THESIS PROJECT 5TH Year - Cal Poly Apparently, technology has impacted the way people interact with each other.

A small electronic device which fits in one’s pocket is sufficient to keep people away from their surroundings; it seems that people would rather be living in a virtual reality than experiencing the real environment. I could see a simmilarity between people watching too much television and people who spend too much time on their cell phones - both activities prevent one from a healthy and interactive lifestyle.

Can Architecture be used as to engage people to a healthier and more active lifestyle?

7

TEMPORARY PAVILIONS/ STRUCTURES Temporary pavilions and/or structures offer the user a new experience within their somehow known envrionment which most likely be gone within a short period of time. This makes a more dinamic type of architectural space.

8

ENHANCEMENT TO OUR ALREADY EXISTING ARCHITECTURE By the creation of novel spaces within our environment, one is able to see an opportunity to spend quality time with people in our surroundings.

9

ARCHITECTURE ITSELF Either large or a small architectural space, it seems that open spaces and nature be a good combination as to engage people to interact with each other and the environment.

BUSINESS HOTEL 3rd Year - Cal Poly The program for this project was to design a high rise business hotel with a least forty stories high. The footprint for this building is 14,280 sf. The project is located in Singapore which has a hot and

humid type of weather, and it is located on the equator. The major features within the program include a sky lobby, sky restaurants and bars, shops, indoor and outdoor pool, and large conference centers.

CONCERT CENTER 3rd Year - Cal Poly

The beautiful natural setting in Morro Bay inspired my design concept; as one gets closer to the shoreline in Morro Bay, the Morro Rock captures the view and allures the visitor to go and physically explore it. The boat-shape like structures placed at the edge of the shoreline give the sense as if the buildings are ready to depart to explore the surroundings areas of Morro Bay. The visible structures appear as if the two pieces are holding each other as a couple of dancers who rely on each other to make his/her movements in harmony.

LIBRARY 4th Semester - SWC

I designed a community based public library with multi-purpose space in the San Carlos area located in San Diego, CA. The site is within walking distance of Mission Trails Regional Park and Cowles Mountain where local people exercise and take advantage of the weather. My design was inspired by the shape of the Cowles Mountain as well as the incorporation of a few exterior reading areas on the front face of the building in order to attract non-traditional users.

Entry + Public Restrooms Reader’s Service Area Reference Area Staff Support Area Community Meeting Room + Services Informal Reading + Special Features Area Exterior Reading Area Children’s Area Adult’s and Young Adult’s Reading Area

Place the new library closer to the intersection to claim its presence and to attract non-traditional users.

Targeting three main program spaces; private (administration + community area), entry/info/reference/computers/print/magazines-periodicals, etc., and reading area + bookshelves.

Generate non-conventional building form + exterior reading areas + pedestrian path (connecting to the bus stop) + landscape.

DUPLEX + RESTAURANT + WELDER’S SHOP 3rd Semester - SWC

The client is a married couple who both share their passion for cooking as they also have a friend in common who is a welder. They decided to build a duplex that they can all share, a restaurant, and a welder’s shop in Imperial Beach, CA. The site is located just across the street of the waterfront and pier in Imperial Beach, so outdoor areas as well as large opening and a few walls within the building are convenient to take advantage of natural light and natural ventilation.

Residence 4th Semester - SWC By the middle of the semester, I have learned how to

use many of the tools about Autodesk Revit Architecture software. As our final project, our professor asked us to either use those tools to build a digital model for a project that we might have done in the past or start a new project from blank. I took the challenge, and I designed a two story house.

FURNITURE DESIGN 5th Year - Cal Poly The inspiration of my design was based on the low sitting Japanese

table, which is simple in design and very warm and tactile. Nonetheless, I imagined this table to offer not only one use and/or purpose to the user; I rather wanted this piece of furniture to serve different purposes so that the user would have more freedom as to decide how to interact with it. It can be used as a low-sitting unit as well as it can be used as a traditional-height-coffee table. Anyhow, as I developed the mechanics and structure for the design, I discovered that the table was capable of offering four different heights for the user; therefore, more utility.

42

Even though I imagined the design for the table to be subtle, its structure and mechanics are kind of intricate.

Structure + Mechanics

On its lowest position, the table provides a flat and stable surface when dealing with rough textures such as carpet.
