COURSE CONTENT
To study this course, you should first and foremost have an interest in a career which involves working with people. The care sector is one of the country’s biggest and most diverse employers offering a wide range of jobs in both health and social care. This BTEC course will not only provide you with the knowledge and skills to pursue a career in the care sector but also provide you with a good foundation for many degree courses depending on your choice of other subjects.
The course will contain 12 units across the two years and could including some of the following:
This is a course you can start from scratch and covers a wide variety of interesting topics. The theory is closely related to practice and you will take part in work experience.. The course will enable you to develop your self-confidence and communication skills through group work, roleplays and presentations as well as transferable skills such as time management and organisation, which are useful in any area of employment.
Developing effective Communication in H & S C will enable you to reflect on your own existing skills and explore and develop the skills needed for effective communication in different situations. Equality, Diversity and Rights in H & S C will enable you to understand the immense diversity of individuals in British society and how good practice in H & S C recognises and copes with this. Health, Safety and Security in H & S C will enable you to look at these issues in the care environment with a view to protecting clients and those working in this sector. Development through the Life Stages will extend your understanding of the needs of individuals at different life stages, including their potential needs. Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care will give information relating to body systems and the way they work. Personal and Professional Development This will lead to the formulation of a work placement based portfolio which will help you to track your
personal and professional development over the course. Safeguarding Adults and Promoting Independence - This will familiarise you with the different types of abuse and the safeguarding procedures. It looks at legislation and policies and the need to develop supportive relationships with vulnerable service users. Complimentary therapies This unit aims to enable learners to investigate the use and role of complementary therapies in health and social care settings in order to maintain health and wellbeing and compare these to orthodox treatments. Caring for Children and Young People This will develop understanding of care in relation to, ‘looked after children’. It will look at legislation and safeguarding procedures. Physiological Disorders - This looks at the disorders suffered by individuals. It considers the causes of the disorder, the way the disorder manifests itself and the treatment available.
Details of all of the BTEC courses are accurate at time of print. However, most of these courses at level 3 will be subject to change prior to August 2016, both in terms of course content and assessment methodology. Nutrition for health and Social Care will increase the learner’s understanding of current thinking on nutritional health, particularly relating to users of health and social care services, in order to make recommendations to improve the nutritional health of an individual. Public Health - This unit will increase your knowledge of the origins of public health policy and the current strategies in place. It will also develop an understanding of how public health is monitored, the origin and development of systems for promoting and protecting public health, and the range of key groups in influencing related policy. Physiology of Fluid Balance This unit aims to develop your knowledge of the micro-structure of animal cells and understanding of the importance of maintaining fluid balance in the human body, the mechanisms by which this is regulated and some of the implications when these systems fail.
SPECIFIC ENTRY CRITERIA Grade C in GCSE English Language. Students will be guided through the first year of the course to ensure that they are on the most appropriate route for their progression plans.
HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE AT HUDDERSFIELD NEW COLLEGE
All Health and Social Care tutors at Huddersfield New College are vocationally experienced in the field and have qualifications relevant to the course they teach. Caring for Older People The unit aims to enable you to develop an understanding of the ageing process and how the health and social care sectors work in partnership to promote and maintain the independence and wellbeing of older people. This is an ideal course if you would like to extend your knowledge of Health and Social Care, or you can start this course from scratch. It is the equivalent of 3 GCSEs and a well-recognised qualification, which is intended for students interested in working with people. Over the years the intermediate course has proved to be very successful in terms of results and in enabling students to progress to an advanced course. We see this as a very positive year for our students as it will boost your confidence in being able to achieve and it will also prepare you for the rigours of advanced study.
COURSE CONTENT This is a one-year course in which you have a wide range of units. Some of these units are assignment based and some are externally assessed. Throughout the year you will collect evidence for your portfolio and although much of this will be written, it may take the form of posters, leaflets, and taped or videoed evidence. Case studies, group work and role-play may also be used to help you collect evidence. The theory is closely related to practise and you will complete 25 hours of work experience.
