Schindler Escalators and Moving Walks
Energy & Environment
Internal Remarks Available for all Schindler escalators and moving walks. For details, see the Quick Reference Guide Q 409 916, Tables 301 to 307.
Function
Solution – Signal Combs Combplates on which the individual comb seg ments are mounted are located at the transition point from the non-moving to the moving parts of the unit. Special combs with a bright yellow color help distracted people or people with impaired vision to see the transition to the moving or nonmoving part of the escalator more clearly.
Advantages – Passengers tend to pay more attention when entering or leaving the unit. – Older persons or persons with poor vision find it easier to recognize the demarcation area between the moving and the fixed part of the escalator or moving walk.
Design
Problem Most passengers step onto an escalator or moving walk without even thinking about it: It is usually an automatic, almost unconscious act. However, stepping from the fixed part of the unit onto the moving part can be tricky: It’s a transition that often presents a serious risk for older passengers or passengers with impaired vision.

Solution – Step/Pallet Gap Lighting Step/pallet gap lighting not only improves passenger safety and comfort, it is also an attractive design ele ment. Green fluorescent tubes are located beneath the steps or pallets, and the result is something to behold – literally.
Advantages – Greater safety for older passengers or passengers with impaired vision when entering or exiting the unit. – Provides an interesting style element, in particular on units in poorly lit environments.
Function
Problem Safety begins the moment the passenger steps onto the escalator or moving walk. Dangerous situations can occur when older persons or users with impaired vision are no longer able to recognize the demarcation area between the moving step or pallet band and the fixed combplate.

Schindler Escalators and Moving Walks
WIF 90424EN-09/2009
Advantages – Total safety: The flashing-light function is espe cially easy to see for visually impaired users. – It is easier for passengers to recognize which part of the escalator or moving walk is moving and which part is not. – An easily retrofitted piece of safety equipment for units in poorly lit environments.
Schindler Escalators and Moving Walks
Energy & Environment
Available in yellow or white.
Function
Solution – LED Comb Lighting Highly visible safety lighting is installed in the entry and exit areas of the escalator or moving walk. A special LED lighting with a flashing function actively indicates to the passenger the transition area from the non-moving to the moving part of the unit.
Internal Remarks Available for all Schindler escalators and moving walks equipped with comb lighting. Also available on request for escalators and moving walks NOT equipped with comb lighting.
Design
Problem The transition between the moving and the nonmoving part of an escalator or moving walk is often hard to see for older passengers or passengers with poor vision. What’s more, inadequate lighting on the unit itself and the presence of illuminated advertising signs from business premises near the escalator or moving walk tend to distract passen gers. As a result, the risk is substantially greater for this passenger group.

Schindler Escalators and Moving Walks
Energy & Environment
Internal Remarks Available in aluminum or stainless steel for all Schindler escalators and moving walks. For details, see the Quick Reference Guide Q 409 916, Tables 407, 408, 410 and 413.
Function
Solution – Floor Covers and Combplates New floor covers and combplate coverings with a black anodized groove base should be used to ensure that passengers once again have a secure foothold when they step onto or off the unit. Your escalator or moving walk landing will look like new again.
Advantages – New floor covers and combplate coverings improve the appearance of your escalator or moving walk. – The new tread grooves on the floor covers and combplates give passengers a better footing.
Design
Problem Escalators and moving walks in shopping centers and large stores are subject to extremely high use, day in and day out. Once the units have been in service for a relatively long time, the grooves in the nonskid covering on the floor covers can be completely worn away. There is then a higher risk of accidents when passengers enter or leave the unit.
Safety
Schindler Modernization Floor Covers and Combplates
Internal Remarks Available in highly durable natural finish for all Schindler escalators and moving walks.
Energy & Environment
Solution – Grip+ Pallets/Steps Grip+ pallets/steps provide excellent foothold for passengers. A special coating on the aluminum pallets/steps provides permanent skid resistance and optimum anti-slip properties.
Advantages – The static and dynamic friction of the pallets/steps is nearly tripled,* ensuring optimum grip on the pallets/steps. – The special coating guarantees long-lasting skid resistance. – The moving walk’s or escalator’s surface looks like new again.
Function
Problem Moving walks and escalators running in high-traffic locations are often exposed to particular loads and operating conditions: Dirt, dust and moisture can build up on the tread surfaces, making them more slippery. As a consequence, there is an increased risk of passengers falling and hurting themselves.

Solution – Handrail Speed Monitor As soon as the handrail speed and the speed of the step/pallet band are no longer in sync (deviation ≥ 15%), the handrail monitor is actuated. If the relevant error persists for more than 5 seconds, the unit is stopped immediately.
WIF 90422EN-09/2009
Advantages – Greater safety for users due to synchronized handrail and step/pallet band speeds. – The handrail speed is continuously synchronized with that of the step/pallet band: - to provide a timely warning to prevent serious consequential damage and - to eliminate the associated downtimes.
Schindler Escalators and Moving Walks
Energy & Environment Function
But this is only true if the steps/pallets and the handrails are properly synchronized. As driven parts become worn, the handrails and the step or pallet band can start to run out of sync. Without a hand rail monitor, it is impossible to continuously check the speed of the handrails. This means less safety and less traveling comfort for your passengers.
Internal Remarks Available for all Schindler escalators and moving walks equipped with MICONIC F 2 (or higher) controllers.
Design
Problem Every escalator and moving walk must be equipped with handrails, which are one of the key safety features on such systems. They give passengers safe and secure support.

Design
Solution – Rubber Safety Collar With Brush A rubber safety collar combined with a hard brush is installed in the handrail entry area. The function of the original collar is not affected.
Advantages – The rubber safety collar helps prevent fingers and objects from getting caught between the handrail and the collar. – Significantly increased protection for children, a high-risk group.
Function
Problem Every handrail on an escalator or moving walk is enclosed by a collar in the entry area to prevent fin gers and objects from getting caught. The small gap that remains between the handrail and the collar still presents a certain risk, especially for children’s inquisitive little hands.

Design
Solution – Self-Resetting Rubber Safety Collar Rubber safety collars are installed at all handrail entry areas to completely enclose the handrail. This reduces the gap at the handrail entries to an absolute minimum.
Advantages – The rubber safety collar offers maximum protec tion against catching. – It shows that you care about children, providing optimum protection for this particular risk group.
Function
Problem One risk area on all escalators and moving walks is the gap between the handrail and the base of the handrail entry. For overly inquisitive children in par ticular, this area presents an increased risk of getting caught in the unit.

Advantages – The risk of wedging is significantly reduced. – The skirt brushes add an extra margin of safety with respect to the skirting.
Schindler Escalators and Moving Walks
Energy & Environment
Internal Remarks Available with black or yellow brushes for all Schindler escalators. For details, see the Quick Reference Guide Q 409 916, Tables 303a-h and 304a-b.
Function
Solution – Skirt Brushes Schindler’s latest safety innovation: special skirt brushes mounted on either side of the step band to cover the gap between the skirt panel and the step band. This significantly reduces the risk of wedging. The soft brush bristles pointing downward also help keep objects out of this gap.
Additional Information – The European escalator industry and EN 115/ ANSI A17.5 recommend the installation of skirt brushes. – Studies in the EU have shown that skirt brushes reduce the risk of wedging.
Design
Problem Safety first – we give top priority to the safety of our customers. Regular safety checks carried out all over the world have shown that the skirt area on escalators, i.e., the space between the fixed skirt panel and the moving step band, is one of the highrisk zones. In this area, escalator users run the risk of getting caught or trapped.

Schindler Modernization Automatic Operation “Stop & Go”
To make sure that passengers do not inadvertently enter the unit from the wrong direction, the direc tion of travel is indicated by direction indicators. Advantages – The operating time of the escalator or moving walk is reduced, cutting energy costs by up to 30%. – Lower material wear results in longer component service life.
WIF 90411EN-09/2009
This Means: – cost savings with lower replacement part costs and – reduced downtimes as fewer repairs are needed.
Schindler Escalators and Moving Walks
Energy & Environment Function
Solution – Automatic Operation “Stop & Go” With this solution, the unit is controlled automati cally by motion sensors located in the escalator landing area – in other words, the unit is not acti vated until a passenger approaches. Light barriers in the skirt panels monitor the presence of passengers on the unit. If no passengers are present, a soft stop is initiated and the unit comes to a standstill.
Internal Remarks Available for all Schindler escalators and moving walks with vertical balustrades and MICONIC F 2 (or higher) controller as well as star-delta starting. Units equipped with direct starting must also be retrofitted to star-delta starting to benefit from the advantages referred to above.
Design
Problem Many escalators and moving walks are still operated according to the principle “on in the morning, off in the evening” – regardless of user frequency. This results in situations where the escalator is running for relatively long periods without actually being used. Unnecessarily high energy costs are the consequence.
Safety

Schindler Modernization Automatic Operation With Crawling Speed
WIF 90430EN-09/2009
Advantages – The unit switches “gently” between crawling and maximum speed. – The operating time (mileage) of the escalator or moving walk is reduced, resulting in a longer service life of the moving parts. – An instantly recognizable direction of travel means added safety when passengers step onto the unit. – Unnecessary energy costs are eliminated, and peak consumption due to starting energy is reduced. – Noise levels are significantly reduced in crawling mode.
Schindler Escalators and Moving Walks
Energy & Environment Function
Solution – Automatic Operation With Crawling Speed The policy of switching older escalators or moving walks on in the morning and off in the evening is now a thing of the past: If the unit is not being used, the intelligent controller simply switches the unit’s speed to crawling (about 20% of maximum speed). The unit remains in crawling mode until the next passenger is detected, at which point it gradually and automatically accelerates back up to maximum speed. An additional safety aspect is that the preset direction of travel is easy to recognize due to the slowly moving step or pallet band on the one hand and the direction indicators on the other hand.
Internal Remarks Available for all Schindler 9000 escalators and mov ing walks equipped with a MICONIC F 3 (or higher) controller as well as star-delta starting. Available only on request for escalators with a step width of 600 mm! Not possible for Schindler escalators with internal drives (SWK, SKS, SKT) due to the reduced maintenance space.
Design
Problem Older units are designed according to the principle of continuous operation. The only control possibility is to switch the unit on or off, regardless of whether or not there are passengers to transport. This means that many units are often running empty, generating higher noise levels and operating uneconomically.
Safety
With Frequency Converter
Schindler Modernization Upgrade “Crawling Speed”
WIF 90429EN-09/2009
Advantages – Reduced wear of driven parts compared with units operated in stop-&-go mode. – Crawling also means added safety whenever pas sengers step onto the escalator or moving walk as they are immediately able to see the direction in which the unit is traveling. – Peak levels of energy consumption are reduced by up to 80%.
Schindler Escalators and Moving Walks
Energy & Environment Function
Solution – Upgrade “Crawling Speed” With this solution, the automatically controlled unit is equipped with a GFU frequency converter that allows the unit to operate at reduced speed when it is not carrying passengers. This “crawling” speed is equivalent to about 20% of maximum speed. When a passenger enters the unit, the escalator or moving walk gradually ramps up to its rated speed. This ac celeration takes place at a constant, adjustable rate, making the traditional stop-&-go operation a thing of the past.
Internal Remarks Available for Schindler escalators and moving walks with step/pallet widths of 800 and 1000 mm equipped with automatic operation and a MICONIC F 3 (or higher) controller. Escalators with a step width of 600 mm on request! Not possible for Schindler escalators with internal drives (SWK, SKS, SKT) due to the reduced mainte nance space.
Design
Problem “Stop & go” refers to escalators and moving walks running in automatic mode (i.e., the unit is acti vated by motion sensors, for example, whenever a passenger approaches). Units with widely varying user frequencies are therefore subject to perma nent stop-&-go operation. These frequent system starts increase the amount of wear and tear on the driven parts.

Solution – ECO Transportation Chains Modern transportation chain technology means that ECO transportation chains can now be used. These chains comply with the very latest ecologi cal guidelines. They are lifetime-lubricated, which means that no more lubrication is required.
WIF 90431EN-09/2009
Advantages – Lower safety risk – less oil-dust-dirt mixture means less of a fire hazard. – No visible oil fouling the user surfaces. – No risk of incorrect lubrication. – The chain’s service life depends exclusively on the operating time and the load. – The amount of lubricant used is greatly reduced, which in turn helps the environment.
Schindler Escalators and Moving Walks
Energy & Environment
For details, see the Quick Reference Guide Q 409 916, Tables 503, 504, 615 and 616.
Function
Internal Remarks Available for all Schindler escalators and moving walks. Even old units can be retrofitted with ECO transportation chains. Considerable maintenance advantage for the maintenance company.
Design
Problem Traditional chain designs require special know-how to ensure that everything runs smoothly on escala tors and moving walks: If the lubrication is insuf ficient, the link areas dry out, and the unit starts to make unpleasant squeaking noises. The chain then runs dry and the service life of many components of the unit as a whole is dramatically reduced. And while too much lubricant is ideal for the link areas, the excess oil combines with dust and fouls the step tread surfaces and the step band. A carelessly dis carded cigarette can greatly increase the risk of fire.
Safety

WIF 90412EN-09/2009
Advantages – No scraping or squeaking noises in the skirt area; the entire unit runs much more quietly. – Dirt build-up on the escalator is minimized. – The Schindler lubrication step can be used on all Schindler escalators equipped with compact steps.
Schindler Escalators and Moving Walks
Energy & Environment
Recommendation 1 lubrication step for rises up to 9 m 2 lubrication steps for rises over 9 m
Function
Solution – Lubrication Step The Schindler lubrication step guarantees that the unit runs quietly. Grease cartridges are installed on both sides of the step instead of the guide pads. One or two lubrication steps are used, depending on the rise of the escalator. Once the lubrication steps are installed, the gliding surfaces are continu ously coated with a lubricant film – eliminating any chance of rubbing noises.
Internal Remarks Available for all Schindler escalators equipped with compact steps.
Design
Problem The quality of an escalator is reflected not just in its design, safety and technology. Two other things are particularly important for users: cleanness and quiet running. A squeaking escalator really creates a negative impression. Preventive actions are taken each time the unit is serviced. However, these mea sures may not be sufficient and irritating squeaking noises may be the result.

Design
Solution – Guide Rail This linear rail guides the step or pallet band with greater precision and over a longer distance. The modernization kit can be retrofitted quickly and easily. The result: the best possible traveling comfort and minimized wear.
Advantage The guide rail greatly improves the unit’s quiet running properties and traveling comfort.
Function
Problem On some escalator and moving walk models, the step or pallet band is guided by rollers in front of the combplate engagement line. On older units in particular, this guiding system based on individual rollers eventually results in irritating knocking noises and increased wear on driven parts. Traveling com fort is noticeably reduced.

Design
Problem Increasing traffic levels and maximum capacities, day in, day out, can take their toll on even the best escalators. In shopping centers and on other com mercial premises in particular, achieving the right ambiance is increasingly important. Escalators are no longer simply a means to transport people; they have become a design element in their own right.
