a broad curriculum Teaching teams work closely to deliver an innovative and balanced curriculum; we offer a course of study that is broad, rich and flexible enough to provide a range of subject options as students progress through the school. As students mature, the curriculum diversifies to offer wider choices and distinctive pathways. In addition to studying the common curriculum, Year 9 students specialise in either a performing or visual arts, aiming to achieve a BTEC qualification equivalent to a high-grade GCSE by the end of Year 9. Our creative, forward thinking, high quality teaching, coupled with excellent careers guidance and pastoral provision, supports students in their personal development, inspiring them to pursue their own learning objectives and to succeed in life. We regularly review and redesign subject programmes within all areas of the curriculum to ensure we provide exciting and challenging learning opportunities.

Years 7, 8 and 9 In the first three years all students follow a common curriculum that builds on the strong achievements of our feeder primaries including: English, maths, science, art, dance, drama, music, humanities (in Year 7 a single subject programme including history, geography, RE and ICT; in Years 8 and 9 these subjects are taught separately), languages (French or Spanish), design and technology, PE, Personal Social Health and Economic Education (PSHEE) and citizenship.

Years 10 and 11 All students in Years 10 and 11 follow a core curriculum including: English (language and literature), maths, science (three science GCSEs, two combined science GCSEs or BTEC), RE, ICT, PE, PSHEE and citizenship. We work in close partnership with other Camden centres to enable students to access specialist vocational provision offsite as well as offering a wide range of GCSE and vocational courses in various subject areas at our school including: visual, performing and media arts, languages, humanities, technology, business, sociology, PE and sports. We provide all students with the opportunity to participate in work experience and access careers guidance to support them in their career options and pathways and prepare them for further education.

beyond the classroom As an Arts specialist school we encourage creativity across the curriculum, stimulating personal development, selfconfidence and success. We build students’ ability to think creatively, express themselves confidently, find their personal passion and engage with the world around them. We have a broad range of arts subjects embedded within our curriculum including art and design, history of art, photography, media, dance, drama and music. Students are provided with state-of-the-art facilities to support them in the development of their creativity and are given ample opportunities to perform and share their work. We are strong advocates of learning beyond the classroom and believe through offering a wealth of extra-curricular opportunities students will unearth and develop talents and skills that are an integral part of personal development. We offer a range of sporting activities, teams and competitions alongside a rich medley of activities including chess club, science club, creative writing, Mandarin language and Chinese culture club. Our enviable location provides our students with the opportunity to participate in London-wide events with universities, theatres, local government and galleries.

leadership and personal development opportunities We pride ourselves on our student leadership and provide opportunities for students to develop their skills through a variety of inspirational, stimulating and valued ventures. Our students thrive on being student ambassadors and school council electives. Our trained peer mentors play an important role in the transition process, ensuring younger students settle and flourish at Acland Burghley. Our students are offered the opportunity to participate in a number of initiatives such as The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Many of these initiatives are designed to challenge and broaden students’ awareness of values and qualities such as team work, leadership, motivation and commitment, and develop an understanding as to how they can be applied to their own learning and personal development.

care and support Our staff are committed and dedicated to ensuring all students achieve their full potential. Students form strong relationships with Heads of Year and Form Tutors who are able to track and monitor where students are achieving and identify where additional support is required. Our Assistant Pastoral Leaders fulfil a non-teaching role that is dedicated solely to supporting students’ pastoral needs. In order to ensure students receive the support necessary to help them achieve we encourage strong and frequent communications between home and school. Students with particular needs or aptitudes benefit from specialist support. The Base, a specialist resource for autism, enables us to include young people with autism who require more specialist support to access a mainstream secondary environment. The Base is an integral part of our school and a hub of focused activity that everyone wants to be a part of.
