Classroom Code These are the expectations and standards for every classroom in West Hill School. They are for the benefit of every pupil and are non negotiable. Readiness for learning • How you present yourself is important. School uniform must be worn smartly at all times. • Unusual hairstyles are not allowed. Long hair must be neatly tied back. Pupils should be clean shaven and jewellery should not be worn. • When moving about the school keep to the left, move quietly and do not run. Keep to paths and steps. Wait quietly outside classrooms. • Be punctual to registration and all lessons. • Refer to female teachers as Ma’am and male teachers as Sir. • Respect the right to learn of every other pupil in the group. Entering and Exiting Classrooms • You should enter a classroom in an appropriate manner when invited to do so by your teacher. • When leaving a classroom you will be dismissed by your teacher. Leave in a quiet and orderly manner. When you enter the room, remember to: • remove your outside coat • settle down immediately for an organised start • ensure that your uniform is worn correctly • get out your planner and all necessary equipment and place on your desk • treat your school environment with care and respect. Your learning is our priority and, as such, it is important that you: • listen carefully and follow teacher instructions • put up your hand before answering questions • proofread your own work • ensure your planner is as well presented as your school books • do not disrupt the learning of others • embrace the classroom ethos. Remember to treat each other with the courtesy and respect we all deserve. 4

Homework Homework is both important and necessary. It provides opportunities for reinforcement of work learned during the school day by allowing you to review and practice what has been covered in class, and helps you prepare for the next day’s learning. Homework helps develop positive study skills and habits that will serve you well throughout life. More importantly it teaches you to work independently and to take some responsibility for your own learning. Studies have shown that pupils who regularly complete homework to a good standard are likely to perform significantly better in academic examinations at 16 years old, and beyond, than those who do not. Always note the details of homework in your planner when it is given to you. Make sure you note the date it is due to be handed in. Try to plan ahead so that your homework is not left to the last minute. Try to do your homework at the same time each day. Choose a time when you can be quiet and away from distractions. Always take pride in what you do and praise and success will follow. After School Homework Clubs are provided in each Year Group to help pupils establish good homework routines. These are optional unless a pattern of not completing homework is detected. When this occurs attendance at Homework Club is made compulsory for an agreed period of time. My Homework Club takes place on in room

Cycling to School We would like to encourage as many pupils as possible to use public transport, walk or cycle to school. From September 2017 we will have cycle storage facilities on site. To be allowed to store a cycle on site all pupils and parents must sign and adhere to the following agreement. I understand and agree with the following conditions under which my son may cycle to school: 1. Pupils must only store bikes in the designated storage facilities nowhere else in school. 2. Riding bikes on the school site is strictly forbidden and boys must walk with them to the storage area. 3. A cycle helmet must be worn on the way to and from school. 4. The cycle should be regularly checked and maintained. 5. To deter theft, an appropriate lock should be used to lock the bike during the day. 6. Pupils using their bike in periods of darkness will ensure they have working lights and make an effort to be visible to other road users by wearing appropriate safety clothing. I understand that school will take all reasonable steps to ensure general security throughout the day but are not responsible for any damage or loss that may occur. I give my consent for my son to cycle to school Parent’s Name:

General Property - It is extremely helpful both to yourself and your teachers if your equipment and clothing has your name on it in the event of something being lost. Lost Property - It is highly likely that you will lose something during your time at school. We all depend on one another to be responsible and honest. If you find an item of equipment or clothing please either hand it to your teacher or take it to the reception office. If you have lost something, check first at the reception office. (Lost property is opposite the office.) ID Card information All pupils are issued with ID cards when they start at West Hill School. The ID card allows access to school buildings during term time from 08:15 to 16:00 Monday to Friday and the Dining Room from 07:00. Should a replacement ID card be required, pupils should obtain a sticker for their planner from Reception, get this signed by their parent/carer, and take their planner to the ICT Office at the published times, along with the appropriate fee for a new card to be issued. All damaged cards are charged for, faulty cards and the first lost card are replaced free of charge. Dining Room Facilities We operate a breakfast service every morning before school begins, a break time service and the main lunchtime service which is a cafeteria service with a wide range of choices. Harrison Catering operate a cashless catering system at West Hill School. Therefore no cash can be accepted at the till points in the school dining room. For more information on the services provided by Harrison Catering, please refer to the school website: School Life Æ Catering. Packed lunches can also be consumed in the hall at lunchtimes. School Council The School Council is a group of boys who are elected to represent the views of all pupils. It is through the School Council that you can have your voice heard, and this is how the headteacher and governors learn what improvements you want to see at West Hill. It is made up of form councillors, year councillors, the secretary, the head and the deputy head of the School Council. Individual ideas are first discussed in form time. Then form councillors pass on your views to the year councillors, who then represent you at the School Council. Meetings are usually held once every half term. Examinations Please refer to the school website for information on examinations.

Home School Agreement All schools must, by law, have a home school agreement. It is intended to show, in brief terms, what the parents and the school may reasonably expect from each other and both parties are asked to endorse it. The agreement is set out below and you are invited to sign this. You do not have to sign the agreement and if you do not wish to do so there will be no negative reaction on our part. If you do sign the agreement it will not be legally binding. The parents will: 1. See that their son attends school punctually and is properly equipped every day unless there is an unavoidable reason. 2. Let the school know about any problems that might affect their son’s work or behaviour. 3. Support the school’s policies and rules governing codes of conduct and appearance, including e-safety & acceptable ICT use. 4. Support their son in all aspects of school work. 5. Show an interest in their son’s education by attending parent’s consultation evenings, and reading and signing reports. 6. Encourage their son to support the school’s extracurricular programme. Signed

10

Punctuality Punctuality is an important part of self-discipline and is essential to good time management. If you arrive late to School, and it is after Registration, please report to Mr Wick the Attendance Officer. Lateness will be recorded on SIMS. There may well be a valid reason for arriving late but in such circumstances you should bring a note from home explaining the reason for your lateness.

Attendance Regular attendance at school is compulsory by law. It is essential that your attendance is good if you are to benefit from your education. We insist, therefore, that medical and other appointments be arranged outside school hours whenever possible. School has to distinguish between “authorised” and “unauthorised” absence when we mark the registers. Absence may only be authorised if it is for reasons which are exceptional or unavoidable and has been applied for in advance. If you are going to be absent from school unexpectedly or if you are ill, your parents should phone the attendance officer before 8:45 am to let us know the reason for your absence. On return to school you must have a signed note from your parents explaining the nature of your absence. Family holidays should not be arranged during term time.

Guidance on the Use of Personal Mobile Devices • School is NOT responsible for individuals’ Personal Mobile Devices being damaged, lost or stolen. Items are brought to school at the individuals’ own risk. • All Personal Mobile Devices should be switched off at all times and stored in the pupil's bag or Blazer pocket whilst on the school grounds or on a school organised activity off-site, except when explicit permission has been given by a member of staff. • If a member of staff has given permission for the use of Personal Mobile Devices, they MUST only be used as directed by the member of staff and their use MUST comply with the School's ICT Policies.

Sanctions for the Unauthorised use of Personal Mobile Devices • Pupils will be asked to turn off their Personal Mobile Device and put it away in the first instance. • If the pupil fails to turn off the device and put it away or is a persistent offender, the device will be confiscated immediately and kept in the school safe until written permission for the return from the pupil’s Parents/Carers is brought into school. Devices will not be returned before the end of the school day. • Repeat occurrences will result in longer periods of confiscation and the pupil being referred to their Head of Year. 11

Detentions All teachers and support staff can issue personal detentions. Detentions may be held at break-time, lunchtime or after school. It is for the member of staff issuing the detention to determine the day, time and length of the detention. Personal detentions can vary in length from a few minutes up to 60 minutes long depending upon the reason for the detention. Detentions after school of 15 minutes or less can be given on the same day without communication with home. Detentions after school hours greater than 15 minutes but less than 30 minutes can be given on the same day of issuing, but the teacher must ensure that communication with parents or carers has been made prior to the start of the detention. Detentions of longer than 30 minutes, parents will receive 24 hours notice. 3DUHQWDO consent is not required for detentions. Protecting Learning Detention All pupils are entitled to learn and those who disrupt the learning of others will attend a Protecting Learning Detention. This is a whole school detention which takes place every Tuesday from 2.55pm to 3.55pm in the Conference Suite of the Hewitt building.

I am being bullied.

Tell somebody – your Form Tutor, a parent, a teacher or a friend.

I have a dental/medical appointment.

Always try to arrange appointments out of school time. If this is not possible, bring a note from home for your Form Tutor. Sign out at Reception when you leave and sign in when/if you return.

I have lost something.

Lost property is stored opposite the school Reception Office. Remember: all property should be marked with your name.

I don’t understand a homework task.

See your subject teacher, your Form Tutor or a friend. Do this BEFORE the work is due in.

I have forgotten to bring something to school.

Explain to your Form Tutor or subject teacher at the start of the day/lesson.

An item is confiscated.

Ask the teacher who has confiscated it when it can be collected and what the conditions are.

I don’t feel well.

Tell your Form Tutor or your subject teacher.

I am absent from school.

Get a parent/guardian to phone the school on the first morning before 8:45 am. Bring a note from them on your return and catch up on any missed work.

I take medication.

Leave all medication at the school Reception Office. Get someone from home to contact the school to explain what the medication is for and how and when it needs to be taken. Asthma inhalers don’t have to be left in Reception although a spare inhaler can be labelled and left. School is not allowed to administer any medication such as paracetamol unless provided by the Parent /Carer.
