Antiquity of Nature
Richard Jolley
Last December we had the opportunity to visit the Studio of Richard Jolley and Tommie Rush in Knoxville, Tennessee. It was a fortuitous visit, as we were among the first to see Richard’s newest experimental work using the Scavo application. Scavo is the ancient technique of manipulating blown glass to replicate excavated archaeological relics originated on the island of Murano. When seeing this application for the first time applied to Richard’s work we were immediately enchanted by these large birds that have a timeless and magical quality. Appealing to our appreciation for what is classic and old, these rough, ancient looking sculptures of birds on pomegranate laden pedestals caught our attention. They seemed to be something from the past yet clearly sculpted by Richard’s hands. It was easy to imagine an entire garden designed with this type of work, and knew we had to share the concept through our gallery. We are honored to be among the first to present this new series by Richard Jolley, “Antiquity of Nature”. Kim Saul and Jim Schantz Spring 2016

“In this new series Antiquity of Nature, I am addressing the enduring qualities of nature and the ability it has to persist and even thrive despite human intervention.” “Nature is a collision of opposites that simultaneously embodies incredible beauty and profound harshness. This is similar to what is seen after the scavo treatment of the new works. The chemicals used attack the glass aggressively, harshly and literally eat away the surface of the glass only to reveal a beautiful yet changed surface or environment.” “Where the excitement lies for me, is living in that moment of possibility and what can happen. The endless generosity of nature constantly reinventing, renewing and providing more is a wonder and deserves respect.”
