ABOUT THE COMPETITION Focused on igniting the entrepreneurial spirit of University of St. Thomas students across campus, the Fowler Business Concept Challenge invites participants to develop a concept with potential to become a viable, high-growth business. Students from 30 academic programs are participating in this year’s event, making it a truly cross-campus competition. This week's program highlights the top 16 teams in each track (business and social venture) competing in the semifinals. Four teams from each track will advance to the finals on Friday, November 20, where they will compete for a total of $87,000 in scholarships. Each finalist wins a scholarship, with the top team in each track winning $15,000. The 2020 edition of the Fowler Concept Challenge includes 88 concepts submitted by 112 students. Forty-eight entrepreneurs and business leaders make up this year’s group of judges, including 20 that are St. Thomas alumni.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS The Fowler Business Concept Challenge is made possible through the generosity of Ron Fowler. This year, $87,000 in University of St. Thomas scholarships will be awarded to the top teams. Thank you to Ron Fowler for his family's generous financial donations that make these scholarships possible. Winner: $15,000 per team First Runner-Up: $7,500 per team Second Runner-Up: $5,000 per team Third Runner-Up: $2,500 per team Most Effective Presenter: $1,000 per team Audience Choice Award: $500 per team Students who compete in the semifinals competition but do not advance to the finals competition will be awarded a scholarship of $1,000 per team.

FINALS JUDGES BUSINESS TRACK RON FOWLER ’66, Executive Chairman, San Diego Padres; Chairman & CEO, Liquid Investments Ron Fowler is the Executive Chairman and co-owner of the San Diego Padres and the Chairman and CEO of Liquid Investments, Inc. Mr. Fowler has extensive experience in the beverage distribution industry, and has chaired or been a member of numerous corporate and community boards over the past 40 years. His special interest is higher education and as such he is the founding chair of the San Diego State University Campanile Foundation, chairman emeritus of University of San Diego’s Board of Trustees, and is chairman emeritus of the San Diego Sports Association. Mr. Fowler is actively involved with and supportive of his alma mater, the University of St. Thomas, where he served on the Board of Trustees and Athletic Advisory Board. Mr. Fowler is the founder of today’s competition, the Fowler Business Concept Challenge, which he began in 2009 to advance the entrepreneurial mission of the university.

JODEE KOZLAK ’85, Founder & CEO, Kozlak Capital Partners, LLC Jodee Kozlak is a transformational leader with deep expertise in business strategy and leadership. She founded Kozlak Capital Partners in 2017 to work with CEOs and Senior teams on their most pressing strategic issues, and for private investing. She is an Advisor to many public and private companies and serves on the boards of C.H. Robinson Worldwide, MGIC, Leslie’s, and Aspen Dental. Ms.Kozlak worked with Alibaba Group from February 2016 to November 2017 as its Global SVP to help set the direction for rapid expansion outside of China through organic and M&A growth. From 2004-2016, she was EVP and CHRO of Target Corporation, and also held roles as General Counsel for International Business, Labor and Employment, and served as Trustee of the Target Foundation. Before Target she was a law partner at Greene Espel, PLLP, and started her career at Arthur Andersen & Co. Ms. Kozlak is currently an advisory board member to the Stanford Center on Longevity and a Trustee for the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Minnesota.

DAMIAN NOVAK ‘05, Owner, Rabbit Hole Equity, LLC Damian Novak is owner of Rabbit Hole Equity, LLC. During his career, he has started over 23 companies. Mr. Novak has extensive knowledge and experience in the field of structuring healthcare related businesses through personal acquisitions, management of healthcare facilities and consulting to outside firms. He is highly experienced in structuring creative joint ventures of hospital facilities with physician partners. Mr. Novak is a member/agitator with MOJO Minnesota – an innovation co-operative comprised of like-minded business leaders working to fuel entrepreneurship and reignite Minnesota’s culture of innovation.

FINALS JUDGES BUSINESS TRACK ANGIE SELDEN ‘87, CEO, American Public Education Angela Selden was appointed Chief Executive Officer of American Public Education in September 2019. Ms. Selden brings more than 30 years of experience in technology and technology-enabled services, both within private-equity and publicly traded environments, and has deep experience executing business transformation initiatives for Fortune 500 clients. She was previously CEO and board member of DIGARC, a leading education technology provider to higher education institutions. Ms. Selden serves on the University of St. Thomas, Opus College of Business Strategic Board of Governors and was honored as the University's Entrepreneur of the Year for 2012. Ms. Selden currently serves as Chairman of DinerIQ and as a board member of TalentWave.

ANN WINBLAD ‘75, Co-Founder and Managing Director, Hummer Winblad Venture Partners Ann Winblad is a Managing Director and Co-Founder of Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, the first venture firm focused exclusively on software. In her 30-year career as a venture capitalist, Ms. Winblad’s firm has launched over 160 enterprise software companies and led investments that pioneered successful companies across the enterprise software sector. She currently serves as a director of Ace Metrix and OptiMine. Ms. Winblad is a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of St. Thomas and a Board member of the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation.

FINALS JUDGES SOCIAL VENTURE TRACK ANN HERZOG DREWISKE, Founder, ScaleUp Ann Herzog Drewiske has over 25 years of nonprofit advancement experience. Her expertise also includes good governance practices, corporate relations, communications and capital campaigns. She has spent her career with a heart on making the Twin Cities a better place for ALL to live and work. Prior to launching ScaleUp, Ms. Herzog Drewiske was the Executive Director of Social Venture Partners, she also had a successful career as director of national advancement for Jeremiah Program, and advancement at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management, Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and Twin Cities Public Television.

BRIAN MARK, Owner, BSM Equities, Inc. In 2016, Brian Mark founded BSM Equities, Inc where he currently serves as owner. In addition, Mr. Mark has spent the last 35 years as managing partner of BSM Real Property LLC. He has a passion for business development and has seen great success investing in startups and emerging companies through his equity and property businesses. Mr. Mark is also chairman and treasurer of Jajja Wellness Tonics, partnering in this business with two University of St. Thomas graduates. He serves as an equity partner and board member for Virginia Tile, where he also spent 34 years as the president and owner. Mr. Mark was board chair of the Ridgeview Foundation and has served in various capacities the past 15 years and most currently as vice chairman of the Ridgeview Medical Center board. He also serves on the boards of Bailey Nursery, Pinky Swear Foundation, Tressman Companies, and Matchless Plastics, Inc.

HARRY “PADDY” MCNEELY, III, CEO, The Meritex Company Paddy McNeely is the Chairman and CEO of The Meritex Company, a 104-year-old privately held, family-owned real estate investment and management firm with more than 90 properties in nine major U.S. markets. Mr. McNeely leads the development and execution of Meritex’s real estate strategy. Before becoming CEO in 2001, he was Chief Administrative Officer for the company and a manager of various company properties for 10 years. Prior to working at Meritex, he was vice president of National City Bank of Minneapolis for 10 years. Mr. McNeely chairs the University of St. Thomas Family Business Center Board.

FINALS JUDGES SOCIAL VENTURE TRACK JILL PUTMAN ‘96, CFO, Jamf Jill Putman is a globally experienced financial executive with a full range of financial and leadership expertise. She has spent the last six years as the CFO of Jamf, where she leads the company’s finance, accounting, and investor relations. Ms. Putman is responsible for Human Resources and other operations functions. Prior to Jamf, she served as CFO at Kroll Ontrack, a private-equity owned e-discovery firm. She also spent time as Vice President of finance at Secure Computing, and began her career with KPMG, serving in its audit practice.

ELAINE RASMUSSEN, CEO, Social Impact Strategies Group Elaine Rasmussen is founder and CEO of Social Impact Strategies Group (SISG), a Black/Native-led certified B-corp social enterprise. SISG provides social impact design and economic development consulting, education workshops for investors and second-stage businesses, entrepreneurs, and produces the annual ConnectUP! MN Summer which promotes and grows inclusive and equitable entrepreneur ecosystems that drive positive, sustainable, social impact grounded in economic justice. In 2018, Ms. Rasmussen was featured in Fearless Commerce Magazine and in 2019, she was awarded the Achieve! Innovation Award by the National Association of Women Business Owners. She currently serves on the boards of MNVest, MDI, Nexus Community Partners, Swift Foundation and the Executive Committee for the for the Association for Black Economic Power, the first Black-led credit union in North Minneapolis. Ms. Rasmussen is a Cordes Fellow and RSF Social Finance Integrated Capital Fellow.

ABOUT RON FOWLER The Fowler Business Concept Challenge is named in recognition of alumnus Ron Fowler ‘66, Chairman and CEO of Liquid Investments Inc., whose generous gift to the University has made this and future competitions possible. We remain grateful to Ron and his family for their generosity. Recognized as an industry leader, Fowler has chaired or been a member of numerous North American beverage distributor corporate and association boards over the past 40 years. Some of these include Miller Brewing Co., Columbia Distributing Co., Beer Capital Distributing Company, Inc., and Brick Brewing Co. Ltd. in Canada. Fowler’s special interest is higher education. The Fowler College of Business at San Diego State University was named for him and his wife after a significant challenge gift to the university. Fowler was also a primary financial contributor and chaired the successful campaign to create the Entrepreneurial Management Center at SDSU. He was the chair of the Board of Trustees at the University of San Diego and was recently a member of the Board of Trustees at the University of St. Thomas. An avid sports enthusiast, Fowler is the co-owner and executive chairman of the San Diego Padres. He was the founding chair of the San Diego International Sports Council, chair of the San Diego Super Bowl Task Force and of the 2003 Super Bowl Host Committee. In 2009, he was named a Distinguished American by the National Football Foundation. As a community and civic leader, Fowler received the 2012 First Chairman’s Award from the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. He was named Big Brothers/Big Sisters of San Diego County’s Person of the Year in 2012. In 2008, he received the John F. Cade Award from the University of St. Thomas’ Opus College of Business, recognizing his spirit of entrepreneurship and ethics in the way he conducts business. Fowler won the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University in 2014 for his leadership and service to St. Thomas, the community and his field of work.

We've got three ways to keep the idea alive: The St. Thomas Business Plan Competition The Schulze Entrepreneurship Challenge The Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge Business Plan Competition Take your business concept to the St. Thomas Business Plan Competition. This event is open to all St. Thomas students who wish to further pursue their ideas and ready them for an actual business launch! Get the mentoring needed to submit a full business plan by Tuesday, January 26, 2021. Then, five finalists will pitch on February 19, 2021 for a shot at $10,000 cash! Schulze Entrepreneurship Challenge Students should also consider submitting a business plan to the Schulze Entrepreneurship Challenge for a chance at the top prize of $75,000 as part of our e-Fest weekend! This national competition brings 25 top undergraduate business plans together for a weekend of fun and more than $200,000 in cash prizes! The application deadline is March 7, 2021. Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge New to St. Thomas is the Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge. Students develop entrepreneurial skills and join a growing movement of global entrepreneurs passionate about social change. In 2019, with the generous support of Ron and Alexis Fowler, the Challenge was renamed and a joint venture with the University of St. Thomas and University of San Diego. Round 1 submissions are due early spring 2021. The top two teams will represent St. Thomas at the Global Finals in June 2021, for a chance to win up to $50,000 in seed funding.
