Forthcoming Titles History of the Mauser Rifle in Chile Mauser Chileno Modelo 1895, 1912, and 1935 David Nielsen As part of its rise as a regional South American power, Chile chose to emulate the highly successful Prussian military system in the last decades of the 19th century. Prior conflicts and the prospect of war with Argentina, which came to a head in the early 1890s, can be seen as the pretext for Chile's purchase of "Prussian" military equipment, including Mauser rifles and Krupp cannons. This book summarizes important regional events, while also offering a general historical overview of Mauser developments. It will then proceed to expose the particulars of Chile's Mausers, purchases that resulted in the Model 1895, 1912, and 1935. Also detailed are the technical specifics of each of these three models and the historical events surrounding their acquisition. The result is the first comprehensive attempt at documenting these important artifacts and events, which will, it is hoped, initiate further research into this fascinating topic. Chasing Time Vintage Wristwatches for the Discerning Collector Alistair Gibbons The early 2000s were an important period, spanning a time when mechanical watches had quite rightly retaken their place in the world market. The collection in this book is a step into the world of vintage watch collecting, with a range of photographs, intricate research, and accessible reference material that will intrigue both the casual and avid enthusiast. The collection showcases some of the most interesting, luxurious, and functional twentieth-century (1930-1980) mechanical timepieces ever to be produced, including Heuer's Autavia, Rolex's Submariner, Gallet's MultiChron, Zenith's De Luca, and the Unviersal Space Compax. A chapter on how to distinguish transparent and black diamond imitations from real natural diamonds has been added. The chapter on synthetic diamonds has eleven new pages, seven of which are photo pages that help trade members identify HPHT- and CVD-grown diamonds with magnification, fluorescence and crossed Polaroid filters. Photos and information have been updated in the chapters on fancy colour diamonds, diamond fluorescence, diamond treatments, recutting diamonds and antique cuts & jewelry. Arab Chest Sheila Unwin, Terence Clark This is an exhaustive study of a piece of furniture that has been used in the Arab world for centuries, and on the East African coast since the early 1800s. The Arab chest caught the attention of expatriates and travellers throughout these regions, and by the mid-20th century it had become a collector's item in the West. The author, Sheila Unwin, first came across the chests in East Africa in the early l950s. Since then she has been determined to discover their provenance and unravel their stylistic origins. This journey of detection is reflected in her historical overviews, which cover the early Arab trading networks, Arabs and Persians in East Africa, the Gulf and Oman, the Mughals in India, and the early explorations and trading expeditions of the Portuguese, Dutch and British from East Africa to the Far East. Her study of these enables her to trace the cultural influences that have combined to produce the chests, and to chart their complex origins. The book is also a guide to the classification, care and cleaning of chests. It is lavishly illustrated with archive and contemporary photographs and maps, while line drawings demonstrate the differences in classification and type of chests and fittings. The English Revolver A Collectors’ Guide to the Guns, their History and Values George Prescott Famous throughout the nineteenth century for the quality of its products, the English revolver industry began a steady decline after WWI from which it never recovered. Apart from the famous Webley service revolvers, many products of this important industry are little known outside of the auction house and sale room. This book sets out to rectify that situation, describing Adam's and Tranter's revolvers, as valued in their day as any of Webley's products, and including guns from the more obscure makers neglected by previous writers. In particular, the chapter on military revolvers is one of the most important sections of the book, beginning with the British government's early purchase of Colt's percussion weapon and concluding with the Webley Service revolvers, strikingly familiar to many who served in the British Army in both World Wars. Finally, many of the guns are pictured here for the first time, a number having been photographed especially for this book.
About the Author: George Prescott has been writing and publishing upon a variety of subjects, including firearms, since 1993. He lives in Kent, and currently writes about English weapons for Classic Arms & Militaria magazine, amongst other things. Behind the Brooch A Closer Look at Backs, Catches, and Pin Stems Lorena Angulo The focus of this book is on the side of the brooch that usually isn't noticed: the reverse. When we encounter an attractive piece of jewelry, our instinct is to admire the front, but when we turn it around, it often reveals a secret. The author lets us in on that secret, typically only shared between the maker and the wearer. Clever brooch makers often adorn the back with items meant to complement the front, or the backside may have a unique, intricate design all its own. When you flip a brooch over in your hand you may find a surprise message, a hidden pattern, or even an unlikely foreign implement. The result is a better understanding of the artist's abilities and personality. Now, you can judge for yourself what the 128 artists respresented in this volume had in mind, and, if you are a jewelry maker, you may be inspired to leave your own unique mark. Greg Rivera, Quang Le, Mike Essl This book features the largest collection of Mr T memorabilia in the world, including over 150 homemade soft sculpture dolls collected and documented over the past 25 years. The dolls were made from a pattern book by Miss Martha Originals from Gadsden, Alabama, that in 1983 could be bought at thousands of craft stores in the country including Wal-Mart. Inspired by the Cabbage Patch Kid craze of the 1980s, the dolls were made in an unknown amount but probably exist in the thousands. Each doll is a labour of love and represents the skill level of each artisan. As modernday folk art they have been recognised as such by the American Folk Art Museum in NYC, and they have toured the world in art exhibitions, including in NYC, San Francisco, Toronto, and Paris, France. 224 pages February 2019 HB 9780764357244 ÂŁ33.00 Schiffer Publishing Gazelle Book Services Ltd /+44(0) 1524 528500 / sales@gazellebookservices.co.uk / www.gazellebookservices.co.uk
