welcome Welcome Message

It gives us great pleasure to invite you to the cART2013 (Complications of Assisted Reproductive Technology) Conference to be held from 6th to 9th October 2013 at Goa's newest five star deluxe resort – The Radisson Blu Beach Resort, Goa.

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) has changed the lives of infertile couples the world over and given hopes to many. Since its development over 30 years ago, the use of ART is on the increase. However, so far little attention has been paid to the frequency and importance of the complications of this path-breaking technology. Dr Gautam N Allahbadia

Goral Gandhi

This four-day meeting will be a great opportunity for you to share and learn from leading experts who will volunteer their time to discuss the full spectrum of Complications of ART. We have tried our best to offer an amalgam of the highest academic standards with recent advances in the field. The scientific and cultural program of cART2013 has been a true international effort, with inputs from all across the globe. The goal of this conference is to provide not just fertility experts, but also non-fertility specialists an understanding of ART and its complications so as to better manage such situations when they occur in predisposed patients. This consensus conference aims to • Encapsulate the risks for unfavorable outcomes after ART • Arrive at a consensus to support the development of uniform nomenclature for reporting such complications • Define an approach for counseling couples regarding these risks • Establish a research agenda, and • Explore appropriate treatment and prophylaxis options for patients undergoing procedures that are otherwise considered to be 'elective' With its tropical climate, coconut trees and white sand beaches, Goa is also known as the 'Pearl of the Orient'. This is also the party capital of India and boasts of some of the best beaches in the world! We hope that you will find this Congress as fulfilling and rewarding an experience, as the trip to the magnificent kingdom of Goa. This serene, fresh and relaxing environment should provide the perfect framework for an open exchange of ideas and presentation of new research findings. With participation of world experts and eminent scientists in the field, this Congress promises to be a great scientific feast. We look forward to welcoming you to the Radisson Blu Beach Resort, Goa, India this October and we assure you that every one of us will go away a lot richer in knowledge at the end of four days of interactive deliberations of this international super-specialty Conference. Please register early to ensure that you are not disappointed. Warm regards, Gautam N Allahbadia, President Goral Gandhi, Organizing Secretary

She has been an Invited Faculty at several workshops and conferences.

Complications in ART : Fertilization failure in IVF and ICSI There are some factors with the sperm or the oocytes or both, that can lead to complete failed fertilization in IVF. ICSI can circumvent some of these factors but failed fertilizations in ICSI have also been observed. Injection of PLCζ cRNA into oocytes causes oocyte activation similar to that which occurs naturally following fertilization. However, this protein in its pure form still remains elusive. This study aims to address this issue by incorporation of wild type PLCζ reading frame into mammalian cells followed by PLCζ expression and immunobead isolation. The injection of purified PLC ζ along with the sperm into the oocyte at the time of ICSI could pave the way to providing a therapeutic tool to couples with history of fertilization failures.

Dr Rutvij Dalal has done his DNB, DGO (Gold medalist), and FNB – Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine under the National Board of Examinations of 2 years. He is attached as a Consultant at the Department of Reproductive Medicine, Dr Sabine’s hospital & Research Centre. He has four International and six National Publications to his credit. He was awarded the CS Dawn Best Paper FOGSI Prize in AICOG 2011, AICOG 2012 and AICOG 2013. He has received several Best Paper and Poster Prizes in numerous National & International Congresses. He has contributed several chapters in text books and has delivered several Invited Presentations in National Congresses.

A study comparing Cabergoline versus Coasting as a method of preventing OHSS in long protocol cycles Patients at risk of developing OHSS were randomly divided into two groups. For patients in coasting group, gonadotropins were withheld while GnRH-a was maintained. Then 10,000 unit hCG was administrated and oocyte retrieval was performed 36 hours later. In Cabergoline group, patients were administered 0.5mg Cabergoline on day of hCG injection, for 8 days. The mean number of retrieved mature oocytes and embryos were significantly different in both groups. The clinical pregnancy rate and incidence of severe OHSS was similar in both groups. Cabergoline was as effective as coasting in the prevention of early severe OHSS in high risk patients, but yielded more retrieved oocytes.

Sakina Kagalwala, Msc, has been working as an embryologist at Rotunda- The Center for Human Reproduction since 2008. She has obtained a Masters of Biotechnology in Life sciences from University of Mumbai in 2008. She has gained extensive experience in all ART techniques and laboratory management. She is well versed with the latest cutting edge technologies offered at Rotunda. Her research interests are extended embryo culture and vitrification of oocytes and embryos.

ACCU-VIT: a new strategy for managing poor responders Previous trials have shown that neither conventional IVF nor natural cycle IVF is an effective treatment option for poor ovarian responders. The study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of accumulating vitrified embryos in serial minimal stimulation cycles (ACCU-VIT) followed by a frozen embryo transfer for treatment of poor responders as compared to conventional IVF protocols. 55 patients were offered minimal stimulation cycles with vitrification and embryo banking (ACCU-VIT Group) and 85 patients underwent conventional controlled ovarian stimulation for IVF. The inclusion criteria for ACCU-VIT group were patients with at least one previous conventional IVF cycle with poor response (defined as ≤ 4 MII oocytes). The cumulative pregnancy rate was statistically higher in the ACCU–VIT group (41.5%) than the conventional IVF group (22.3%). ACCU-VIT using minimal stimulation and reliable vitrification method is a successful approach to treat poor responders creating a situation similar to normal responders.

Varsha Chipkar, Msc, has been a member of the embryology staff at Rotunda- The Center for Human Reproduction since 2008. She holds a Master's degree in Zoology with specialization in Endocrinology from the University of Mumbai. She is well versed with all ART techniques & Lab management. She actively organizes workshops conducted by Rotunda and is conscientious for live demonstrations and training on Vitrification & Thawing at many centers. Her major interest is female fertility preservation through oocyte and embryo cryopreservation.

A comparison of two different vitrification methods for cryopreservation of mature human oocytes Vitrification is a highly effective method for successful cryopreservation of oocytes. Various media, methods and carrier devices are being used for optimizing the vitrification technique. The study was undertaken to compare the efficacy of two different methods of vitrification for cryopreservation of human oocytes: The Cryotech method and the Cryotop method. A total of 275 mature oocytes were vitrified using cryotech method and 336 mature oocytes using cryotop method. Even though the survival rate of oocytes (97.1% v/s 95.1%, p=NS) in both the groups did not show a statistically significant difference, the embryo development was better in the Cryotech group, as reflected by higher cleavage rate (96.8% v/s 91.9%, p<0.01). This may be attributed to less trauma to the oocytes vitrified and warmed using Cryotech method. The Cryotech method would be very useful in building donor oocyte banks and fertility preservation of cancer patients.

reachinggoa Reaching Goa

Goa is India's smallest state in terms of area and the fourth smallest in terms of population. Located on the west coast of India in the region known as the Konkan, it is bounded by the state of Maharashtra to the north and by Karnataka to the east & south, while the Arabian Sea forms its western coast.

By Air

Panaji (Panjim) is the state's capital.Vasco da Gama (Vasco) is the largest city. The historic city of Margao still exhibits the influence of Portuguese culture. Portuguese merchants first landed in Goa in the 15th century, and annexed it soon after. The Portuguese colony existed for about 450 years (one of the longest held colonial possessions in the world), until it was taken over by India in 1961.

The airport is about 30 kms from the capital city of Panaji and is owned by the Indian Navy. Major airline operators such as Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, Sahara Airlines, Spice Jet, Air Deccan and Kingfisher Airlines have flights carrying passengers and cargo in and out of Goa. Besides these, a number of chartered flights land in Goa from UK and other European countries. The national airline Air India also lands a few international flights, especially from the Gulf countries.

Renowned for its beaches, Goa is visited by hundreds of thousands of international and domestic tourists each year. Goa is also known for its temples and world heritage architecture including the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa, which makes it one of the biggest Christian pilgrimage sites in Asia. Goa also has rich flora and fauna, owing to its location on the Western Ghats range, which is classified as a biodiversity hotspot.

Most of the local airlines have a contact phone number in the city as well as at the airport where the latest information about flight status is always available. It is advisable to book your tickets well in advance. It is also essential to re-confirm your flight timings at least 24 hours before departure.

Goa is well connected by airline services to most major cities in India. All flights, national and international, to and from Goa, operate from the Goa Airport at Dabolim near the port town of Vasco-da-Gama.

Most major international airlines usually have agreements with one or more of their domestic counterparts in India, so if you are arriving from abroad it is possible to book your onward domestic flight at the same time as you pay for your international ticket. By Rail The high-speed Konkan Railway has a daily train which hardly takes around 8-9 hours for the same journey. Other trains between Mumbai and Panaji take typically around 10-12 hours. The rail route also has trains which travel past Mumbai to other northern areas of India right upto Delhi as well as down south to Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. The Konkan Railway has special reservation facility via the internet for foreigners, which allows payment to be made by credit cards. There are also computerized reservation systems in most metros. As the demand for the rail journey is quite high and most trains run filled to capacity, it is highly advisable to reserve the tickets well in advance of your actual journey to Goa. Goa has two major railway stations - Margao and Vasco-da-Gama, both located in the southern area of the state. The South Central Railway terminus is at Vasco-da-Gama and the Konkan Railway terminus is at Margao. Besides the two main stations, the trains usually halt for a few minutes at a number of other smaller stations in Goa. The Konkan Railway has trains which ply between Mumbai and Goa and other destinations. The latest updated schedules for these are available on the official Konkan Railway website. The South Central Railway has one train, the Nizamuddin Goa Express coming in daily in the early morning. This train departs from Delhi and comes to Goa via Pune. By Road Goa is connected with all the major towns in India via the National Highways NH4A, NH17 and NH17A. In most places along the way, the highway roads are in excellent condition and motorable at fairly good speeds. There are bus services operating from Goa to most towns and cities in neighboring states, such as Mumbai, Pune, Belgaum, Hubli, Bangalore, Mangalore etc. at fairly regular intervals throughout the day. These services are operated by the state owned Kadamba Transport Corporation (white and blue buses) as well as the respective transport corporations of the neighboring states. Besides there are numerous private bus operators who provide all kinds of bus services from special to deluxe AC to sleeper coaches along these routes. Most buses tend to arrive in Goa in the early hours of the morning. The departures are in the early afternoon as well as early evening. The buses usually stop along the way for dinner and breakfast at roadside restaurants. Ticket charges vary from Rs 250 to Rs 650, depending upon the distance, the season, the demand and the quality of bus service. A journey to Mumbai (594 km), takes around 12-16 hours. The tickets can be obtained through recognized travel agents or the offices of the state transport corporations. The private buses usually depart from the Fort area and make stops at a number of places around Mumbai before leaving the city. Ensure that you have your seat and the bus registration number, and confirm the exact time and place of departure with the travel agent, as these frequently vary between companies.

Sunday, 6th October 2013 cART 2013 Bollywood Sufi Nite with Soumi Sahi (Hyderabad)

Monday, 7th October 2013 cART 2013 Ghazal Nite with Kultar Singh (Lucknow)

Tuesday, 8th October 2013 Shaan-e-Hindustan Sufi Nite with Adil Hussaini (Hyderabad)

Sufi music is the devotional music of Sufis, inspired by the works of Sufi poets. It's true that Sufi music remaind untouched since its inception but recent hits such as "Ishq Sufiyana", "Jashn-e-Bahara" and "Khuda" have changed that perception and now Sufi has become a new kind of music that is catching the attention of everyone, whether it is the youth or the older generation. Soumi started singing at the age of six. Soumi graduated in Hindustani Classical Music and completed her Masters Degree in Hindustani Classical Music from the Kirana Gharana. She came down to Hyderabad in 2003 and since then has been giving stunning performances. She has performed across India and abroad and got appreciated for her Sufi singing. This band has been performing with Sufi and Bollywood singers since several years, has received great acclaim for its creativity & playfulness and is considered one of Hyderabad's most prominent bands.

Voices touch. Voices move. But only rarely, does a voice surprise. Kultar Singh's voice does all of that. And more. Without doubt, the most striking quality about Kultar Singh's music is his lingering voice that reminds you of none other than the Ghazal legend himself, Jagjit Singh. With modern musical influences, enchanting traditional rhythms and a voice to match, Kultar Singh has successfully transcended cultural boundaries to carve out a name for himself.

The creation of mystic imagery, the establishment of a spiritual dialogue, a vehicle for social and political comment or quite simply, sheer poetic entertainment... Sufi singing has been a musical foundation of emotional integration for almost the last nine hundred years. A window to the values and beliefs of Sufi thinking and philosophy, the art of Adil Hussaini has traveled far and during this colorful journey it has found anchorage at the shrines of great saints and in the voices of great stalwarts like his mentor Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saheb. Adil Husaini is from the Nizamshahi city of Hyderabad with his unmatched ability to express the most emphatic poetry with consummate ease and refined perfection. This is one of the reasons why his unfettered singing never needed to find refuge in the vocal jugglery or presentation gimmicks that have come to be associated with sufi singing today!

Club Tito's at the Radisson Blu Beach Resort In 1971 founder Mr Tito Henry De Souza set up a place to cater to domestic and international tourists visiting Goa. And a trendy chilled out place was born in Baga. It was the time of the hippies and the flower power generation. People from Western Europe and America searching for nirvana or spiritual salvation arrived. The tiny state of Goa put them on the right track. In this environment Tito De Souza decided to settle down, often serving dinner with the roar of the waves in the background and the lights of the traditional balao (a candlelit in a paper lantern) to create the ambience and keep out the dark. Today in the 21st century his sons David and Ricardo De Souza have created a place where people who look for relieving the stress in the modern world can come in and let their hair down. No longer the roar of the waves but retro and Bollywood tracks light up their lives and remove their cares. Instead of the balao the strobe and disco lights flash in the dark creating an ambience for the 21st century gen next searching for their own particular nirvana. Tito's Club was born. Order a Devil's Fizz or go High Voltage (names of cocktails) with the music. On weekends you can see long queues waiting to get in with music and spirits imbibed till the wee hours of the next morning. Resident guests at Dona Sylvia and Radisson who want to dance have free entry on all three nights. All spends within the night-club are billed directly to individuals.
