New Perspectives on Handel’s Music

Essays in Honour of Donald Burrows Edited by DAV I D V IC KER S Much like a baroque ‘drama per musica’, this book is divided into a three parts. Part I introduces the principal characters: Handel’s musical works in different genres and diverse aspects of his musical style and creative practices; part II develops complications to the plot: there is new information about the authenticity and chronology of works and analysis of musical, literary and documentary sources; part III brings all of these scholarly strands together and leads to a set of outcomes: a fresh examination of the broader context of Handel’s music in relation to his contemporaries and collaborators sits alongside reception studies. This collection will be essential reading for baroque music admirers, performers, experts and students.

Medieval Cantors and their Craft Music, Liturgy and the Shaping of History, 800-1500

Edited by KAT I E ANN M ARI E BU GY I S , A .B. KR A E BE L & M ARGOT E . FAS SL E R Cantors made unparalleled contributions to the way time was understood and history was remembered in the medieval Latin West. The contributions here seek to address the fundamental question of how the range of cantors’ activities can help us to understand the many different ways in which the past was written and, in the liturgy, celebrated across the middle ages. William Byrd (c. 15401623), England’s premier Renaissance composer, devoted considerable attention to the poetry and prose of his native language. This book, the first full-length study specifically devoted to Byrd’s English-texted music, provides a close reading of all of the works he published in the late 1580s, constituting nearly half of his total song output. It delves into the musical, political, literary, and, specifically, the sequential qualities of Byrd’s 1588 and 1589 published collections as a whole, revealing, explaining, and interpreting an overall grand narrative. Smith...offers a brilliant, rich, provocative examination of Byrd’s manipulation of his song texts-how he organized them and conveyed hidden meanings and a grand narrative to his Catholic, recusant friends. Highly recommended. C HOIC E

Songs without Words

Keyboard Arrangements of Vocal Music in England, 1560-1760 S A N DR A M ANGSE N During the two hundred years stretching from William Byrd to George Frideric Handel, English publishers released thousands of keyboard arrangements of arias, songs, and other vocal pieces. Sandra Mangsen here uncovers a body of material that is remarkably varied (ranging from the simple to the virtuosic), musically inventive, and indicative of major trends in musical and social life at the time. This book will be of great interest to scholars, performers, and anyone who loves the music of the late Renaissance, Baroque, and early Classic eras.

In the seventeenth century, like today, the guitar was often used for chord strumming (“battuto” in Italian) in songs and popular dance genres, such as the ciaccona or sarabanda. In the golden age of the baroque guitar, Italy gave rise to a unique solo repertoire, in which chord strumming and lute-like plucked (“pizzicato”) styles were mixed. This book explores this little-known repertoire, providing a historical background and examining particular performance issues. The book is accompanied by audio examples on a companion website. LEX EISENHARDT is one of Europe’s foremost experts on early guitar. $90.00/£60.00(s) December 2015 978 1 58046 533 5 10 b/w illus.; 266pp, 9 x 6, HB Eastman Studies in Music

The Lives of George Frideric Handel DAV ID HUN TER This book seeks to distinguish fact from fiction, not only to produce a new biography but also to explore the concepts of biography and dissemination by using Handel’s life and lives as a case study. By examining the images of Handel created by his biographers and other reporters and by adding new factual information, David Hunter shows how events have been manipulated into stories and tropes. Picking apart biographies and music histories, he exposes their narrative underpinnings – the lies, confusions, presumptions, and conclusions, whether direct and inferred or assumed – to show how Handel’s many ‘lives’ have moulded our understanding of the musician, the man and the icon. The polymath monk Hermannus Contractus (1013-54) wrote on a wide range of subjects, including history, astronomy, and time-keeping devices. His music theory, which is concerned largely with the organization of pitch in Gregorian chant, forms a nexus between Germanic speciesbased thought and then-new ideas from Italian music theory. Hermann also ties his theory to practice through citations of plainsong and recommended exercises. This revised edition of Leonard Ellinwood’s 1952 text and translation offers a new introduction, a critical edition of the Latin text with an annotated English translation on facing pages, appendices, and detailed indexes.

Ernest Newman

A Critical Biography PAUL WAT T Ernest Newman (1868– 1959) left an indelible mark on British musical criticism in a career spanning more than seventy years. Tracing Newman’s career as a writer and examining particular sets of writings such as composer-biographies and essays from leading newspapers, this book illustrates the ways in which Newman’s work was grounded in late-nineteenth-century intellectual paradigms that made him a unique and at times controversial figure. $90.00/£45.00(s) June 2017 978 1 78327 190 0 10 b/w illus.; 256pp, 23.4 x 15.6, HB Music in Britain, 1600-2000

Delius and Norway

The Dvořák Compendium JA N SMAC Z NY Authored by an internationally acknowledged authority on Dvořák and Czech music of the nineteenth century, the Compendium will serve as a comprehensible and useful reference work for specialist and non-specialist readers alike. The biographical section is informed by the now complete edition of Dvořák’s correspondence and documents (Supraphon/Bärenreiter: 19872004) and by numerous recent discoveries. The remainder of the Compendium also comprises a comprehensive list of works (based on Burghauser’s Thematic Catalogue of 1996 with extensive revisions), including publication details and dates of first performances; a bibliography; and as its main part an A to Z dictionary. The latter comprises detailed, up-to-date entries on all aspects of Dvořák’s life and works, including important information on cultural context such as his relationship to the artistic centres of Vienna, Berlin and London. $90.00/£50.00(s) May 2017 978 9 11000 138 1 10 b/w illus.; 272pp, 23.4 x 15.6, HB

A NDREW J. B OYLE Norway was a primary source of inspiration for Delius: 20 summers of his adult life were spent there, and almost 40 works express his experiences of Norwegian nature or were composed to Norwegian texts. Yet, although his attachment to Norway was at the core of his creative life, this book is the first in-depth study of the influence the country and its artists had on the composer. The Delius that emerges from these pages is little known, even to most enthusiasts of his music: a driven and energetic personality and an artist searching for a language with which to express the existential crisis facing modern man in the early twentieth century. ANDREW J. BOYLE is an author and musician. He

gained his PhD on the music of Frederick Delius from the University of Sheffield. $80.00/£45.00(s) August 2017 978 1 78327 199 3 25 b/w illus.; 336pp, 23.4 x 15.6, HB

Bedrich Smetana

Myth, Music, and Propaganda K E L LY ST. PI E RRE The legacy of Bedrich Smetana became so enmeshed in state ideology under Czechoslovakia’s communist regime that little has been written about the composer since the fall of that regime. This book reopens inquiry into Smetana by exploring the earliest scholarship on the composer to reveal how it generated political myths about him and his works. It also examines the ways in which these myths were adapted in twentieth-century scholarship to suit the ideologies of the communist administration. Smetana remains a dynamic figure whose mythology has been rewritten time and time again to suit shifting political perspectives. KELLY ST. George Smart and NineteenthCentury London Concert Life JOHN C A R N EL L EY Smart earned his living primarily as a conductor, but he was also significant as an organist, composer and recorder of events. He established successful and pioneering London concert series, was a prime mover in the setting up of the Philharmonic Society and the Royal Academy of Music, and taught many of the leading singers of the day, being well versed in the Handelian concert tradition. He also conducted the opera at the Covent Garden Theatre and introduced significant new works to the public. His journeys to Europe, and his contacts with the leading European musical figures of the day (including Weber, Meyerbeer, Spohr, and Mendelssohn), were crucial to the direction music was to take in nineteenth-century Britain. Musical Life and Culture in Paris in the First World War R AC H E L MO ORE This book looks at musical life in Paris between 1914 and 1918. It examines how Western art music became a central part of the home-front war effort, employed by both musicians and government as a powerful tool of propaganda. Composer-performer Julius Eastman was an enigma, both comfortable and uncomfortable in the many worlds he inhabited. His music resists labels and seethes with a tension that resonates with musicians, scholars, and audiences today. British Royal and State Funerals

Music and Ceremonial since Elizabeth I M AT T H IAS R ANGE Covering funerals of both royalty and nonroyalty, including Nelson, Wellington and Churchill, this study begins with the funeral of Elizabeth I in 1603 and goes up to the funerals of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in 2002 and the ceremonial funeral of Baroness Thatcher in 2013. It examines the liturgical changes in the Anglican funeral rite since the Reformation and the change from the so-called ‘public’ to ‘private’ funerals and includes many new findings on the development of the ceremonial as well as new insights into the music and its performance. Drawing on substantial research in principal libraries and archives, this book is an exhaustive resource for musicologists, musicians and historians alike, providing an unprecedented insight into this most sombre of royal and state occasions. Bedford’s Musical Society A History of Bedford Choral Society M IC HAE L BE N SON Introduction by D ONAL D BUR ROWS The Bedford (Amateur) Musical Society, now Bedford Choral Society, was formed in 1867. Its beginnings were not auspicious - an article in a local newspaper reported that ‘no one felt very sanguine about the success of the proposed Society ... the idea being that musical people were a quarrelsome lot and could not hold together for any length of time.’ Despite this, the Society has had a long and almost continuous history and is still thriving today. This volume records the characters who have shaped the Society through the years, the varied musical programmes and the links with wellknown performers and musicians. It includes the BBC Music Department’s move to Bedford early in the Second World War and its support for the Society as it re-established itself. MICHAEL BENSON was educated at St Michael’s College, Tenbury Wells and later attended Hereford Cathedral School and Theological College. Edited by ER IC S AYLOR & C H R ISTOPH ER M. S C H EER

Edited by VIC K I P. ST ROE H E R & J U ST I N VIC K E RS

By exploring the sea’s significance within the complex world of British music, this book reveals a network of largely unexamined cultural tropes unique to this island nation. The essays are organised around three main themes: the Sea as Landscape, the Sea as Profession, and the Sea as Metaphor, covering an array of topics drawn from the seventeenth century to the twenty-first. Featuring studies of pieces by the likes of Purcell, Arne, Sullivan, Vaughan Williams, and Davies, as well as examinations of cultural touchstones such as the BBC, the Scottish fishing industry and the Aldeburgh Festival, this book will be of interest to musicologists as well as scholars in history, British studies, cultural studies, and English. Felix Aprahamian

Diaries and Selected Writings on Music Edited by L EW I S FORE M AN & SUS A N FORE M AN The music critic Felix Aprahamian (1914-2005) was a remarkable self-made man whose enormous influence in musical circles was deeply founded in his practical experience of promoting music in London, notably British and French composers. Being friends with leading French composers and musicians of the day, Aprahamian made his name as music critic on the Sunday Times, where from 1948 to 1989 he was required reading. The collection assembled here from his diaries, articles, reviews and broadcasts sheds new light on his life and work and evokes the almost vanished world of a music criticism both humane and strict, paying tribute to music’s spontaneous and absolute qualities. Once picked up this volume is difficult to put down. THE DE LIUS S O CI ET Y JOU R NAL

Benjamin Britten Studies brings together established authorities and new voices to offer a fresh perspective on previous scholarship models and a re-contextualization of previously held beliefs about Britten. Using the most recent and innovative historical, musicological, sociological, psychological, and theoretical methodologies, the authors take off the ‘protective arm’ around Britten and disclose an unprecedented amount of previously unpublished and disregarded primary source materials. The collection considers difficult questions of identity such as Britten’s retreat to America; addresses sensitive issues of intimacy and Britten’s relationships; and combines closer analysis of Britten’s music and compositional practices with a description of the more overtly political context within which he found himself. Benjamin Britten Studies ends by asking what we can actually know about the composer in a reconsideration of the materials he left behind. VICKI P. Creating Der Rosenkavalier From Chevalier to Cavalier

M IC HAE L REY NOL D S A full account of the making, during 1909-10, of Der Rosenkavalier with emphasis on its derivation from a French operette of 1907, L’Ingenu libertin. Reynolds casts a major new light on Strauss’s most popular operatic success, highlighting in particular how it was that Hofmannsthal – who had not until then had any theatrical success as an original playwright – was advised and empowered by Kessler to produce a work that succeeded onstage from its very first performance and went rapidly on to conquer the stages of the world. $85.00/£50.00(s) June 2016 978 1 78327 049 1 15 colour & 63 b/w illus.; 263pp, 23.4 x 15.6, HB

Building the Operatic Museum Eighteenth-Century Opera in Fin-de-Siècle Paris W I L L IAM GI BB ON S Focusing on the operas of Mozart, Gluck, and Rameau, this book examines the role that eighteenth-century works played in the opera houses of Paris around the turn of the twentieth century. These works became central exhibits in what William Gibbons calls the Operatic Museum – a simultaneously physical and conceptual space in which great masterworks from the past could entertain audiences while educating them in their own history and national identity. Building the Operatic Museum explores how this seemingly simple idea represented a fundamental shift in how French audiences, critics, and composers understood the nature and function of music history. What makes the book particularly worthwhile is its careful contextualization of the major fin-de siècle revivals of eighteenth-century operas including abundant selections from critical discourse. . . . One of the merits of Gibbons’ book is the way it enables us to see how these dilemmas [of historical fidelity vs. practical viability, and of Germanic traditions vs. French national pride] were understood, and hotly debated, throughout the period in question, paving the way for a conception of the repertoire that is still very much with us. The book’s most engrossing section is probably the one devoted to Mozart, for the [Austrian] composer’s place within the French operatic pantheon would always entail the most complex negotiations. The Violin Edited by ROBE RT RIGGS With a colourful history that spans 450 years, the violin has proven to be one of the world’s most important and versatile instruments. Addressed to performing musicians, serious concertgoers, and collectors of recordings, The Violin offers insightful, up-to-date essays on a wide range of topics. Essays discuss beloved masterpieces from the violin’s solo repertoire, with individual chapters on the Italian Baroque, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and the violin concerto in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as well as the evolution of performance styles and interpretation as documented in recordings. The volume also illustrates the broad cultural and geographic reach of the instrument, offering readers a taste of the traditional music of Argentina, Mexico, Norway, and India, in which the violin’s participation is an essential and characteristic element. Other chapters are devoted to American fiddling and to the violin and violinists as metaphors in literature and the visual arts. Musicologist and violinist ROBERT RIGGS (Ph.D., Harvard University) chairs the Department of Music at the University of Mississippi and is the author of articles on Mozart as well as the monograph Leon Kirchner: Composer, Performer, and Teacher (URP 2010). Music in Vienna 1700, 1800, 1900

DAVI D W Y N JON E S Vienna has long been associated with many of the most significant composers in Western music – from Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, through the Strauss family, Brahms, Bruckner and Wolf, to Mahler, Lehár, Schoenberg and Webern. Today, venerable institutions like the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Staatsoper and the Vienna Boys’ Choir, together with the shared pride of residents and visitors in its musical inheritance, ensure that the image of a musical city is undimmed. This volume focusses on the political and social role of music in the city. Patronage, social function and audience are key considerations, set within wider political and cultural developments; and the volume is populated by emperors, princes, performers, publishers and writers as well as composers. Performative Analysis

A Theory of Music Analysis

JEFFR EY S W IN KIN

D OR A A. HAN N I N E N

Reimagining Music Theory for Performance This book proposes a new model for understanding the musical work, which includes interpretation – both analysis- and performance-based – as an integral component. Jeffrey Swinkin explores the important role that performance plays in the understanding of a work, as well as the performative nature of musical analysis itself (especially Schenkerian analysis), which he views as a mode of interpretation. The first three chapters theorize this stance, the last three apply it to works by Chopin, Beethoven, and Schumann. JEFFREY SWINKIN is assistant professor of music theory at University of Oklahoma and has published on musical topics as diverse as variation form, Beethoven, the philosophy of music, and pedagogy. $95.00/£60.00(s) March 2016 978 1 58046 526 7 3 b/w illus.; 280pp, 9 x 6, HB Eastman Studies in Music

On Segmentation and Associative Organization

This book introduces a theory of music analysis – a language and conceptual framework – that analysts can use to delve into aspects of segmentation and associative organization in a wide range of repertoire from the Baroque to the present. Includes close analyses of works by Beethoven, Debussy, Nancarrow, Riley, Feldman, and Morris. The tremendous range of application shows without a doubt that this book achieves its goal of opening new lines of inquiry for individual pieces, repertoires, and issues in contemporary music theory. Formal Functions in Perspective Essays on Musical Form from Haydn to Adorno

Edited by STEV EN VAN DE MO ORTEL E, JULIE PEDN EAULTDESL AUR IER S & NATHAN JOHN MA RTIN Among the more striking developments in contemporary North American music theory is the centrality that questions of musical form (Formenlehre) have enjoyed in recent decades. The essays in this volume, run the chronological gamut from Haydn and Clementi to Leibowitz and Adorno. Running through all of these essays and connecting them thematically is the central notion of formal function. STEVEN VANDE MOORTELE is assistant professor of music at the University of Toronto. Music into Fiction

Composers Writing, Compositions Imitated T H E OD ORE Z IOL KOWSK I This book deals with three aspects that have been neglected in the burgeoning field of music and literature. First, it considers figures from German Romanticism to the present who saw themselves as writers before they turned to composition (Schumann), or sought careers in music before becoming writers (Hoffmann, Burgess), then the few operatic composers (e.g. Wagner, Schoenberg), who wrote their own libretti. Second, the book turns to literary works based on musical compositions. It concludes with a unique case: modern composers’ efforts to render musically the compositions described in detail by Thomas Mann in his novel Doktor Faustus. Performing Gender, Place, and Emotion in Music

Global Perspectives Edited by FIONA M AGOWAN & LOU I SE W R AZ E N While ethnomusicologists and anthropologists have long recognized the theoretical connections between gender, place, and emotion in musical performance, these concepts are seldom analyzed together. Performing Gender, Place, and Emotion in Music is the first book-length study to examine the nexus between these three concepts from a crosscultural perspective. Contributors consider ways in which locally produced musics emerge from and interact with particular structures of feeling while recognizing that the emotional terrains of musical performance are complex local, national, and global domains in which gender, identity, and meaning are produced and contested. Drawing on race theory, aesthetics, cultural studies, musicology, and postcolonial studies, the author examines two converging strains of Western thought that had developed the idea that music and language (especially writing) were located differentially, and allowed a definition of blackness to emerge that incorporated the idea of music as a Black art form. The author’s research focuses on how this naturalization of Black musicality occurred and the impact of these theories on a selection of 20th and 21st century black and white writers and filmmakers; how such writers and filmmakers perpetuated these characterizations, and how these ways of thinking about race and music subsequently impacted African and African Diaspora authors wishing to practice within the medium of writing, from which he argues they have been “systematically expelled into music”.

American Popular Music in Britain’s Raj BR A DLEY G . SHOPE From the early years of the British Raj in India, the colonial establishment pursued musical activities that emulated the homeland. American Popular Music in Britain’s Raj identifies musical intersections between the United States, England, and India, arguing that the popularity of American music in India often depended on its popularity in Britain, especially London, and that these three nations together constituted an anglophone entertainment network supported by global commercial and military enterprises.
