The „Ithuba School Project“ in the area of Mzamba in South Africa near Port Edward is located directly on the Wild Coast. The charity foundation was founded in 2010 in order to make it possible for local children to have a place where they can receive a school education. Since then, three classrooms with common areas, buildings for teachers and a kitchen have been built. In the coming spring 2014, the third semester students of the
Master’s Architecture Degree Program are going to build an additional class-
room for the fourth grade pupils. This project includes a classroom of 70 m2, a teacher’s room, a storage room and a surrounding garden. The Austrian students will apply their acquired knowledge together with the local craftsmen using local building techniques. The concept „building
with a local context“ with regionally available mate-
rials is on the one hand prototypically effective for local people and on the other hand it guarantees lower construction costs. The students work on a voluntary basis and will be supported by the University. The construction costs of around € 58,000 for construction materials, transport and tools will be completely covered by sponsors. In return we can offer you advertising space in several publications and on our homepage. Furthermore you will also be mentioned in the
planned exhibition. We hope that you can improve with us the living conditions in South Africa and we are looking forward to your support!
