk of the town

It is always amazing to first time visitors that our internationally recognized gallery is where it is, a destination for serous glass collectors everywhere, off the beaten path and away from the maddening crowds. Unless you are visiting us on the internet!

Jim Schantz has been represented by Pucker Gallery in Boston for 25 years and is having his 12th exhibit, The Nature of Reflection, through March 15. “Schantz has energized his palette and his brushstrokes but retains his ultimate optimism and is, as always, a champion of nature’s restorative capacity.” Jim exemplifies commitment through his actions. In addition to the supervision every detail of one of the top glass galleries in the country, he has been able to find time to continue on his own path as an artist. We are very proud of the results from his efforts as well as of his example. Click the image to see the catalog, and visit 171 Newbury Street to see the his work in person.
