SCHOOL OF LANDSCAPE PAINTING Artists Development Programme 2022-23

ADP Alumni 2022-2023 (Continuing studies)

The Artist Development Programme has been a series of in depth discussions that have underpinned your individual work. It has laid down core practices allowing you to expand, deepen and strengthen you as an artist. You have been expanding the formal foundations of your work over the years and acquired a knowledge of visual language: of colour, tone, composition and drawing. This is now laid down as a reference tool which can be used when required. In this past year, we have made variations within our work connected to place, and looked at fresh ways of expression through a changing repeating structure, and through the medium of monotypes. Importantly, all of this has been driven by each individual painter being required to articulate their core feelings and ideas about landscape connections as well as a philosophy of painting. You have been nourished by the experience of doing, reading notes and discussing, having tutorials and turning up in both Wales and your significant landscapes. For next year I am proposing a change of pace that will allow an individual programme of work, without podcasts and prescribed notes. Instead there will be 3 blocks of study days (Friday to Sunday) plus field trip spread regularly over the year, working together in the landscapes of Sussex Downs, Hampshire & Dorset (4 days) with tutorials. And the additional option of 7 days Wales Field trip St Davids in the spring and so regularly punctuating the year with support. This will be our ADP Alumni continuing studies. The word ‘alumni’ simply means “one who is being or who has been nourished”.

The School of Landscape Painting was founded by Christopher Baker, with 30 years experience as a professional artist, as a personal response to the subject of painting and the landscape. The School aims to combine the practical challenges of landscape painting with that of academic study and regularly making work across the year. Within the school there is a culture of discussion and shared experience to encourage a deeper communication of the subject.

‘Christopher Baker is one of the finest landscape painters of his generation and is magnificently equipped to tackle the changing drama of this land. Throughout a long career his love of subject has been matched by a relentless determination to discover a consistent quality of newness in his understanding of the natural environment. He is not a repeatist artist , indeed, there is a skill and freshness in the way he handles his subjects which is truly mesmeric. The paintings always work on two levels. They have a strong narrative and at the same time a powerful aesthetic appeal. It is a measure of his work that you do not need to look for clever phrases to respond to it. He articulates his vision so precisely his method of doing so is at one with his love of subject and profound spiritual engagement. His audience sense that his pictures are right. Here is honesty and truth. They have all stood on a mountain top or rocky headland with wind and spray in their face reveling in the joy of existence.’ Professor David Carpanini.
