“For 75 years, glass has been my life and the furnace my home. All my thoughts have been devoted to glass. Its principles have always been the foundation from which to start and its strict rules the structure of my entire life.” ~August 2021

We are honored to present Lino Tagliapietra’s incredible range of artistry with this exhibition. Lino continues to experiment and push the glass medium in his quest to bring to light a new format, fusing his own patterns with his design sensibilities. His passion for expression and creativity is a constant in whatever he chooses to work at. This is best represented by Lino's latest series highlighted in this exhibition catalog. These include the dramatic “Dream of a Long Winter” series, produced during the past two years and the result of his ongoing exploration and commitment to his art. The process of making these panels has been a source of comfort and resilience for Tagliapietra during the pandemic, and he hopes that by sharing the resulting work, viewers will absorb and experience those same feelings of hopefulness and zest for life in the face of their own hardships.

The works in this catalog begin with the most recent panels, and then are arranged by date— beginning with classic work to some of his newest works from 2020— we felt that it’s a nice way to witness the changes in the style, techniques, color, forms, and patterns within the different series. It is our humble offering of a glimpse into Lino’s enormous passion for creativity. Jim Schantz and Kim Saul Schantz Galleries, 2022

It just has to be acknowledged - there are probably no two words more respected and honored in the history of modern sculpture in glass than ‘Lino Tagliapietra’; he is the living bridge, the crucial link between the august history of Venetian glass and the ceaseless wonders of what we today call the modern Studio Glass movement.

It is sometimes interesting how someone works. It depends on what you are looking for. For me, I like to explore, to discover something very old and see it in a new way. Some say, “nothing new under the sun, everything remains the same”. We also say, “everything changes”. I try to be on the side of the change. We don’t invent anything new; we personalize something and it is something that nobody did before. For me, this is the best part. ~Lino Tagliapietra, 2014

When Lino feels like he has squeezed all there is out of the moment, he elegantly eases his way into the next adventure. Despite being loved by many, he is extraordinarily generous with his time and finds time for us all. He gives his heart so willingly that you feel like the most important person in the world when you most need a friend. ~Dave Walters, Artist

Lina and Lino, Sanibel, Florida, 2015 Finding Beauty in the Discovery Life offers us a bounty of experience, and how we adapt to the changes that are inevitable is an ability that allows some to move fluidly and learn from the experience. Adjusting to the situation as it is, not as we wish it to be, is one of the many challenges we have all been faced with at some point in life. Sometimes we need to “dream through a long winter” to find new inspiration. What we keep trying to remember — as we reflect upon the past and look at all the positive experiences — one gift we’ve been given is watching Lino adapt to his experiences and incorporate them into his art over the years; able to be ready for anything and thrive in the opportunities offered by change. It has been inspiring. Witnessing the grace with which he adapted his work through the very challenging “Long Winter” of 20-21, and to retire from the hotshop, his love, his work for over 76 years, to follow other paths has been profound – and much like the way he made work in the hotshop seem effortless, this was most likely not as easy as he makes it appear. Remembering our walks on the beach of Sanibel Island, looking at the birds, the sunset and the shells washed up whole or broken, Lino found reverence and beauty in each moment. Taking time to carefully contemplate and photograph for later reflection, and inspire works which at that time may not have been imaginable. Wishing you inspiration in the year ahead, discovering that which brings you joy. Jim Schantz and Kim Saul

“I would like to be able to personally thank ... all the people I have met during these 75 years, but I realize I would need another 75 years to do so... I would like to share this moment with all the boys and girls, now men and women, who have shared with me a part of this long journey. I truly hope I have taught them all something and, most of all, I hope I have passed down to them even a small part of the passion that I have always felt for glass.” ~Lino Tagliapietra, August, 2021
