We make music. And when we make music, we make it better together. As I reflect on the past year, I am reminded the Schulich School of Music is built on a foundation of talent, intellect, dedication, and creativity. With these strengths, we as a community are able to envision new possibilities for education, performance, and research. With purpose and imagination, we see ways to shape not only our own future, but also the future of music itself.

Two Distinguished Visiting Professors will join us as Schulich Dean’s Chairs this year. Professor Aaron Williamon, head of the Performance Science program at Royal College of Music in London, is teaching a course on performance science as well as co-hosting, with Schulich Professor Isabelle Cossette, the International Symposium on Performance Science at McGill in October. Professor Johann Buis, from Wheaton College, IL, is teaching courses at the intersection of musicology, ethnomusicology, cultural theory, and social justice; engaging with the School’s diversity goals; and organizing public events related to the themes of his research. Also coming to Schulich is a phenomenal roster of Catherine Thornhill Steele Visiting Artists, including Isabelle Demers, Darrin Milling, Tonya P. Mitchell-Spradlin, Sheila Jordan, Karen Burke, Joseph Pereira, and John Mortensen. These international guests will fuel Schulich with bold and innovative ideas, contributing their fresh perspectives to multiple disciplines and communities. Keep an eye out for opportunities to connect with these renowned musicians and scholars. The rhythm of our school year is revealed here page by page and note by note. As we return to a more familiar flow, I encourage you to step outside your musical comfort zone: find new-to-you composers, works, and styles; explore a different century and hear instruments played in novel ways; take a chance on a topic you have not considered before. Read on to discover our season and many of the vibrant voices of our community. Meet the people that make the place. Meet us here, where we make music.

BRENDA RAVENSCROFT, Ph.D. Dean, Schulich School of Music of McGill University

Dominick Gravel

In our continuing mission to offer the highest calibre of teaching and learning in an inclusive and inspiring environment, I am thrilled that we are welcoming three new jazz colleagues. Vocalist and saxophonist Camille Thurman, bassist Ira Coleman, and drummer Darrell Green are all world-class performing artists and gifted and committed jazz educators.

Every student should leave Schulich with a flexible and versatile perspective on their potential career trajectories — knowing what their skills and areas of expertise are, being able to recognize opportunities and knowing how those skills can be transferred and developed in a range of contexts. To those starting at Schulich, I say: seize opportunities; follow your interests; be curious; ask questions; think critically about where you can make a contribution.

I’m looking forward to getting to know more of the landscape of contemporary Canadian composers with the Graham Sommer Competition!

I’m curious about how different each work will be, specifically. I can’t wait to speak with the composers about their inspirations in writing the music we’ll premiere. It’s also cool to think that we’ll be bringing not one, but five brand-new works to life in the span of just a couple of weeks.

I am excited to meet and collaborate with all students who have chosen to learn and speak the language of jazz, a language that leaves much room for creative individuality. In music, we are lifelong learners. When we first embarked on our musical journeys, we marvelled at and were intrigued by the magic of music. When students leave McGill, equipped with more tools to analyze and comprehend and execute music, I wish everyone to retain joy in playing and enthusiasm and excitement in learning. We are privileged to use music as the medium through which we encounter and embrace others who agree and those who disagree with our views. The humanity of all persons is expressed in creativity through the arts. Engaging in Music teaches us to be problemsolvers, collaborators, leaders and followers, persons who lament and triumph, persons who have to assert themselves at times and at other times to show grace and empathy to others.

As a musician and teacher, my goal is always to delve deeper into the meaningfulness of making music, to connect with a language that transcends words and the material world. As an academic leader, my goal for this year, my last as Department of Performance chair, is to facilitate the return to campus for students and staff to the best of my abilities and to continue to advance the many initiatives that are underway.

One of my aims since I started making music was to enjoy the whole process as thoroughly as possible, from the first idea for a programme through to the last note. That includes preparing oneself, whether as a soloist, a director or an ensemble performer, to give the most infectious performance possible, where the possibilities for a spontaneous moment of delight are wide open.

In my opinion, the greatest asset of an organist is flexibility. We constantly have to adjust to new instruments in different spaces, over a very short period of time. Moving forward, with the pandemic following its ebb and flow, I think flexibility will be required of everybody, on a very broad scale — being able to convert a series of concerts into a recording project, for example, or going to a different venue. Organists may have a bit of a head start as we always need to have Plan B or Plan C in case things don’t work out as expected. We deal with complicated yet fragile machines and have to adapt to their will – not entirely unlike our current Corona foe!

Gathering ensembles of different levels and from different milieus allows for unique human and musical collaborations. The growth and development of artists doesn’t happen in silos; it is rather through collaborations with musicians from outside our regular circle that we learn and discover what it means to be 21st-century artists. The pandemic gave us the time to reflect on our responsibilities as artists, and through meaningful discussions we deepened our understanding of what it means to be a music community.

Never in your life will you have access to as many resources and opportunities at the same time as when you’re a student at Schulich. You can play in a symphonic orchestra, an opera production, a contemporary ensemble, and a baroque orchestra on period instruments — or you could even be a soloist with one of these amazing ensembles! You can play chamber music at the highest level with your peers, premiere new works by students and professors, be an assistant teacher, be part of research projects for new technologies, and record with the best technicians and engineers using top-quality equipment. You have access to endless resources and scores at the music library, you can attend concerts every night if you want, and you can perform in a number of different concert halls. Prepare to broaden your horizons.

Chloé Dominguez ArtDp’03, MMus’05, DMus’09, Golden Violin Award Winner 2008-2009

The Schulich School of Music is a large school where many disciplines related to music are represented; CIRMMT helps Schulich professors and students to go beyond the boundaries of their relative fields to develop interdisciplinary projects. CIRMMT’s unique set of labs, equipment and technical expertise offers the best playground for them to tackle new research endeavours. The MMR is an incredibly large laboratory – think symphonic orchestra wide – which is equipped with both a physical and an electronics system to control acoustical features, including reverberation time.

Pick any concert of the live@CIRMMT series: you will be sure to experience something new, and in most cases literally un-heard before!

Opera is the joining of numerous individuals to create a moving expression of music and drama. All contributors add to the richness and universality of the expression. Stephen Hargreaves Music Director of Opera McGill, Associate Professor of Voice

Making and learning music both involve being a keen listener. There has to be a willingness to step outside of yourself and have sensitivity to others in the creative process. You cannot interact or comprehend what is happening musically if you’re not open and willing to listen. All music is a language that involves conversation. Within that language is expression, individuality, surprise — all elements that make us human and the musical experience that is relatable and enjoyable for everyone (the common ground). If you’re not willing to listen, then you’re not willing to partake in the conversation or learn how to communicate and you will miss out on what could be a great musical experience.

I want to be a part of the Schulich School of Music community because of its commitment to excellence. We all need to be reminded that there are places and spaces in this world where people strive to go beyond the ordinary, and in so doing, inspire us to bring that spirit into our everyday living.

We can show we care and support our students by being enthusiastic audiences for their performances — by attending concerts and recitals, and by acknowledging and celebrating their academic accomplishments. Music reminds me that we are not alone in this world; that we are most alive when in communion with others.

Music is about expressing not just beauty but also humanity. Music has the power to educate and bring us together. As humanity evolves, we learn that music has no boundaries. It is an art form that incorporates vitality and culture in ways no scientist could explain. As we continue to appreciate how our diverse community shapes our artistic voices, I want to be an active part of my art form’s revolution. Yan Li BMus’21

There are many paths you can take in a musical career — an orchestral job is not the only option. The path you end up following should align with your values, life goals, and personal definition of success. What your teacher chose to do or what your peers are currently doing might not be what works for you and your strengths!

Be resilient. A career in music requires a lot of patience and the ability to move past rejection. You get back what you give, which means a lot of putting yourself out there and making your own opportunities, especially at the beginning.

Community is vital to music. I am grateful to my colleagues, both faculty and staff, for designing this spectacular season together—and I thank the students and audience members who complete the community circle. I hope this season brochure serves as a small doorway into a big world — a musical space filled with energy, purpose, and beauty. It is our privilege and joy to share it with you. Come, bring music to life with us.
