PARKING SPACES There are parking spaces below the castle hill and next to the lift in the parking level on Meisastraße and along the Elbe river with direct access to the castle via the castle park steps on Leipziger Straße.

T
he Albrechtsburg Castle towers high above the town and is of vital importance in many ways. It does not only captivate through its awe-inspiring architecture but also serves as proof of the cultural, financial and political potential of the Wettin landlords. Founded as the production facility for the first European porcelain, the castle left a lasting effect far beyond national boundaries.

In 929, by setting up a wooden fortification on the castle mountain of Misni, Heinrich I laid the foundation stone for its extraordinary history. Later on, in the course of medieval German eastward expansion, the castle mountain quickly turned into an important centre of power. Saxony’s accumulated wealth enabled brothers Ernst and Albrecht of Wettin to start building a
residence in 1471 as an ostentatious symbol for wealth and rule. Germany’s first palace, Albrechtsburg Castle, came into existence under the supervision of master builder Arnold von Westfalen. New forms and techniques were applied here for the first time and set highest standards across Europe. Up to the present, the entire building and fine architectural details have put visitors to awe again and again.

Also the artistic murals that were created in the 19 th century tell impressively of bygone Saxon history. Various episodes from the lives of brothers Ernst and Albrecht of Wettin can be seen. The storming of the castle mountain has been put in an illustrating scene as well as the discovery of the arcanum of porcelain-making. Many documents, pieces of noble porcelain, paintings and other objects on show tell the visitor of more than 500 years of castle history.
