W H E R E D O PA I N T I N G S T A K E Y O U ? Like a good guide, they can take you places and reveal the most moving visual moments. Over the thirty years that we have been dealing, we have often found ourselves drawn to the Barbizon School because of the many levels of visual and emotional experience that these paintings offer. The original eight Barbizon painters - Corot, Millet, Rousseau, Daubigny, Diaz de la Peña, Dupré, Troyon and Jacque - were the first artists to leave the increasingly urbanized environment of Paris and create finished paintings based on their immediate experience of landscape, sky, light, water, rocks and trees. They worked outdoors, in the sunlight, shade, forests and fields, and showed us views that no painter had completed before. They could express the romantic, such as in Rousseau’s sunrises and sunsets, or the peaceful, as in Corot’s quiet peasant girls in vast fields, or even the sublime as in Courbet’s jagged mountains and cliffs. In their paintings, the landscape was no longer just a setting for human events. It was a place to lose yourself. As a viewer, we invite you to lose yourself for a moment and be transported by this vision of nature revealed. Lisa Schiller Susan Bodo Michelle Montgomery
