Rochlitz Castle

This castle can tell stories! For more than 1,000 years, it has nestled idyllically in the valley of the Zwickauer Mulde River between Leipzig and Chemnitz, having seen its rise, war and Reformation – today, the majestic building is a true magnet for visitors. One of the most important personalities of the Reformation had her widow’s seat there. Duchess Elisabeth von Rochlitz. Against all odds, she introduced the Reformation in Rochlitz; revolutionary for the conditions back then. Residents of the castle, such as Dedo the Fat or William the One-eyed, left their traces and converted it several times. Discover the secrets of the Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance. Marvel at the imposing cross vaults in the chapel, the historical Black Kitchen, the mighty towers hiding dungeons and the torture chamber and, last but not least, the splendidly restored Princes’ House Parlor. There, you can see impressive manorial rooms, but also the unusual, such as the numerous drawings once scratched into the wall plaster by young princes in their hours of leisure. And, if you want to immerse yourself yet deeper into the eventful history of the castle, just take part in one of the fascinating medieval cooking courses in the Black Kitchen or join our popular guided adventure tours. Take a look at our online event calendar at www.schloesserland-sachsen.de in good time before your visit.

What a view! Having arrived at Gnandstein Castle, climb up the castle keep and enjoy the view over the wonderfully green Kohren Land. Apart from it, the castle’s massive protective walls, the Gatehouse and Tower Yard, battlements, residential buildings and, last but not least, the palace building characterize its defiant appearance. The history of the castle goes back to over 800 years ago when it was founded by loyal minions of the Wettin dynasty of princes. Later, it became the property of the von Einsiedel family. Almost every generation modified it at their discretion. Large parts are open to those who would like to explore it – the rustic medieval palace hall, for example, and the armory or the display depot. A true gem is the late-Gothic chapel with its three artistic altars. Explore Gnandstein Castle Grimma on your own or join one of the guided topical tours on offer at www.schloesserland-sachsen.de.

Tip

The castle owes a true treasure trove to the private donation made by the Gross family: precious furniture and objects as well as medieval paintings can be marveled at. Highlights among those are the works of Dutch schools of painting from the 16th toB 176the 18th centuries. Colditz
