THE SECRETS OF PARIS Paris is more than the Champs-Élysées, the twinkling Eiffel Tower or the awe-inspiring Louvre Museum. Who hasn’t dreamed of seeing another side of Paris – a more confidential, personal and exciting side? From hidden passageways to well-placed terraces and romantic gardens, Paris harbors hundreds of secrets. Chic restaurants are discreetly tucked away, while a carriage entrance may lead to an unexpectedly peaceful oasis. Paris is full of such unsuspected treasures. Come along with us as we show you what Paris has to offer.
THE SECRET PASSAGEWAYS OF PARIS Plunge into the heart of Paris and look for covered passageways unknown to tourists and even to Parisians. They are great places for a stroll or for quiet contemplation. The oldest, Passage des Panoramas (Paris 2), was built in 1799. Reach it via Boulevard Montmartre, Rue Vivienne or Rue Montmartre and sample one of several excellent, wellknown restaurants. The most recent is the Passage du Prado (Paris 10), which dates to 1785, but was not covered until 1925. The Passage du Caire (Paris 2) is the longest (370 m), while the Passage du Grand-Cerf (Paris 2) is the tallest with three floors under a glass roof that looms 11.8 meters above the ground.
LES ÉTANGS DE COROT Discover absolute charm and discretion just outside Paris. A peaceful haven just 15 minutes from the city, Les Étangs de Corot is a place to relax and restore your energy. Take the time to escape to the water’s edge and immerse yourself in an enchanted landscape with impressionist accents. The Caudalie Vinothérapie Spa and three restaurants make Les Étangs de Corot a destination devoted to wellness, serenity and pleasure, where the only goal is to make each guest feel as if time stood still during their stay.

It would be hard to stumble upon this charming estate in the 19th arrondissement by accident. Only one road and two stairways can take you to the top of the least-known hill in Paris. The breathtaking view of the city – not to mention the supreme calm that reigns here – will make you forget the five solid minutes of climbing. It is a heavenly spot for a marriage proposal… |• Butte Bergeyre, Paris 19 (bordered by Avenue Simon-Bolivar to the south, Avenue Mathurin-Moreau to the north and Rue Manin to the east).

Nestled within the Place des Vosges, the hotel Le Pavillon de la Reine owes its name to Anne of Austria, Queen of France, who, in the 17th century, lived in the wing that separated the residence from today’s Place des Vosges. In 1800, after trying out many other names, the square came to be called Place des Vosges. It is the oldest in Paris and has been home to many famous residents over the centuries, including Georges Simenon, Colette and Victor Hugo. Pierre Hermé Under the stars
Internationally famous pastry chef, unsurpassed creator or, for some, the "Picasso of Pastry": Pierre Hermé is a fascinating man no matter what you call him. We met with the "World’s Best Pastry Chef" at a tasting to present his Christmas collection.
WHO IS PIERRE HERMÉ? Born in Colmar in 1961 to an Alsatian family and descending from four generations of bakers, Pierre Hermé began his career at the age of 14, working under celebrated pastry chef Gaston Lenôtre. He became a master pastry chef and founded the Pierre Hermé Paris shop with Charles Znaty in 1997. Since then, he has invented a world of tastes and sensations based on the pursuit of pleasure. This passionate chef is always ready to challenge himself by exploring new horizons, attempting daring new flavor combinations or reinterpreting his own recipes. HUNDREDS OF TASTES TO DRAW ON Everything happens in his head, where Pierre Hermé compiles hundreds of tastes to help him create. He has a vast internal library dedicated to flavors, notes and taste memories that he cultivates with the sole aim of delighting our taste buds. It is an unusual way to work and think about the craft – but one that enables him to continuously surprise us and win our hearts. Pierre Hermé has invented a universe of tastes, sensations and pleasures. His original approach to his profession – an intuitive, almost magical approach – made him the leader of a revolution in pastry making.

CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
LINK n° 3
..................
The goal at Christmas is to make eyes twinkle and taste buds tingle. Pierre Hermé is planning a sparkling Christmas for us. The theme of the holiday collection by Pierre Hermé is a joyful interpretation of stars, which are the ultimate symbol of festivities and celebrations. Multitudes of gold, red, white and black stars adorn the brand’s creations to light up your winter. High-end pastries available from December 2 to 25 include the "Comète" Yule log (chocolate Viennese biscuit, whipped cream, pure Belize chocolate from Xibun Plantation in Cayo District and nougatine with cocoa nibs), the "Constellation" Yule log (crispy almond biscuit, strawberry jam, orange biscuit, orange marmalade and cream and cardamom-flavored mascarpone cream) and, most spectacularly, the "Hommage to Gaston Lenôtre" Yule log (Breton shortbread with chestnut puree, pear compote, chestnut cake and candied chestnut cream). And don’t miss the irresistible macarons with Persian black lemon. After extended sun exposure, this happy yellow citrus fruit turns black, but its unexpected, intense flavor remains. Discover this obscure, unusual product – it’s delicious! Don’t wait another minute to sample a heavenly array of gourmet treats for mouthwatering bites that will put stars in your eyes. | • www.pierreherme.com

Immerse yourself in Alsace Alsace is a verdant getaway for some and a secret paradise to others. If you are inclined to explore this little known region, you are certain to fall under its spell too. It is an ideal destination for families looking for a quiet haven for a weekend, a week or a lifetime. Everyday life feels different here, full of emotion, culture, street art and culinary delights.
. . . . . . . . . . .TRAVEL . . . . . . . .JOURNAL . . . . . . . . .... ALSACE
ALSACE: URBAN LIVING Alsace has three iconic cities – it’s up to you to choose which one suits you best, sparks your curiosity or appeals to your wanderlust. First comes Strasbourg and its architectural wonders. Next up is Colmar, which is perfect for connoisseurs of tradition and good life. Finally, Mulhouse sparkles with ingenuity, as evidenced in its many museums. So will you pick cosmopolitan, epicurean or artsy?
STRASBOURG, A EUROPEAN BEAUTY
FIND CREATIVITY IN MULHOUSE
Colmar is a city of undeniable pleasures and charms: half-timbered houses, canals, a flower-laden downtown and more. It combines the friendliness of a mediumsized city with some of the most remarkable heritage. Come discover the joys of the city’s historic downtown, which include the famous "Little Venice" and the Unterlinden Museum for culture buffs. Colmar is a must-see if you want to get a glimpse of the sweet life in Alsace. The picturesque half-timbered houses, romantic canals, abundant flowers and maze of cobblestone alleys in Colmar await you in one of Alsace’s prettiest cities. The wealth, representativeness and variety of its architectural heritage make it an essential stop on the Alsace Wine Route. Come taste the region’s delicious know-how for yourself.
As capital of Europe and of Alsace, Strasbourg is a young, dynamic city that will surprise you with its vibrant cultural scene: museums, theaters, opera, concert halls, and festivals are all within easy access. If you love fine dining, monuments or entertainment, consider yourself warned: there is a good chance you’ll fall in love! As with many major European cities, the historic monuments in Strasbourg are recognized at the international level; the city’s Grande Île is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by the branches of the River Ill, the downtown district is home to most of the monuments for which Strasbourg is famous, such as the cathedral, Kammerzell House, Petite France and the covered bridges. You can learn about the inner workings of the European Union institutions whose headquarters are in Strasbourg. The European Parliament offers tours when it is in session and the Council of Europe welcomes visitors to tour the benches where its Parliamentary Assembly sessions are held. You can also admire the buildings and their monumental architecture along the banks of the River Ill.
Mulhouse crackles with inventiveness and pulses with art that stimulates the senses. Artists like Daniel Buren, whose Arches decorate the train and tram lines, have turned Mulhouse into a veritable open-air museum. This special local detail speaks to the city’s penchant for art. Discover the soul of Mulhouse through its tradition of wall paintings. Everyday vignettes, historic frescoes, trompe-l’œil and street art all feature in the murals of Mulhouse, telling its history. Drawing on its rich historical and industrial heritage, France’s version of Manchester burns bright today with a creative, innovative spirit.

... in Alsace WHERE CHRISTMAS REIGNS Each year, Alsace comes to life to pay homage to one of the oldest, most wonderful traditions: Christmas. Town and village craftsmen, associations and residents work together to amaze and delight young and old alike throughout the region. When? From November 25, 2016, to January 6, 2017, Alsace bustles, sharing its best Christmas legends and local flavors in gourmet workshops. Admire
the region’s handiwork and love of the good life as you stroll through the various Christmas markets and exhibits. Christmas markets have been one of the most popular traditions in Alsace for over 500 years. Each year, children and adults come to drink in the lights, music and magical atmosphere: wreaths, lights and window displays spilling over with Christmas candies and cakes, toys, traditional gifts, nativity scenes and santon figurines.
A SPLENDID MONUMENT FOR A CONTEMPORARY ART IMMERSION
Exploring the charms of Paris without making a stop at the Palais de Tokyo would be a mistake, for this contemporary building is a permanent witness to the history of the city and its current artistic stirrings. Built as part of the 1937 Paris International Exposition, it has harbored works as prestigious as unusual. It has been the pride of France since 2012, when it became the biggest contemporary art complex in Europe. The Art Deco architecture of the Palais de Tokyo is a cultural showcase where visitors
can appreciate both artistic riches and sumptuous spaces. Whether you are an art lover in search of rare gems, a casual observer, a person of taste seeking the perfect place to host a prestigious event or a curious passerby uncovering the hidden treasures of Paris, this palace stands up to the highest standards. Do not be put off by its majestic, cold airs. This complex is a living space for today’s artists. Its goal is to give us a new relationship to art

The recent exhibition "Rester Vivant" by Michel Houellebecq (one of the most translated contemporary French authors in the world)
immerses you in the twisted imagination of this French genius, wavering between literature and photography, fact and fiction. The tone of Mika Rottenberg’s solo show is completely different. The young Argentine explores the unique aspects of the relationship between the female body and the absurdity of everyday life. With captivating videos where reality is distorted into fantasy, she questions and fascinates, upsets and breaks free from today’s beauty canons.

with unique exhibits that make it a sort of antimuseum that is always in metamorphosis. The Palais de Tokyo is worthy of its noble name. Walking through the spaces that comprise this singular, polymorphic place is like traveling through the imagination of the artists who have filled it with their creations. Art escapes from the media from which it was prisoner and thrives in the bracing fresh air of a bold, complex era. The art springs up where it is least expected: splattered across a wall or wrapped ingeniously around another. The overall effect envelops the visitor in a liberating spirit. The Center for Contemporary Art is the ambassador of France’s avant-garde and the symbol of art that thumbs its nose at boundaries. Jean de Loisy, President of the Palais de Tokyo, best describes its eloquent contradictions. He calls it a "space [...] that is politically engaged without being dogmatic, that is serious without being arrogant – it is joyful, casual, and profound, all at once. [...] It takes us on a poetic and transgressive journey where one does not reflect on art but rather with art, and in so doing it transforms us."

HIGH-END FACILITIES Khalil Khater, CEO of the Accelis Group, commissioned a complete renovation of the Château de Ferrières, which lies just 20 km outside Paris. Today, some 25 million euros later, the site comprises 12 classrooms, 1,000 m² of kitchens, 400 m² for wine storage and tastings, 2,000 m² of meeting rooms, as well as a cafeteria and library for the 1,500 students expected to eventually attend the campus (the current study body is 100).

A VARIETY OF HIGH-QUALITY CURRICULA
INTERNATIONAL ASPIRATIONS
Ferrières aims to host students receiving initial training, professionals in search of continuous education and amateur chefs who want to up their game through workshops. Renowned instructors (Michelin-starred chefs and "Meilleurs Ouvriers de France") teach oenology, gourmet cooking, management and the intricacies of the hospitality business to students pursuing Bachelor’s degrees and MBAs. The school has also forged ties with prestigious partners such as Cartier, Four Seasons hotels and the Trianon Palace. Ferrières emphasizes hands-on training in a true professional setting: the school has two restaurants (one fine dining venue and one gastropub), a catering service and a four-star hotel. These outlets enable students to assimilate the codes of fine living and acquire high-end skills on the ground. Graduates are fully operational and autonomous as soon as they enter the job market.
The innovative facilities are on par with the aspirations of this new school to become a global leader in training future experts in luxury, hospitality and haute cuisine. Jean-Robert Pitte, Honorary President of École Ferrières, affirms that, "France has a well-established reputation in these fields and can draw on universally acknowledged know-how that will be passed on here." École Ferrières is supporting its international vision with programs in French and in English. Its goal is to recruit 50% of its students abroad. The cozy, refined atmosphere at the château should not overshadow the discipline required for these professions, as well as punctuality, perfectionism, subtlety and attention to detail. The highly selective, competitive admission process serves as a reminder that delivering "French Excellence" is an art that is as demanding as it is enthralling.

3 questions for Najette Sabban: Why do foreign patients seeking medical treatment in France need a middle man? Sometimes, depending on where the patient is from, doctors charge exorbitant rates. At Laetman, we have transparent fees for each service and we negotiate reasonable rates ahead of time with the doctor. There are no surprises and no post-procedure commissions. In addition, each service is prepaid, so there is no ambiguity or misunderstanding. If the patient needs an emergency appointment, we can also shortern the lead time thanks to our special relationships. The patient can relax and let us guide them through the process. What added value do you offer these foreign patients who come to France for medical treatment? First, we have a highly developed network of 2,200 French doctors who are among the best in their respective fields. We are not bought by hospitals, which makes us perfectly unbiased. The patient’s health is our priority. Furthermore, we are discreet and we honor the unique needs of each patient without judgment. We can reserve a whole floor for a patient or secure an appointment at any time of day or night. We take on the task of gathering all the results and notifying families. I personally escort our patients to the operating room and I’m there in the recovery room. Our goal is total peace of mind.

Do you ever turn down certain patients or services? We are careful to choose our patients based on their file. We meet them beforehand – in their home country if needed. We assess whether their request is legitimate and necessary. If it is inauthentic or unhealthy, we decline. We also decline all gifts and tips. France’s reputation depends on the quality of the services we can provide.

EXCELLENCE IN TREATMENT The Institute administers highprecision treatments thanks to a cutting-edge technical platform. The Institute deploys a full range of scientific and technological resources to fight cancer. Its services are backed by ultra-modern interventional imaging and radiotherapy equipment. The center has also developed robot-assisted surgery that enables more reliable, more accurate and less invasive procedures. The da Vinci Xi robot acquired in 2015, for example, makes it possible to remove and reconstruct a cancer-stricken breast in a single surgery with minimal scarring. Similarly, the Cyberknife installed in 2016 delivers high accuracy radiation. This agile, mobile tool targets tumors with extreme precision to protect sensitive nearby organs and tissue.
A WARM WELCOME Gustave Roussy takes pride in approaching its patients as human beings and focusing on their quality of life. Personalized treatment is given to address their physical, psychological and social needs. There are support, wellness and fitness programs to help patients feel comfortable in their bodies after their illness. Finally, its new hospital rooms were designed to meet hotel standards to further enhance patient comfort. INTERNATIONAL REACH Gustave Roussy has been treating foreign patients for 30 years. In 2015, more than 1,300 foreigners traveled to France to receive the best care. In addition, the Institute has made international development a priority by training foreign physicians (especially from Kazakhstan), consulting to improve or build local infrastructures, signing partnerships with hospitals like King Fahad Medical City in Riyadh and the St. Petersburg Oncology Center and more. Better yet, in 2015 it signed an agreement of understanding to open a Gustave Roussy satellite hospital in Kuwait City in collaboration with the Al Mutawa Group, a major player in the Kuwaiti health sector.

Henri Seydoux, selftaught entrepreneur, is the founder and CEO of Parrot, one of the leading companies in drones.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .BUSINESS . . . . . . . . .... PARROT
A French pioneer in high-tech drones In December 2015, the French company Parrot, the world’s secondbiggest name in drones after Chinese firm DJI, raised 300 million euros through an increase in share capital to finance a comprehensive development program. Its objectives are to invest heavily in this sector while offering ever more sophisticated products and to gain market share among consumers and corporations.
That was when the lively Henri Seydoux, a visionary and a geek at heart who is always in search of the next big thing, decided to venture into the world of drones, against the advice of his board of directors. Henri Seydoux fleshed out his concept with Pascal Zunino, a young engineer at the Institut Polytechnique in Grenoble and winner of the innovation contest held by
ONERA (France’s National Bureau for Aerospace Research and Engineering). A lean team was tasked with inventing a device whose design, intuitive control system, in-flight stability and video quality would be unprecedented. PARROT TAKES OFF WITH ITS DRONES Launched in 2010 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the AR Drone – the first that can be controlled via smartphone – made a lot of waves and was a runaway hit. Within barely a year, the little flying machine generated 23.2 million euros in sales. Drones quickly became a social phenomenon. In 2015, Parrot sold nearly one million units around the world with annual sales soaring to 326 million euros. Today the drone business accounts for about 70% of its revenue and has changed the face of the group. Parrot’s drones appeal mainly to the general public, but to businesses as well. Parrot has acquired the start-ups SenseFly, Pix4D, Airinov, Micasense and EOS Innovation, whose expertise and precision sensors can retrieve data for use in farming, mapping and monitoring.

PARROT: THE CHAMPION OF CONNECTED OBJECTS Self-taught Henri Seydoux hails from a large family with entrepreneurship in its veins (Schlumberger); in 1994 his passion for computer coding led him to found Parrot. At the time he sought to market a speechrecognition datebook for the blind. The concept was only a modest success, but the technology was repurposed to develop a hands-free Bluetooth system that could be installed in vehicles. Parrot then became a major player in that market through the end of the 2000s. At the same time, the company was also developing high-end wireless speakers and headphones designed by Philippe Starck. Buoyed by its success, Parrot went public in 2006.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2015 total sales: €326.3 million, of which €183.4 million from drones. (+121% compared to 2014). Net profit: €1.6 million. R&D spending: €57.7 million, or 17.7% of revenue. | • www.parrot.com
INNOVATION IN THE GENES In 2016, Parrot is embarking on a new chapter in its growth, an expensive but salutary change in strategy. Online sales, more points of sale and the introduction of new models are also calculated to capitalize on the sales dynamic. This year has already seen the debuts of Bebop 2, the brand’s best-seller; Mambo and Swing, two ultra agile and playful mini-drones; and Disco, which combines wings with virtual reality glasses for an immersive flight.
1 & 2 • With its aerodynamic design, the Parrot Disco is naturally designed to fly like a plane. It can fly distances of up to 1.24 miles, reach a speed of 49.71 mph and has a 45 min battery life. 3, 4 & 5 • Designed to fly indoors and outdoors, the Parrot Bebop 2 is the first leisure drone weighing less than 500g with a 25 min battery life, and able to fly distances of up to 1.24 miles.
Parrot currently employs a staff of 1,000, of which 650 are research and development engineers. "Technology is where I get my inspiration," says Henri Seydoux. To stand out from its competitors, Parrot is betting on premium drones with easier handling, longer ranges and even better performance. The company also wants to offer a line of cutting edge professional drones. To this end, Parrot is pouring a lot of effort into the simultaneous development of data management software. There are no limits to what technology and drones can accomplish and Parrot intends to explore every bit of that potential.

A French success story The tradition dates to 1947, when Rose Repetto created her first ballet shoes in a workshop just a stone’s throw from the National Opera of Paris. Repetto shoes were immortalised by Bardot and Gainsbourg on their way to becoming staples in every Parisian woman’s wardrobe. Now Repetto has conquered the world. The Repetto brand has remained faithful to its production methods and unsurpassed craftsmanship, making it a French icon.
1 ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WAS ROSE REPETTO… It all began in 1947 when Rose Repetto made ballet shoes for her son Roland Petit, a young dancer. At the same time, she invented the famous "stitch and return" technique to make the shoes more comfortable. In 1959 Rose Repetto opened her first shop in Paris at 22, rue de la Paix. Her customers included the greatest dancers of the day: Rudolf Nureyev, Maurice Béjart, Mikhaïl Baryshnikov and the
Folies Bergère revue. In 1967 Rose Repetto decided to move her production facility to Saint-Médardd’Excideuil in Dorgogne, where one of her friends crafted slippers. The brand’s legendary ballet shoes and ballet flats are still designed by skilled craftsmen in these same workshops. The Dordogne site was renovated in 2011 to add several thousand additional square meters in response to the steady rise in demand. In parallel, the booming brand opened up to the world by establishing shops in Japan,

the United States, Brazil, Germany, Australia and more. From ballet shoes and products for dancers, Repetto has broadened its range to include high-end ready-to-wear garments, elegant accessories and even fragrances. Striking a balance between tradition and heritage, innovation and modernity, the brand stands out thanks to its excellent pedigree, values, history, technical expertise and product quality. On the eve of its 70th birthday, Repetto continues to reinvent itself: this summer it launched Detroit, a line of haute couture shoes crafted by artisans in Italy.

1 • The "Veils" as a poetic vision of the dancer in movement. 2 • The "Swan Lake" display. Laces by Maison Sophie Hallette. 3 & 4 • The "stitch and return" technique is a traditional craftsmanship to which Maison Repetto is still strongly committed.
2 THE REPETTO HALLMARK: "STITCH AND RETURN" This production process invented by Rose Repetto has become a tradition to which the Repetto brand is deeply devoted. This process designed to improve the comfort and flexibility of ballet shoes consists in sewing the sole upside down before flipping it over. Since its genesis, the technique has become the brand’s signature, from pointe shoes to ballet flats. It entails 15 steps, including building the sole, sewing the ankle and reverse sole and a hundred manipulations that result in the birth of a pair of Cendrillon ballet flats. The "stitch and return" technique gave rise to a unique know-how involving several skill sets that are passed along formally at the Repetto School in Dordogne founded in January 2012.

REPETTO’S TWO MOST-FAMOUS STYLES The Cendrillon ballet flat: In 1956, at Brigitte Bardot’s request, Rose Repetto designed a ballet flat as light and pleasing as a ballet shoe, only sexier. The Cendrillon ballet flat in crimson red became an instant classic in the movie And God Created Woman. It went on to be produced in various colors and materials, but always with the same production process and the famous "stitch and return" technique. For a touch of bespoke luxury, since 2011, Repetto has invited its customers to design their own unique version of the Cendrillon by choosing from among 252 shades of lamb skin for the ankle color and personalizing the laces and trim.
1
2
The Zizi: In 1970 Serge Gainsbourg became a brand ambassador by wearing the famous white Zizi with laces. Zizi Jeanmaire, Rose Repetto’s daughter-in-law, was the original inspiration for the model which, like the Cendrillon, uses the "stitch and return" method. The Zizi is a unisex model with the power to transform a look. It can also be customized with charms on the outside or initials on the inside.
3
4 REPETTO REIMAGINED BY DESIGNERS Repetto ballet flats and low-heeled shoes have been reinterpreted through many prestigious collaborations over the last ten years: Issey Miyake, Comme des Garçons, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Proenza Schouler, Olympia Le-Tan and Rei Kawakubo have all fallen in love with the brand’s iconic models and put their own twist on the shoes.

Aysha Al Mudahka,
CEO of Qatar Business Incubation Center (QBIC) What does QBIC represent to you and to Qatar? Qatar Business Incubation Center (QBIC) was founded by two of the country’s leading establishments that support the growth of the private sector, Qatar Development Bank, and the Social Development Center. Although QBIC is only three years old, its tremendous partnerships and achievements managed to make it one of the region’s biggest, most successful mixed-use business incubators. With two specialized incubators, and with 218 entrepreneurs running 61 startups, we’re well on our way of achieving our mission of creating the next QAR 100 million companies in Qatar. To me, QBIC represents the growing Qatari private sector, which without its prosperous entrepreneurs, wouldn’t have been where it is today. I’m proud and honored to be leading an institution that attracts innovation on a daily basis, and most importantly, a center that is endorsing the field of entrepreneurship, making it a viable career option across Qatar and the region; that being said, it represents many positive things to Qatar and myself, but in a nutshell, QBIC represents opportunity. Was it difficult for you as a woman to reach this high position of successful CEO in Qatar? On the contrary! Qatar provides Qatari women with numerous opportunities, and the Qatari workforce consists of a high percentage of women, including those who assume leadership roles. I luckily had a strong support system, both in my professional and personal life, which definitely helped me become the person I am today. Being in the right place at the right time is crucial, as I started my career working for an amazing boss who pushed me to gain as much experience as possible. I found myself partaking in training and development programs, which helped me understand the social and economic fabric of Qatar. With experience, and a trip to New York that sparked my love and recognition of entrepreneurship, I decided to steer my career focus towards women development in the workforce, and innovation and entrepreneurship. I can confidently say that passion, determination and hard work are what got me here. What is the secret of a successful entrepreneur and business leader? I would say the most important element is dedication. At QBIC, we implement and follow the "Lean Startup" methodology, which makes it easier and reduces the risk of a starting entrepreneur. We teach incoming entrepreneurs about the methodology so they do not take the risks by themselves,

To which extent did you contribute towards the development of the private sector? QBIC has contributed significantly to the private sector in just a short timespan. To date, our startups produced a combined revenue figure of QAR 13.8 million. Our incubation team receives an overwhelming number of applications, and we’re working hard and fast to try and accommodate every promising entrepreneur so that no startup idea goes to waste. We have startups in the fields of technology, fashion, education, tourism, and more, making QBIC a key player in transforming Qatar from being an oil and gas reliant country, to becoming a thriving knowledge-based economy. How challenging is it to develop progressive and effective mindset of Qatari companies? I believe the ambition of becoming involved in the entrepreneurship field is a challenging adventure, especially in our region, and is one of the main challenges we face on a daily basis at QBIC. Choosing entrepreneurship as a valid career path is a new concept and not widely comprehended by a lot of segments in society. Entrepreneurs without a business-oriented mindset, or those who have not been involved in family businesses, need to be enlightened about dedicating themselves to their startups on a full-time basis, instead of keeping their day jobs and spending a small portion of their time on side projects. We focus mainly on local businesses, as we want to invest in local talent to create more Qatari business leaders through the center. It is also worth noting that the government has actively taken steps to make it easier for potential entrepreneurs to establish businesses; also a key factor in shifting people’s mindsets when it comes to setting up a business.
What was the best business idea that you helped to turn into a successful tourism product or service that enhance the Qatar tourism experience? One of QBIC’s main partners is the Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA); together, we were able to introduce a specialized incubator for tourism startups called "QBIC Tourism", guided by QTA. When the QBIC Tourism incubator launched earlier this year, we received a large number of applicants introducing new ideas to enhance the tourism sector in the country. We acknowledged that there is a gap that needs to be filled in order to enhance the Qatar tourism experience, especially in the priority sectors of business events, urban and family entertainment, sports and recreation, and culture and heritage products. Thankfully, we’re already seeing prominent tourism startups flourish, such as, Howlak, a mobile application that uses
"Although QBIC is only three years old, its tremendous partnerships and achievements managed to make it one of the region’s biggest, most successful mixed-use business incubators." visual ratings and short opinion polls to help users discover and share what’s good around them, Tartebkum, a holiday organization service, which offers modern trips and adventures for women around the world, and QPR, an IT solutions startup that install digital signage and interactive kiosks to assist tourists across Doha. These are only three out of seven incubated tourism startups that successfully kick-started their businesses in a short timespan. Are the political and military events in the region affecting negatively your work especially on the tourism level? Unfortunately, the Arab world has witnessed a wave of uncertainty over the past few years, due to social and political unrest. Thankfully, the GCC region in specific remained unaffected, and saw an influx in tourism as countries such as Qatar managed to position
themselves as cultural hospitality hubs. Tourism in Qatar more than doubled from 2008 to 2015, and in the first half of 2016 Qatar welcomed 1.4 million tourists. Since our country is gearing up to the World Cup 2022, we’re expecting to accommodate up to 7 million tourists a year; this is where our work with startups proves to be exceptionally significant. If anything, I strongly believe the number of tourism startups will increase in the coming years, meaning that our work is being positively affected. What can we learn, in your opinion, from the experience of France in developing a mature and sustainable tourism sector? There is no doubt that France, one of the oldest and prominent countries of Western Europe, has been a tourism destination ever since the industrial revolution introduced efficient means of transportation! France is famous for its high-end fashion houses, classical art and history museums, monuments and its refined cuisine. As Qatar is a new emerging tourism destination, there is definitely a lot we can learn from France. Many Qataris often visit France and are inspired by its culture and tourist attractions. I think that there is something special about it, and this is why it’s very good at pulling tourists back in, which is definitely something we can learn from. By using our rich cultural heritage, our landmarks and famous sunny beaches, I’m certain Qatar will become a vibrant tourist destination. Creating new and attractive ways for tourists to enjoy shopping, dining and relax, and creating products and services that promote and perpetuate Qatari culture, are among the opportunities at QBIC Tourism, does tourism business in Paris inspire you? Absolutely! Touristic attractions in Paris openly offer local art, culture and history, marveled by tourists from all over the world. The exquisite French cuisine can be found on every street corner, all of which possess their own character and ambience. I was also profoundly impressed by the infrastructure in place that supports French startups in a variety of sectors. We’re definitely going to keep an eye out for collaboration opportunities where Qatari startups can expand their operations into Paris. |• www.qbic.qa

making them more confident and determined to turn their idea into a viable startup. We tell our entrepreneurs to burn their business plans! With this methodology, they divert their time and effort into working on an MVP (Minimum Viable Product), then they try it and test it in the market, generate revenue, and using the generated revenue, start building up slowly. When potential customers validate their service or product, they can assess whether the business is set out to survive or not; if it does succeed, they’re given two years before accelerating to eventually leave the incubator. At all times of incubation, entrepreneurs are offered with free office space, smart financing, legal support, coaching/mentoring and an equity share, meaning that they’re always sheltered, and our role is to take a lot of their risks for them.

Must-Have LUXURY
DOWN COATS by Moncler Moncler was founded in 1952 by the French duvet manufacturers René Ramillon and André Vincent. In 2003, Italian businessman Remo Ruffini took the reins of the brand to steer it toward fashion rather than sports. The result was a luxury brand that opened its first shop in Paris in 2006 at 5, rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The winter 2007 collection marked the debut of the down coat as a fashion statement in its own right. The brand has been booming ever since.
