SCIENCE CULTURE EXPERIMENT
FOREWORD
We opened our doors to the public on 19 January 2024!
We welcomed you all with CARBON, our sixth exhibition-season, and in August, we changed to SCI560, an exhibition about science in the city.
Sci560 is developed with support from the Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies and is a convergence of two ambitions: Rohini Nilekani, writer and philanthropist and a member of our Board of Directors has, for a long while, wanted to bridge the gap between the citizens of Bengaluru and its research institutions. On the other hand, together with five teams drawn from across institutions - Rajesh Gopakumar, director of the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences and Mukund Thattai, professor at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, and I have explored the possibility a citywide science festival before the pandemic laid that plan to rest.
Sci560 has allowed us to build bridges with major research and cultural institutions in the city: participating institutions have loaned us self-selected objects from their history, and also adopted a weekend for programming to bring their current research into the public domain. We will refresh the exhibition early next year to explore for insights into the future of research in the city.
We have also hosted three traveling exhibitions in 2024: in February we hosted “Critical Zones,” from the ZKM – Centre for Media Art, Karlsruhe, and supported by the Goethe Institute Bengaluru; in August we hosted “Songlines,” from the National Museum of Australia, and supported by the Australian Consulate-General in Bengaluru in August; and most recently, in December, we are hosting “From the Moon to Mars: Italy in Space Exploration,” supported by the Italian ConsulateGeneral in Bengaluru.
We have closed a momentous year for Science Gallery Bengaluru and look forward to the future of a new public space for science.

01 PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT
From December 2023 to December 2024, we continued to engage diverse audiences through our exhibitions, programs, and outreach initiatives. Our sixth exhibition-season, CARBON, ran from 1 August 2023 to 14 July 2024, delving into the complex and critical role of carbon in shaping our lives and environment. With over 266,000 visitors and 9,740 program participants, CARBON was a successful season for us, garnering widespread recognition through 82 national and international media outlets, including The Economist and The Hindustan Times. This season also marked new milestones for us with the introduction of our first-ever film festival and the highly anticipated food festival, Namma Oota.
In August 2024, we unveiled our seventh exhibition season, Sci560, celebrating Bengaluru’s identity as a Science City. Spanning two floors and featuring 31 objects from 14 local institutions, Sci560 highlights the interplay of military, industrial, and academic research that has shaped the city’s scientific and technological legacy. Key collaborations with institutions such as the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), the
Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), and the Raman Research Institute (RRI) were instrumental in presenting exhibits that connect Bengaluru’s rich history to its future as a global hub for innovation. We organised a series of weekend programs in collaboration with these institutions, where scholars engaged the public through workshops, masterclasses, lab visits, and lectures.
We hosted several traveling exhibitions in collaboration with cultural and scientific institutions, covering a variety of themes such as the Anthropocene, coexistence, conservation, and space exploration. These include Critical Zones in partnership with the ZKM Centre for Media and Art and the Goethe-Institut Bangalore, The Great Elephant Migration in collaboration with the Coexistence Consortium, Walking Through a Songline in association with the Australian High Commission and the National Museum of Australia, and From Moon to Mars in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy.
Beyond our exhibitions, we expanded our public engagement by participating in major events, including the Bangalore Tech Summit, IISc Open Day, NCBS Open Day, and the India
Science Festival, among others. These efforts reflect our ongoing commitment to fostering dialogue and collaboration at the intersection of science, culture, and society.
EXHIBITION-SEASON CARBON

Our sixth exhibition season, CARBON, ran from 1 August 2023 to 14 July 2024. It explored the critical and complex role of carbon in our lives and its impact on the environment. We invited filmmakers, artists, biologists, chemists, and journalists to investigate how carbon sustains life on Earth.
The exhibition featured 37 exhibits and 64 public programmes, engaging a total of 2,66,000 visitors. We also hosted a film festival at the Bangalore International Centre and launched our first food festival Namma Oota at the Science Gallery Bengaluru premises. Additionally, we hosted an online version of the exhibition, which included a Media Lounge where visitors could explore related books, games, and podcasts.
CARBON received coverage in 82 national and international media publications, including The Economist,
The New Indian Express, and The Hindustan Times. The exhibition will also be showcased at the Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa.
To further expand the reach of CARBON, we developed a touring exhibition module comprising interactive exhibits, recordings of live programmes, and the Exhibition-ina-Box—a portable format designed for both formal and informal learning. This module was showcased at the Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa, India.

EXHIBITION-SEASON
Sci560
24.08.2024 – Ongoing
Sci560, our seventh exhibition season, opened on 24 August 2024, aiming to connect Bengaluru’s citizens with the city’s rich history of science and research. Featuring 33 objects on loan from 14 institutions, the exhibition spans two floors and explores themes tied to Bengaluru’s identity as a military-industrial-academic complex. The exhibition cuts across three key areas—military, industrial, and academic—and examines how these sectors have intertwined, shaping the city’s scientific and technological development.
Bengaluru’s dynamic identity has evolved from a garden city to an industrial hub, and now, a global tech and startup capital. Sci560 delves into the city's layered scientific history, showcasing historical objects from research institutions, archives, and university laboratories. These artifacts, presented alongside
multimedia and archival material, illuminate the ideas, individuals, and institutions that shaped Bengaluru’s scientific landscape.
We complement the exhibition with weekly public programs, ranging from lectures and masterclasses to workshops and films. These events allow visitors, particularly young adults, to engage with scientists and researchers on topics explored in the exhibition. Through these programs, we foster a deeper understanding of the scientific forces that have shaped the city and continue to inspire public engagement with science.

02 LEARNING AND MENTORSHIP
In 2023–2024, we have focused our energies on refining our existing Mentorship Initiatives and Learning Resources, in order to create a broad and comprehensive framework for our young-adult focused programmes. With the Gallery opening to the public in January 2024, we were able to see the mediators in action, and received feedback that their role was critical to the CARBON's success. Building on this, we are continuing the format of full-time and part-time mediators. We inducted our next batch of mediators for the exhibition-season Sci560, and are continuing to experiment with new ways of training and learning.
We have also created Student Learning Experiences for students to explore our exhibitions. We conduct exhibition walkthroughs for large student groups, with discussions and activities. Another new programme launched in 2024 are the Externships. These are meant for high school and college students to understand art-science practices.
In order to consolidate our Mentorship Initiatives, we have also broken down our offerings into three main categories—Mentorship Programmes, Learning Programmes, and Learning Resources. While the first two are primarily in-person, young-adult focused, the latter is meant to provide students and educators access to interdisciplinary learning tools which can be used in classrooms. Our Learning Resources will soon be shared with gram panchayat libraries and schools across the state of Karnataka, through our recent MoAs with the Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, and the Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of Karnataka.
MENTORSHIP PROGRAMMES
Our mentorship programmes are primarily designed for 18 – 30 year olds, and are 6 – 14 month long, with training periods and a focus on peer-to-peer mentorship.
MEDIATOR PROGRAMME
Science Gallery mediators are the public face of the gallery. Primarily, a mediator’s role is to converse with visitors about the exhibition and the topics explored in our themed seasons. Mediators are selected through an application process from our target age group of 18 – 30 years. Since they are often the first and only point of contact for visitors to the Gallery, mediators must be able to listen, provoke questions, tell stories, and drive visitor experiences throughout the exhibition season. Speaking to a mediator also provides the opportunity for each visitor to bring their personal insight and experiences into a conversation sparked by the exhibits, events, and programmes. SGB mediators also plan and execute walkthroughs for large student groups, facilitating learning in an informal setting.
The SGB Mediator Programme is divided into two sections:
i. Full-time Mediator Programme
The full-time mediators spend 5 days a week at the gallery, for a period of 12 – 14 months. As members of the larger SGB team, they also support other teams in creating experiences inside and outside the gallery. This programme not only trains young adults in the core skills required for mediating, but
also focuses on building other skills in writing, design thinking, and public engagement. The mediators get to interact closely with the rest of the SGB team, getting insights into the creation, curation, and production of exhibitions at the interface of science and art. They are also able to create and run outreach programmes that extend the reach of SGB and the exhibition-season.
ii. Part-time Mediator Programme
The part-time mediators are young adults who are in college or working, and can spend their weekends at SGB. The structure of this Programme is similar to previous exhibitions, and focuses on training the mediators to hone their skills in facilitation, communication, and critical and interdisciplinary thinking.
MEDIATOR PROGRAMME: CARBON
Continuing our Mediator Programme for CARBON (June 2023 – July 2024), we had both full-time and part-time mediators to converse with visitors, conduct student walkthroughs, and interpret the exhibition in new and interesting ways.

On 31 May 2024, we wrapped up our first fulltime mediator programme for the exhibitionseason CARBON. Over 1 year, our mediators trained to drive exhibition experiences on the floor, mediated at the metro stations and the gallery, and created learning tools for other young adults.
Prior to the end of the programme, we conducted multiple surveys, debrief meetings, and feedback sessions with the mediators, to be used in designing and planning the next mediator programme.
"The mediator programme is a unique opportunity to work in public engagement with science. It is a space to learn outside an academic institution, meet a lot of interesting people, and become a better communicator."
Vedika Kalra, Full-time mediator at CARBON
MEDIATOR PROGRAMME: Sci560
During Sci560, we furthered our two-part model for public engagement through the Mediator Programme. We continue to have full-time and part-time mediators, in a similar model to the CARBON programme.
Training
The training for the mediators is divided into three main sections:
1. SGB team training
The SGB team works with the mediators to facilitate training and practice mediation sessions. These are crucial for the mediators to grasp the ethos of SGB, and to understand the exhibition-season and their role within it.
2. Sci560 101
The Sci560 101 series was a set of lectures, discussions, and experiences put together for the mediators, that served as an exploration of the themes of the exhibitionseason. This introduced the mediators to larger narratives around it, to prepare them for mediation. During the Sci560 101s, we introduced mediators to Bengaluru with walks of the city, spoke about the history of astronomy in the city, and contextualised it as a military-industrial-academic complex.

EXTERNSHIPS
01
May 2024 – 01 June 2024
To offer young adults in High School or College/University exposure to artscience practices at SGB, we started a new mentorship programme called 'Externships'. These are month-long programmes aimed at exposing young adults to the back-end of SGB's work. It is a learning opportunity where selected applicants shadow the different SGB teams, engage with the ongoing exhibition-season, and create outcomes to share their experiences.
In this month-long externship, externs have the opportunity to work with any three of six teams at Science Gallery Bengaluru:
• Communications
• Design
• Learning
• Production
• Programmes
• Research
After working for three weeks with these teams, externs spend the last week reflecting and documenting their experiences in the form of a report or article.
Number of externs: 2
LEARNING PROGRAMMES
Our learning programmes are one-time engagements with a diverse group of young adults, to expose them to new research methodologies, skills, and ways of thinking. These are usually thematic, around the ongoing exhibition-season.
STUDENT LEARNING EXPERIENCES
To encourage student groups to visit the gallery and the exhibition, we created guided walkthroughs of both CARBON and Sci560, complete with activities and discussions. The mediators planned and conducted two to three hour long walkthroughs where they took students through the exhibition. These walkthroughs are carefully created based on the responses by teachers, and the age group, language, and concerns of the student group.
CARBON
TOTAL NUMBER OF ATTENDEES: 4600
TOTAL NUMBER OF WALKTHROUGH: 156
TOTAL NUMBER OF INSTITUTIONS: 71

LEARNING RESOURCES
Our Learning Resources are created for young adults to explore either by themselves or in classrooms/non-formal learning spaces. They draw from our exhibitions and encourage a critical engagement with the topic at hand.
Our Learning Resources have been recognised as important to further the access to non-formal, interdisciplinary educational tools. We have signed two Memorandum of Agreements with the Government of Karnataka to share our resources with gram panchayat libraries (Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj) and schools (Department of School Education and Literacy) across the state.
1. Activity Handbooks
Activity Handbooks are do-it-yourself accompaniments to our exhibitions. Building upon the themes explored in our exhibits and programming, these Handbooks encourage students to conduct experiments, activities, and observations on their own, or in the classroom as a group. The Handbooks, consisting of 10 activities each, foster lively, tactile, exploratory ways to engage with the theme.
Suitable for: Ages 12 – 18
2. Open Courseware
The freely accessible Science Gallery Bengaluru Courseware brings together resources from our exhibition-seasons to facilitate non-evaluative, open-ended, and interdisciplinary learning. The courseware reflects our commitment to public education, and expands the existing knowledge commons.
Suitable for: Ages 14 – 30
3. Exhibition-in-a-Box
As the name suggests, this learning tool distills our exhibition themes and concepts into a small portable box that can be kept in libraries, classrooms, or other teaching spaces.
Suitable for: Ages 14 – 30
4. Teacher Orientation Handbooks
SGB provides manuals for teachers who are interested in bringing interdisciplinary learning tools as a part of their pedagogy. These resources are anchored around our exhibition-season themes.
Suitable for: Early career/ interested educators
OUTREACH
Agastya International Foundation: Train the Trainer Camp
Dates: 03 April 2024 – 05 April 2024
Partner: Agastya International Foundation
Venue: Agastya Centre, Kuppam and Science Gallery Bengaluru Metrics: 65 Master trainers
Each year, Agastya International conducts training sessions for its master trainers. This year, with a focus on climate change education, we partnered with them to talk about our exhibitionseason CARBON. Two members of the SGB team, along with a climate change expert, Jobin Varghese, went to the Agastya campus in Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh. The SGB team introduced them to our Open Courseware, which consists of five modules around carbon and climate change. On the last day of this collaborative training period, the master trainers visited SGB and were taken on a walkthrough of CARBON, where we also showcased the activities we conduct with student groups.
03 MEDIA PRESENCE
We received over 130 press features during this period. Our work was covered by all leading Bangalore dailies, including The Hindu, Deccan Herald, The Times of India, and The New Indian Express, and even gained international recognition through a feature in The Economist.
We also organised exclusive press previews, inviting journalists from across the country to the opening of our exhibitions as part of our efforts to build long-term relationships with the media. Regular press releases were issued to support travelling exhibitions.
"INDIA’S EDUCATION SYSTEM BUILDS AND REINFORCES A VIEW THAT THE ARTS AND SCIENCES ARE WHOLLY SEPARATE. THE SCIENCE GALLERY HOPES, INSTEAD, TO BRIDGE THAT CHASM, PROVOKING NEW QUESTIONS AND INSPIRING NEW IDEAS. THERE IS A LITTLE “HOW”, IN OTHER WORDS, AND A LOT OF “WOW!”."

04 OVERVIEW OF SCIENCE GALLERY NETWORK
2024 marked a significant milestone for the Network with the official openings of Science Gallery Bengaluru in January and Science Gallery Monterrey in November. The Network now has four fully operational galleries open in dedicated spaces.
The Directors’ Forum and SGI Board Strategy meeting in October, hosted by Science Gallery Bengaluru, served as an essential platform for advancing collaboration across the Network. The combination of exceptional programming, growing academic and youth engagement, and the transformational potential of our informal learning programmes are causes for pride. Our first Network Strategy was developed by the Network Directors and concentrates on five key areas for 2025-2027:
• Developing sustainable exhibitions and touring
• Transforming interdisciplinary learning locally and globally
• Leading in nontraditional art-science and interdisciplinary research
• Leading in art-science practice through key publications
• Amplifying the activities of the network and foster connections between stakeholders.
The Global Classroom initiative was launched as a collaboration between the Bengaluru and Melbourne gallerie, and will be further developed with other locations next year. The Global Classroom aims to expand educational access beyond borders, empowering the next generation as global change-makers, and was launched with the first Teacher Development Workshop in September.
Science Gallery International supported the first staff exchange between Bengaluru and Melbourne. staff from each gallery spend a fortnight in each location, meeting colleagues, collaborating and developing ways to co-create opportunities for engaging students in STEAM learning. It was very successful, and more exchanges will follow in 2025.
“The staff exchange at Science Gallery Melbourne was an illuminating experience that underscored the potential of crosscultural collaboration. Engaging in immersive dialogues with colleagues expanded our perspectives on building a truly global network that leverages our unique positionalities and local contexts. The exchange offered valuable insights into the structural dynamics of sister galleries and highlighted innovative ways to break down disciplinary silos, especially in engaging young adults.”
Gayatri Manu, Science Gallery Bengaluru
We are now at a point where we can truly realise the network effect, and further amplify its impact. Our new membership campaign in 2024 opened up other avenues of membership, which we are well positioned to realise in 2025-2026. Our latest Network promotional video is available at this link.
Science Gallery Atlanta at Emory University in preparation for their Resilient Earth season, kicked offwith an Ecocommunity Fair in May. The event provided a platform for local organisations and artists to address climate change through creativity and activism. The Resilient Earth exhibition, launched in September at their new Northlake Mall location in collaboration with Accenture, featured installations on themes such as plastic waste, flood-resilient designs, and human adaptability to climate change.
Science Gallery Bengaluru launched its permanent building with the CARBON exhibition, exploring the element through diverse global perspectives. The Critical Zones exhibition, part of the CARBON season, examined Earth's "Critical Zones" with over 25 international and Indian artists. The Namma Oota food festival celebrated sustainability through innovative cooking and food startups. In August, the gallery presented Walking through a Songline, a collaboration with the Australian Consulate-General, immersing visitors in Aboriginal cultural traditions through digital projections. The year-long mediator programme, focused on carbon education, trained a diverse cohort to engage with visitors both in the gallery and through outreach activities. In September, the gallery introduced SCI560: Science in the City, showcasing Bengaluru's role in science and technology.
The Gallery was featured in an Economist article in August entitled Why A New Art Gallery In BangaloreIs Important for Indian Science.

The year concluded with the opening of Vital Signs: another world is possible, exploring how the health of the natural world - from our waterways to our atmosphere and the ocean floor - is intimately connected to our own health and wellbeing, while sharing the ways people are shaping liveable and hopeful futures, in London and around the world.
Science Gallery Monterrey at Tecnológico de Monterrey officially opened on 27 November 2024 with the Brave New Future exhibition. This the first Science Gallery in Latin America, and is based in the Expedition building - the first in an ambitious new innovation district at the university. The
exhibition encourages reflection on how we can imagine and strive for brighter futures, through diverse disciplines and forms of imagination. Monterrey now has a full-time team of three, including a new Communications and Community Engagement Coordinator. Science Gallery Melbourne at the University of Melbourne, provided several interdisciplinary experiences designed to inspire the next generation of problem solvers through two exhibitions, thirteen public events and an annual program for school and University students. Their programming explored ethical dilemmas between natural and artificial systems in Not Natural and First Nations fire management practices in Sediment Cores. The SCI-FI: Mythologies Transformed, a collaboration with ArtScience Museum Singapore, explored the intersection of science fiction, ancient philosophy, and mythology, celebrating the work of Asian and First Nations women artists. The gallery also delivered a vibrant program of activities to bolster the Victorian arts and culture and STEM sectors, including collaborative programming with City of Melbourne, Now or Never festival, Melbourne ArtsCentre and Asia TOPA festival and Melbourne Design Week, and the Biotech STEAM Careers Forum connected students with professionals in biotechnology.
