Ernesto Júlio de Nazareth (1863 -1934) was both a pianist and the greatest Brazilian composer of tango music. Strongly influenced by Brazilian folk music, he focused mainly on light entertainment and his dance music is still extremely popular in his home country today. Heitor Villa-Lobos called him ‘the true embodiment of the Brazilian spirit’. Many of Nazareth’s compositions are Chôro laments, a genre that is very popular in Brazil, but it was his tangos that made him famous.
