The engineering school supports a high quality graduate school experience through its location in the “engineering capital of Canada.” It has strong ties to industry and provides opportunities to undertake multidisciplinary work in groundbreaking areas such as biomedical and environmental engineering. Other multidisciplinary strengths lie in petroleum, mechanical, software, and transportation engineering, as well as project management. STUDENT SERVICES Comprehensive student services ensure that all students have access to the academic, professional and personal support they require to successfully complete their studies. Two fully furnished apartment buildings are available to single graduate students. Apartments are self-contained with full kitchens and bathrooms. Activities in the buildings are designed specifically around the needs of graduate students, giving them the opportunity to interact and connect with other graduate students and learn more about the city of Calgary. Studio, one-, two-, and four-bedroom units are available.
STUDENTS WITH FAMILIES The family housing complex contains 250 unfurnished units, including one-, two-, and three-bedroom townhouses. The complex offers community activities designed for student families, including after-school programs, gourmet clubs, play groups, and festivals. RESERVOIR CHARACTERIZATION DEGREES OFFERED The university offers an interdisciplinary specialization in Reservoir Characterization to students in a course-based Master’s program in chemical and petroleum engineering or geoscience. The program integrates reservoir engineering, geology, geophysics, and reservoir characterization. Students will receive the degree of the home program. UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS
1. CONTACT YOUR GRADUATE PROGRAM OF INTEREST DIRECTLY
The University of Calgary offers a number of graduate scholarships to incoming and currently registered students. Generally, these awards are available to students who are registered full-time in a thesis-based program. Some awards, including the prestigious Killam Predoctoral Scholarships, are distributed through the Open Scholarship Competition, an annual competition for a large number of internal awards. Students interested in the Open Scholarship Competition should contact their program of interest directly.
BURSARIES Bursaries are available to graduate students with demonstrated financial need.
GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS • Graduate Assistantship (Teaching) recipients assist with the instructional responsibilities of the department. • Graduate Assistantship (Non-Teaching) recipients assist departments and/or professors with non-teaching responsibilities (e.g., research). • Graduate Assistantships (Trust) are funded from the research support accounts held in trust for university staff who select and recommend graduate students for such appointments. The stipends vary. This type of support must be arranged between graduate students and their prospective supervisors directly.
EXTERNAL AWARDS External awards are offered by government, industry, and international, national and provincial organizations.

HOW TO APPLY 1. CHOOSE A PROGRAM The Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary offers Master’s and PhD programs in a wide variety of areas.
2. REVIEW THE MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS In order to be admitted to a graduate program at the University of Calgary, you must meet the minimum admission requirements set by both the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the program you wish to apply to. The Faculty of Graduate Studies requires the following: DEGREE Applicants must hold or obtain a four-year baccalaureate degree or equivalent from a recognized institution. Degrees from international institutions are evaluated based on their academic equivalency to those at the University of Calgary. Please refer to the following website for more information on the international degree requirements: www.grad.ucalgary.ca/internationalrequirements GRADES An admission grade point average of 3.0 or higher (on the University of Calgary 4.0 scale) is required. This is based on the last two years of the undergraduate degree consisting of a minimum of 10 full-course equivalents. A minimum grade point average of 3.5 in MSc is required for a PhD program, and may be higher in some departments. International students should check the Faculty of Graduate Studies website for the grade requirements for their country of origin. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY Applicants with qualifications obtained outside of Canada may need to complete this requirement. Students are strongly encouraged to contact their department of interest as soon as possible to determine the specific course requirements, application deadlines and additional information required for admission to their programs.
3. BE AWARE OF THE PROGRAM INTAKE DATES AND APPLICATION DEADLINES All departments in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary have several annual intake dates. September (fall) is the most common semester for starting. However, most departments also accept students to begin their programs in January (winter), May (spring) or July (summer). See specific departments for details. In case of discrepancy between application dates here and in the online grad calendar, the online version shall be the correct date.
4. SUBMIT A FORMAL APPLICATION
Graduate applications can be completed through the online application form, accessed through each department’s website. All applications to the University of Calgary must include the following: 1. OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS FROM ALL POST-SECONDARY INSTITUTIONS ATTENDED Transcripts must be sent directly from the issuing institution. If transcripts are in a language other than English, the applicant must provide official transcripts in the original language as well as notarized English translations. 2. TWO APPROPRIATE LETTERS OF REFERENCE An appropriate letter of recommendation is one written by an independent individual who can provide an assessment of the applicant’s background and capabilities with respect to the prospective program. 3. OFFICIAL TOEFL, IELTS, GMAT, OR GRE SCORES, IF APPLICABLE 4. OTHER REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION, AS PER PROGRAM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 5. A NON-REFUNDABLE APPLICATION FEE The application fee is CDN$100 for Canadian citizens and permanent residents and CDN$130 for international applicants who will be attending on a study permit. (Fees subject to change. Please confirm current fees at www.grad.ucalgary.ca.) The application fee may be paid through cheque or money order, made payable to the University of Calgary. Applications will only be processed if the application fee has been paid. A separate application form and fee, along with supporting documents, must be submitted for each program to which you apply.
5. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I APPLY?
After the application deadline passes, each graduate program forms a committee to review the applications received. The committee not only considers the applicant’s credentials but also reviews the availability of resources for supervision and research, departmental research objectives and program balance. The recommended applications are submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The Faculty of Graduate Studies reviews these applications to ensure that each student meets the minimum requirements for admission. If the requirements are met, the Faculty of Graduate Studies notifies the student that he/she has been admitted.
