Ways to Help Your Child Make Friends at Camp
BY JEANNINE CINTRON
When I was a kid, my summer camp counselors did not like me very much. I can’t say I blame them; I was always crying! Every day, from the moment I arrived and was separated from the older groups where my siblings were, the waterworks would start. I would beg and plead with anyone who would listen to just let me go be with my brother or sister, where I could safely cling to their familiarity and not be forced to talk to other campers who were total strangers to me. Most of the time the counselors would relent, allowing me to tag along with the older kids (and frequently privy to conversations my 8- or 9-year-old brain was not ready for!).
It seems clear that crippling anxiety stood between me and the lifelong friendships I was supposed to be making at camp, and I only wish my counselors had worked to help me overcome my anxiety instead. But that was many years ago, and camp directors these days place a lot more emphasis on the mental health of their campers. They understand how vital friendships are to a successful summer camp experience overall, and most of the time they are willing to help your child make them.
If your camper struggles with making meaningful friendships, here are some helpful ways to help them expand their circle at camp.
Encourage a positive mindset. A child’s attitude toward making friends plays a big role in their social success. Before camp, talk to them about keeping an open mind, being kind, and embracing the experience. Reassure them that other kids are likely feeling the same way and that friendships can form quickly in a fun and relaxed setting.
You can also practice positive affirmations, such as: “I am friendly and fun to be around” or “Making friends is easy when I am kind and open.”
Role-play social scenarios. For children who struggle with initiating conversations, role-playing can help. Practice introducing themselves, asking questions, and joining group activities. Simple conversation starters like “Hi, my name is Alex! What’s your favorite camp activity?” or “Do you want to play this game together?” can give them confidence to approach new friends.
Pack friendship boosters. Sending kids to camp with small items that encourage connection can help break the ice. Consider packing a deck of cards or small board games, friendship bracelets or group-friendly snacks.
Encourage participation in group activities. The best way to make friends is by getting involved. Encourage your child to join group games, team sports, and cabin activities. Camp counselors are trained to foster friendships, so remind your child to participate in icebreakers and team challenges. If they feel nervous, suggest standing next to a friendly-looking camper and simply joining in. Often, shared experiences create lasting friendships. Teach them to be a good friend. Making
friends isn’t just about finding people to talk to—it’s also about being kind and inclusive. By practicing empathy and kindness, they’ll naturally attract positive friendships. Talk to your child about:
• Listening to others and asking follow-up questions.
• Including kids who seem left out in activities.
ª Respecting different personalities and backgrounds.
Arrange a pre-camp connection. If possible, see if the camp offers a meet-andgreet event or an online group where campers can introduce themselves before arrival. If you know another child attending the same camp, arrange a playdate beforehand so they have a familiar face.
Remind them to be patient. Not every child makes friends instantly, and that’s okay! Friendships take time to grow. Encourage your child to focus on having fun, and reassure them that connections will come naturally. If they feel lonely at first, suggest talking to their counselor, who can help pair them with campers with similar interests.
Checklist for First Time Overnight Camp Parents
BY JESS MICHAELS
Sending your child to overnight camp for the first time is an exciting time for your family and of course, you want it to be a successful summer. Here are some tips on how you can help make your child’s first year away a great one!
Label everything. If it is going in the trunk, it should be labeled! Camp life means there are a bunch of kids all living together and items are sure to be mixed up from time to time. Making sure to label all items —from clothes to shampoo— will help misplaced items get back to your camper.
Leave nice items home. Camp is messy, in the best of ways. Playing sports outside, eating ice cream on a hot day and walking down to the lake after a rainstorm are all part of a day at camp. If your child has a favorite hoodie or pair of sweats and you would like it to come home looking nice, leave it at home. Don’t overpack. You want to make sure your child has all the items on the packing list the camp sent but try not to go overboard on the extras. Campers do not have a ton of space to put their things and lots of the extras never get used. Also, some campers find that too much stuff can be overwhelming when they cannot find the items they need.
Think of positive messages to share (and avoid pickup deals). It is common for your child (and you) to have nerves as camp approaches. Sharing positive messages about camp and not putting your own anxiety on your child is important. Avoid making pick up deals with your child before they leave for camp. If you let your child know you will pick them up if they want to come home, you are sending the message that you do not believe they will be successful at camp.
Send mail. Make sure to write your child throughout the summer. Whether you send a one-way email or a handwritten note, letters from home mean a lot to campers. Try not to write about your amazing vacation or how much fun a younger sibling is having at home. Although unintentional, this type of news can make your child feel like they are missing out. Keep letters light and positive and reassure your child that you know they are having the best time at camp.
Stay calm if you receive a homesick letter. If you get a letter home from your child that they miss home and want to go home, try to stay calm. You can feel helpless when you are so far away from your child but know it is common for children to miss home. Often, kids write during downtime at camp and these moments are often fleeting feelings.
There is a good chance the homesick moment will have passed by the time you get the letter. If the homesickness is really bad and affecting your child’s experience, you would have already heard from the director. Call the camp director to understand how your child is feeling.
Respect camp policies. Each camp has its own policies, from sending packages to technology that is permitted. Please respect these policies. Don’t hide food or phones when packing or buy bunk gifts when they aren’t allowed. If you do, you are sending a message to your child that rules do not apply.
Visiting Day is about quality time. Visiting Day is all about spending time with your child. It’s not about how much food and stuff you can bring or about having your entire extended family there. Let your child guide how the day will go and participate in the things your child wants to share with you.
Don’t obsess over photos. It is hard not to analyze each picture posted of your child, but keep in mind that each photo is just a moment in time. If your child is not smiling, it does not mean they are unhappy at camp. Maybe they were caught off-guard by the photo or participating in a camp activity. If you are worried, contact the director.
Remember that the camp director is your partner this summer and they are there to help guide you through any worries or situations that arise, both before camp and during. The first year of camp is truly special with so many firsts—enjoy the amazing gift of camp you have given your child!

Keeping Kids Safe at Summer Camp
BY NEW YORK FAMILY
If you have been paying attention to the news at all lately, you might be wondering if the safest option for your child at this point is to just keep them home 24/7, possibly even zipped up in a bubble. But even if you could do that, would you really want to deprive them of the unforgettable moments and cherished memories that only summer camp can bring?
While you can never fully guarantee the safety of your child when they are not with you, there are more ways than ever to ensure their safety no matter how far away they are. Here are some important safety tips to keep in mind as you begin the process of selecting the right summer camp for your child.
Research and Visit the Camp
Before enrolling your child, conduct thorough research into potential camps. Look for camps with solid reputations, proper accreditation, and positive reviews from other parents. Taking the time to visit the facility or attend a camp preview event allows you to observe safety measures in action and ask specific questions about emergency protocols, staff training, and health services. With digital tours and virtual open houses now more common than ever, take advantage of these tools to
review facilities and speak directly with camp directors about current safety measures.
Understand the Camp’s Safety Protocols
It is essential to familiarize yourself with the camp’s policies on safety. Inquire about staff-to-camper ratios, background checks, and certifications such as CPR and first aid training. Today’s summer camps have adopted refined safety protocols that address both longstanding concerns and new challenges. Staff training now routinely includes crisis management for severe weather events. Recent summers have seen record heat waves and sudden storms in parts of New York, prompting camps to develop comprehensive evacuation plans and contingency strategies.
Additionally, following the COVID-19 pandemic, many camps continue to maintain enhanced hygiene standards, including regular sanitization of facilities and health screenings at entry points. Confirm that your chosen camp follows these updated guidelines and is prepared to handle both environmental emergencies and health-related incidents.
A reliable camp should have clear evacuation procedures and a designated communication plan to keep parents
informed. Ask specific questions about the camp’s security infrastructure, such as surveillance systems, secure access points, and on-site security personnel. Also, understanding the camp’s approach to water safety, especially if your child will participate in activities at nearby lakes or pools, is extremely important.
Be sure to provide the camp with a comprehensive health profile of your child, including any allergies, medications, or special medical needs, and confirm that the staff is trained to manage these effectively.
Prepare Your Child for the Experience
A smooth transition to camp begins with preparation at home. Engage in open conversations about what your child can expect, from new routines to digital communication tools that many camps now offer. Emphasize the importance of following staff instructions— especially during emergency drills for weather or health incidents. With mental health increasingly recognized as a vital component of overall well-being, many camps have incorporated wellness programs and on-site counselors to help children navigate stress or anxiety. Familiarize your child with these resources so they know to seek help if needed.
Discuss the importance of listening to camp staff and following safety rules, whether during a nature hike in the Adirondacks or a craft session near a bustling urban center in New York City. Preparing your child mentally for new experiences can ease anxiety and empower them to make safe choices.
Stay Connected During Camp
Even though camps are designed to foster independence, many programs now offer regular check-ins or digital updates for parents. Inquire if the camp provides an online portal or scheduled emails detailing daily activities, any incidents, or important announcements. Establish a communication plan so your child knows how to reach you, and ensure that camp staff are aware of your contact details in case of emergencies. For camps in remote areas, confirm that there is reliable cell coverage or alternative communication systems in place. Modern communication tools have transformed how camps interact with families. Many camps now offer real-time updates via mobile apps or
secure online portals, providing daily reports on activities, weather updates, and any security alerts. Establishing a reliable communication plan before camp starts is essential.
Enhanced Security Measures Against Crime
In recent years, concerns about crime have led many camps to bolster their security protocols. Parents are encouraged to ask about the background checks conducted on staff members, as well as any ongoing training programs in conflict resolution and crisis management. Camps that partner with local law enforcement to stay informed about neighborhood safety trends can provide an extra layer of reassurance. Look for facilities with secure perimeters, monitored entrances, and emergency response systems. Understanding these measures will help ensure that your child is in a well-protected environment throughout their camp stay.
Understanding the Impact of Political Influence
In today’s climate, political decisions can
influence everything from funding for youth programs to regulatory oversight of community facilities. Some camps might be affected by recent shifts in local or state policies, which can impact operational guidelines and safety standards. Parents should feel empowered to ask camp administrators how current political developments are being addressed. Whether it’s compliance with new safety regulations or adjustments to budget allocations affecting facility maintenance, understanding these factors can provide peace of mind that the camp is responsive to changes that may affect your child’s well-being.
Trust Your Instincts
Ultimately, trust your instincts as a parent. If a camp does not provide clear and satisfactory answers about their safety measures, or if you feel uneasy during your visit, it may be best to explore other options. A transparent, proactive camp administration that embraces modern challenges is a strong indicator that your child will be well protected throughout their summer experience.

10 Valuable Lessons
I Learned as a Camp Counselor
BY VERED ORNSTEIN
As a kid, I spent eight incredible summers at a sleepaway camp where I made lifelong friends, learned about myself and my community, and grew and matured in countless ways. While being a camper from the age of 9 to 16 was indescribably formative, the most important values, skills, and life lessons I learned came in the years that followed when I became a staff member at the same camp. Through my four years of being a counselor (and one year as a Division Head), I took away some invaluable lessons that have helped guide me through my personal and professional life. Here are the 10 most important things I learned as a summer camp counselor:
1. Leadership skills
Imagine you’re a 17 or 18 year old fresh out of high school, starting to transition into a more independent, adult life. You’re about to go off to college, or maybe you’ll soon start a new job, but it’s possible you’ve never had to make any big decisions for yourself yet. Working as a camp counselor puts you into an environment where taking charge and making decisions is a crucial part of the job. From planning programs, to making sure activities run smoothly, to leading groups of sometimes dozens of kids, developing leadership skills is a natural byproduct of getting the job done.
2. Responsibility
Many teens have been responsible for other people before, perhaps as a babysitter, lifeguard, or some similar job. Camp counseling takes the fundamental parts of childcare and supervising kids to a whole new level, as counselors often care for large groups
of children at once. When parents drop their kids off at camp, they are entrusting their kids’ safety in the hands of staff members. In my experience, that level of responsibility can improve young adults’ confidence and sense of self worth, better preparing them for the responsibilities of adult life.
3. Teamwork
I was always the student in school who hated doing group projects; I almost always preferred to work on things alone and in my own way. I didn’t see the value in working with others when I was certain I could handle it all myself. That facade was quickly broken the first summer I worked as a counselor, realizing that one 17-year-old simply could not attend to the full time needs of the dozen third graders that were under my supervision. I learned early on that summer the importance of collaboration and teamwork with my co counselors and other camp staff, and that asking for help is a sign of strength and maturity, not weakness.
4. Flexibility
As much as camp staffers try hard to provide structure and stick to their schedules and plans, we all know that sometimes life has
other plans. A change in weather can derail the outdoor obstacle course you spent hours setting up. A crying kid can pull you away from whatever task you were trying to work on. Running out of art supplies before craft time is over means you may need to improvise entertainment for the next 20 minutes. No matter what the situation is, a camp counselor must learn to be flexible and ready to switch gears at a moment’s notice, a life skill many adults don’t even learn.
5. Nothing is the end of the world
Going hand-in-hand with being flexible, one of the biggest lessons I take away from every summer spent at camp is that nothing is the end of the world, even though it may feel that way. Especially when you’re spending weeks in a “camp bubble” and taking your counseling responsibilities seriously, the smallest things can feel dire. When you’ve spent all week planning a basketball tournament for the whole camp, and suddenly day-of all the basketballs in camp are missing, it can feel like the end of the world. Working at camp taught me how to take a step back from a situation, see the big picture, and put stressful situations into perspective, a skill I’ve carried over into other aspects of my life.
6. Creativity is key
Before working as a camp counselor, I never would have considered myself to be a particularly creative person. Having to entertain kids of all ages for eight weeks straight every summer definitely showed me that I was wrong. Needing to have fresh and fun programming for every day of the summer pushed me to think outside of the box and really get creative with the activities I was planning. Now, I can easily write a brand new program for a group of campers with just a little brainstorming and imagination.
7. Importance of community
For campers and staff members alike, summer camps are integral in fostering community and meaningful relationships. Most camps are centered around some common identity, be it a shared hobby, geographical area, religion, or personal values. My camp, for example, was a Jewish sleepaway camp, meaning for two months of the year, I was completely immersed in Jewish culture and surrounded by other Jewish people from around the world. As a young
adult struggling to find my place and purpose in the world, camp provided a welcoming environment every summer where I could feel seen and understood by those around me. No matter what community you belong to, camp is an amazing place to learn and reinforce the values that are important to you and your life.
8. Fostering friendships
In addition to building relationships to a community as a whole, summer camps have the power to create and nurture lifelong friendships. Some of my closest and oldest friends are people I met my first year as a camper, and every year that I returned only yielded more and more incomparable friendships. To this day, any time I return for a quick visit in the summertime, I get to develop bonds with new and interesting people in an environment that promotes togetherness and camaraderie, a fact I never take for granted!
9. Working in stressful situations
Let’s be real; taking care of kids is stressful. Even at day camps, where the campers go home at the end of the day, ensuring the
• Only 75 miles north of NYC with transportation available

• Offering 3 and 6 day long camp sessions
• 425 acres featuring: rope courses, zipline, pool, archery, awardwinning dining hall, and more!
safety and wellbeing of dozens of kids (while also keeping them entertained and happy) is a lot of work. Being a counselor gave me tons of skills for coping with stressful situations by teaching me patience, empathy, and quick-thinking problem solving techniques. As I went through college and now in my professional career, the stress management skills I learned at camp have prepared me for life’s challenges and empowered me to manage whatever life may throw at me.
10. Finding the fun in everything
While working at summer camp certainly can be difficult at times, it is also the most fun job a young adult could ask for. Working outdoors, making friends, watching kids be silly, and seeing your campers grow and mature throughout the summer is incredibly rewarding. As a camp counselor, you are the mood setter for every situation- if you’re having fun, the kids will have fun, too. Learning to take the ordinary everyday stuff and turn it into something exciting improves both your own life and the lives of those around you.

Benefits of Camp for Your Child With Special Needs
BY JESS MICHAELS
Attending summer camp can be a beneficial experience for any child. For children with special needs, camp can be a reprieve from some of the struggles of home life and can have a significant impact on a child’s life. These camp directors at special needs summer programs share just a few of the many benefits of camp for a child who has special needs.
Feeling of Belonging
“We find that what is truly transformative for our campers is that, often for the first time, they feel like they are a part of a larger community and that their voice really matters. That feeling of belonging is key for any child as they develop. Nothing can compare to how a child feels when they know that they are accepted for who they are,” says Debbie Sasson, Director of Camp Akeela, a coed overnight camp in Vermont & Wisconsin that helps children improve their social skills. “Our campers often are a minority at their schools and the peers and adults in their life expect them to be different. At the right camp, they can be ok just being themselves. Once they feel that level of acceptance, they are more open to honest and empathic feedback from trusted adults and peers about how they may find more success in the world outside of camp.”
Build Confidence
Jaime Jezek, Director of Camp Sun ‘N Fun, a day and overnight camp for children and adults with special needs in Williamstown, NJ says, “Other camps might have large goals like passing a deep water swim test, but here, a goal might be making just one friend or using a pair of scissors in art. Every achievement is celebrated as special.”
Make Friends
“Most parents come to me and say they want
their child to be included and to make good friends,” comments Elyse Miller, Director of the Inclusion Program at Buckley Day Camp in Roslyn, NY. “Parents will tell me that their child doesn’t have friends at home and if they do, they are children like them. At camp, their friends are typical who just want to be their friends. One of my seven-year-old campers with medical issues invited all her camp friends to her birthday and every child came. Her mom couldn’t believe that everyone wanted to be there for her daughter.” Jezek adds, “Peer and social interactions are key things we hope to provide. A lot of our campers don’t make strong connections when at home. There often isn’t time for things like playdates because their regular care and therapy is time-consuming and takes precedence. We will tell a parent whose child has autism that their son made a friend and they were holding hands. They can’t believe it and said their child doesn’t hold anyone’s hand!”
Independence
Miller often hears from parents before camp about some of the tasks their child can’t do by themselves. “During the summer, I’ll call them and say that he can cut his own food and put on his own socks. There are no issues at all. Camp allows parents to loosen up and allow their children room to grow and to do things on their own.”
Be Themselves
“Many of our campers are mainstreamed at school and there might only be one or two other children with special needs who understand their journey,” states Jezek. “At a school, the wheelchair ramp is often separated from the main entrance but at camp, no accommodations need to be made because the camp environment is ready for them. Everyone is using chubby brushes and chubby markers. It’s good for our campers to know that no one is looking at them differently and that everyone has a place here.”
JEWISH SUMMER CAMPS
Summer camp is more than just a seasonal getaway—it’s a place where lifelong friendships are formed, confidence is built, and traditions are passed down. For Jewish families, finding the right camp can mean immersing their children in a community that strengthens their cultural identity while offering all the fun and adventure of a classic camp experience. Whether it’s a sleepaway camp deep in the woods or a day camp close to home, Jewish camps provide a welcoming environment where kids can explore their heritage, celebrate traditions, and connect with peers who share their values. Day Camp or Overnight Camp?
Which is right for your child?
By Jess Michaels
Choosing to send your child to camp is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. From making new friends to gaining independence to discovering new passions, camp can be an enriching experience for your child. Before you make any camp decisions, you first have to consider whether day or overnight camp is right for your child.
Age is certainly one of the factors to consider when choosing between day and overnight camp. Day camps vary from what age they begin but can start at around two years old while overnight camp is generally for children ages eight and up.
“There is no right age for a child to begin day camp. It’s dependent on the individual and the parent,” said Sam Borek, Owner and Director of Woodmont Day Camp in New City, NY. “When children are ready to broaden their horizons from whichever program they are currently in, they are ready for day camp. Some children thrive from a change in environment. If a child is at the same nursery school year-round, they don’t necessarily have any new challenges. Going to day camp can open up a whole new world of activities and experiences for your child.”
There are many benefits to attending day camp. “One of the most important benefits of sending your child to day camp is the sense of independence your child will feel and learning that they can be cared for by other trusted adults. Going to day camp also makes the transition to school so much easier for children,” explained Mark Transport, Owner and Director of Crestwood Day Camp in Melville, NY. Borek added that swimming is another great reason to start day camp at a young age. “Many day camps have strong swim programs which is an important skill for children to learn early on.”
Transport, who is also a partner in Berkshire Trails Camp and Camp Southwoods, two overnight camps, said there are signs that your child may be ready to move on from day camp to overnight camp. “When your child wants more out of camp, is looking for additional activities at the end of the camp day, or isn’t coming home tired, it’s obvious that your child is ready for more.” Another indication that your child is ready for overnight camp is when
they start to ask about the experience or show interest when you bring up the topic. Adam Weinstein, Executive Director of Berkshire Hills Eisenberg Camp, a Jewish coed overnight camp in Copake, NY said if a child is talking about overnight camp and saying they are ready, it usually means they are. “It’s also ok for parents to be the ones to bring up the idea of overnight camp and expose your child to a camp tour or a virtual tour. This will allow them to know more about what the experience is like. These things will help a child decide whether overnight camp feels right for them.”
Being ready for overnight camp doesn’t mean a child won’t feel nervous about it. “Parents should ask the camp director what they do to make campers more comfortable as camp approaches. We connect new campers to current campers which can help ease nerves, and we also do a new camper weekend for the whole family. This allows families to get to know the staff, see where their bunk will be, and spend time with other new campers which helps everyone feel more confident about starting camp,” said Weinstein. There
are many benefits to overnight camp including independence, confidence-building activities, a break from technology, and learning to live with others. Transport said that another great benefit is that children who go to overnight camp are better prepared for the college experience. “Going away to college is easier because they have already learned how to live away from their parents. The college transition is much easier and less daunting when you have gone to overnight camp.”
It’s important to understand who your child is before making any camp decisions. While overnight camp is an amazing experience, plenty of children remain at day camp for years. Borek said, “Many day camps have programs that evolve as children get older and have strong programs for older campers. These programs can include day trips, unique opportunities at camp, and overnight trips that last a few days which can be a nice hybrid experience for a child not quite ready for overnight camp.”
Whether you are sending your child to day or overnight camp, it’s bound to be a summer full of life-changing experiences for your child!

Your YearRound Guide to Planning for Camp
BY JESS MICHAELS
It can be overwhelming to decide how to pick a summer camp for your child, and it often seems like there is an endless list of things to do before your kids can actually go to camp. How do you pick the right camp? What should you ask the camp director before sending your kids away for the summer? What should you pack your kids for their time at summer camp? Don’t worry: We’ve got all the answers to those questions! Check out our full timeline for the camp countdown, with instructions about what to do each month of the year when it comes to camp planning. Is it time for camp yet?
If you are considering camp, there are ways to research and plan for camp throughout the year. The American Camp Association, New York and New Jersey suggests the following month-by-month timeline with ways to plan for your child’s summer camp experience.
October & November
Attend open houses. Many camps have open houses and fall festivals that provide opportunities to see the camp facilities and get a feel for the camp. It is also a good opportunity for you to get to know the camp director and ask questions about the camp philosophy and program while in the camp setting. Search for camp with your child. Take some time to look over a camp’s website, brochure, and video together. They will give you and your child a sense of what a particular camp is like. Most camp websites have photo slide shows, videos, virtual tours, and maps, which will give you a glimpse of the camp and the camp program. The more involved your child feels in the decision of choosing a camp, the more successful the camp experience will be.
Look for camp early for savings. If you’ve already decided on a camp for your child, don’t wait to register. Many camps offer early-bird discounts. Registering early can
be a real savings for parents—and it ensures your child won’t be shut out of the camp program he wants. Ask the camp if it offers payment plans, which can make it easier to pay for camp. Some camps also allow you to prepay the camp season and will give you a significant discount.
December & January
Talk to camp directors. Speaking with the camp director and asking some key questions is a good way to find out about a camp’s philosophy and see if it matches your own. Get to know the camp director through phone calls, correspondence, and in person. Make sure to give the director an accurate picture of your child and what your specific goals are for her camp experience. Make camp part of holidays. Instead of purchasing another toy for your child, make camp a holiday gift.
Prepare your child for overnights. If you are considering sleepaway camp, schedule sleepovers with friends and relatives and make sure these overnights are successful. If your child feels panicked and needs to come home in the middle of the night, he may not be ready for sleepaway camp.
February & March
Schedule home visits and attend camp fairs. These are both good ways to get to know a
camp director and a camp program. Ask about the camp’s mission statement and what type of child is successful at camp. Camp fairs bring dozens of camps to a community and provide parents the opportunity to speak 1-on-1 with many different directors in one day. Often times, a camp director will come to you for a home visit, which allows you to get to know the director and for the director to get to know your family.
April & May
Share positive messages. As camp approaches, talk to your child about the camp program and the activities she will be participating in. Let your child know you are confident in her ability to have a successful camp experience.
June
Pack together. If your child is going to overnight camp, pack together. Your child will feel more secure if he knows what he is bringing to camp. Use this time talk with your child about how much fun camp is going to be.
Mail a letter to camp. Send a letter to sleepaway camp, so your child has a letter the first day she is at camp. Let her know how much fun she is going to have at camp.
July & August
Camp season is here!

A Mom’s Wish for Her Child’s Camp Experience
BY JESS MICHAELS
When my first daughter was born, like many moms, I started picturing all the milestones she would reach in her life. While some moms dream of their child’s first day of preschool or their wedding day, the most anticipated milestone for me has been the day she would go off to overnight camp for the first time and find her summer home.
Overnight camp was the best thing that ever happened to me and for 12 amazing summers, I spent eight weeks away from my parents as a camper and a counselor. I’ve since held my dream job working with over 600 summer camps.
When the time came for my daughter to have this unique opportunity. I knew her time at camp would differ from mine and I wanted her to create her own camp experience. Still, I offered her these words for her years at camp, and for the rest of her life as well.
• It’s ok for you to feel a bit uneasy on those first few days of camp; this will just make you realize that you can get through hard days
• It’s ok to miss home while still having fun at camp
• Allow your heart and mind to be open to all the new people you are about to meet
• You will learn how to work well with people who are different than you
• You will learn something about yourself that you didn’t know before
• You will gain confidence in your ability to make your own decisions
• You will learn to make your bed (and I do hope you continue at home)
• You will find role models in your counselors and learn that there are other people that can be there for you besides Mom and Dad
• You will always treasure your camp friends and keep them in a special place in your heart
• You will sometimes miss home; but you will cry your eyes out on the last day of camp because you won’t want to leave
• May you always get butterflies in your tummy as you arrive at camp on the first day
• May you belt out your camp’s alma mater song and feel the pride in your camp, from your first summer to singing it in the shower 20 years later
• May you try something new and find a passion for it
• May the sound of certain songs will always take you back to your camp days
• May you discover a true love of nature and have it stay with you forever
• May the smell of a campfire always bring you back to your camp days
• May the word CAMP always bring you happiness
