Summary
introduction
Outdoor Learning Environment workshops with Architecture + Design Scotland
Context Edinburgh City Council will be replacing Boroughmuir High School, moving from their a short distance away. This piece of work aims to investigate ways in which the surrounding area can better provide opportunities for health and wellbeing, by engaging with the pupils to encourage active learning in a real life context.
Process The facilitating team engaged with pupils from Boroughmuir High School to have a better understanding of their world, their opinions and their suggestions for the new school environment. In the workshops the pupils have researched the local surroundings through
ideas for the new school and its surroundings.
The current route to school
This is our current route to school As a warm-up exercise we were asked to have a look at an aerial image of our current school location and each of us to mark our route from home to school. It was easy to understand the aerial view and recognise our local streets. We each have different ways to go to school. Some go by car or bus and some walk or cycle.
On another aerial map of our school area we marked places or spaces where we meet or go for lunch. We like to leave the school premises at lunchtime and make use of the facilities in the local area. We enjoy being away from our teachers and to meet in public places as part favourite street for this.
way to school and appreciate the facilities like shops and cafes on this street.

1
Setting criteria for what is good
Why we like these places
“I like it because it’s green, quiet, simple and has nice colours. It’s a nice place to be mellow.”
We were asked to bring images of a space or place we really like. The facilitators brought some images of precedents of outdoor spaces as well. Within different groups we presented our favourite place or space with at least three values added to the image. This exercise helps us to express an opinion about a good place in a profound and valueable way that can be inspiring and informative for the design team. It will help us to express ourselves in the following exercises where we look at our own surroundings. It also allows us to share
our opinions with each other and have an awareness of other opinions. We expressed a general preference for natural elements, curvy shapes, use of colour, benches, shelter and activity. The main theme through all the comments is that we like spaces and places where we can meet with our friends, where we can hang out, where we can have lunch together and where we can be active through play and sports.
Setting criteria for what is good
“A place to have lunch, watch the world and play” “Green, outdoors, wild, nature, people would like to come here to have their lunch or meet their friends.” “Costa has a homely atmosphere with warm colours, comfy seating and good music.”
Going out and looking at our local area
Going out and looking at out local area
route to make sure all the important places and spaces we currently use are on it. Everybody in the four reporting teams was given a task, writer and director. Every group had a different route, but all started at the school and visited Luckily it was dry! The aim was to gather evidence of good and bad things in the local area. It was important not to just record the agreed places, but to also observe the routes that link the places. While walking our route, we looked at the quality of our streets, the quality and width of pavements, availability of bins, the look and
appropriate location of bins, the use of fences and gates, the location and look of bus stops, the location of safe crossings, the presence of natural green space, the provision of bicycle racks, the quality of the buildings, atmosphere, the use of space, etc. We visited and recorded the places we marked on our route. We looked at use of material, atmosphere, location, presence of green, colours, etc. Every group came back with a lot of photos, will be analysed and organised on the next workshop day.
Recording observations
most to meet our friends and to have lunch. The Links provides an outdoor environment busy street with lots of shops and cafes that we use. Especially Costa on the corner is a favourite place because of a warm atmosphere and comfy seats. The pavements are sometimes not wide enough and there is a lot of clutter, like signs and bins. The current school building looks pretty, but is not modern enough. The playground could be improved with nicer railings, they now look prisony. The gates are nice, but could be bigger.

The plant pots help to make the playground a nice place, but more grass and planting would make it even better. The streets around the school are ok, but sometimes you see too many bins. The route towards the canal and the canal itself is described as shabby, unsafe, not looked after, not pleasant. However, the canal is also seen as peaceful, quiet, with nice views and has potential to be used as a space to hang out if it was cleaned up. With the information still fresh in our heads, all four groups made a map of the route that was taken with descriptions of what we had seen.

Bike stands that nobody uses, pretty pointless and take up space....not very ‘appealing’ to look at.
- A multi-use area - Spacious - Sports - Hanging with friends
5 - Barbeques - Bollywood coffee!
The bank - nice arched windows

What we like and don’t like
What we like and don’t like
that we made in the previous workshop, each group selected and categorised the photos and made a distinction between good, neutral and bad. We selected photos for the different sheets and added annotations to the photos. By making a selection and categorising them, we could focus on what we would like to tell the design team.
Good, what we really like “These are good photos of the entrance to Boroughmuir. I feel proud every time I come to school because of these.” “All these shops are very popular at break and lunch time. They are colourful and warming (e.g. Costa, Sainsbury’s, Hollipop)”
“The canal itself creates a peaceful atmosphere, especially when the weather is good. If there were tables and benches where we could enjoy our lunch.”
These are good photos of the entrance to Boroughmuir. I feel proud every time I come to school because of these.
- open space - plants - bins
- good function - wide pavement - quiet
- good colours - looks good - good products - warm colours - comfy seats - expensive
- green - big space - more bins - more benches
Links - Green, lush, natural, sunny ( In Summer) scenic landscapes, fresh air.
All these shops are very popular at break and lunch time. They are colourful and warming (e.g. Costa, Sainsbury’s, Hollipop)
Communal, cultural posters, bright, cosy, ‘teenage’
The pavements and roads are
Very nice architecture

- wide pavement - good, big space - looks nice - quiet, peaceful

gables.
Neutral, what we think is ok “Benches are good, but don’t like the bins next to them.”
“This was our only photo which was in between because it shows the schools strong building but also shows its pretty rubbish playground.”
Very nice architecture, maybe they shouldn’t put an ugly parking meter beside the church.
School building – historical, not modern enough for a new school. Nice architecture.
Benches are good, but don’t like the bins next to them.
- Using bike racks = good - Not used (bike racks) = bad
Good food, needs wider pavement outside
Better than cage
Popular road for cars and people
Sticks out so makes pavement smaller, looks nice
Nice area, very dirty!
Open spaces are good, but there’s not much to do.
Bollywood - Hard to get to because of busy road, looks and smells nice.
This was our only photo which was in between because it shows the schools strong building but also shows its pretty rubbish playground
Safe zebra crossing
Bad, what we don’t like “The bridge overlooking the canal is rusty and seems out of place compared to the stone part. There is also some barbed wire, which create an unfriendly atmosphere.”
“Too many bins!”
“Bush is overgrown and lots of litter in it. If a new one was planted, the canal would look much more welcoming.” “New school building site – looks ugly at the moment”
- Doesn’t look good - Lots of people use it - Gets cramped - Needs wider pavement
Pavement cluttered with bins and signs
Bad shop, bad service, dirty
- Big road - Smoking area - Too many bins

Bush is overgrown and lots of litter in it. If a new one was planted, the canal would look much more welcoming.
Dark wall [along the canal side], we think it would look nicer if it was more colourNew school building site – looks ugly at the moment
Thin, dangerous pavements
stop people from writing on the bridge, they would write here instead, or you could draw a nice picture on it.
if it were better cared for this
I feel that the cafeteria is dark, gloomy and unwelcoming. Maybe some new chairs and a new paint job might make it nicer!
- Very grey - Car- park is bad – they should make the car park a place that pupils don’t have to walk through These are the bits of the playground that we don’t like for we feel there is an absence of grass. Some new grass or plants or something might make this area nicer!
The underside of the bridge is
- Doesn’t look nice - Very smelly - Makes a mess of area - But have got a good use
Ugly street – lots of chewing (on left)
Presentation Masterplan
Riccardo Marini from Edinburgh City Council joined us at both workshops. He gave a presentation, showing examples of existing places, buildings and quotes to set a background for the new masterplan. The masterplan shows the location of the school along the canal and the open space around the school. It was made clear that the input from the pupils is important and will be given to the design team.

Imaginary mapping
into three groups. We looked at a new map showing the location of the new school. Our old school was on it as well. We set out an imaginary route on the map, covering the area around the location for the new school. On the route and around the school, locations were marked for features like outdoor seating, activities, plants and trees, colourful shops, sports, etc. We used images with inspiring precedents to express our ideas for the new school area.

Priorities
Setting priorities
After gathering so many ideas about the new school development it is important to set priorities. This is not just about telling the design team our top of each others ideas and will make sure that we support the outcome as a team. Within each of the three groups we looked at the work we’ve established in the workshops. We then discussed, and listed them on a sheet of paper.
were put on a table for everyody to see. Some priorities were similar on different sheets, like the need for sports facilities. All pupils were given 5 sticker dots to vote for their preferred priorities. These dots could be spread amongst the different options. Another strategy was to put all
as design suggestions for the new school development.
Priorities Top 5 - “Views / Windows / Glass stuff onto Canal, Long Glass window across the corridor” Sports facilities Shops – “Newsagents, Sweet shops, fast food, café” - “Lots of choice of shops and a café by the canal” Social areas, indoor and outdoor - “Better seating for groups at lunch” - “Spaces personalised by pupils” - “More social seating areas, More space (Not cramped liked cafeteria)”- “Outdoor furniture. Hammocks, tree house, benches, tables, Common room” Green space 1

Summary
Looking at the existing situation We like the area of our school. There are some beautiful buildings and the streets are safe and looked after, although there are a lot of bins in sight. Our school has a good entrance, which makes us proud every time we come to school. It’s good to be able to leave the school at lunch time and visit the shops and cafes. and busy and the cafes have a warm and cosy atmosphere. We also like to visit the Links to meet friends and have our lunch, especially when the weather is nice. If the park had more benches it would make it a better place.
The area towards the canal and the location for the new school is not as nice. There are no good shops, the buildings and the streets are not looked cars cross the bridge too fast and the pavement is not wide enough. We do like the quiet and peaceful atmosphere along the canal and the nice views over the water.
Summary
Suggestions for the new situation We can see potential for the new school location. When the canal will be cleaned up, it can have beautiful views with a boulevard along the water. We will meet our friends here and have lunch together. The waterfront could have colourful shops, cosy cafes with good food, outdoor seating trees, busy walk ways, intrigueing sculptures, sport activities, events, lighting, etc. It would be nice if we can see the canal and the surroundings from the school. The space between the school and the canal could be used for outdoor classrooms for Art, English, History and Mathematics.
The area at the other site of the location along Dundee Street can be improved as well. We’d like to see this as a quiet street with trees and shops and friendly for pedestrians. The garage could relocate and make space for shops. We like to see natural materials like timber and the use of colour. We also would like to contribute to a piece of art on a wall.
The outcome as recorded in this report will be presented to the pupils, the rest of the school, the local community, the council and to the design team. Aim is to keep the pupils involved as consultants during the design development and completion of the building and its surroundings.
