University Scholars Program (USP) HSS 111 Spring 2012 Scholars Forum Monday: 2:30-4:20 PM Witherspoon Campus Cinema The following is your Forum schedule for the Spring 2012 semester. Please take time to review it carefully, and refer back to it periodically throughout the semester. Be sure to review the HSS 111 Sign-up Procedures and Frequently Asked Questions sections found at the end of this schedule very carefully. If you have any questions, please visit the USP office (102 Sullivan Hall) Monday-Friday between 8 am and 5 pm. You may also contact us by phone (515-2353) or email (university_scholars@ncsu.edu). This syllabus and other USP documents are available online at http://www.ncsu.edu/univ_scholars/ Please note that the first date to sign-up for Week 3-Week 8 events is Thursday, January 19. There are no events during Week 9 because of Spring Break. Sign-up for Week 10-Week 16 events will begin on Thursday, February 9. See Section III on page three of this document for more information. A note about events included in this schedule: Please note that this schedule includes many events sponsored by other administrative units and academic departments from across our campus. We try to provide as much information as we can about forum events and their content in our schedule. Because we can't always know in advance the exact content of those events you may occasionally see and encounter things with which you do not agree. This is part of being a member of a diverse and complex community. The USP staff has made the decision to include many events in the Forum schedule sponsored by other units in order to provide the widest range of opportunities to University Scholars while offering as much flexibility as possible for you to complete your Scholars Forum requirements.
I. HSS 111 Attendance and Grading Policy To receive a grade of “Satisfactory” in HSS 111, students must attend 12 approved events on the USP Scholars Forum Syllabus in no fewer than 10 different weeks of the semester. “Incomplete” grades will not be given in this course. You may have absences during the semester, either excused or unexcused, and you will still receive a grade of “Satisfactory” if you attend 12 approved Forum events in 10 different weeks of the semester. Note: If you are registered for HSS 111 and do not drop it by the deadline to drop classes, you will still receive a grade for the course. (NB: March 12, 2012 is the last day to withdraw or drop a course without a grade at all levels.) This grade cannot be removed from your permanent transcript. Attendance at Scholars Forum events is taken with University Scholars Program Event Attendance Cards. These cards are distributed at the beginning and collected at the end of events. Students MUST thoughtfully complete both sides of the card to receive attendance credit. We value your feedback and review it carefully. Please take time to use the back of the card to offer comments, ask questions and tell us what you are learning and experiencing. A Final Note: Students who are participating in the Scholars Forum cannot receive Forum attendance credit for events that they perform in during the course of the semester. Also, students will receive credit only once for the same Forum events (e.g. If a student sees Rent twice, s/he can only get attendance credit for one performance.)
II. HSS 111 Forum Charges In order to provide the widest range of appropriate educational, cultural and personal opportunities possible through the HSS 111 Scholars Forum, the University Scholars Program makes available to USP students free tickets to a variety of activities on and off campus, and the opportunity to attend special dinners with faculty, noted alumni and other special guests. These are optional activities that may be used in partial fulfillment of the Scholars Forum requirements. The USP, however, must pay for these tickets and dinners. Students who sign up for but who then do not show up to attend these events not only waste valuable and limited resources, but also deny other students the opportunity to attend those events. Thus, students who sign up for but fail to attend dinners or events for which tickets must be purchased will be charged the cost of the dinner or unused ticket. A hold will be placed on your university records until the charge has been paid. Note: Students will not be charged if they cancel their event registration no less than 48 hours in advance that they will be unable to attend a dinner or event for which a ticket is required. A hold on your university records will prevent you from future registration or receiving transcripts. If you are assessed a charge you must pay it in order to free up your records.

III. Signing up for Optional Events Some events in the schedule require sign-up, while others do not. This is indicated after each event description in italics. Students will register for optional events that require sign-up using Classmate, an online registration system, at http://studentaffairs.ncsu.edu/scholars/scholarsforum/. Students must login to sign up for events, cancel reservations, and see all the events they have signed up for. Sign-up for Week 3-Week 8 events will begin on Thursday, January 19. There are no events during Week 9 because of Spring Break. Sign-up for Week 10-Week 16 events will begin on Thursday, February 9.
IV. Academic Integrity Academic misconduct will not be tolerated in this class. Information about the Code of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity are available at: http://www.ncsu.edu/policies/student_services/student_discipline/POL11.35.1.php.
V. Statement for students with disabilities Reasonable accommodations will be made for students with verifiable disabilities. VI. Forum Etiquette Our Forum speakers and performers are guests of the University Scholars Program and NC State University. Sleeping, talking, reading, and text messaging friends are all examples of rude and disrespectful behavior that not only prevent everyone from taking advantage of our guests' expertise and knowledge, but also reflect poorly on the University Scholars Program and its students. All students are expected to adhere to proper rules of etiquette while in Forum: turn off cell phones and laptops; put away newspapers and other texts; sit up and focus on the presentation; and when asking questions of Forum guests, remember to be respectful. Violations in Forum Etiquette during Scholars Forum or any optional Forum events are prohibited and can result in the loss of attendance credit and/or dismissal from the event.
VII. Honors Contracts The Honors Contract can be used by all students wishing to earn honors credit through enriched work in regular courses. The student initiates this application procedure by discussing the possibility with the instructor for the course. The contract may be for work done independently by a student under faculty supervision or may be made between faculty members and teams of students working on a common project. Honors Contracts must involve a full-time faculty member. However, graduate students or part-time instructors could be involved in an honors contract if a full-time faculty member provided supervision and endorses the contract. Note: Students are requested to return the signed contract to the USP office in 102 Sullivan Hall by the 10th day of the semester. Contracts received after the University’s official last day to drop classes (March 12, 2012) will not be approved.
VIII. Request for Credit: Independent Study or Research Course In order to successfully complete the University Scholars Program, Scholars are required to complete 12 hours of approved coursework by the time they graduate. University Scholars may receive up to 6 hours credit towards the 12-hour USP course requirement through successful completion of approved independent study or independent research courses [listed on page 2 of the Request for Credit form: http://www.ncsu.edu/univ_scholars/forms/ Request_for_Credit.pdf]. To receive credit towards the 12 hours of required USP coursework through completion of a 400-level independent study or independent research course a student must complete this form and submit it to the University Scholars Program office at the beginning of the semester in which the course is taken. [NOTE: Some courses listed on this form can be used to describe experimental courses or other non-individualized study courses. These courses cannot be used towards fulfillment of USP requirements.]

Business Meeting and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Campus Commemoration: Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates: The Consequences of Personal Responsibility Monday, January 9 2:30 PM Stewart Theatre, Talley Student Center Wes Moore served in Afghanistan as a member of the elite 1st Brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division and upon returning from war became a White House Fellow and served as a Special Assistant to then Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice. While doing research in South Africa, he learned of a warrant for the arrest of a man named Wes Moore for the murder of a police officer in the same Baltimore, Maryland neighborhood where he grew up. His communication with this other Wes Moore and the story of how their lives took different paths led to the best-selling The Other Wes Moore. Please note: The Scholars Forum will begin at 2:30 PM and the MLK, Jr Campus Commemoration will begin at 3:00 PM.

Raleigh Little Theatre: Dead Man’s Cell Phone Sunday, January 22 2:00 PM Meet in the Scholars Lounge, 102 Sullivan Residence Hall In a quiet cafe a cell phone rings. And rings. And rings, until the stranger at the next table has had enough. She confronts the owner of the cell phone, only to discover that he's, well…he’s dead. She begins to answer his calls and suddenly finds herself enmeshed in his life and family. Unfortunately, the dead guy has quite a number of shady loose ends. This surreal comic fantasy traces one woman’s accidental journey from the quiet cafe to the afterlife and back. Kaitlyn Rogers will organize a group of 9 students to attend this event. Building a Sustainable “Knowosphere”: Lunch and Learn with Andrew Revkin Wednesday, January 18 11:15 AM Auditorium, West Wing, DH Hill Library During this fast-paced “lunch and learn” program, prize-winning journalist, science blogger and author Andrew C. Revkin will discuss how innovations created in universities and laboratories can best be transmitted to parts of the world where they are most needed. Revkin is the author of The New York Times blog Dot Earth and has spent more than a quarter of a century covering subjects ranging from the troubled relationship between science and politics to climate change at the North Pole. This event is free; no voucher or ticket is necessary. Stellar Student: Saul Flores Wednesday, January 18 3:45 PM Assembly Room, 2nd Fl, East Wing, DH Hill Library In the summer of 2010, NC State student and Caldwell Fellow Saul Flores embarked on a long and dangerous journey. He walked, hitchhiked, and took buses for more than 5,000 miles, from Ecuador to his hometown of Charlotte. Flores had with him only a camera, a backpack and a couple of changes of clothes. In conjunction with the new exhibit of Flores' photographs opening in D. H. Hill's Exhibit Gallery, Flores will talk about his experiences and what has happened since his remarkable journey. This event is free; no voucher or ticket is necessary. Doc Hendley: Wine to Water Monday, January 23 2:30 PM Stewart Theatre As the founder and president of Wine To Water, NC State alum Doc Hendley has become an international crusader for clean water. In 2003, while still a CHASS student here at NC State, Doc put on the first fundraiser for what would become Wine to Water. With the proceeds, he traveled to Darfur and spent nearly a year there installing water systems. In 2009, CNN named him a Top 10 Finalist for their Hero of the Year award. Wine to Water is active in 9 countries, including the Sudan, Uganda, India, Ethiopia, and Haiti. Am I required to attend a certain number of optional events (i.e., field trips, dinners, plays, etc.) in partial fulfillment of my HSS 111 Forum requirements? No. Although we encourage you to attend as many optional events as you wish throughout the semester, you are not required to attend any. If you do choose to attend a Forum optional event, we encourage you to plan and sign-up in advance since many of the options have limited spaces available. Please do not wait until the last minute.

Can I choose to attend one of the optional events listed above in place of my regularly scheduled Forum every week? Yes, except, of course, when there are no options listed for a particular week. Otherwise, there is no limit on the number of weeks that you may choose to attend one of the optional events listed in this syllabus.

May I attend more than one event during a week and “save up” events that I have attended and use them to fulfill my Forum requirement for a later week? Students are required to attend their 12 Forum events in at least 10 different weeks of the semester. This means that you could attend more than one event in one or two weeks of the semester.

When should I turn in my attendance card? All USP attendance cards must be turned in at the end of the event at which they are distributed. No late USP attendance cards will be accepted. Please keep in mind that it is your responsibility to follow the attendance guidelines listed for each event in the schedule. Also, when filling out the attendance card, please print your name (some folks have handwriting that is difficult to read).
