The glass art community can certainly credit Dan for being one of the central figures in the Contemporary Glass Movement and bringing glass as a medium into the art world. Dan’s career is marked by his relationship with Dale Chihuly as his first graduate student at RISD, as an independent artist/designer for Crisallerie Daum*, France and as professor of Art at Mass College of Art where he founded the glass program. It was at RISD where Dan first experimented with illuminated sculpture. In 1972, Dan was invited to work at the Venini Factory in Murano, Italy. The industrial experience was to become an integral aspect of Dan’s work. In addition to Daum, he produced designs for Steuben and Fenton Art Glass. Dan received the commission for “Orbit” at the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center in New York City in 1987 and was honored with a solo exhibition at the Renwick in Washington D.C.

Henry Gedzahler wrote in the essay for the Renwick catalog: “Dan Dailey’s achievement is in the seamless marriage he effects in his work in every medium between the idiosyncratic convolutions of his inner landscape and the classic harmony and lucidity of the great tradition in glass, of whom Daum, Nancy and Lalique are giants. Dailey’s work joins in that tradition, but with a contemporary spin that causes the viewer to smile in complicity.” Schantz Galleries is honored to present our first catalog of works by Dan Dailey.

~ Jim Schantz

*Dailey is one of three Americans to have worked with Daum and holds the longest standing relationship of any artist after 32 years of work with the company.

series that Dan ended in 1997 are two of the finest to have been released from the archives. There is amazingly delicate detail, solidity of form and mystique in these two works. ~JS
