0 6 Roots Playground and Park Public Interest Design Proposal
Catholic University Spring 2021 Instructor: Georgeanne Matthews Program: Community and Public Interest Design Location: Newtown Square, PA Software: Sketchup, Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft
Concept: Roots Playground and Park is part of a Public Interest Design Course, during which students chose a site to analysis and develope based on communal input. As a needed social and active oasis for the e ntire community of Liseter, Newtown Square. this child’ park and flexible marketplace design aligns with the concept of Roots- reaching out to the neighborhood to bring the community together in nature. The coffee shop is an adaptive reuse of the existing barnhouse (originally used as a construction storage area). Pergolas are added to the east picnics and the weekend marketplace while the western park contains all-natural equipment such as long benches, a rock climbing apparatus, a rope climbing wall as well as a woodchip ground. In all, Roots Park is a place that seeks to invite the community to enjoy and appreciate nature together.

CONCEPT
In addition to integrating the context of Columbia Heights, Rhythms of Life expresses the individual’s needs and desires by creating spaces for various types of visitors. Promoting cultural involvement and intergenerational relationships, Rhythms of Life gives the neighborhood a place meant for the entire community. The various rhythms of day-to-day living are addressed by providing a series of active, passive, and liminal spaces. Active spaces encourage interactions among residents while also promoting physical activity. Passive spaces consider those individuals who prefer to live a quieter life. Liminal spaces are the places in between; allowing visitors to choose how they occupy a space. I specifically drew all form diagrams, designed the synergy diagram, wall sections and construction diagram. Most other diagrams are collaborative.

CONCEPT
During this four week intensive studio entitled, “Ordinary, Except” my partner and I explored the site of Cambridge, MA to draw out the unique characteristics; particular that of gathering and appreciation of the arts. This artist’s residency balances the required programming of a private artist residency, with the communities need for gathering both outdoors for Allowing for a degree of shared community space for advocacy and public displays with ties to the heritage. I specifically drew all drawings featured within these pages and collaborated with my partner doe design thinking ad concept proposals.
