U13A Cricket Report Wynberg dismantle much‐fancied Rondebosch Springfield

WBJS U13A dismantle muchfancied RBPS SAT, 23/10/2010 13:01 | BY CHARLES EKSTRÖM

Wynberg’s three centurions from their 20/20 tournament in Johannesburg. From left to right: Rayaan Meyer (103 vs St Peters and 120 vs St Martins), captain Jordan Holgate (113 not out vs St Martins), Mika Ekström (107 not out vs St Peters)

On Saturday 23 October Wynberg U13A cricket side hosted a muchfancied Rondebosch team which included two of their three WP U13 Cricket representatives in captain Murray Commins and Dayyaan Galiem on Saturday morning. Wynberg proved beyond doubt that they had the measure of this side on the day and that their touring results had given the players huge selfconfidence and belief as they proceeded to give Rondebosch a cricketing lesson.

Captain Murray Commins of Rondebosch won the toss on an overcast morning with the outfield still wet from overnight rain. He decided to bat and was left ruing that decision as Wynberg opener Mika Ekström tore into the top order with relish and emerged with the first three wickets to fall. Mika bagged a total of

four wickets in the match (all bowled) including the prized scalps of Murray Commins and Dayyaan Galiem.

The Wynberg spin duo of Jordan Holgate and Kyle Tattersall once again stepped up to the plate and kept the opposition batsmen under pressure with accurate bowling ably supported by aggressive fielding. Jordan bowled well to take another 3 wicket haul while Kyle flighted the ball without fear and was rewarded for his efforts with a wicket.

All the bowlers that were used had a good outing as they utilised the favourable conditions to their advantage. Rondebosch were bowled out for 102 runs in 25.1 overs.

With Rondebosch and WP U13A opening bowler Dayyaan Galiem starting the bowling proceedings to the Wynberg batsmen, Mika Ekström and Rayyaan Meyer there were some nervous batsmen from Wynberg keeping a close eye on Dayyaan's pace. Mika flicked his first ball down legside for four runs and an almost audible collective sigh of relief could be heard from the balcony.

The tone had been set and were it not for an unnecessary runout of Rayyaan Meyer Wynberg's performance may have been slightly more clinical. Hard to imagine that as Mika and captain Jordan Holgate went about destroying the muchtalked about Rondebosch attack with great timing and power.

Jordan faced Dayyaan in his first over at the crease and smashed him back over his head for a belligerent six. At the other end Mika joined in the festivities and pulled Dayyaan's opening partner Murray Commins for six over square leg. Thereafter the runs flowed freely as the batsmen attacked with glee amid the cacophony of support from the spectators.

All in all Mika and Jordan hit 9 sixes before Jordan was stumped for a superb innings of 58 runs. By then the writing was on the wall as Mika had pulverised two balls out of the school grounds with the final ball being smashed over spin bowler Y Allie's head and into the trees outside the school grounds.

Wynberg finished on 105/2 and won the match by 8 wickets.
