The new Golf GTI, Golf GTE and Golf GTD Wolfsburg, March 2020. A car becomes an icon when its design DNA and character remain recognisable for decades. It is also important for an icon to provide fresh ideas in order to cope with the challenges of our time. Just like the Golf GTI. For 44 years, Volkswagen has been reinventing this icon of sporty, compact cars while retaining the original concept – generation after generation. The eighth reinterpretation of the Golf GTI is now celebrating its debut. Newly designed and engineered – fully digitalised and networked. A Golf GTI that is fit for the modern era.

Golf GTI, GTD and GTE

Touareg R

The Golf Mk1 from 1976 has long evolved into a vehicle family. This was followed in 1982 by the first Golf GTD with a turbocharged diesel engine, and in 2014 by the first Golf GTE to feature plug-in hybrid drive. And so it stands to reason that a new Golf GTD and a new Golf GTE are celebrating their world premières alongside the new Golf GTI. Three Golf variants, three characters, three efficient and clean drive systems – but one design and specification philosophy.

Dynamic front end The design of the new, sporty Golf models embodies unadulterated charisma. The standard LED headlights are positioned low down and form a striking crossbar in conjunction with the radiator grille. Towards the top of the bonnet a narrow line spans the front end – red in the case of the GTI, blue for the GTE and silver for the GTD.

Golf GTI, GTD and GTE

Touareg R

For the first time, the radiator grille is illuminated with an LED strip as standard. This creates the completely new, unmistakable headlight design of the Golf GTI, GTE and GTD. The new GTI insignia also include the optional fog lights which are now integrated into the air intake grille in an X-shape.

<

7

Striking outline The side section features the eyecatching, standard 17-inch Richmond alloy wheels, unique to the GTI. Red brake calipers. All three models feature wider side skirts sills in black – with a splitter design similar to that found on

Golf GTI, GTD and GTE

Touareg R

ID.3 and ID.4

racing cars. The sills come together to form the front spoiler and the rear diffuser. An individualised spoiler extends the roof line at the very top of the outline. The dominant design element of the side section is the

C-pillar, a characteristic element of all versions of the Golf. It visually propels the vehicle body forwards and transposes the iconic graphics of the original Golf and GTI into the modern era.

<

>

8

Superior rear end The new Golf has a powerful shoulder section and striking rear end design. This also benefits the new, sporty models, which are fitted with LED tail light clusters as standard. The roof spoiler is extended rearwards and merges with the black edging around the rear window, making the Golf GTI, GTE and GTD appear even flatter than the less powerful models.

Golf GTI, GTD and GTE

Touareg R

At the bottom, the sporty diffuser distinguishes the new versions from the other versions of the series. They are also differentiated by the tailpipes of the exhaust systems – the GTI has one tailpipe on the left and one on the right, the GTD has a double tailpipe on the left, and there is no tailpipe in sight on the GTE.

A nod to the past, a nod to the future Although Volkswagen is enhancing the digital and networking capabilities of the eighth-generation Golf – and with it the GTI, GTE and GTD – to an unprecedented extent in order to future-proof the range, many of the original GTI’s insignia can still be found on board. However, the sports steering wheel of yesteryear has been transformed into a new multifunction leather sports steering wheel with touch controls and an optionally integrated Travel Assist button to help

Golf GTI, GTD and GTE

Touareg R

ID.3 and ID.4

the powerful Golf models reach a top speed of 210 km/h while Travel Assist is engaged. The three silver spokes have been retained – in the GTI, the interior of the central spoke has a red finish, while the GTE and GTD have blue and silver finishes respectively. The classic checked pattern of the sports seats is also retained.

10

Fit for the modern age The Innovision Cockpit extends upwards upon opening the doors in the Golf GTI, GTE and GTD. It is a fusion of the topof-the-range version of the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit (digital instruments) and the 10-inch navigation system.

Golf GTI, GTD and GTE

Touareg R

The background lighting, which also comes as standard, bathes the displays and all other illuminated interior areas in a spectrum of 30 configurable colours. The functionality of the standard start/stop button for the drive

GTE with plug-in hybrid The plug-in hybrid drive of the Golf GTE essentially consists of a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine (TSI) with 110 kW (150 PS), the hybrid module with an electric motor (85 kW), a 6-speed DSG and a new lithium-ion battery. The powertrain delivers a maximum power output of 180 kW (245 PS) and a maximum system torque of 400 Nm. Compared with its predecessor, the all-electric range has increased significantly to now around 60 km.

Golf GTI, GTD and GTE

Touareg R

Volkswagen’s engineers have achieved the increase in range by improving the Golf’s aerodynamics and managing to increase the energy content of the battery by 50% to 13 kWh. It can be driven at speeds of up to 130 km/h in all-electric mode.

13

GTD with turbocharged diesel engine The long-distance sports car features a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine (TDI) with an output of 147 kW (200 PS). The Golf GTD engine generates an impressively high maximum torque of 400 Nm. The TDI already delivers this power at very low engine speeds. As with all the turbocharged diesel engines in the new Golf, the GTD’s drive system is linked to two SCR catalytic converters connected in series (SCR = Selective

Wolfsburg, March 2020. Volkswagen is set to add a range-topping new premium model to its flagship Touareg line – the Touareg R. The versatile model’s 340 kW (462 PS) plug-in hybrid drive offers an innovative blend of superlative performance and electric efficiency. When the battery is sufficiently charged, the new SUV always starts in the all-electric E-MODE for zero emissions. The battery capacity is designed so that the Touareg R can cover the average daily commute under electric power. Like all Touareg models, the new R version comes with permanent all-wheel drive (4MOTION) as standard. 4MOTION and the powerful drive system (700 Nm of torque) mean the Touareg R has been homologated

for a maximum trailer weight of 3.5 tonnes. The premium model can cope with this maximum trailer weight even in E-MODE. As the first SUV plug-in hybrid model in the world, the Touareg can also be fitted with the Trailer Assist trailer manoeuvring system. And yet another first: the Touareg will be available with Travel Assist for the first time. The premium model will be the first Volkswagen to boast assisted driving (automatic longitudinal and lateral guidance) up to a speed of 250 km/h.

<

>

17

First R model with plug-in hybrid The new flagship model was designed by the Volkswagen R performance brand, which traditionally develops the sportiest models in the Volkswagen range. The Touareg R represents a paradigm shift – it is the first Volkswagen R model to feature a plug-in hybrid drive. It is also the first time a hybrid model has been the most highly-powered Volkswagen. The extremely well appointed Touareg R, which features the Black Style exterior design package along with 20-inch alloy wheels (Braga) and R-Line interior trim (including Vienna leather with crystal grey stitching), is set to enter the market in the second half of 2020.

Top R dynamic performance As a typical Volkswagen R model, the Touareg R provides ultra-dynamic performance. Like at the touch of a button, the driver just has to press the accelerator to unleash the full output of the electric motor (100 kW/136 PS) and the V6 turbocharged petrol engine (250 kW/340 PS) as required. The two drive systems can then be combined in a boost function to use the vehicle’s dynamic reserves – for instance to overtake another vehicle quickly and safely – and to exploit the full system power of 340 kW (462 PS). The maximum system torque is 700 Nm.

19

All-wheel drive hybrid The hybrid drive of the Touareg R essentially consists of a 2,995 cm3 V6 turbocharged petrol engine, the electric drive motor and a lithium-ion battery (energy capacity of 14.1 kWh) built into the luggage compartment underbody. The power electronics convert the direct current of the battery into alternating current for the electric drive motor. An 8-speed automatic gearbox (with Tiptronic) and a transfer box transmit power to the front and rear axles (4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive). A centre differential

Golf GTI, GTD and GTE

Touareg R

ID.3 and ID.4

lock with asymmetric dynamic torque distribution (Torsen traction) acts as a transfer box for the flow of forces between the front and rear axle. A maximum of 70% of the drive force reaches the front axle and up to 80% reaches the rear axle.

<

>

20

All-electric drive up to 140 km/h When first started, the Touareg R uses only the electric motor if the battery is sufficiently charged. This ensures that the SUV comes as close to zero emissions as possible, especially on short journeys. This hybrid strategy also provides the greatest savings potential. The Touareg R can be driven in all-electric mode at a speed of up to 140 km/h; above this, the V6 TSI is activated automatically – or at any time using kickdown. The maximum speed of the SUV is electronically regulated at 250 km/h.

Fast changeover between E-MODE and Hybrid mode The driver can control the hybrid functions and select the driving profile using the Menu button on the 4MOTION Active Control in the centre console or the corresponding menu in the Infotainment system. Both are clearly arranged next to each other on a shared screen. The available hybrid functions are E-MODE for all-electric driving and Hybrid mode for optimised and automatic interaction between the electric motor and the V6 engine. If the driver touches the E-MODE field when in Hybrid mode, the Touareg R switches to all-electric drive at speeds

Golf GTI, GTD and GTE

Touareg R

ID.3 and ID.4

of up to 140 km/h if the battery is sufficiently charged. Conversely, the vehicle switches to Hybrid mode if the driver touches the Hybrid field when in E-MODE. In Hybrid mode it is also possible to store enough energy in the battery on long journeys to then be able to use the vehicle’s electric power in urban environments at the destination with zero emissions.

Hybrid displays in the Innovision Cockpit

The Innovision Cockpit comes as standard in the Touareg R. It consists of the digital instruments (Digital Cockpit, 12-inch screen) and the Infotainment system screen (Discover Premium, 15-inch TFT touchscreen). The driver can access specific information about the Touareg R and the hybrid functions using the energy flow displays in the Infotainment system (showing

Golf GTI, GTD and GTE

Wolfsburg, March 2020. It is confident and progressive on the road, is always on, and generates zero emissions – in the heart of the world’s most popular market segment. At the Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen grants a glimpse of its first all-electric, compact SUV, the ID.4, as a prototype. The second ID. family model will be launched in Europe in 2020. Just like the compact ID.3 it uses the Group’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB). The name is revealing: the digit 4 identifies the new model as a representative of the compact SUV segment. It is a direct successor of the ID.3, a vehicle with which Volkswagen has opened the third major chapter in its history, following on from the Beetle and Golf. The abbreviation ID. stands for intelligent design, identity and visionary technologies.

27

Plenty of room within the Open Space The ID.4’s aerodynamically refined vehicle exterior perfectly sets the stage for the MEB’s revolutionary architecture: the vehicle’s front end is short, the wheelbase long, giving superlative space on the inside. The driver and passengers in the ID.4 take a seat in the Open Space, the airy and bright vehicle interior.

Golf GTI, GTD and GTE

Touareg R

A host of modular drive components is available for the ID.4 – initially with rear-wheel drive, later also as a powerful, electric all-wheel drive variant. The high-voltage battery is always installed under the passenger cell to guarantee the vehicle’s low centre of gravity and a well balanced

The interior is also revolutionary The long wheelbase of the modular electric drive matrix layout and the very short overhangs result in a strikingly large vehicle interior – the Open Space sets new benchmarks in the compact vehicle category. Digital displays and controls make it easy to get your bearings behind the wheel. The ID. Light – an LED strip in the cockpit – visually communicates with passengers. The ID.3 is almost exclusively operated using touch-sensitive buttons and surfaces or the intelligent Natural Voice control. Wireless App-Connect allows the vehicle to be connected to the user’s smartphone – the We Connect app can then be used to control charging or pre-entry climate control, for example.
