It’s a Wrap Yes, it’s time to wrap up 2019 and look forward to 2020! It’s hard to believe a full year has passed. But, not so fast there’s plenty to accomplish this month, as any experienced parent knows. And we are here to help you wrap it up. Talking about wrapping - yes, it is time for gift giving. Thankfully our editors have come to the rescue with brilliant suggestions on the best gifts for every kid on your list. Let the kids circle the ones they like best, it might be hard for them to choose. For children the holidays are a lot about getting. As parents it’s important to balance all the getting overload with some fromthe-heart giving. While it might be hard to convince a 5 or 7-year-old that giving is better than getting, you can help them experience the joy of giving by participating in some of the family activities we bring to your attention in our feature, “Family Giving Guide.” Some families enjoy making a tradition of selecting one family giving effort each year. Traditions are certainly what the holidays are about. Try making the DIY holiday crafts

from the owner of Masha Dasha Designs, Melissa Levine. Gathering the kids together and creating something unique is a great bonding experience, and it could become a tradition. Snow flakes are on the way and skiing is a great winter activity for families, so we’ve included the low down on where to go and some tips on gearing up as well. You’ll probably want to squeeze in some seasonal fun so be sure to read our Let’s Go To … article on Westchester’s Winter Wonderland by Andrea Worthington as well as other great events and activities that Marissa Rodriguez has complied in our December Calendar of Events. Here’s hoping you enjoy your end of year celebrations!

Bits & Pieces

Where to CutYour-Own Tree

Holiday Hazards & Safety Tips The hustle and bustle of the holidays can be distracting. Make sure you keep home and child safety in mind this season. Safe Kids Worldwide (safekids. org), a national organization dedicated to protecting kids from unintentional injury, reminds parents to: 1. Hang breakable ornaments at the top of your tree. Hung high they’re out of little ones reach and there’s room for kids to place non-breakable ornaments on the bottom portion of the tree. 2. Keep harmful plants out of reach. Some seasonal holiday plants are poisonous or harmful to children and pets. Mistletoe, holly berries, and poinsettias can be harmful. In case of ingestion contact the Poison Control Center at 800-2221222. 3. Beware of button batteries. Button batteries can be found in numerous holiday items including, greeting cards, small remote controls, and LED illuminated holiday candles. Button batteries look like candy or coins to youngsters and can cause serious injury if swallowed. 4. Put a protective screen in front of your gas fireplace. The glass doors on the front of gas fireplaces have been known to cause serious burns if a child touches them. Place a protective screen in front of the doors for safety. 5. Keep candles and matches out of reach. Lit candles should be at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn. Be sure to store all matches and lighters out of children’s sight and reach.

Start a holiday tradition this year and take the kids to cut down your own Christmas tree! To make sure you pick the right tree be sure to measure the space — height and width — where your Christmas tree will be displayed at home, and take that measuring tape with you. Remember to pack a saw (or check with the location, they may have one you can borrow), Don’t forget gloves andbe sure to dress warm. Call ahead to confirm dates, times and tree availability. Cockburn Farm 1611 Rte. 9, Garrison, N.Y. 845-424-3574 cockburnfarm.com Open on weekends from Nov. 29 to Dec. 24 you can cut your tree from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit the farm store for seasonal food and decorative items. And there are gift giveaways for children. Santa also visits! See their website for the days and hours when you grab a photo with the jolly ol’ man. Even the White House has been known to host a tree from Cockburn Farm. Connecticut Audubon Society H. Smith Richardson Tree Farm 16 Sasco Creek Road, Westport, Conn. 203-623-0646 ctchristmastree.org/CandH/ bacchiocchi.html Stop by this 12-acre tree plantation on

the 75-acre Audubon Sanctuary. There’s flat terrain, easy access and assistance is available. A portion of the proceeds benefits the CT Audubon Conservation and Education Programs. Open the Saturday after Thanksgiving to Dec. 23 on Tuesday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wreaths, roping, swags, tree stands, firewood bundles, and decorations are also available. Family Skiing Gear up for winter fun on the slopes

By Jean Sheff

on’t waste time feeling bad that the pools have closed. Here’s your chance to change gears and introduce your family to the winter sport of skiing. Skiing happens to be an excellent family sport, and living in Westchester County puts you within easy driving distance of a host of fantastic ski mountains the whole family can enjoy.

Of course, most ski mountains you visit these days offer lessons for beginning skiers. Ski areas typically offer a very low-priced, all-day, beginner package that can get kids up and able to cruise the mountain by themselves in almost one day. Most lessons for children begin at age 4 or 5 and group lessons can be especially helpful in learning the basics. By age 7 most children are more than ready to start skiing.

still a good idea for beginners to take some lessons. After getting on the mountain a few times and getting the feel of skiing, a private, one-on-one lesson can vault the beginning skier to the next level. Catamount Mountain in Hillsdale, N.Y., Windham Mountain located Windham, N.Y., and Belleayre Mountain Ski Center in Highmount, N.Y. are also good options once everyone has mastered the bunny slope.

Starting out If you or your children are newcomers to the sport, you’ll want to start off on a smaller mountain with lots of flat, wide bunny trails and a good reputation for introducing kids to skiing. Thunder Ridge, located in Patterson, N.Y., is an ideal starter-mountain. This very popular ski destination for local families offers 30 trails, three chairlifts, and four magic carpets. Located 35 minutes from White Plains and 20 minutes from Danbury, Conn., Thunder Ridge is close enough for families to enroll their child in ski lessons, which are offered for all ages. Snowboarding is also a popular sport here.

Moving on Once every member of the family has conquered the bunny slopes, you’ll want to progress to a mountain that offers varying terrain. Located in the Catskills, Hunter Mountain is comprised of three separate mountains with a wide variety of terrain that offers something for beginners, intermediates, advanced, and expert skiers. There’s a vertical drop of 1,600 feet and 10 chair lifts to 58 trails just waiting to be explored. At the summit, be sure to locate the Rip Van Winkle stone sculpture just a few hundred yards from Upper K-27. As you move up to larger mountains, it’s

Another option If you’d like to really experience skiing with your 3- or 4-year-old try the ParentTot classes at Mohawk Mountain Ski Area. Here professional ski instructors instruct parents in tips and techniques for introducing youngsters to the sport of skiing. Experience the joy of sharing your child’s first bunny hill, ski turn, and chair lift ride. Parents must be an all-terrain mountain skier to participate. Mohawk also offers Snowhawks, a specially designed children’s ski and snowboarding program for kids ages 5-13. Located in Cornwall, Conn., Mohawk is about a 90-minute drive from Westchester

The Benefits of Leasing Kid Ski Equipment Purchasing ski equipment for your children can be an expensive proposition, yet the cost of renting equipment at the ski area can add up too. Many parents today are taking advantage of the leasing programs offered at ski shops such as Pedigree Ski Shop, Inc. that has locations in Bedford Hills, White Plains, and Stamford, Conn. “Economics tops the list when you consider the benefits of leasing ski equipment for kids,” says Pedigree Ski Shop CEO Micheal Fuerst. Pedigree offers a Junior Ski Equipment rental package that starts at $119. “The package includes a pair of skis, boots and

18

Westchester Family | December 2019

poles,” he says. Here’s even better news — should your child grow out of the equipment mid-season, no problem, Pedigree will replace them with a larger size. Plus, each Junior Leasing package comes with discount lift tickets at a variety of ski areas, which when used can pay for the cost of leasing. Leasing new or used ski equipment is available for all levels of skiers from junior to intermediate to high performance and snowboard leasing is also available. Another advantage is fit and safety. “Pedigree’s team of experts will properly fit your child’s equipment,” says Fuerst. A good fit means a safer experience on

the mountain. Leasing also saves time. “You don’t want to be standing on line at the ski rental area wasting time you could be on the mountain — especially on weekends and holidays,” says Fuerst. As for helmets, Fuerst recommends buying each child their own helmet. “Using rental helmets is not a good choice because of hygiene concerns,” says Fuerst. And any prior collision or crash will take a toll on the helmet’s integrity, which impacts safety. “Parents can expect to get two to three years of use from an new adjustable helmet, and that is well worth the investment,” he says. For more information on leasing programs and ski gear see pedigreeskishop.com.

Where to Ski

Hit the slopes this winter at these family-friendly ski areas. Belleayre Mountain Ski Center 181 Galli Curci Road, Highmount, N.Y. 845-254-5600 belleayre.com Butternut 380 State Road, Rte. 23 Great Barrington, Mass. 413-528-2000 skibutternut.com Catamount State Rte. 23 East Hillsdale, N.Y. 518-325-3200 catamountski.com Hunter Mountain 64 Klein Ave., Hunter, N.Y. 518-263-4223 huntermtn.com Jiminy Peak 37 Corey Road, Hancock, Mass. 413-738-5500 jiminypeak.com Mohawk Mountain Ski Area 46 Great Hollow Road, Cornwall, Conn. 860-672-6100 mohawkmtn.com

County and is set on 350 scenic acres of state forest, with 25 trails and seven lifts. It’s interesting to note that Mohawk was opened in the late 1940s by Walt Schoenknecht who later developed Mount Snow in Vermont. Get away Sometimes it’s a good idea to immerse your family in the ski experience by going to a ski resort. Smugglers’ Notch in Vermont is geared to families with children that have all levels of skiing experience. It’s easy to sign the kids up for ski lessons and there’s time to enjoy other activities as well including ice skating, tube sliding, and snowmobile touring. If you’d like a break from the outdoors there’s the FunZone Family Entertainment & Recreation Center that has an arcade, bouncy house, table games, giant slide and indoor pool, and an arts & crafts workshop. Families also appreciate the condominium-style lodging with fully-appointed kitchens and a homey atmosphere. It’s only a short walk or shuttle ride to the trails and the Village Center where you’ll find dining, kids

programs, shopping, and other activities. Once your family is comfortable on the slopes you may want to entertain a skiing weekend or vacation. A drive away in Massachusetts you can visit Butternut in Great Barrington or Jiminy Peak in Hancock. A bit further afield in Vermont consider the familyfriendly Stratton or Okemo Mountain Resorts. Remember to gear up Before you head out to the mountain you need to make sure your family is properly equipped. It’s imperative for everyone to wear a helmet. After the helmet, each member of your skiing family needs snow pants, a good snow jacket, some thermal layers, ski socks, gloves, hat, and goggles. The mountain will take care of the rest. Skiing is a great family activity, and we are lucky here in Westchester County to live within a drive of a number of great mountains offering various levels of difficulty. So whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, there’s no reason not to hit the snow!

raditionally, the holiday season is marked by thoughts of giving. Yet for many children the focus is on getting. Sharing often has to be taught. The good news is giving is a behavior that can be cultivated and celebrated. Let your children know that their actions can make a difference in the lives of their neighbors and then help them take action. Here are a few ways your family might help others this holiday season and in doing so help yourself to some true holiday cheer.

Giving Guide

A good night The Pajama Program, a national nonprofit with roots right here in Westchester, kicked off the start of the holiday season with its annual fundraiser, Good Nights, Westchester! to support children in the community. The nonprofit has a goal to deliver 5,000 good nights to local children who may not have the tools to transform their bedtime. The students at The Ursuline School supported the campaign by hosting a pep rally to collect new pajamas and books for children in the community. Since 2001 Westchester resident Genevieve Piturro, founder of the Pajama Program, has been helping children to get a good night’s sleep. Inspired by a little girl in a shelter who admitted she didn’t know what pajamas were, Piturro has been distributing new pajamas and books throughout the country. The nonprofit program works diligently to get new, warm pajamas and books to the children in need. “The January, February, and March time period when the weather gets colder is especially important,” says Piturro, making the giving of pajamas and books or a financial contribution during the holiday season especially timely. While the organization receives many donations for young kids, Piturro asks us to remember tweens and teens when making our donations. “We serve many older children in Westchester and they would love pajamas and age appropriate books to read. “Pajamas in larger sizes and any Harry Potter book is always welcome,” says Piturro. of Central Westchester tries to help fill this need. Your family can help by donating diapers of all sizes, types, and brands from newborn to toddlers. Even open packages are accepted! Know that the greatest need is for larger sizes (5-6 and pull-ups). Baby wipes are also always in need and are accepted too. All items can be taken to the drop off location at Wayside Cottage, 1039 Post Road in Scarsdale. Junior League Of Central Westchester 1039 Post Road, Scarsdale 914-723-6130 jlcentralwestchester.org

A happy birthday Young children know how important birthdays are, and they enjoy celebrating their own and others. This year, to celebrate their 70th anniversary, Volunteer New York! has implemented a new program called Make a Celebration Box for Youth, Seniors or Veterans. This is how it works: with your family pick a group to support (children, veterans, or seniors), then wrap a cereal box in birthday or colorful non-seasonal wrapping paper. Next, fill the box with a few small items and activities appropriate to your group. Be sure to add a handmade birthday card! Deliver the boxes to Volunteer New York! and they will distribute them to their partner organizations. Contact Patti Colombo at Volunteer New York! for further details on how and when to participate. A full tummy Believe it or not, Westchester County has 200,000 people who are at risk of hunger or are facing food insecurity. Many of them are children, seniors, and the working poor. Food is needed year round, but the holidays are always

a great time to give from the heart. Feeding Westchester can use your time, funds or donations of food to help those in need. In fact, families and children are welcome to volunteer. Feeding Westchester is the heart of a network of more than 300 partners who work to source and distribute food, and other resources, to towns across Westchester helping to ensure that none of our neighbors are hungry. The Feeding Westchester website lists what items are most in need and how you can volunteer. Support the 2019 Feed a Family campaign and every $25 you give provides a complete holiday meal for a family struggling with hunger. Some businesses are stepping up to help too. Feeding Westchester 200 Clearbrook Road, Elmsford 914-923-1100 feedingwestchester.org

A gift of play Many children create elaborate toy wish lists during the holiday season and parents do their best to make their dreams come true. Yet, other children have little chance of getting any gift, never mind a toy. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program collects new unwrapped toys to distribute to needy children. Drop off a toy by Dec. 16 at more than 100 locations in the county. See website for a complete list of donation sites. Many local businesses are helping out by serving as collection sites and making their own donations helping to make every child’s holiday bright. Toys for Tots Westchester County P.O. Box 1207, White Plains t4twestchester.org

A furry friend Children are especially drawn to animals and what better way to teach care and compassion than making a donation of funds or items to a local center. Kids might like to shop with you for toys for the animals or other necessary items. Contact the shelters to find out more about their immediate needs. Homework: How Parents Can Help By Dana Dorfman, Ph.D.

secrets, what should you do? • Encourage expression of emotion: Help identify, label, and express the feeling of frustration; this is the first step in tolerating and managing it. From there you can discuss solutions. • Take a break: Sometimes continuing to tackle the problem head-on will just exacerbate the frustration. • Break it down: If the original problem presents an insurmountable obstacle, try again with just a single step that can be accomplished successfully and built on. • Remember past successes: Remind your child of previous challenges that he has worked through and how he thought that he would never succeed — and then did.

W

hat is the point of homework? Critics argue that it accomplishes little, particularly in the lower and middleschool grades, and may even inhibit learning by requiring children to perform tedious, repetitive exercises that deaden creativity and quash a nascent love of learning. Nevertheless, homework has long been a pillar of the American education system and most educators agree that, at appropriate levels, homework gives children the opportunity to practice and master the concepts learned in the classroom. Parents also largely support homework because it helps them understand and monitor their children’s education and because they see that it can help their kids develop good study habits and learn independently. About that last point: learning independently. Parents recognize that it is important to be involved in their children’s education, that their support and encouragement are important to a child’s achievement and future success. Yet many struggle with the boundary between appropriate engagement and “helping” that goes too far, which defeats the purpose of homework, and robs the child of the crucial opportunity to develop a sense of mastery and competence. Where is that boundary? Most would agree that building the diorama, or actually writing the paper, crosses it. But when a tired, frustrated child can’t quite solve a math problem, how can you help? Should you read and correct a book report? And how do you avoid making homework a daily struggle? (“Have you done it yet?” “No TV until ...”) Here are my tips tips for helping your child learn the most important lessons homework has to teach.

breaking it up into manageable chunks? Understanding each child’s best learning style can help the child reflect on their process, check in with themself and develop work habits, which are skills they can build on throughout life. • Enlist each child’s participation in identifying and equipping a designated place for doing homework. For very young children, that might be the kitchen table with a supportive adult nearby but as they get older, a well-lit desk in a quiet place (no TV or loud music!), a comfortable chair, and a full complement of self-selected supplies can help your student feel a sense of ownership and commitment to the work.

Focus on the process rather than the content What is in your children’s homework is not as important as how they go about it and how you support them. • Decide together what works best for each child and stick (but not too rigidly) to a plan. Ask these questions: Does he concentrate best right after school or will a play period replenish his mental energy? Does she do her best work tackling an assignment and getting it done or

Recognize the role of emotions in learning Scientific research has come a long way in recent decades in understanding how our brains work and how we learn. We know that processing strong emotions affects our ability to acquire and consolidate information and effectively blocks learning. Children who learn to manage and regulate their emotions free up their brains to focus on learning. When a child is feeling overwhelmed by a homework problem that just won’t give up its

Westchester Family | December 2019

Anxiety can sabotage both your child’s best efforts to master homework tasks and your best supportive efforts. How do you remember your own school experience? Did you breeze through? Grind it out? Procrastinate? Blow off assignments? How does your recollection of your own experience line up with your child’s? More important, how does it differ? An inclination — even an unconscious one — to impose expectations on your child based on your experience is a recipe for parental anxiety that will be all too easily transmitted to a child whose brain, temperament, and learning style are distinctly their own. Anxiety about a child’s academic performance, whatever its source, is what often drives parents to hover over a child’s shoulder and lose sight of that hard-to-find boundary between support and “over-helping.” The better able you are to manage your own anxiety, the better able your youngster will be to manage theirs. Remember the goals The point of homework isn’t for your child to get all the answers right or produce the perfect paper; Its most important lesson for parents is that homework helps your child develop “grit” — that combination of passion, perseverance, and resilience that can help them identify and tolerate frustration. It may be an even more important driver of his achievement and success as his innate intellectual gifts. Dana Dorfman, Ph.D., is a psychotherapist in New York City. drdanadorfman.com.

Westchester’s Winter Wonderland By Andrea Worthington

W

estchester is an outdoor familyfriendly haven … from March to October. Once the first frost hits, besides winter sports, it’s hard to find outdoor activities for kids. That’s why we get so excited about Westchester’s Winter Wonderland, celebrating its sixth year at Kensico Dam Plaza. Opening the day after Thanksgiving and running just beyond New Year’s Day, there are plenty of chances to experience more excitement than you thought possible. Here’s what to expect during your visit, and what’s new for 2019. Photo courtesy Westchester Parks Foundation

When to visit Winter Wonderland is open Friday through Sunday for the first three weeks of December and seven days a week between Christmas and New Year’s (with the exception of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day). The last day of the festival is Jan. 4. Doors open at 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. depending on the day, and ample free parking is available in the Kensico Dam paved lot or on the grass just outside the plaza. If you have small children, you’ll want to get there when the doors open for the best parking and shortest lines. We bring our stroller and plenty of hats, gloves, and blankets for the kids to stay toasty. There are many indoor places to warm up, but most attractions are outside, so dress for the weather. Strollers are allowed everywhere except inside the circus tent. Tickets are available online or at the door and are valid for any day of the festival. Kids ages 3 and under are free, and in years past there have been promotions such as reduced entry with donation, character meet-and-greets, and a kidfriendly New Year’s Eve ball drop at 7 p.m. Your ticket covers everything except concessions, shopping, and a few extras such as face painting. New dining choices This year the food options at Winter Wonderland have been revamped. To alleviate long waits for dinner from prior years’ food trucks, there are new grab-and-go stations and concession stands. Beer and wine are also available for purchase. Eat on the go or warm up inside Wegman’s Holiday Dining Tent. Santa and his (live) reindeer! Your ticket includes access to Santa’s North

Experience the wonder of light and the joy of outdoor holiday fun at Westchester’s Winter Wonderland in Valhalla. Pole. You can head inside the heated tent (make sure you wear removeable layers as the wait can be hot) and pose for DIY pics. Since there’s no professional company shooting the photos, there are no costly print packages, but if you want to capture your entire family, you’ll have to make friends with the people in line behind you. You’ll also find Santa’s Post Box, so bring your wish list to drop in the mail. This year Santa brought his reindeer! After meeting Santa, you’ll want to head outside to the North Pole to view the live reindeer. Holiday lights Check out the 40-foot lighted Christmas tree and Lights of Wonder, a holiday light show set to music that features displays of angels, elves, and other holiday themes. The show runs about 10 minutes and is a great place for the kids to take a break in the stroller with a blanket and snack.

Hit the ice or hop in the big top tent It’s easy to hit the ice skating rink because admission includes skate rentals in almost every size. If you are too cold to stay outside, warm up in the holiday circus tent for a 30-minute performance of balancing, motorcycle riding, and other daredevil acts. No strollers are allowed inside, so you might want to skip this attraction if your child can’t sit still for the entire show. Our verdict Even though Winter Wonderland is quaint compared to a night out at a traditional theme park, this event gets better every year. If your family likes to bundle up and get in the holiday spirit, Winter Wonderland is a must-do. Andrea Worthington owns BabyGotChat.com, a website for Westchester parents featuring resources, advice, and events for young children. When you go …

Midway fun FUNderland Village includes eight midway attractions including a carousel, Ferris wheel, slide, and winter hayride. Unlimited rides are included with the cost of admission, but they’re all outside and made of metal. Bring gloves for the carousel or little hands won’t want to hang on. Fleece-lined pants will combat frigid ride seats. If rides aren’t your child’s thing, there’s a great playground near the restroom building. Restrooms are indoors, but there’s no changing station at the event.

Westchester’s Winter Wonderland Kensico Dam Plaza One Bronx River Parkway, Valhalla 914-231-4600 wwinterwonderland.com Hours: Open evenings Friday through Sunday between Nov. 29 and Dec. 22, and every evening from Dec. 23 to Jan. 4. Closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. See website for daily hours. Cost: $20 per person for unlimited access to entertainment, rides, and events. Children ages 3 and under are free.

DIY Holiday Gifts The crafty way to reduce, reuse, and recycle By Melissa Levine

W

elcome to Masha Dasha Designs where “art supplies become the art”. What started as a creative gift for my daughter’s pre-school teacher’s holiday gift has become an arts and crafts business! When my first gift was a big success, word-of-mouth spread and orders for other custom pieces began rolling in and so began Masha Dasha designs. This holiday season gather the kids around and help them make their own holiday gifts – for teachers, friends and family members. I love making these items for the holidays and you can easily make them too. There’s nothing like “homemade for the holidays!” Melissa Levine founded Masha Dasha Designs, in 2012. She creates one of a kind, handcrafted pieces using art supplies and recycled materials such as crayons, pencils, buttons and wine corks. She stocks some ready-made pieces, which can be found on www.etsy.com/ shop/mashadashadesign. For more information see mashadashadesigns.com.

Custom Shaped Multicolored Crayons These homemade crayons make excellent holiday gifts, stocking stuffers, or in another season, birthday party favors.

Masha Dasha Designs

Supplies: • Silicone mold in the shape of your choice. (Jewish star molds purchased on Amazon shown here). • Broken, used, or old crayons Directions: 1. Let your kids help you take the wrappers off the crayons. A tip — for stubborn wrappers let the crayons soak in warm water for a few minutes, then they should peal right off. 2. Break up the crayons and arrange them in the molds. The more colors

Bits and pieces of melted crayon in a Jewish star silicone look like this when you pop them out! per crayon mold the better. 3. Place filled silicone mold on a cookie sheet and melt the crayons in a low (225 degree) oven for approximately 10 minutes. A tip — keep a close eye on the heating process, you want to melt the wax not bake it. 4. Let the molds cool and then pop the crayon out.
