ROCKLIN UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Spring View Middle School Site Council Minutes November 4, 2008 Members Present: Marty Flowers, Patty Golditch, Kristen Beck, Lynne Meiers, Dawn Infurna-Bean, Sabrina Murphy, Rachna Condos, Sharon Barker, Andrew Marshall and Chad Widger. Visitors: Called to Order: 3:48 p.m. by Sabrina Murphy Information: Student Representative Presentation – Marty Flowers 1. 2.

Movie Night – 100 students attended. Successful snack sales. Red Ribbon Week – Great student participation finishing with Orange/Black Day on 10/31.

Social Studies and AVID Presentation – Richard Carruth New textbook adoption: 8th – U.S. History & 7th – Medieval to Modern Times a. History Alive textbooks and teacher binders still relevant b. Textbook change should not impact future CST Testing 2. California State Standards for Social Studies reviewed a. Sample tests distributed and examples provided of how each teacher is addressing the standards 3. AVID a. 2 – 8th grade classes this year (64 students) – criteria used for selection GPA, socio-economic level, parent education, test scores & interviews. b. Students take in lieu of AR, but still have a reading goal. c. Once in program – take throughout high school which provides extra support. d. Field Trips to Sierra College, William Jessup, Davis and Sac. State e. Prepares students for college by organizing higher order thinking skills, challenging them to take AP courses and to qualify for 4 year colleges straight from high school. (90% of students go to junior college or college) f. Tutorials created by Mr. Imrie and Mr. Werner 1. Students learn via group activities to help others through questions 2. Prepares students for high school AP courses – higher critical thinking Art Presentation – Larry Weiss 1.

Two new textbooks: 7th - Personal Journey & 8th grade - Community Connections Semester Course – Course Syllabus, Scoring Rubric, & Examples of Elements of Art and Principles of Design distributed. Examples of student work reflecting 7 Elements of Art: line, shape, value, space, texture, color and form and 7 Principles of Design: unity, balance, emphasis, contrast, movement, rhythm and pattern. New course addition – ceramic plates. Grading based on the following areas: following directions, neatness, creative thought, and timeliness and extra credit is always an option.


P.E. Presentation – Cassie Hartley 1. Peterson/Snell – 7th grade which focuses on individual sports and Hartley/Brewer – 8th grade which focuses on team sports. 2. Boys/girls are split- boy’s focus on weights and girls on circuit training. Focus on fitness not just sports. 3. Weekly cardio endurance training 4. First rate facilities – track, basketball court, gym, weight room 5. Running club during winter – twice weekly off campus 3-4 mile run (35 participants so far!) 6. Cross Country placed 3rd of 13 schools East Coast Presentation – Cassie Hartley 1. Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York 2. SV’s 22nd year offering non-school sponsored trip(Hartley’s 7th year) 3. Program through World Strides – 2nd year a. Cost: approximately $2600 b. Helping Hands scholarships available c. Several fundraising opportunities throughout the year d. Itinerary based on feedback from students 4. Application process includes a letter of intent, 4 teacher recommendations, & grade check 5. Hartley creates a personal itinerary – experience each year changes with group of students. a. President’s memorials, Holocaust memorial, Constitution, Liberty Bell, Ball Game in D.C., Twin Towers, Kennedy Center, Ground Zero/St. Paul’s Church, Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, Trump buildings, Musical – “The Lion King.” b. Trip includes all chartered bus rides/drop offs, 3 meals daily, nice accommodations and night security. Committee Updates: 1. Many successes and rewards - AR Goal Celebration, 100 Merit (only 27 not eligible), Nightmare on Puberty Street, and Academic/Behavior Rewards – Dollar Tree prizes & In & Out Lunches. DeNoble Presentation and 1st Semester Celebration coming soon.
