Creston Livestock Auction

Creston, Iowa • 641-782-7025

Welcome!

For a decade the Performance Unlimited Bull Sale Partners; Beef Resources Partnership and Schu-Lar Herefords have been offering feed efficiency tested bulls at the Creston Livestock Market. As we start this years sale letter we would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to all of past buyers whose support makes it possible for us to do what we love to do; which is selecting the most Industry Relevant Hereford Genetics possible! As a first this year, we will be offering a select set of open replacement heifers to add to your herd. Don’t miss out on this new opportunity to find superior quality replacement females.

For the past 15 years we have been collecting individual feed intakes on every bull we offer for sale. This individual efficiency data has allowed us to produce cattle that cut cost of gain and lower cow forage intake/cow carrying cost. Our goal is to produce genetics that improve your bottom line profit!

While selection for efficiency has been a focus, we have continued to select and seek cattle that offer balanced performance and improve pay weights at weaning or on the rail. We continue to emphasize cattle with improved carcass traits that will also provide productive cow production traits and improved udder quality.

Please note that every animal in this sale qualifies for all 3 American Hereford Association recognition programs. This is documentation of our balanced selection approach! The Hereford Advantage Program is based on a Top 50% ranking or higher for CHB$ Index (carcass and feedlot performance merit). The Maternal Advantage Program is based on a Top 50% ranking for Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$). The Premium Red Baldy is designed to take advantage of the best traits of both Hereford and Red Angus. Females must be sired by bulls in the Top 50% of the breed for Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$). The Baldy Maternal Index is a maternally focused index designed to identify females with improved fertility and longevity.

As well look forward to sale day we could not be more optimistic about the future of the beef industry. With inventories tightening we are seeing rising pricing for feeder cattle and fed cattle. This is a great time to make an investment in quality genetics as the future value of progeny should sell on a rising market.

We look forward to seeing you on sale day March 29th. If you can’t be here in person, we invite you to join us on www.cattleusa.com. Please contact Creston Livestock 2 to 3 days before the sale to get approved to bid online. Please Let us know how we can assist you in making your selections.

Feed E fficiency Defined

R FI: residual feed intake, RFI is a measure of feed e ff iciency calculated as the difference bet ween and animal ’s ac tual feed intake and its predic ted feed intake, for a given level of produc tion. When RFI is used as a genetic selec tion tool, the resulting progeny will consume less feed for the same level of produc tion. RFI is independent of grow th, body size and other per formance traits (Koch et al. , 19 6 3), selec tion for animals with low RFI will lead to reduced feed intake and improved feed e ff iciency without compromising body size, carcass qualit y or grow th. Lower RFI values are more favorable, cat tle with low RFI values are more e ff icient than cat tle with high RFI values .

R ADG : residual average daily gain, the difference bet ween an animal ’s ac tual weight gain and its predic ted gain based on its dr y mat ter intake, body weight maintenance and fat cover. Residual average daily gain puts each animal ’s feed intake on the same playing f ield and looks at differences in average daily gain while RFI puts each animal ’s grow th and body size on the same playing f ield and looks at differences in feed intake When selec ting for R ADG , cat tle with higher values are more desirable than those with lower values , meaning that they had greater ADG for the same amount of feed.

DMI: dr y mat ter intake, an animal ’s average daily dr y mat ter intake during test . DMI is dependent on the dr y mat ter content of the ration fed during the trial period.

R aw F:G : feed to gain ratio, also referred to as feed conversion ratio (FCR) F:G ratio refers to the amount of feed consumed per unit of weight gain on a dr y mat ter basis . A lower ratio is considered more favorable. While selec tion for F:G (FCR) results in animals that grow faster it is also associated with cat tle that have a larger mature size.

Adj. F:G: adjusted feed to gain ratio, accounts for differences in animal age and size during test . This currently is the standard of feed conversion e ff iciency used by the Beef Improvement Federation. This value is the base F:G value multiplied by the contemporar y group’s metabolic mid weight divided by the individual ’s metabolic mid weight . A lower adjusted F:G ratio is more favorable.
